Russian General Staff chief Nikolai Makarov today denied that Russia had sent warships to the Mediterranean Sea in defense of Syria, claiming instead that the dispatch of a Russian Navy task force was part of a routine exercise.

Syrian sources claimed that Russian warships entered Syrian territorial waters last week as a deterrent to any NATO-led assault.
Reports that Russia had sent warships into Syrian territorial waters were followed by the revelation that the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush was repositioned off the coast of Syria having moved from its usual theater of operations in the Straits of Hormuz.As we highlighted yesterday, the same Al-Qaeda terrorists who aided NATO in overthrowing Colonel Gaddafi are now being airlifted into Syria to carry out attacks against President Assad’s forces following secret meetings between the Libyan National Transitional Council and Syrian rebels.Reports circulating today suggest that 600 Libyan rebels are already fighting in Syria, even as the establishment media still characterizes opposition forces as protesters and civilians.The fighters have joined the Free Syria Army, the militant group carrying out attacks on government forces in Syria, reports the Egyptian news website Al-Ray Al-Arabi citing its sources. Negative-seeming events may be the fulfillment of a prophecy that is a harbinger of redemption. Read on for a possible scenario in keeping with current and recent events and Biblical prophecy.Dr. Yacov Tabak
Executive Summary: A careful comparison of current events vis-à-vis the Palestinians and the so-called Peace Process with a variety of Jewish sources concerning events that are destined to take place at the Final Redemption, leads to surprising and positive possibilities. The following article describes a possible scenario and the Jewish sources on which it is based.Maimonides (Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Melachim 12) teaches that the Jewish Oral Tradition does not clarify the details of future events described by the Prophets of Israel in the Bible. In his words,וכל אלו הדברים וכיוצא בהן לא ידע אדם איך יהיו עד שיהיו – and in all these things and related matters man will not know how they will come about until they come about. In other words, no one knows exactly what the Prophets are describing until it takes place.The Jewish Oral Tradition (תורה שבעל פה Torah she-Beal Peh) gives us abundant guidance on matters of Halakha – for instance, the פרי עץ הדר – the fruit of the beauteous tree to be taken on Sukkot - is defined by the Oral Tradition as the אתרוג etrog – the citron. Or, the Biblical injunction to וקשרתם לאות על ידך והיו לטטפת בין עיניך bind them as a sign on your arms and frontlets between your eyes we understand from the Torah she-Beal Peh refers to phylacteries – Tefillin – which are cubic black leather boxes containing parchments inscribed with very specific Biblical passages. Without the Oral Tradition, we would have no way of knowing this.
A comparable guide to understanding prophetic statements, however, is not revealed by the Oral Tradition. For instance, Isaiah 60:08, in reference to the returning of the Exiles to Israel in the Final Redemption, states: מי אלה כעב תעופינה וכיונים אל ארבתיהם – who are these who will fly like a cloud, and like doves to their dovecotes? Before the era of piloted manned flight began in the early twentieth century, classical commentators were simply unable to understand this passage. Today, when virtually all modern-era immigrants have reached Israel by flying at the altitude of clouds, and, like doves, always landing in the same place – the Ben Gurion Airport, we understand clearly the prediction of Isaiah concerning this phenomenon of airborne ingathering of Exiles.Another example is Isaiah 26:20 לך עמי בא בחדריך וסגור דלתך בעדך חבי כמעט רגע עד יעבר זעם - Go My people come into your rooms and close your doors behind you, hide for just a moment until the fury passes. The Biblical commentator Radak comments that this will occur during the War of Gog Umagog and the reference to rooms is allegorical and refers to taking shelter so to speak, by doing good deeds and doing penance. Rashi states that the Jews will go to their synagogues and study halls at that time.As we now know, this passage is a very accurate description of the seclusion in the sealed rooms used as a protection in Israel against chemical warfare agents in the first Gulf War in 1991 and the fury passing occurred when the All Clear sounded (the code words were Sharav Kaved) allowing people to exit the sealed rooms after the Scud missile landed and was determined to be chemically non-threatening.As Maimonides had said, when the prophecy comes to pass, we are able to understand the passage, and so it was.The People of Israel have been experiencing events described as those of אחרית הימים Acharit Hayamim – the Last of the Years [not, as often mistranslated, The End of Days] referred to by the Torah and the prophets, when there is to be a massive ingathering of Jews to the Land of Israel, an extensive rebuilding of the country and its communities, and a Golden Age when כי מציון תצא תורה ודבר השם מירושלים - for from Zion shall issue forth Torah (Teaching = knowledge, including technological and scientific advances) and the Word of G-d from Jerusalem Isaiah 2:3 and Michah 4:2.
It is tempting to explore prophetic and Midrashic sources to look for the context of unfolding events. This study leads to encouragement as to their salutary outcome, despite the difficulties and challenges we face at present.Rav Saadyah Gaon related to this over one thousand years ago in his ten-part seminal philosophical work הנבחר באמונות ודעות Hanivchar Be'emunot Ve'deot Selected Matters of Faith and Doctrines of Dogma. In number 8 – בישועה BaYeshuah – Concerning the Final Salvation he states (according to the translation from the Arabic by Rav Yosef Kapach, page 247) ישתבח מי שהטיב לנו בהקדימו להודיע לנו את הצרות האלה שלא יבואו עלינו פתאום ויגרמו לנו ייאוש - praised be He who benefited us in that He gave us advance notice concerning these troubles so that they would not happen to us suddenly and cause us despair.To paraphrase this idea, there is a reason the prophets provide so much detail in their accounts of future events in the Messianic Age. After all, to convey basic Jewish Faith in the Redemption concept it would be enough for the Prophets to write trust in the Ultimate Redemption – it will surely come.The reason for the detailed scenarios described in Biblical prophecy is so that when these events begin to take place, we will be able to recognize the patterns and context of ominous developments, and know that the final outcome is positive.The message of Rav Saadyah is that the detail has been provided in order that the Jewish people will not despair. This foreknowledge of the outcome provided by the prophets will preclude mass despair on the part of the Jewish public when the scenario of upcoming events of the Messianic era seems threatening and foreboding.An example of this principle at work was provided over five years ago on the occasion of the destruction of Gush Katif. At that time, the prospect of Israel destroying many rebuilt Jewish communities was considered by some to be an indication of a reversal of the אתחלתא דגאולה atchalta de'Geula first stages of the Redemption which the State of Israel embodied up to that point.
However, the Targum Yonatan ben Uziel on Deuteronomy 34:3 states: וית גלוות תלמידי אלישע דגלו מן קרוות דקליא על ידי אחוהון בית ישראל מאתן אלפין גוברין . . . וסדרי קרבא דגוג ובעידן צערא רבא ההיא מיכאל יקום בדרעא לפרוקא – in translation And the exile of the students of Elisha [the Prophet] who are exiled from the Town of Dekalim by their brethren of the House of Israel – 200,000 men - . . . and the battle orders of Gog [and Magog] and in that era of great pain, Michael [the Archangel Michael – the guardian angel of the Jewish people] will arise with the [outstretched] Arm [of the Almighty] in order to redeem.This source tells us that the evacuation of Gush Katif and its principle town Neveh Dekalim, exiling the Jewish residents, could be seen as an integral part of the upcoming scenario of Ultimate Redemption. Were it not for this source, we might have despaired of the future.Taking it into consideration, although we do not yet understand the logic and we share the pain of the exiled pioneers, and although those who perpetrated the act chose of their own free will to cause immeasurable suffering, we can be heartened that it is part of the overall redemption scenario so that we do not despair.[See /Articles/Article.aspx/5497 for a detailed discussion of this source.]
In Israel, we find ourselves in foreboding circumstances today, in Spring 2011. The State of Israel seems to have lost a major measure of its support in the non-Jewish world and is being stampeded into abandoning large parts of the Land of Israel to the tender mercies of sworn enemies who have no peaceful intentions at all – the Palestinians.These are Arabs who constitute a national entity invented recently of whole cloth and which never existed in world history. Their wish is to destroy the State of Israel and kill as many Jews as possible in the process. Prime Minister Netanyahu is being pushed into formulating a plan of further concessions, beyond those already granted, lest the World (i.e. the Quartet - the USA, Russia, the UN, and the EU) force on Israel a peace agreement which would involve the abandonment of the homes of over 600,000 Israelis – including large parts of Jerusalem.The Palestinian enemy fully expects this scenario to materialize and so, steadfastly refuses to negotiate. Since the World, lead by US President Barack Hussein Obama whose father was a practicing Moslem, does not punish them in any way for not negotiating, they feel vindicated in this assessment.Let us consult Jewish sources to see if there are hints as to upcoming events. First we will review a possible scenario constructed from the Palestinian declared intentions and from prophetic sources that correlate with them. Then we will quote these sources in detail so as to back up the scenario. The result is much more encouraging than currently considered.
A Possible Scenario:
After extensive preparation of the apparatus of statehood and widespread recognition by a growing list of countries of an independent state of Palestine with borders defined by the 1967 cease-fire lines, the Palestinians turn in September 2011 [see Note 1 below] to the UN Security Council to be recognized as an independent State within the pre-1967 armistice lines– meaning that the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood of Jerusalem, as well as many others, will be part of Security-Council-recognized Palestine.The USA does not veto this resolution (the recent US veto of the anti-settlement Security Council resolution was a feint, and not a precedent) and it passes [see Note 2]; alternatively, if there is a veto, the Palestinians turn to the UN General Assembly, using the 1950's Uniting for Peace tactic which enabled the USA to engage in the Korean War although a Russian-Chinese veto had paralyzed the Security Council on this issue and receive their approval.The Palestinians then turn to the State of Israel and request immediate evacuation of its nearly 650,000 citizens from their state. Israel offers to discuss the matter, the Palestinians refuse any discussion [see Note 3] and refer the issue back to the Security Council, requesting that they act to remove these interlopers post haste from their state. After a short time, the Security Council and/or Quartet decide that the festering wound of the Israel-Palestine conflict has persisted long enough and decide to settle the matter once and for all by sending an expeditionary force to Israel to carry out the evacuation forcibly [see Note 4].The deadline for Israel acting is by January 15, 2012 [see Note 5]. On or about that date, if Israel does not begin to seriously evacuate its citizens (and it won't), an expeditionary force consisting of contingents from both Christian and Moslem countries [see Note 6] lands on the shores of Israel. The force consists of at least 185,000 combat soldiers [see Note 7], and is well-armed enough to counter the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) in whatever conflict configuration that might develop.
It has been demonstrated on the Internet that there is an elaborate US Armed Forces base in Israel, located near Shoham, and straddling the Green Line, and the force may be quartered there. This base was given to Pres. George W. Bush by Prime Minister Sharon on the occasion of the second Iraq War about five years ago. For a detailed description of this extra-territorial US presence in Israel, see http://www.rense.com/general66/excl.htm , including many pictures.Eight months after the initial invasion [see note 8], the force approaches Jerusalem on the Eve of Sukkot 5773 (October 2012) [see Note 8]. They cause substantial havoc, but one week later, on the night between Oct. 06 and Oct. 07, 2012 - in the Hebrew calendar ליל הושענא רבה Leil Hoshanna Rabbah – the eve of the seventh day of Sukkot - , the L-rd, G-d of Israel says Enough! and puts an end to this force by some as yet unidentified natural phenomenon, devastating all the home countries who contributed personnel to the invasion [see Note 8]. Furthermore, on this occasion, all the capitals of the historic enemies of the Jews (for example Berlin, Teheran, Cairo, Rome, London, Madrid, Mecca, Moscow) will be reduced to rubble in a natural disaster that engulfs the entire planet [see Notes 9 and 11].On the morning of Hoshanna Rabbah, the world looks entirely different. The final end to political or military pressure exerted on Jews and their State of Israel arrives. At the close of this scenario, the Israel-Palestinian conflict ends forever. The Jews present in the Holy Land emerge unscathed and those surviving the devastation overseas soon make a final Aliyah [see Note 10].
The Sources:
Those readers familiar with Jewish sources describing the War of Gog and Magog will recognize elements thereof in the above scenario. Let us now elaborate in detail the sources for the above account, point-by-point.
1. August-September, 2011 Security Council approval of a Palestinian State in the 1967 lines:
This is the proclaimed intention of the Palestinian leadership, as declared repeatedly by their Prime Minister Salam Fayyad over the last 1 1/2 years. It is also the date by which the Quartet has determined that a final settlement of the Israel-Palestinian conflict be completed.
2. American non-use of the Veto at the Security Council : For the first time in history, America has a President – Barack Obama – with a sympathetic orientation to Moslem countries. He visited Cairo early in his presidency but has not yet visited Israel, and actions speak louder than words. The Palestinians’ moves would logically be made such that the entire planned process of forcing Israel militarily to do their bidding is completed before November 2012 when Obama stands for re-election.
3. The Palestinians demand evacuation of their country by the Jewish non-citizens and refuse to negotiate: This is simply a logical conclusion based on their behavior and statements to date – force Israel to vacate all territory beyond the post-1967 lines without resorting to negotiation and without conceding anything at all. They have announced clearly that their state must be judenrein.
4. The Quartet decides to force Israeli evacuation militarily: The entire tenor of the anti-Israeli international political atmosphere for the last two years leads directly to this outcome. It is this prospect that has Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak running scared and feeling pressured to make proposals to advance the peace process, even though the current logjam in negotiations is entirely the fault of the Palestinians. Note the Arab League's announced plan to ask to make Gaza a no-fly zone and Obama advisor Samantha Power's suggestion to send UN forces to protect the Palestinians from the IDF.
5. The Jan.15, 2012 date: The first Gulf War in 1991 was fixed to begin on this date. Events in the solar calendar have particular significance for the non-Jewish world and those in the lunar calendar are significant for the Jewish world. (see BT Tractate Succa 29a – a solar eclipse is a bad omen for the non-Jews and a lunar eclipse is a bad omen for the Jews).
In 2012, the interval between Jan. 15 and Oct. 07, Hoshanna Rabbah – the seventh day of Sukkot, is exactly 266 days – 38 weeks, i.e. the nine months of a human pregnancy. According to BT Yoma 10a, Ben-David (the Messiah) will only arrive after the evil kingdom of Rome dominates the entire world for a period of nine months as it says in Micah 5:2 therefore give them the time it takes for her to give birth. The events at the closing stages of the Redemption process will last the nine months of human gestation.Since it is understood that the finale of G-d's victory over the nations at the close of the Gog and Magog War takes place on the seventh day of Sukkot – Hoshanna Rabbah, it is logical to seek the year when this interval is 266 days. 2012 is such a year.In Zechariah 14, it states that in response to the nations' invasion of Eretz Yisrael, ויצא השם ונלחם בגוים ההם כיום הלחמו ביום קרב - And Hashem will go forth and do battle with those nations as on the day of His fighting on the day of Battle.The Targum Yonatan renders this: כיום אגחותיה קרב על ימא דסוף - As on the day that he fought the battle at the Red Sea, referring to the night of the seventh day of Passover, when the Egyptian pursuers were drowned in the Red Sea.
Since G-d's victory over the Egyptians in the Exodus culminated in the crossing of the Red Sea and the final destruction of the Egyptian enemy on the seventh day of Passover, so in the Final Redemption on the Seventh Day of Sukkot all the nations who were/are enemies of the Jews will be destroyed. As it states in Michah 7:15 כימי צאתך מארץ מצרים אראנו נפלאות kimei tzeitcha mei-eretz Mitzrayim ar'enu niflaot – I will show you miraculous events (at the Final Redemption) as in the days of the Exodus.The connection with the Sukkot holiday is clearly indicated in Zechariah 14 and is the reason the chapters related to the War of Gog and Magog were chosen to be read as Haphtorot on Sukkot.This connection is Torah-mandated. The 70 bulls sacrificed on Sukkot in the Holy Temple on behalf of the welfare of the 70-nations of the world are sacrificed not 10 per day for 7 days, but in a curious countdown from 13 on the first day to 7 on the last day. The total is 70, but the declining numbers are an ominous message to the nations that in the ultimate events to take place on Sukkot, they will not fare well (unless there is massive Teshuva – repentance - on their part; see Rashi on Numbers 29:18).
6. Christian and Moslem Contingents in the Invading Expeditionary Force: See Daniel 11:40 and following: 40 – ובעת קץ יתנגח עמו מלך הנגב וישתער עליו מלך הצפון ברכב ובפרשים ובאניות רבות ובא בארצות ושטף ועבר - And at the time of the End [a synonym in Biblical terminology for Acharit Hayamim] there will be a collision with him by the King of the South and the King of the North will storm [his defences] with chariots and horsemen and many ocean-going vessels and he will sweep through and pass on. – ויטע אהלי אפדנו בין ימים להר צבי קודש ובא עד קצו ואין עוזר לו - And he will pitch his Royal tents between the seas and the mount of the Sacred Beauty [a synonym for the land of Israel] and he will come to his End, and there is no one to help him. 12:1 – ובעת ההיא יעמוד מיכאל השר הגדול העמד על בני עמך והיתה עת צרה אשר לא נהיתה מהיות גוי עד העת ההיא ובעת ההיא ימלט עמך כל הנמצא כתוב בספר - And at that time, the Great Archangel Michael [the traditional Guardian Angel of the Jews], who guards over Your people, will arise and there will be a time of troubles such as never before since becoming a nation until then, and at that time, Your people will escape – all those found to be written in the book.The above passages describe a seminal war between the King of the South and the King of the North, who then unite to invade Israel, where they will meet their end. Over one hundred years ago, the classic commentary Malbim identified the King of the South as artzot Yishmael the Ishmaelite countries, a clear reference to Moslem forces; the Metzudot David, another commentary, identifies the King of the North as Romi, Rome, a reference to the Christian countries.From these sources, it derives that the invasion of Israel at the end of the scenario involves a coalition of both Moslem and Christian forces. This invasion and its consequences – the War of Gog-u-Magog – are described in detail in Ezekiel 38 and 39. There, Persia is mentioned as part of the invading coalition, so that now Iran may be part of the expeditionary force as well. The intent of the invading force is (38:12) לשלול שלל ולבוז בז להשיב ידך על חרבות
נושבות ואל עם מאסף מגוים עשה מקנה וקנין יושבי על טבור הארץ -To take as booty the booty [the booty already taken--in the Six Day War?], and to despoil the spoils, to return your [violent] hand on resettled ruins and against a people ingathered from the Nations, dealing in commercial trade, and dwelling in the heartland.
This description closely suits the intent to uproot communities rebuilt in Israel [referred to as the settlements in the current diplomatic jargon], the intent of the Expeditionary Force. Finally, in 39:06 – ושלחתי אש במגוג וביושבי האיים לבטח וידעו כי אני השם - I will send fire in Magog [the home countries of Gog and his coalition] and in the dwellers of the Islands [a biblical term for overseas territories – other continents] in security and then they will know that I am the L-rd.This is a clear reference to world-wide destruction and catastrophe. In Zechariah 13:8, a reference to two-thirds will be cut off and perish and one-third will be left over [from the destruction]is interpreted as referring to the vast toll of this world-wide catastrophe (see BT Sanhedrin 111a – debate between R' Yohanan and Resh Lakish).
7. 185,000 Soldiers: The B.T. Sanhedrin 95b describes that the future armies of Gog Umagog will encompass 185,000 troops as did the besieging army of Sancheriv (Sennacherib) who laid unsuccessful siege to Jerusalem during the reign of King Hezekiah. The force is itemized there as 45,000 senior officers (with their camp-following consorts), 80,000 soldiers equipped with scale-equipped body-armor, and 60,000 swordsmen, in addition to various horsemen.This analogy derives from the similarities between this account and the scenario foretold by the prophets for the Gog Umagog conflict. An expeditionary force coming against Israel has to be capable theoretically of defeating the IDF in battle, although a battle may not occur.
8. The attack on Jerusalem on Sukkot: See Zecharia 14 - the entire chapter – for the details of this invasion. The association with Sukkot is made at the end of the chapter where in the aftermath of G-d's victory over the nations, their survivors are commanded to visit Jerusalem annually on Sukkot in remembrance of this event.
This chapter is read in synagogues as the Haphtorah on the first day of Sukkot. And Chapters 38-39 of Ezekiel, mentioned above, are read on the Intermediate Sabbath of Sukkot as the Haphtorah. The two readings are associated with Sukkot because the events described there are destined to take place on Sukkot (see Rav Hai Gaon in Tur Shulhan Arukh – Orach Chaim – 490).
9.The Planet-wide Disaster on Hoshanna Rabbah: See the detailed scenario in Ezekiel 38-39 and Zecharia 14. Earthquakes, tidal waves, avnei elgavish (which I have identified as a major fall of earth-crossing asteroids on the planet that night of Hoshanna Rabbah); each of these has enough energy and destructive power to leave a crater or devastation where a city stood previously).
10. The Jews in Israel survive: In Joel 4:16: והשם מציון ישאג ומירושלים יתן קולו ורעשו שמים וארץ והשם מחסה לעמו ומעוז לבני ישראל - In the context of this war, and G-d will roar forth from Zion, and He will raise His voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth will tremble [the Biblical verb for an earthquake] and G-d will be a shelter for His people and a fortress for the children of Israel.Furthermore, by analogy with the Exodus as defined above, the concept of הפלאה hafla'ah – contradistinction – was a dominant theme in the Exodus. Plague after plague smote the Egyptians but the Israelites were unaffected. See the account of the plague of dever – cattle blight – in Exodus 9:7 where Pharaoh cannot believe that the Israelites lost no cattle to this plague and sent a personal emissary to the land of Goshen to confirm this amazing contradistinction.So may we hope that it will be in the Final Redemption, and although there will be massive perishing all over the planet, the Jews in Israel will survive unharmed, decisively demonstrating G-d's intervention on their behalf. This will serve to convince the surviving non-Jews of the globe Who orchestrated this world-wide catastrophe – and why.
Finally, in Deuteronomy 32:25, the song of Ha'azinu, it states מחוץ תשכל חרב ומחדרים אימה - michutz teshakel cherev umechadarim eimah literally – outside there will be loss of life by sword, and indoors there will be great fear. The Targum Yonatan on this passage: עמא דגלו מברא לארעא דישראל תתכיל יתהון מחת חרבא ודמשתיירין בארעא דישראל בגו קיטוני מדמיכיהון איגרי בהון הגרת מותא - The people exiled outside the boundaries of the Land of Israel will suffer the blow of the sword and those remaining in the Land of Israel in their bedrooms where they sleep will fear the fear of death.This strongly suggests that the safest place for the Jews to be during that Sukkot will be in Israel – they will fear, but will remain alive.
11. Destruction of the Past and Current Enemies of the Jews at that time: This theme recurs in the Bible and the words of the prophets repeatedly. One quote will illustrate the point: Deuteronomy 32:43 – again from the Song of Ha'azinu: הרנינו גוים עמו כי דם עבדיו יקום ונקם ישיב לצריו וכפר אדמתו עמו - Nations, praise His people, for He has avenged the blood of His servants, and He will visit vengeance on His adversaries and will atone for His land and for His people.
In Conclusion:
As quoted above, Maimonides warns that no one knows for sure to what events specific prophecies refer until they come to pass. However, we live in times so replete with prophecies in the midst of fulfillment that we may be forgiven for constructing possible scenarios.The above is one such scenario, congruent with Jewish sources. There may be others with different outcomes. If there is an armed invasion of Israel by a joint Christian-Moslem force intending to eject Jews from the historic Land of Israel, and this takes place in early 2012, there will be those who will ominously predict the imminent demise of the independent State of Israel, as there are even those who do so today.However, as described above, the outcome may be dramatically more favorable for the Jews. There will be no room for despair, but rather for intense optimism, and that precisely is the message of Rav Saadyah Gaon above in explaining why we have been provided by Divine guidance with all this information.

Negative-seeming events may be the fulfillment of a prophecy that is a harbinger of redemption. Read on for a possible scenario in keeping with current and recent events and Biblical prophecy.Dr. Yacov Tabak
Executive Summary: A careful comparison of current events vis-à-vis the Palestinians and the so-called Peace Process with a variety of Jewish sources concerning events that are destined to take place at the Final Redemption, leads to surprising and positive possibilities. The following article describes a possible scenario and the Jewish sources on which it is based.Maimonides (Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Melachim 12) teaches that the Jewish Oral Tradition does not clarify the details of future events described by the Prophets of Israel in the Bible. In his words,וכל אלו הדברים וכיוצא בהן לא ידע אדם איך יהיו עד שיהיו – and in all these things and related matters man will not know how they will come about until they come about. In other words, no one knows exactly what the Prophets are describing until it takes place.The Jewish Oral Tradition (תורה שבעל פה Torah she-Beal Peh) gives us abundant guidance on matters of Halakha – for instance, the פרי עץ הדר – the fruit of the beauteous tree to be taken on Sukkot - is defined by the Oral Tradition as the אתרוג etrog – the citron. Or, the Biblical injunction to וקשרתם לאות על ידך והיו לטטפת בין עיניך bind them as a sign on your arms and frontlets between your eyes we understand from the Torah she-Beal Peh refers to phylacteries – Tefillin – which are cubic black leather boxes containing parchments inscribed with very specific Biblical passages. Without the Oral Tradition, we would have no way of knowing this.
A comparable guide to understanding prophetic statements, however, is not revealed by the Oral Tradition. For instance, Isaiah 60:08, in reference to the returning of the Exiles to Israel in the Final Redemption, states: מי אלה כעב תעופינה וכיונים אל ארבתיהם – who are these who will fly like a cloud, and like doves to their dovecotes? Before the era of piloted manned flight began in the early twentieth century, classical commentators were simply unable to understand this passage. Today, when virtually all modern-era immigrants have reached Israel by flying at the altitude of clouds, and, like doves, always landing in the same place – the Ben Gurion Airport, we understand clearly the prediction of Isaiah concerning this phenomenon of airborne ingathering of Exiles.Another example is Isaiah 26:20 לך עמי בא בחדריך וסגור דלתך בעדך חבי כמעט רגע עד יעבר זעם - Go My people come into your rooms and close your doors behind you, hide for just a moment until the fury passes. The Biblical commentator Radak comments that this will occur during the War of Gog Umagog and the reference to rooms is allegorical and refers to taking shelter so to speak, by doing good deeds and doing penance. Rashi states that the Jews will go to their synagogues and study halls at that time.As we now know, this passage is a very accurate description of the seclusion in the sealed rooms used as a protection in Israel against chemical warfare agents in the first Gulf War in 1991 and the fury passing occurred when the All Clear sounded (the code words were Sharav Kaved) allowing people to exit the sealed rooms after the Scud missile landed and was determined to be chemically non-threatening.As Maimonides had said, when the prophecy comes to pass, we are able to understand the passage, and so it was.The People of Israel have been experiencing events described as those of אחרית הימים Acharit Hayamim – the Last of the Years [not, as often mistranslated, The End of Days] referred to by the Torah and the prophets, when there is to be a massive ingathering of Jews to the Land of Israel, an extensive rebuilding of the country and its communities, and a Golden Age when כי מציון תצא תורה ודבר השם מירושלים - for from Zion shall issue forth Torah (Teaching = knowledge, including technological and scientific advances) and the Word of G-d from Jerusalem Isaiah 2:3 and Michah 4:2.
It is tempting to explore prophetic and Midrashic sources to look for the context of unfolding events. This study leads to encouragement as to their salutary outcome, despite the difficulties and challenges we face at present.Rav Saadyah Gaon related to this over one thousand years ago in his ten-part seminal philosophical work הנבחר באמונות ודעות Hanivchar Be'emunot Ve'deot Selected Matters of Faith and Doctrines of Dogma. In number 8 – בישועה BaYeshuah – Concerning the Final Salvation he states (according to the translation from the Arabic by Rav Yosef Kapach, page 247) ישתבח מי שהטיב לנו בהקדימו להודיע לנו את הצרות האלה שלא יבואו עלינו פתאום ויגרמו לנו ייאוש - praised be He who benefited us in that He gave us advance notice concerning these troubles so that they would not happen to us suddenly and cause us despair.To paraphrase this idea, there is a reason the prophets provide so much detail in their accounts of future events in the Messianic Age. After all, to convey basic Jewish Faith in the Redemption concept it would be enough for the Prophets to write trust in the Ultimate Redemption – it will surely come.The reason for the detailed scenarios described in Biblical prophecy is so that when these events begin to take place, we will be able to recognize the patterns and context of ominous developments, and know that the final outcome is positive.The message of Rav Saadyah is that the detail has been provided in order that the Jewish people will not despair. This foreknowledge of the outcome provided by the prophets will preclude mass despair on the part of the Jewish public when the scenario of upcoming events of the Messianic era seems threatening and foreboding.An example of this principle at work was provided over five years ago on the occasion of the destruction of Gush Katif. At that time, the prospect of Israel destroying many rebuilt Jewish communities was considered by some to be an indication of a reversal of the אתחלתא דגאולה atchalta de'Geula first stages of the Redemption which the State of Israel embodied up to that point.

Prime Minister Netanyahu is being pushed into formulating a plan of further concessions, beyond those already granted, lest the World (i.e. the Quartet - the USA, Russia, the UN, and the EU) force on Israel a peace agreement which would involve the abandonment of the homes of over 600,000 Israelis – including large parts of Jerusalem.The Palestinian enemy fully expects this scenario to materialize and so, steadfastly refuses to negotiate. Since the World, lead by US President Barack Hussein Obama whose father was a practicing Moslem, does not punish them in any way for not negotiating, they feel vindicated in this assessment.Let us consult Jewish sources to see if there are hints as to upcoming events. First we will review a possible scenario constructed from the Palestinian declared intentions and from prophetic sources that correlate with them. Then we will quote these sources in detail so as to back up the scenario. The result is much more encouraging than currently considered.
A Possible Scenario:
After extensive preparation of the apparatus of statehood and widespread recognition by a growing list of countries of an independent state of Palestine with borders defined by the 1967 cease-fire lines, the Palestinians turn in September 2011 [see Note 1 below] to the UN Security Council to be recognized as an independent State within the pre-1967 armistice lines– meaning that the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood of Jerusalem, as well as many others, will be part of Security-Council-recognized Palestine.The USA does not veto this resolution (the recent US veto of the anti-settlement Security Council resolution was a feint, and not a precedent) and it passes [see Note 2]; alternatively, if there is a veto, the Palestinians turn to the UN General Assembly, using the 1950's Uniting for Peace tactic which enabled the USA to engage in the Korean War although a Russian-Chinese veto had paralyzed the Security Council on this issue and receive their approval.The Palestinians then turn to the State of Israel and request immediate evacuation of its nearly 650,000 citizens from their state. Israel offers to discuss the matter, the Palestinians refuse any discussion [see Note 3] and refer the issue back to the Security Council, requesting that they act to remove these interlopers post haste from their state. After a short time, the Security Council and/or Quartet decide that the festering wound of the Israel-Palestine conflict has persisted long enough and decide to settle the matter once and for all by sending an expeditionary force to Israel to carry out the evacuation forcibly [see Note 4].The deadline for Israel acting is by January 15, 2012 [see Note 5]. On or about that date, if Israel does not begin to seriously evacuate its citizens (and it won't), an expeditionary force consisting of contingents from both Christian and Moslem countries [see Note 6] lands on the shores of Israel. The force consists of at least 185,000 combat soldiers [see Note 7], and is well-armed enough to counter the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) in whatever conflict configuration that might develop.
It has been demonstrated on the Internet that there is an elaborate US Armed Forces base in Israel, located near Shoham, and straddling the Green Line, and the force may be quartered there. This base was given to Pres. George W. Bush by Prime Minister Sharon on the occasion of the second Iraq War about five years ago. For a detailed description of this extra-territorial US presence in Israel, see http://www.rense.com/general66/excl.htm , including many pictures.Eight months after the initial invasion [see note 8], the force approaches Jerusalem on the Eve of Sukkot 5773 (October 2012) [see Note 8]. They cause substantial havoc, but one week later, on the night between Oct. 06 and Oct. 07, 2012 - in the Hebrew calendar ליל הושענא רבה Leil Hoshanna Rabbah – the eve of the seventh day of Sukkot - , the L-rd, G-d of Israel says Enough! and puts an end to this force by some as yet unidentified natural phenomenon, devastating all the home countries who contributed personnel to the invasion [see Note 8]. Furthermore, on this occasion, all the capitals of the historic enemies of the Jews (for example Berlin, Teheran, Cairo, Rome, London, Madrid, Mecca, Moscow) will be reduced to rubble in a natural disaster that engulfs the entire planet [see Notes 9 and 11].On the morning of Hoshanna Rabbah, the world looks entirely different. The final end to political or military pressure exerted on Jews and their State of Israel arrives. At the close of this scenario, the Israel-Palestinian conflict ends forever. The Jews present in the Holy Land emerge unscathed and those surviving the devastation overseas soon make a final Aliyah [see Note 10].
The Sources:
Those readers familiar with Jewish sources describing the War of Gog and Magog will recognize elements thereof in the above scenario. Let us now elaborate in detail the sources for the above account, point-by-point.
1. August-September, 2011 Security Council approval of a Palestinian State in the 1967 lines:
This is the proclaimed intention of the Palestinian leadership, as declared repeatedly by their Prime Minister Salam Fayyad over the last 1 1/2 years. It is also the date by which the Quartet has determined that a final settlement of the Israel-Palestinian conflict be completed.
2. American non-use of the Veto at the Security Council : For the first time in history, America has a President – Barack Obama – with a sympathetic orientation to Moslem countries. He visited Cairo early in his presidency but has not yet visited Israel, and actions speak louder than words. The Palestinians’ moves would logically be made such that the entire planned process of forcing Israel militarily to do their bidding is completed before November 2012 when Obama stands for re-election.
3. The Palestinians demand evacuation of their country by the Jewish non-citizens and refuse to negotiate: This is simply a logical conclusion based on their behavior and statements to date – force Israel to vacate all territory beyond the post-1967 lines without resorting to negotiation and without conceding anything at all. They have announced clearly that their state must be judenrein.
4. The Quartet decides to force Israeli evacuation militarily: The entire tenor of the anti-Israeli international political atmosphere for the last two years leads directly to this outcome. It is this prospect that has Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak running scared and feeling pressured to make proposals to advance the peace process, even though the current logjam in negotiations is entirely the fault of the Palestinians. Note the Arab League's announced plan to ask to make Gaza a no-fly zone and Obama advisor Samantha Power's suggestion to send UN forces to protect the Palestinians from the IDF.
5. The Jan.15, 2012 date: The first Gulf War in 1991 was fixed to begin on this date. Events in the solar calendar have particular significance for the non-Jewish world and those in the lunar calendar are significant for the Jewish world. (see BT Tractate Succa 29a – a solar eclipse is a bad omen for the non-Jews and a lunar eclipse is a bad omen for the Jews).
In 2012, the interval between Jan. 15 and Oct. 07, Hoshanna Rabbah – the seventh day of Sukkot, is exactly 266 days – 38 weeks, i.e. the nine months of a human pregnancy. According to BT Yoma 10a, Ben-David (the Messiah) will only arrive after the evil kingdom of Rome dominates the entire world for a period of nine months as it says in Micah 5:2 therefore give them the time it takes for her to give birth. The events at the closing stages of the Redemption process will last the nine months of human gestation.Since it is understood that the finale of G-d's victory over the nations at the close of the Gog and Magog War takes place on the seventh day of Sukkot – Hoshanna Rabbah, it is logical to seek the year when this interval is 266 days. 2012 is such a year.In Zechariah 14, it states that in response to the nations' invasion of Eretz Yisrael, ויצא השם ונלחם בגוים ההם כיום הלחמו ביום קרב - And Hashem will go forth and do battle with those nations as on the day of His fighting on the day of Battle.The Targum Yonatan renders this: כיום אגחותיה קרב על ימא דסוף - As on the day that he fought the battle at the Red Sea, referring to the night of the seventh day of Passover, when the Egyptian pursuers were drowned in the Red Sea.
Since G-d's victory over the Egyptians in the Exodus culminated in the crossing of the Red Sea and the final destruction of the Egyptian enemy on the seventh day of Passover, so in the Final Redemption on the Seventh Day of Sukkot all the nations who were/are enemies of the Jews will be destroyed. As it states in Michah 7:15 כימי צאתך מארץ מצרים אראנו נפלאות kimei tzeitcha mei-eretz Mitzrayim ar'enu niflaot – I will show you miraculous events (at the Final Redemption) as in the days of the Exodus.The connection with the Sukkot holiday is clearly indicated in Zechariah 14 and is the reason the chapters related to the War of Gog and Magog were chosen to be read as Haphtorot on Sukkot.This connection is Torah-mandated. The 70 bulls sacrificed on Sukkot in the Holy Temple on behalf of the welfare of the 70-nations of the world are sacrificed not 10 per day for 7 days, but in a curious countdown from 13 on the first day to 7 on the last day. The total is 70, but the declining numbers are an ominous message to the nations that in the ultimate events to take place on Sukkot, they will not fare well (unless there is massive Teshuva – repentance - on their part; see Rashi on Numbers 29:18).
6. Christian and Moslem Contingents in the Invading Expeditionary Force: See Daniel 11:40 and following: 40 – ובעת קץ יתנגח עמו מלך הנגב וישתער עליו מלך הצפון ברכב ובפרשים ובאניות רבות ובא בארצות ושטף ועבר - And at the time of the End [a synonym in Biblical terminology for Acharit Hayamim] there will be a collision with him by the King of the South and the King of the North will storm [his defences] with chariots and horsemen and many ocean-going vessels and he will sweep through and pass on. – ויטע אהלי אפדנו בין ימים להר צבי קודש ובא עד קצו ואין עוזר לו - And he will pitch his Royal tents between the seas and the mount of the Sacred Beauty [a synonym for the land of Israel] and he will come to his End, and there is no one to help him. 12:1 – ובעת ההיא יעמוד מיכאל השר הגדול העמד על בני עמך והיתה עת צרה אשר לא נהיתה מהיות גוי עד העת ההיא ובעת ההיא ימלט עמך כל הנמצא כתוב בספר - And at that time, the Great Archangel Michael [the traditional Guardian Angel of the Jews], who guards over Your people, will arise and there will be a time of troubles such as never before since becoming a nation until then, and at that time, Your people will escape – all those found to be written in the book.The above passages describe a seminal war between the King of the South and the King of the North, who then unite to invade Israel, where they will meet their end. Over one hundred years ago, the classic commentary Malbim identified the King of the South as artzot Yishmael the Ishmaelite countries, a clear reference to Moslem forces; the Metzudot David, another commentary, identifies the King of the North as Romi, Rome, a reference to the Christian countries.From these sources, it derives that the invasion of Israel at the end of the scenario involves a coalition of both Moslem and Christian forces. This invasion and its consequences – the War of Gog-u-Magog – are described in detail in Ezekiel 38 and 39. There, Persia is mentioned as part of the invading coalition, so that now Iran may be part of the expeditionary force as well. The intent of the invading force is (38:12) לשלול שלל ולבוז בז להשיב ידך על חרבות
נושבות ואל עם מאסף מגוים עשה מקנה וקנין יושבי על טבור הארץ -To take as booty the booty [the booty already taken--in the Six Day War?], and to despoil the spoils, to return your [violent] hand on resettled ruins and against a people ingathered from the Nations, dealing in commercial trade, and dwelling in the heartland.
This description closely suits the intent to uproot communities rebuilt in Israel [referred to as the settlements in the current diplomatic jargon], the intent of the Expeditionary Force. Finally, in 39:06 – ושלחתי אש במגוג וביושבי האיים לבטח וידעו כי אני השם - I will send fire in Magog [the home countries of Gog and his coalition] and in the dwellers of the Islands [a biblical term for overseas territories – other continents] in security and then they will know that I am the L-rd.This is a clear reference to world-wide destruction and catastrophe. In Zechariah 13:8, a reference to two-thirds will be cut off and perish and one-third will be left over [from the destruction]is interpreted as referring to the vast toll of this world-wide catastrophe (see BT Sanhedrin 111a – debate between R' Yohanan and Resh Lakish).
7. 185,000 Soldiers: The B.T. Sanhedrin 95b describes that the future armies of Gog Umagog will encompass 185,000 troops as did the besieging army of Sancheriv (Sennacherib) who laid unsuccessful siege to Jerusalem during the reign of King Hezekiah. The force is itemized there as 45,000 senior officers (with their camp-following consorts), 80,000 soldiers equipped with scale-equipped body-armor, and 60,000 swordsmen, in addition to various horsemen.This analogy derives from the similarities between this account and the scenario foretold by the prophets for the Gog Umagog conflict. An expeditionary force coming against Israel has to be capable theoretically of defeating the IDF in battle, although a battle may not occur.
8. The attack on Jerusalem on Sukkot: See Zecharia 14 - the entire chapter – for the details of this invasion. The association with Sukkot is made at the end of the chapter where in the aftermath of G-d's victory over the nations, their survivors are commanded to visit Jerusalem annually on Sukkot in remembrance of this event.
This chapter is read in synagogues as the Haphtorah on the first day of Sukkot. And Chapters 38-39 of Ezekiel, mentioned above, are read on the Intermediate Sabbath of Sukkot as the Haphtorah. The two readings are associated with Sukkot because the events described there are destined to take place on Sukkot (see Rav Hai Gaon in Tur Shulhan Arukh – Orach Chaim – 490).
9.The Planet-wide Disaster on Hoshanna Rabbah: See the detailed scenario in Ezekiel 38-39 and Zecharia 14. Earthquakes, tidal waves, avnei elgavish (which I have identified as a major fall of earth-crossing asteroids on the planet that night of Hoshanna Rabbah); each of these has enough energy and destructive power to leave a crater or devastation where a city stood previously).
10. The Jews in Israel survive: In Joel 4:16: והשם מציון ישאג ומירושלים יתן קולו ורעשו שמים וארץ והשם מחסה לעמו ומעוז לבני ישראל - In the context of this war, and G-d will roar forth from Zion, and He will raise His voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth will tremble [the Biblical verb for an earthquake] and G-d will be a shelter for His people and a fortress for the children of Israel.Furthermore, by analogy with the Exodus as defined above, the concept of הפלאה hafla'ah – contradistinction – was a dominant theme in the Exodus. Plague after plague smote the Egyptians but the Israelites were unaffected. See the account of the plague of dever – cattle blight – in Exodus 9:7 where Pharaoh cannot believe that the Israelites lost no cattle to this plague and sent a personal emissary to the land of Goshen to confirm this amazing contradistinction.So may we hope that it will be in the Final Redemption, and although there will be massive perishing all over the planet, the Jews in Israel will survive unharmed, decisively demonstrating G-d's intervention on their behalf. This will serve to convince the surviving non-Jews of the globe Who orchestrated this world-wide catastrophe – and why.
Finally, in Deuteronomy 32:25, the song of Ha'azinu, it states מחוץ תשכל חרב ומחדרים אימה - michutz teshakel cherev umechadarim eimah literally – outside there will be loss of life by sword, and indoors there will be great fear. The Targum Yonatan on this passage: עמא דגלו מברא לארעא דישראל תתכיל יתהון מחת חרבא ודמשתיירין בארעא דישראל בגו קיטוני מדמיכיהון איגרי בהון הגרת מותא - The people exiled outside the boundaries of the Land of Israel will suffer the blow of the sword and those remaining in the Land of Israel in their bedrooms where they sleep will fear the fear of death.This strongly suggests that the safest place for the Jews to be during that Sukkot will be in Israel – they will fear, but will remain alive.
11. Destruction of the Past and Current Enemies of the Jews at that time: This theme recurs in the Bible and the words of the prophets repeatedly. One quote will illustrate the point: Deuteronomy 32:43 – again from the Song of Ha'azinu: הרנינו גוים עמו כי דם עבדיו יקום ונקם ישיב לצריו וכפר אדמתו עמו - Nations, praise His people, for He has avenged the blood of His servants, and He will visit vengeance on His adversaries and will atone for His land and for His people.
In Conclusion:
As quoted above, Maimonides warns that no one knows for sure to what events specific prophecies refer until they come to pass. However, we live in times so replete with prophecies in the midst of fulfillment that we may be forgiven for constructing possible scenarios.The above is one such scenario, congruent with Jewish sources. There may be others with different outcomes. If there is an armed invasion of Israel by a joint Christian-Moslem force intending to eject Jews from the historic Land of Israel, and this takes place in early 2012, there will be those who will ominously predict the imminent demise of the independent State of Israel, as there are even those who do so today.However, as described above, the outcome may be dramatically more favorable for the Jews. There will be no room for despair, but rather for intense optimism, and that precisely is the message of Rav Saadyah Gaon above in explaining why we have been provided by Divine guidance with all this information.

Nowruz, this ancient festival, has been celebrated for thousands of years by my people; it ushers in the spring, welcomes renewal of life, and expresses optimism for the year ahead to bless us with good health, abundant food, family, and friends in the land of a civilized and free people.
I have always believed one cannot possibly be a Persian and hold to the lofty tenets of the ancient Iranian Zoroastrian triad of good thoughts, good words, good deeds, and remain a Muslim. In the same fashion, one cannot cherish American values, the Bill of Rights and the United States Constitution and be a true Muslim. They are comprehensively incompatible with Sharia Law.cyrus_the_great_cylinderIranian Muslims are victims of the Islamic virus that has destroyed in them their traditional respect for diversity. It is the Iranian ancient fundamental belief in the validity and value of diversity that is enshrined in the Cyrus the Great Cylinder, the unconditional respect for the complete rights of all the people of the world (an anathema to the Islamists’ credo) that has held the nation together over the millennia. Although Islam was imposed on Iran some 1,400 years ago, Iranians deeply value their own ancient non-Arab identity and have never fully surrendered to the Arab culture.Currently, a large number of Iranians are completely fed up with Islam and they want to leave this dogma of hate and violence. In fact, many already have, but they simply aren’t able to come forward and announce it, for obvious reasons.
Such duplicity exists within the Iranian culture. Originally, Iranians were forced to accept Islam to save their lives from Arab invaders, but deep within the heart of every single Iranian alive today, exists a burning resentment of the Arab-Islamic invasion of their homeland and culture. It is ironic that many Iranians may actually confess to being Muslims; yet, an overwhelming number of Iranians have never read the Quran or understand its language. The events in history have toughened present day Iranians. They have become great pretenders. But the totality of 1400 years of Islamic barbarity and savagery must end. We no longer need to pretend that we are practicing Muslims; when in fact, we are not.Realistically speaking, there is perhaps 10-15 percent of the population that continues to support the clerical system in varying degrees. Many in this group are government employees, Mullahs, and hired thugs such as the Basiji. Also, the regime has some backers among the poor, the less educated, and the deeply religious. Yet, the alienation from the regime and Islam spans the entire spectrum of the Iranian society with the intelligentsia and the university students leading the determined opposition to end Islamic rule.
Masses of Iranians are irreparably alienated from a corrupt and oppressive Islamic rule. The rule of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is crumbling. The previously solid edifice, or at least the appurtenance of it, is finally showing many cracks that continue to grow. There are just too many fault lines to list here.My fellow secularist Iranians and I have indeed done, and continue to do, what we can to help our compatriots in Iran, who are on the front line fighting Islam and the Islamic Regime.

The 2009 protests were just as much against the Islamic Republic as they were about Shi’a Islam. In fact, much of it was against Islam itself. People have experienced what a primitive and defective system of belief Islam is and aim to abandon it for good. Many will still hang on to it to some extent for some time. Yet, a great many would simply leave Islam and even actively oppose it.There are still those who foolishly claim that Muhammad was a messenger from God and the Quran is a divinely revealed book. My suggestion is that they use their intellect and read the Quran fully for themselves without the assumption that the book is the literal word of God and that Muhammad was their messenger. Without this assumption as their starting point, they will find better than 90% of the book is about violence, threats of hell, exclusion of people, and the like. What kind of God would dictate things like what you find in the Quran? It took Muhammad 20 years to reveal this hodge-podge book that reads more like expressions of a delusional individual with multiple personality disorder.I bemoan the plight of my native land and the people who have suffered and continue to suffer under Islam. Without Islam there wouldn’t be any Muslims to hoist the banner of hate and violence against non-Muslims. A few claim that Islam has done some good in the past. Well, that’s debatable. There are those who are equally convinced that Islam has inflicted a great deal of suffering on others from its inception to the present. What we all must agree on is that Islam and its sharia laws, at the very least, do not fit in today’s world.
Islam is a creed of an ignorant people in a primitive and barbaric age. It is fixated in time and place; it harbors the ambition of taking the 21st century world back 14 centuries and ruling it by its dogma of violence, intolerance, injustice and death. Yet, Islam is not only an obsolete vestige of a defunct era, but itself is an infinitely fractured belief that can hardly put its own home in order. The numerous Islamic sects are at each other’s throats; sub-sects and schools despise one another as much as they hate non-Muslims. Hatred, not love, drives Islam.I am not against Muslims. I condemn Islam with all its derivatives and those who support and promote it. Muslims are patients and Islam is a disease. You want to help the patients to rid themselves of the affliction. You want to eradicate a horrifically communicable disease. Although many prefer to tackle the militant version of Islam Islamism, for all intents and purposes, there is no sharp demarcation between, Islamists, Jihadists and Islamism. One and all are progeny of Islam itself. Any differences among the three are of degree and not kind. When one addresses Islamism and jihadism, their source is also addressed.Regrettably, Islam cannot be reformed. Keep in mind that Islam claims it is the perfect eternal faith for mankind. Splits have occurred and will continue to occur in Islam. Yet, reformation has not happened in nearly 1400 years and is not going to happen. Islam is carved in granite, just the way it is. No change. Allah’s book is sealed.
In the monumental task of dealing with Islam and its variations, every individual, group and government must combine their resources and energies to prevail. We must urge all people to resist Islam’s encroachment and not be deceived by its sanitized version presented in non-Islamic lands. The destiny of civilized life hangs in the balance. Shirking of this responsibility would be an unpardonable act of every enlightened human being and organization that values human liberty and dignity.

It was a creed imposed on an enlightened, tolerant and free people at the point of the sword by savages hailing from the Arabian Peninsula during the seventh century with promises of booty and women in this world and glorious eternal sensual rewards in the promised paradise of Allah in the next. With each passing day, I rejoice more and more in my good fortune; in my ability to avoid the yoke of Islamic slavery and its blinders that imprisons a billion and half people by walls of superstition, hatred of others, and a celebration of death.Things Islamic not only did not resonate with me, they often clashed head on with what I valued and loved. What appealed to me and even enchanted me were more often than not, taboo in Islam or anathema to the creed. I loved life, beauty in all its forms, poetry, ancient Iranian culture and traditions. I loved laughter, celebrations of joy such as birthdays; our yearly festivities of Nowruz, my favorite, lasts for thirteen days. Nowruz, this ancient festival, has been celebrated for thousands of years by my people; it ushers in the spring, welcomes renewal of life, and expresses optimism for the year ahead to bless us with good health, abundant food, family, and friends in the land of a civilized and free people.
I have always believed one cannot possibly be a Persian and hold to the lofty tenets of the ancient Iranian Zoroastrian triad of good thoughts, good words, good deeds, and remain a Muslim. In the same fashion, one cannot cherish American values, the Bill of Rights and the United States Constitution and be a true Muslim. They are comprehensively incompatible with Sharia Law.cyrus_the_great_cylinderIranian Muslims are victims of the Islamic virus that has destroyed in them their traditional respect for diversity. It is the Iranian ancient fundamental belief in the validity and value of diversity that is enshrined in the Cyrus the Great Cylinder, the unconditional respect for the complete rights of all the people of the world (an anathema to the Islamists’ credo) that has held the nation together over the millennia. Although Islam was imposed on Iran some 1,400 years ago, Iranians deeply value their own ancient non-Arab identity and have never fully surrendered to the Arab culture.Currently, a large number of Iranians are completely fed up with Islam and they want to leave this dogma of hate and violence. In fact, many already have, but they simply aren’t able to come forward and announce it, for obvious reasons.
Such duplicity exists within the Iranian culture. Originally, Iranians were forced to accept Islam to save their lives from Arab invaders, but deep within the heart of every single Iranian alive today, exists a burning resentment of the Arab-Islamic invasion of their homeland and culture. It is ironic that many Iranians may actually confess to being Muslims; yet, an overwhelming number of Iranians have never read the Quran or understand its language. The events in history have toughened present day Iranians. They have become great pretenders. But the totality of 1400 years of Islamic barbarity and savagery must end. We no longer need to pretend that we are practicing Muslims; when in fact, we are not.Realistically speaking, there is perhaps 10-15 percent of the population that continues to support the clerical system in varying degrees. Many in this group are government employees, Mullahs, and hired thugs such as the Basiji. Also, the regime has some backers among the poor, the less educated, and the deeply religious. Yet, the alienation from the regime and Islam spans the entire spectrum of the Iranian society with the intelligentsia and the university students leading the determined opposition to end Islamic rule.
Masses of Iranians are irreparably alienated from a corrupt and oppressive Islamic rule. The rule of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is crumbling. The previously solid edifice, or at least the appurtenance of it, is finally showing many cracks that continue to grow. There are just too many fault lines to list here.My fellow secularist Iranians and I have indeed done, and continue to do, what we can to help our compatriots in Iran, who are on the front line fighting Islam and the Islamic Regime.

The 2009 protests were just as much against the Islamic Republic as they were about Shi’a Islam. In fact, much of it was against Islam itself. People have experienced what a primitive and defective system of belief Islam is and aim to abandon it for good. Many will still hang on to it to some extent for some time. Yet, a great many would simply leave Islam and even actively oppose it.There are still those who foolishly claim that Muhammad was a messenger from God and the Quran is a divinely revealed book. My suggestion is that they use their intellect and read the Quran fully for themselves without the assumption that the book is the literal word of God and that Muhammad was their messenger. Without this assumption as their starting point, they will find better than 90% of the book is about violence, threats of hell, exclusion of people, and the like. What kind of God would dictate things like what you find in the Quran? It took Muhammad 20 years to reveal this hodge-podge book that reads more like expressions of a delusional individual with multiple personality disorder.I bemoan the plight of my native land and the people who have suffered and continue to suffer under Islam. Without Islam there wouldn’t be any Muslims to hoist the banner of hate and violence against non-Muslims. A few claim that Islam has done some good in the past. Well, that’s debatable. There are those who are equally convinced that Islam has inflicted a great deal of suffering on others from its inception to the present. What we all must agree on is that Islam and its sharia laws, at the very least, do not fit in today’s world.
Islam is a creed of an ignorant people in a primitive and barbaric age. It is fixated in time and place; it harbors the ambition of taking the 21st century world back 14 centuries and ruling it by its dogma of violence, intolerance, injustice and death. Yet, Islam is not only an obsolete vestige of a defunct era, but itself is an infinitely fractured belief that can hardly put its own home in order. The numerous Islamic sects are at each other’s throats; sub-sects and schools despise one another as much as they hate non-Muslims. Hatred, not love, drives Islam.I am not against Muslims. I condemn Islam with all its derivatives and those who support and promote it. Muslims are patients and Islam is a disease. You want to help the patients to rid themselves of the affliction. You want to eradicate a horrifically communicable disease. Although many prefer to tackle the militant version of Islam Islamism, for all intents and purposes, there is no sharp demarcation between, Islamists, Jihadists and Islamism. One and all are progeny of Islam itself. Any differences among the three are of degree and not kind. When one addresses Islamism and jihadism, their source is also addressed.Regrettably, Islam cannot be reformed. Keep in mind that Islam claims it is the perfect eternal faith for mankind. Splits have occurred and will continue to occur in Islam. Yet, reformation has not happened in nearly 1400 years and is not going to happen. Islam is carved in granite, just the way it is. No change. Allah’s book is sealed.
In the monumental task of dealing with Islam and its variations, every individual, group and government must combine their resources and energies to prevail. We must urge all people to resist Islam’s encroachment and not be deceived by its sanitized version presented in non-Islamic lands. The destiny of civilized life hangs in the balance. Shirking of this responsibility would be an unpardonable act of every enlightened human being and organization that values human liberty and dignity.

Spain’s Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez presented a new policy for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on Saturday, declaring Israel as the homeland of the Jews for the first time and saying that the issue of Palestinian refugees should be solved in such a way that it does not compromise Israel’s current demographic makeup of a Jewish majority.Jimenez’s speech before the United Nations General Assembly is particularly dramatic in light of the fact that Spain is considered the leading EU country to support Palestinian rights. Adopting such a pro-Israel stance may lead to other countries to follow suit.

The foreign minister stressed Spain’s commitment to Israel as the embodiment of the project to create a homeland for the Jewish people. She recounted how since Israel’s inception, it has suffered through many wars and terrorism against its people, adding that Israel’s security is a top priority for Spain.Jimenez called for the establishment of a Palestinian state along 1967 lines, with agreed swaps and Jerusalem as a shared capital with Israel.The security of Israel and Palestine will require effective guarantees in the future peace agreement, including a possible international participation, should the parties request it,the Spanish foreign minister said. She made clear that the best way to achieve such a deal would be through a negotiated peace treaty.The Spanish foreign minister also addressed the painful drama of the Palestinian refugees, presenting a new policy on this issue as well. She said that the refugee problem should be justly agreed upon by both Israel and the Palestinians, while still preserving Israel’s character as a Jewish state.
Jimenez said that Spain supports the General Assembly granting Palestine the status of a non member observer state, explaining that the international community must show that it is committed to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

The University of San Francisco is a Jesuit college. One thing of interest is how the Catholic Pope during World War II did nothing to help the Jews during the Holocaust. In following tradition, USF’s campus President and Reverend Stephen Privett is no better. Alerted that one of his faculty, the virulently anti-Israel and anti-US Stephen Zunes arranged for a recruiting session to boycott the Jews on the Bay Area campus sponsored by Global Exchange, a non-profit group that gave $600,000 in aid to al Qaeda while our marines were fighting in Fallujah and provides aid to Hamas, Pruitt followed the example of the World War II Pope: He did nothing to stop it. In fact, he stonewalled any communication with the Jewish community.
Lying by omission: University of San Francisco’s Middle East Studies Department hosts Dalit Baum’s lecture to recruit more BDS activists and financially ruin the Israeli economy By Lee Kaplan, investigator, analyst
On November 9th, 2011, the University of San Francisco’s Middle East Studies Department and International Studies Professor Stephen Zunes, the school’s Muslim Students Association (MSA), as well as the Bay Area non-profit Global Exchange all sponsored little more than an indoctrination session against the Jewish state of Israel and Jewish businesses. The event promoted the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement against Israel while trying to pass itself off as an academic event. Professor Zunes has a long history of antipathy against Israel as a US ally.
The guest speaker for that evening was Dalit Baum , who runs the website Who Profits? and is an Israeli leftist who in the past has called for the dismantling of the Jewish state and who boasted she has already cost the Israeli economy in excess of 1.5 billion dollars in promoting BDS against Israeli firms worldwide. Baum bills herself as a feminist scholar and was introduced as such by Zunes, even though she holds only a degree in math and has never published any academic work regarding feminism. Baum made clear during the evening she was at USF to present to the students “information” and “tools” they could use to boycott and divest from the Jewish state. Zunes remarked at Baum’s courage speaking at USF because of Israel’s new law allowing lawsuits by companies affected by BDS against activists like Baum.
As a form of perversion, the BDS Movement gets touted on college campuses by the likes of Zunes and Baum as some form of fighting oppression and human rights abuses when it is actually an extension of the Arab League Boycott against Israel that was created in 1950. Boycotting was the first political action step taken by the Nazi Party in 1933 that led to the Final Solution. It is a form of economic warfare to force Israel’s government to capitulate to Arab demands. Zunes and Baum also tried to conflate their boycott efforts by fallaciously comparing Israel today with the 1980’s apartheid South Africa in order to instill in those attending the idea that they were fighting oppression.Global Exchange, Baum’s main sponsor, is the fundraising arm for Medea Benjamin’s Code Pink, an NGO that routinely provides monetary and physical aid to the terrorist group Hamas whose charter calls for not only the killing and dispossession all of Israel’s Jews, but the complete annihilation of all world Jewry, so already the event was off to a shaky start. Code Pink/Global Exchange also sent $600,000 in aid to the Iraqi Resistance while US marines were fighting in Fallujah.A photograph of Medea Benjamin was flashed on the screen demonstrating against Israel overseas, but few in the audience would have seen the connection or recognized her and Zunes mentioned the organization as if it were a purveyor of brotherly love. Dalit Baum also condemned the US presence in Iraq and Afghanistan suggesting it was mainly for profits and like the dispute between Israel and the Palestinian Authority a form of neo-colonialism.In order to put some distance between the event and itself after some Jewish groups expressed alarm the event would be held on the Jesuit campus, the administration required the head of the Muslim Students Association read a disclaimer that stated, The presence of a guest speaker on the campus of the University of San Francisco does not necessarily imply approval or endorsement by the University of the views expressed by the guest speaker or by anyone present at the event. A communiqué also went out assuring critics that a question and answer session would follow to allow for differing points of view. 2 x 4 cards were passed out with instructions to write questions down that would be addressed later that evening.
After the disclaimer was read, Professor Stephen Zunes immediately stood before the room and stated he felt obliged to declaim the disclaimer.I’ve been teaching here for 15 years, he said, and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard it explicitly said. Why it had to be said is an indication it’s a challenge to raise human rights issues when you are dealing with a strategic ally of the United States [Israel]. Zunes reminisced about his own activism in boycotting South Africa and tried to conflate what when on there in the 1980’s with what Israel is dealing with in the Palestinian Authority. While he mentioned whites discriminated against blacks in South Africa, he avoided mentioning that Arabs who are Israeli citizens enjoy full civil rights the same as Jews and even have affirmative action programs in Israeli universities, own businesses and serve as judges, policemen and even in parliament . There is much to be said, he continued, about boycotts, divestment and sanctions as a way to raise a challenge to the Israeli occupation.However, he made no mention that the Palestinian Authority does practice genuine apartheid against Jews (not to mention terrorism) and even has a law on the books that metes out a death penalty for selling land to a Jew, even retroactively, and a constitution modeled after those of Iran and Saudi Arabia that do discriminate against religious minorities.Zunes then introduced Baum as an outstanding scholar and human rights activist.Baum began her lecture by first asking the audience how many of them had heard of the BDS movement or participated in it. She remarked that few in the audience knew about it as she thanked specifically Zunes and the MSA for inviting her explaining that her purpose there was to report back to USF students on the BDS movement and give them tools by which to engage in boycotting Israel over here. She thanked specifically Zunes and the MSA for inviting her.
Baum’s lecture could only be described as a form of lying by omission; that is, a style of presenting just enough information about a topic to elicit a positive or negative reaction without presenting all the facts just as Professor Zunes had done in trying to conflate South Africa’s apartheid years with Israel’s current dilemma with the Palestinian Authority. In some instances she just outright lied.Baum began by saying, The idea of having a Jewish only organization in Israel is like having a whites only racist organization here in America. She explained how the activist organizations she belonged to had been fortunate enough to join Arab groups in solidarity to oppose Israel’s current existence as a Jewish state. She spoke of an Arab civil society of women’s groups, educators, unions, Muslim groups, even communists that was working to end the occupation (she made it a point not to mention the myriad terrorist groups that make up the Palestinian Authority government-to-be or that these civil groups support the terror groups in their activities). She claimed she would speak only of the 1967 occupation of the West Bank but alluded many times to events in Gaza without mentioning rockets fired on Israeli communities. Baum began by showing a map of Israel and the Palestinian Authority then saying that Israel has no borders. She claimed that 3.5 million Palestinians live in the area but that the Israeli communities (settlements) had control over the main roads and implied only Jews were allowed to use them. She referred to the areas around the settlements as being ethnically cleansed, to suggest racism when the Arabs and most Israeli Jews are racially the same, but practice different religions. She made no effort to point out that Arabs who are Israeli citizens are the same ethnic and religious makeup as Arabs in the Palestinian Authority nor about how various security measures were needed because Palestinian terrorists routinely attack Israelis who use those roads. Nor did she say Arabs from the PA can use those roads after getting security clearance, such as taxi drivers. She told her audience, If you are Jewish you can go to some areas and if you’re not you can’t go to other areas all in a country that has no borders.” This was an example of leaving out just enough information to make a false impression. The truth is that if a person is an Arab and an Israeli citizen he is permitted to go anywhere any Jewish Israeli citizen goes.Palestinian Authority Arabs are restricted due to terror attacks on Israelis. Israel’s lack of permanent borders is because the Arab states back in 1967 all agreed to refuse to make peace with Israel so the borders are in fact temporary armistice lines subject to final negotiations as part of a peace deal. None of the students attending her lecture would have known this and clearly Baum and Zunes didn’t want them to.
Baum then accused Israel of profiting from the occupation by selling inferior goods to the Arab population in the West Bank such as spoiled food, what she attributed to neo-colonialism. She later tied this profiteering as being behind the security costs in the West Bank. The security costs are the costs of the Palestinian resistance she said. Meanwhile, she made no comment of terror attacks on Israeli citizens both in or outside Israel. She made no attempt to suggest that the Palestinian Authority government is run by a terrorist organization (Fatah) and myriad such organizations run things there such as Hamas and even the PFLP that works with her organizational network in Israel. Nor but did she mention that the Oslo Accords sought to set up an independent Palestinian state there years ago but terror attacks against Israelis had made this impossible. Through some twisted logic she determined that Israeli corporations that provide jobs for Palestinian Arabs should be boycotted in order to make Israel leave the area to the Palestinians, without once explaining how any such activity would benefit the average Palestinian Arab.Baum displayed a photo of boys at a weekly demonstration in the village of Bi’ilin. She urged people in the audience to boycott an Israeli firm that manufactures tear gas because tear gas can make you very sick and you could die, but she completely ignored that the Arab population in B’ilin every Friday stages a riot at the Security Fence where rocks, Molotov cocktails and other incendiaries are thrown as Israeli soldiers. She called these riots demonstrations and declared them nonviolent. then said she never attends them physically herself because she is scared of the violence that goes on only from the Israeli police.Baum then explained the three purposes of her movement and BDS: The first one was Repression which she explained was Israel’s need to control the population in the West Bank. She complained that security companies in the West Bank were profiting from the occupation and this was why the occupation would not end (no mention of Arab terror attacks on Israelis or the recent murder of an Israeli father of four on the highways which is an almost weekly occurrence). Baum displayed a photo of a section of the Security Fence that comprises large security walls and towers around Jerusalem but is really only about three per cent of the entire fence that is mostly barbed wire. The fence in the photo was set up to block sniper shots into the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo in Jerusalem from the surrounding hills.
Nobody in the audience would know this and apparently Baum didn’t want them to. Attempts to raise this information denied and referred to the 2x 4 cards to be answered later.Baum explained her own history as beginning with the anarchist lesbian group Black Laundry is Israel. She elicited giggles from audience as she explained funny things her group would do in near weekly demonstrations against the Israeli military. None of her audience would have known that just for being lesbian in a Palestinian state she would subject to murder, let alone practice her sexual orientation openly as in Israel, nor that homosexuals in the PA routinely flee to Israel for refuge. She described Black Laundry as the first time part of a huge nonviolent movement that was facing a very violent Israeli military had done anything. She continued, being a nonviolent activist, I don’t’ like violence (yet she had no qualms about stopping the Israeli military that protects Israelis from violence).Baum next tied Israeli security companies, some that do business in the US because Israel profits from US subsidies. She declared this was done to provide Israel with free security products.It was at this point that Baum also began explicitly lying in her presentation, not just omitting facts for an unknowing audience she and Zunes hoped to recruit. She displayed a photograph of Ofer Prison in the West Bank where the military and police incarcerate terrorists or violent rioters. She described it as a very terrible prison for Palestinian political prisoners. She later said that she had never been inside or toured the prison herself nor that Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s system routinely earn even Master’s degrees and PhD’s while in prison at the expense of the Israeli taxpayer.
She described the administrative courts near the prison and accused Israel of arresting 13 year-old kids dragged from their houses in the middle of the night and brought there. Nobody in the audience would know these are the same rock throwers who attack Israelis on the highways and at riots such as in Bi’lin.The implication was that Israeli police just raid homes for no reason at all.She objected to an unmanned robot vehicle Israel builds and uses that patrols the border urging the manufacturer be boycotted. She talked of Caterpillar and Rachel Corrie and Gaza and told the audience Israel routinely bulldozes homes with people in them. She falsely claimed the Israelis just pull up to civilian homes for no reason and give the occupants only a few moments to flee. if you are very old or unlikely you die. This was blatant lying. Home demolitions only are used to destroy homes that were used as bomb factories or homes of suicide bombers and they are not random.Settlements was her second issue she said because they are illegal…She said that since WWI international law consensus was it’s not a good idea to let states hold onto what they occupy of other countries in a war, because it leads to later wars. She never told her audience that Jewish settlements were in the West Bank and Gaza before the war in 1948. She claims to cite international law by the 4th Geneva convention which states no state can take over another country’s land by force. Such occupation it says must be temporary until agreement reached over time. But this is exactly what Israel has been doing all along Baum has no international law degree nor is the Geneva Accords even applicable as it only is between established states that are signatories to the accords. There was no Palestinian state in 1967 and the West Bank and Gaza were Jordan and Egypt who ceded the land to Israeli control after the war, in essence dumped the Palestinian population in Israel’s lap.
She complained Israel held land 44 years without mentioning the 3 no’s announced by the Arab League after the ’67 war: “No negotiations, no peace, no Israel. The settlements she claimed are illegal by international law but again they are not since UN Resolution 242 of the UN allowed Israel to regain land lost in 1948 as part of a negotiated peace settlement and final borders. We have the law on our side, she said but the audience would never know she was referring to kangaroo courts that routinely find fault with anything dominated by totalitarian regimes that condemn anything a democracy like Israel does. Baum is not an expert in international law.

Alerted that one of his faculty, the virulently anti-Israel and anti-US Stephen Zunes arranged for a recruiting session to boycott the Jews on the Bay Area campus sponsored by Global Exchange, a non-profit group that gave $600,000 in aid to al Qaeda while our marines were fighting in Fallujah and provides aid to Hamas, Pruitt followed the example of the World War II Pope: He did nothing to stop it. In fact, he stonewalled any communication with the Jewish community.
Lying by omission: University of San Francisco’s Middle East Studies Department hosts Dalit Baum’s lecture to recruit more BDS activists and financially ruin the Israeli economy By Lee Kaplan, investigator, analyst
On November 9th, 2011, the University of San Francisco’s Middle East Studies Department and International Studies Professor Stephen Zunes, the school’s Muslim Students Association (MSA), as well as the Bay Area non-profit Global Exchange all sponsored little more than an indoctrination session against the Jewish state of Israel and Jewish businesses. The event promoted the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement against Israel while trying to pass itself off as an academic event. Professor Zunes has a long history of antipathy against Israel as a US ally.
The guest speaker for that evening was Dalit Baum , who runs the website Who Profits? and is an Israeli leftist who in the past has called for the dismantling of the Jewish state and who boasted she has already cost the Israeli economy in excess of 1.5 billion dollars in promoting BDS against Israeli firms worldwide. Baum bills herself as a feminist scholar and was introduced as such by Zunes, even though she holds only a degree in math and has never published any academic work regarding feminism. Baum made clear during the evening she was at USF to present to the students “information” and “tools” they could use to boycott and divest from the Jewish state. Zunes remarked at Baum’s courage speaking at USF because of Israel’s new law allowing lawsuits by companies affected by BDS against activists like Baum.
As a form of perversion, the BDS Movement gets touted on college campuses by the likes of Zunes and Baum as some form of fighting oppression and human rights abuses when it is actually an extension of the Arab League Boycott against Israel that was created in 1950. Boycotting was the first political action step taken by the Nazi Party in 1933 that led to the Final Solution. It is a form of economic warfare to force Israel’s government to capitulate to Arab demands. Zunes and Baum also tried to conflate their boycott efforts by fallaciously comparing Israel today with the 1980’s apartheid South Africa in order to instill in those attending the idea that they were fighting oppression.Global Exchange, Baum’s main sponsor, is the fundraising arm for Medea Benjamin’s Code Pink, an NGO that routinely provides monetary and physical aid to the terrorist group Hamas whose charter calls for not only the killing and dispossession all of Israel’s Jews, but the complete annihilation of all world Jewry, so already the event was off to a shaky start. Code Pink/Global Exchange also sent $600,000 in aid to the Iraqi Resistance while US marines were fighting in Fallujah.A photograph of Medea Benjamin was flashed on the screen demonstrating against Israel overseas, but few in the audience would have seen the connection or recognized her and Zunes mentioned the organization as if it were a purveyor of brotherly love. Dalit Baum also condemned the US presence in Iraq and Afghanistan suggesting it was mainly for profits and like the dispute between Israel and the Palestinian Authority a form of neo-colonialism.In order to put some distance between the event and itself after some Jewish groups expressed alarm the event would be held on the Jesuit campus, the administration required the head of the Muslim Students Association read a disclaimer that stated, The presence of a guest speaker on the campus of the University of San Francisco does not necessarily imply approval or endorsement by the University of the views expressed by the guest speaker or by anyone present at the event. A communiqué also went out assuring critics that a question and answer session would follow to allow for differing points of view. 2 x 4 cards were passed out with instructions to write questions down that would be addressed later that evening.
After the disclaimer was read, Professor Stephen Zunes immediately stood before the room and stated he felt obliged to declaim the disclaimer.I’ve been teaching here for 15 years, he said, and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard it explicitly said. Why it had to be said is an indication it’s a challenge to raise human rights issues when you are dealing with a strategic ally of the United States [Israel]. Zunes reminisced about his own activism in boycotting South Africa and tried to conflate what when on there in the 1980’s with what Israel is dealing with in the Palestinian Authority. While he mentioned whites discriminated against blacks in South Africa, he avoided mentioning that Arabs who are Israeli citizens enjoy full civil rights the same as Jews and even have affirmative action programs in Israeli universities, own businesses and serve as judges, policemen and even in parliament . There is much to be said, he continued, about boycotts, divestment and sanctions as a way to raise a challenge to the Israeli occupation.However, he made no mention that the Palestinian Authority does practice genuine apartheid against Jews (not to mention terrorism) and even has a law on the books that metes out a death penalty for selling land to a Jew, even retroactively, and a constitution modeled after those of Iran and Saudi Arabia that do discriminate against religious minorities.Zunes then introduced Baum as an outstanding scholar and human rights activist.Baum began her lecture by first asking the audience how many of them had heard of the BDS movement or participated in it. She remarked that few in the audience knew about it as she thanked specifically Zunes and the MSA for inviting her explaining that her purpose there was to report back to USF students on the BDS movement and give them tools by which to engage in boycotting Israel over here. She thanked specifically Zunes and the MSA for inviting her.
Baum’s lecture could only be described as a form of lying by omission; that is, a style of presenting just enough information about a topic to elicit a positive or negative reaction without presenting all the facts just as Professor Zunes had done in trying to conflate South Africa’s apartheid years with Israel’s current dilemma with the Palestinian Authority. In some instances she just outright lied.Baum began by saying, The idea of having a Jewish only organization in Israel is like having a whites only racist organization here in America. She explained how the activist organizations she belonged to had been fortunate enough to join Arab groups in solidarity to oppose Israel’s current existence as a Jewish state. She spoke of an Arab civil society of women’s groups, educators, unions, Muslim groups, even communists that was working to end the occupation (she made it a point not to mention the myriad terrorist groups that make up the Palestinian Authority government-to-be or that these civil groups support the terror groups in their activities). She claimed she would speak only of the 1967 occupation of the West Bank but alluded many times to events in Gaza without mentioning rockets fired on Israeli communities. Baum began by showing a map of Israel and the Palestinian Authority then saying that Israel has no borders. She claimed that 3.5 million Palestinians live in the area but that the Israeli communities (settlements) had control over the main roads and implied only Jews were allowed to use them. She referred to the areas around the settlements as being ethnically cleansed, to suggest racism when the Arabs and most Israeli Jews are racially the same, but practice different religions. She made no effort to point out that Arabs who are Israeli citizens are the same ethnic and religious makeup as Arabs in the Palestinian Authority nor about how various security measures were needed because Palestinian terrorists routinely attack Israelis who use those roads. Nor did she say Arabs from the PA can use those roads after getting security clearance, such as taxi drivers. She told her audience, If you are Jewish you can go to some areas and if you’re not you can’t go to other areas all in a country that has no borders.” This was an example of leaving out just enough information to make a false impression. The truth is that if a person is an Arab and an Israeli citizen he is permitted to go anywhere any Jewish Israeli citizen goes.Palestinian Authority Arabs are restricted due to terror attacks on Israelis. Israel’s lack of permanent borders is because the Arab states back in 1967 all agreed to refuse to make peace with Israel so the borders are in fact temporary armistice lines subject to final negotiations as part of a peace deal. None of the students attending her lecture would have known this and clearly Baum and Zunes didn’t want them to.
Baum then accused Israel of profiting from the occupation by selling inferior goods to the Arab population in the West Bank such as spoiled food, what she attributed to neo-colonialism. She later tied this profiteering as being behind the security costs in the West Bank. The security costs are the costs of the Palestinian resistance she said. Meanwhile, she made no comment of terror attacks on Israeli citizens both in or outside Israel. She made no attempt to suggest that the Palestinian Authority government is run by a terrorist organization (Fatah) and myriad such organizations run things there such as Hamas and even the PFLP that works with her organizational network in Israel. Nor but did she mention that the Oslo Accords sought to set up an independent Palestinian state there years ago but terror attacks against Israelis had made this impossible. Through some twisted logic she determined that Israeli corporations that provide jobs for Palestinian Arabs should be boycotted in order to make Israel leave the area to the Palestinians, without once explaining how any such activity would benefit the average Palestinian Arab.Baum displayed a photo of boys at a weekly demonstration in the village of Bi’ilin. She urged people in the audience to boycott an Israeli firm that manufactures tear gas because tear gas can make you very sick and you could die, but she completely ignored that the Arab population in B’ilin every Friday stages a riot at the Security Fence where rocks, Molotov cocktails and other incendiaries are thrown as Israeli soldiers. She called these riots demonstrations and declared them nonviolent. then said she never attends them physically herself because she is scared of the violence that goes on only from the Israeli police.Baum then explained the three purposes of her movement and BDS: The first one was Repression which she explained was Israel’s need to control the population in the West Bank. She complained that security companies in the West Bank were profiting from the occupation and this was why the occupation would not end (no mention of Arab terror attacks on Israelis or the recent murder of an Israeli father of four on the highways which is an almost weekly occurrence). Baum displayed a photo of a section of the Security Fence that comprises large security walls and towers around Jerusalem but is really only about three per cent of the entire fence that is mostly barbed wire. The fence in the photo was set up to block sniper shots into the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo in Jerusalem from the surrounding hills.
Nobody in the audience would know this and apparently Baum didn’t want them to. Attempts to raise this information denied and referred to the 2x 4 cards to be answered later.Baum explained her own history as beginning with the anarchist lesbian group Black Laundry is Israel. She elicited giggles from audience as she explained funny things her group would do in near weekly demonstrations against the Israeli military. None of her audience would have known that just for being lesbian in a Palestinian state she would subject to murder, let alone practice her sexual orientation openly as in Israel, nor that homosexuals in the PA routinely flee to Israel for refuge. She described Black Laundry as the first time part of a huge nonviolent movement that was facing a very violent Israeli military had done anything. She continued, being a nonviolent activist, I don’t’ like violence (yet she had no qualms about stopping the Israeli military that protects Israelis from violence).Baum next tied Israeli security companies, some that do business in the US because Israel profits from US subsidies. She declared this was done to provide Israel with free security products.It was at this point that Baum also began explicitly lying in her presentation, not just omitting facts for an unknowing audience she and Zunes hoped to recruit. She displayed a photograph of Ofer Prison in the West Bank where the military and police incarcerate terrorists or violent rioters. She described it as a very terrible prison for Palestinian political prisoners. She later said that she had never been inside or toured the prison herself nor that Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s system routinely earn even Master’s degrees and PhD’s while in prison at the expense of the Israeli taxpayer.
She described the administrative courts near the prison and accused Israel of arresting 13 year-old kids dragged from their houses in the middle of the night and brought there. Nobody in the audience would know these are the same rock throwers who attack Israelis on the highways and at riots such as in Bi’lin.The implication was that Israeli police just raid homes for no reason at all.She objected to an unmanned robot vehicle Israel builds and uses that patrols the border urging the manufacturer be boycotted. She talked of Caterpillar and Rachel Corrie and Gaza and told the audience Israel routinely bulldozes homes with people in them. She falsely claimed the Israelis just pull up to civilian homes for no reason and give the occupants only a few moments to flee. if you are very old or unlikely you die. This was blatant lying. Home demolitions only are used to destroy homes that were used as bomb factories or homes of suicide bombers and they are not random.Settlements was her second issue she said because they are illegal…She said that since WWI international law consensus was it’s not a good idea to let states hold onto what they occupy of other countries in a war, because it leads to later wars. She never told her audience that Jewish settlements were in the West Bank and Gaza before the war in 1948. She claims to cite international law by the 4th Geneva convention which states no state can take over another country’s land by force. Such occupation it says must be temporary until agreement reached over time. But this is exactly what Israel has been doing all along Baum has no international law degree nor is the Geneva Accords even applicable as it only is between established states that are signatories to the accords. There was no Palestinian state in 1967 and the West Bank and Gaza were Jordan and Egypt who ceded the land to Israeli control after the war, in essence dumped the Palestinian population in Israel’s lap.
She complained Israel held land 44 years without mentioning the 3 no’s announced by the Arab League after the ’67 war: “No negotiations, no peace, no Israel. With the IAEA discussing a dramatic new report from its nuclear inspectors in Iran, are some – such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – exaggerating the imminence of a nuclear-armed Iran? Or is the U.S. government hopelessly misleading us that the threat is manageable through sanctions and tough talk? A series of extraordinary leaks in the Israeli press last week revealed an internal debate within Israel’s inner security cabinet over the need to launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons sites.According to these reports, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Barak favored the strikes; Vice prime minister and strategic affairs minister Moshe Bogey Ya’alon reportedly was opposed. The leaks came on the heels of the third test-launch of a Jericho 3 nuclear-capable strategic missile, and what Israel claimed were long-planned air force exercises over Sardinia to simulate an attack on Iran.According to former CIA case officer turned novelist Chet Nagle, the Jericho 3 test may have been designed by Israel to send quite a different message than the one being played up in the press.Any Israeli attack on Iran is sure to make of Israel an international pariah, Nagle argues. Plus, the likelihood of success – that is, in destroying or disabling all of Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities so they have nothing to launch on the morning after the attack – is low.
If you’re going to go to all that trouble and be a pariah, why not take one of those Jericho missiles, and detonate it 300 miles above the surface and deliver an EMP strike on Iran? Nagel says. That would stop their clock – if it’s electric – as well as all those centrifuges and everything else. Then the Greens can take over the country and we can go back in and rebuild the grid.Nagel was speaking with me and other analysts last week at a briefing organized by EMPact America for Congressional staff. His comments, while purely suggestive in nature, hint at a much larger strategic truth: if Israel is going to attack Iran, they have to make sure they totally disable Iran’s ability to launch a nuclear weapon.How better to achieve that goal than a nuclear electro-magnetic pulse strike that would take down Iran’s power grid – and with it, even secret nuclear weapons plants Israel might fail to hit otherwise? EMP or not, Israel was certainly making a show of force in an effort to convince Iran to back off its nuclear plans. On that score, from what we see in public at least, Israel had little success.According to Iranian press reports cited on Sunday by the Debkafile, top Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commanders in Iran were shaking their fists.In one unsigned editorial from the IRGC’s Fars news agency, the Guards threatened to utterly destroy Israel with just four missiles if Israel dared to launch any kind of attack on Iran.Which brings us to the question, what if Iran already had the bomb?
Former IRGC officer and undercover CIA spy, Reza Kahlili, believes Iran acquired nuclear warheads from a former Soviet republic at the end of the Cold War, and has designed its own nuclear warhead with the help of Ukrainian scientists.As I reported in my 2005 book, Countdown to Crisis: the Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran, IRGC commander Gen. Mohsen Rezai traveled to North Korea in January 1993, seeking assistance in arming those warheads. My informant, a top advisor to Gen. Rezai who later defected (and who spoke with me), said the North Koreans agreed to provide that help.From that day forward, Iran believed it had a nuclear deterrent – not a strike force, but at least a deterrent – and its behavior changed. The IRGC believed they could carry out aggressive acts against the United States, including a terror alliance with Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda, and the U.S. would never strike back with any consequence, and certainly would not strike the Iranian homeland.This week’s IAEA report is only the latest in a series of revelations from the UN nuclear watchdog in Vienna that has documented Iran’s long march toward nuclear weapons.
Despite these reports, nuclear skeptics continue to claim that Iran is hopelessly disorganized, incompetent, incapable, and lacking the will to defy the international community and deploy nuclear weapons.Just three weeks ago, the same nuclear analyst quoted this week by the Washington Post to sound the alarm about the latest IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear weapons progress, David Albright, was telling folks how the Stuxnet virus had crippled Iran’s ability to enrich uranium.As they say, what a difference a week makes.We’ve had Indicators and Warnings of Iran’s nuclear weapons intentions going back twenty-five years.In late 1986, the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency publicly announced it was signing a consulting agreement with a Pakistani metallurgist named AQ Khan. I wrote about this agreement at the time – and continued writing about these Indicators and Warnings as they became known.In 1992, the Simon Wiesenthal Center asked me to compile this information into a monograph called Weapons of Mass Destruction: the cases Iran, Syria, and Libya. At that time, I was looking at patterns emerging from Iran’s procurement of certain dual-use technologies that were needed for a centrifuge enrichment program.It was clear to me then, as it was to many others, that Iran had a uranium enrichment program. But the U.S. intelligence community failed to connect the dots. Even in 2005 when I wrote a narrative version of Iran’s nuclear weapons development program in Countdown to Crisis, noteworthy scholars dismissed my information as sensational and based on faulty sources.This week’s IAEA report shows beyond a doubt that Iran has cold-tested all the components of a workable nuclear weapon design, as I reported in June. It also shows Iran had significant assistance from a Russian nuclear weapons scientists, who for five years helped Iran to design a nuclear weapons trigger.
Rather than a haphazard effort, Iran’s nuclear weapons research was managed through a program structure, assisted by advisory bodies, and that, owing to the importance of these efforts, senior Iranian figures featured within this command structure, the IAEA report found.The program was run out of a Scientific Committee under the auspices of the Defense Ministry’s Education Research Institute, the IAEA found.The IAEA report also shoots down – yet again – the National Intelligence Council’s fatally flawed 2007 National Intelligence on Iran, which stated at the outset that Iran had stopped nuclear weapons research in 2003. The IAEA found that the research continued, underground and unreported.And yet, in a recent talk to intelligence community retirees and other guests, the Director of National Intelligence, Lt. Gen. James Clapper, said his fingerprints were all over the 2007 NIE and that he stood by it one hundred percent.How much more information do we need to understand that Iran is hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons and threatening to use them against Israel and the United States? How many more dots do we need before our intelligence community and our political leaders connect them to read the words IMMINENT THREAT spelled out just like that, in capital letters? Iran’s leaders believe the end of days is come, and that by annhiliating Israel with a nuclear weapon they can hasten the return of the 12th imam, the Imam Mahdi of Shiite Muslim eschatology.But in response to Iran’s latest efforts, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the State Department would open a virtual embassy to Iran, and gave an interview to the BBC Persian service where she claimed the Obama Administration failed to respond to the June 2009 protests in Iran because their Iran advisors counseled them against it.
Here’s a novel thought: if our intelligence analysts, including those right at the top, fail to connect the dots, why don’t we just fire them? Stay tuned.

WASHINGTON—The United Nations' nuclear agency said Iran has developed technologies needed to produce nuclear weapons, a finding that puts new pressure on the Obama administration to act more forcefully against Tehran.The International Atomic Energy Agency, in its first public airing of such charges, said Tuesday that Tehran appears to have conducted advanced research on a miniaturized warhead that could be delivered by medium-range missiles. The watchdog agency also cited evidence that Iran has worked to develop the uranium metal used for warheads and said it has conducted computer simulations of nuclear detonations.The 25-page report represents the loudest alarm yet sounded by the agency in a decade-long standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, and comes as Israeli officials have discussed a possible military strike. It will also raise questions over which avenues the U.S., already under pressure domestically and internationally to ratchet up penalties against Tehran following several rounds of sanctions, has left to pursue.The United Nations' nuclear agency for the first time publicly charged Iran with developing the technologies used to develop nuclear weapons. Iran, which has steadfastly denied that its nuclear program aims to produce weapons, quickly attacked the contents of the IAEA report. Tehran's ambassador to the agency, Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, told diplomats in Vienna that the agency's work was unbalanced, unprofessional and politically motivated.Some of the information in the report was contained in a secret paper that the IAEA had developed on the state of Iran's nuclear program in 2008 and 2009. But the IAEA's director general at the time, Mohamed ElBaradei, ruled against making the report public, according to diplomats based in Vienna, due to concerns the information wasn't sufficiently substantiated.Successive U.S. and European governments have pressed the IAEA to take a more aggressive public line on the state of Iran's nuclear program. Officials in President George W. Bush's administration complained that Mr. ElBaradei had softened reports on Iran's nuclear program in hopes of brokering a diplomatic agreement with Tehran, a charge he denied.U.S. officials successfully lobbied last year for Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano to succeed Mr. ElBaradei. As Mr. Amano has taken a tougher line on Iran, relations between Tehran and the IAEA have deteriorated.

It's unfortunate that they have put a person as the head of this agency who has no will of his own, Mr. Ahmadinejad said in a speech to Iranian students.The report is based on more than 1,000 pages of documents generated by the IAEA itself, from Iran and from more than 10 member states of the U.N. agency. All of this information, taken together, gave rise to concerns about possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program,the IAEA report said.

But Tehran razed the offices of the program's headquarters and moved to disperse its nuclear-weapons research following the initial exposure of some of its clandestine activities in 2002.The IAEA said a senior Iranian defense official, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, is a constant in the apparent weapons work, moving in recent years from the Defense Ministry's offices to Malek Ashtar University in Tehran. From here, the Iranian official has continued to oversee a range of studies relevant in nuclear-weapons work, the agency said.The report appeared to contradict the U.S. government's most recent intelligence assessment on Iran's nuclear program from 2007, which concluded that Tehran suspended its weapons research in 2003. The assessment said Iran made this decision, in part, in response to the U.S. government's invasion of neighboring Iraq the same year.But the IAEA detailed a number of areas where Iran allegedly continued to conduct experimentation after 2003. One key area of continuing research is in the computer modeling of nuclear detonations, which is used in developing warheads. The IAEA said Tehran conducted research in 2008 and 2009 on developing the core of such a warhead, which would use highly enriched uranium.The IAEA report said Iran has produced enough fissile material for as many as four bombs, if it is enriched further to weapons grade.
The IAEA also said evidence it gathered indicates that Iran has continued research into triggering devices for nuclear bombs. The report said Tehran acknowledged to the agency in 2008 that it had developed such technology for civil and conventional military applications. But the IAEA said Iran has not explained…its own need for application for such detonators.U.S. officials declined to say if the IAEA's report would cause U.S. intelligence agencies to reassess their conclusions on Iran.The report hasn't concluded that [Iran] put in place the same structured program as before, said an administration official.It also doesn't say how advanced it is.The report also details what the IAEA believes has been expansive support for Iran's nuclear program from overseas scientists. Though the IAEA didn't name all of these alleged collaborators, diplomats briefed on the report said they include North Korea, the nuclear-smuggling network run by the Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and a senior Russian nuclear scientist.The report reaffirmed long-held beliefs that Mr. Khan sold centrifuges for uranium enrichment to Iran. But it also raised concerns that Tehran may have also obtained warhead designs from the Pakistani official.Officials briefed on the report also said the IAEA believes North Korea is the foreign government named in the report as assisting Tehran in conducting computer modeling of nuclear detonations.They said a former Russian nuclear scientist, Vyacheslav Danilenko, is the official cited in the report as making a string of visits to Tehran from 1996 through 2002 to help Iran develop a high-explosive initiation system, which can be used to trigger a nuclear device. The IAEA said they were told during consultations that this work was for non-nuclear applications.
The report's publication is expected to set off another round of deliberations among the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council on what measures to take next on Iran. Diplomats at the IAEA said Russia and China had lobbied against making public the latest report for fear that it will make Tehran more recalcitrant in its dealings with the international community.The U.N. Security Council has passed four rounds of sanctions against Iran since 2006 that have significantly hampered Iran's ability to conduct business and access the international financial system. But few Iran experts believe the current measures will be enough to cause Iran's theocratic leadership to engage in serious negotiations with the U.S. on constraining its nuclear work.Iran has taken an increasingly aggressive posture in recent days in response to Israeli threats and in anticipation of the IAEA report. Senior officials in Iran's elite military unit, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, have said they will directly target U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan if they are attacked by Israel.They have also said they would deploy naval vessels in the Gulf of Mexico if the U.S. takes a more aggressive posture in the Persian Gulf.The American military should not forget that its generals are present in the region, Gen. With the IAEA discussing a dramatic new report from its nuclear inspectors in Iran, are some – such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – exaggerating the imminence of a nuclear-armed Iran? Or is the U.S. government hopelessly misleading us that the threat is manageable through sanctions and tough talk? A series of extraordinary leaks in the Israeli press last week revealed an internal debate within Israel’s inner security cabinet over the need to launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons sites.According to these reports, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Barak favored the strikes; Vice prime minister and strategic affairs minister Moshe Bogey Ya’alon reportedly was opposed. The leaks came on the heels of the third test-launch of a Jericho 3 nuclear-capable strategic missile, and what Israel claimed were long-planned air force exercises over Sardinia to simulate an attack on Iran.According to former CIA case officer turned novelist Chet Nagle, the Jericho 3 test may have been designed by Israel to send quite a different message than the one being played up in the press.Any Israeli attack on Iran is sure to make of Israel an international pariah, Nagle argues. Plus, the likelihood of success – that is, in destroying or disabling all of Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities so they have nothing to launch on the morning after the attack – is low.
If you’re going to go to all that trouble and be a pariah, why not take one of those Jericho missiles, and detonate it 300 miles above the surface and deliver an EMP strike on Iran? Nagel says. That would stop their clock – if it’s electric – as well as all those centrifuges and everything else. Then the Greens can take over the country and we can go back in and rebuild the grid.Nagel was speaking with me and other analysts last week at a briefing organized by EMPact America for Congressional staff. His comments, while purely suggestive in nature, hint at a much larger strategic truth: if Israel is going to attack Iran, they have to make sure they totally disable Iran’s ability to launch a nuclear weapon.How better to achieve that goal than a nuclear electro-magnetic pulse strike that would take down Iran’s power grid – and with it, even secret nuclear weapons plants Israel might fail to hit otherwise? EMP or not, Israel was certainly making a show of force in an effort to convince Iran to back off its nuclear plans. On that score, from what we see in public at least, Israel had little success.According to Iranian press reports cited on Sunday by the Debkafile, top Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commanders in Iran were shaking their fists.In one unsigned editorial from the IRGC’s Fars news agency, the Guards threatened to utterly destroy Israel with just four missiles if Israel dared to launch any kind of attack on Iran.Which brings us to the question, what if Iran already had the bomb?
Former IRGC officer and undercover CIA spy, Reza Kahlili, believes Iran acquired nuclear warheads from a former Soviet republic at the end of the Cold War, and has designed its own nuclear warhead with the help of Ukrainian scientists.As I reported in my 2005 book, Countdown to Crisis: the Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran, IRGC commander Gen. Mohsen Rezai traveled to North Korea in January 1993, seeking assistance in arming those warheads. My informant, a top advisor to Gen. Rezai who later defected (and who spoke with me), said the North Koreans agreed to provide that help.From that day forward, Iran believed it had a nuclear deterrent – not a strike force, but at least a deterrent – and its behavior changed. The IRGC believed they could carry out aggressive acts against the United States, including a terror alliance with Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda, and the U.S. would never strike back with any consequence, and certainly would not strike the Iranian homeland.This week’s IAEA report is only the latest in a series of revelations from the UN nuclear watchdog in Vienna that has documented Iran’s long march toward nuclear weapons.
Despite these reports, nuclear skeptics continue to claim that Iran is hopelessly disorganized, incompetent, incapable, and lacking the will to defy the international community and deploy nuclear weapons.Just three weeks ago, the same nuclear analyst quoted this week by the Washington Post to sound the alarm about the latest IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear weapons progress, David Albright, was telling folks how the Stuxnet virus had crippled Iran’s ability to enrich uranium.As they say, what a difference a week makes.We’ve had Indicators and Warnings of Iran’s nuclear weapons intentions going back twenty-five years.In late 1986, the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency publicly announced it was signing a consulting agreement with a Pakistani metallurgist named AQ Khan. I wrote about this agreement at the time – and continued writing about these Indicators and Warnings as they became known.In 1992, the Simon Wiesenthal Center asked me to compile this information into a monograph called Weapons of Mass Destruction: the cases Iran, Syria, and Libya. At that time, I was looking at patterns emerging from Iran’s procurement of certain dual-use technologies that were needed for a centrifuge enrichment program.It was clear to me then, as it was to many others, that Iran had a uranium enrichment program. But the U.S. intelligence community failed to connect the dots. Even in 2005 when I wrote a narrative version of Iran’s nuclear weapons development program in Countdown to Crisis, noteworthy scholars dismissed my information as sensational and based on faulty sources.This week’s IAEA report shows beyond a doubt that Iran has cold-tested all the components of a workable nuclear weapon design, as I reported in June. It also shows Iran had significant assistance from a Russian nuclear weapons scientists, who for five years helped Iran to design a nuclear weapons trigger.
Rather than a haphazard effort, Iran’s nuclear weapons research was managed through a program structure, assisted by advisory bodies, and that, owing to the importance of these efforts, senior Iranian figures featured within this command structure, the IAEA report found.The program was run out of a Scientific Committee under the auspices of the Defense Ministry’s Education Research Institute, the IAEA found.The IAEA report also shoots down – yet again – the National Intelligence Council’s fatally flawed 2007 National Intelligence on Iran, which stated at the outset that Iran had stopped nuclear weapons research in 2003. The IAEA found that the research continued, underground and unreported.And yet, in a recent talk to intelligence community retirees and other guests, the Director of National Intelligence, Lt. Gen. James Clapper, said his fingerprints were all over the 2007 NIE and that he stood by it one hundred percent.How much more information do we need to understand that Iran is hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons and threatening to use them against Israel and the United States? How many more dots do we need before our intelligence community and our political leaders connect them to read the words IMMINENT THREAT spelled out just like that, in capital letters? Iran’s leaders believe the end of days is come, and that by annhiliating Israel with a nuclear weapon they can hasten the return of the 12th imam, the Imam Mahdi of Shiite Muslim eschatology.But in response to Iran’s latest efforts, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the State Department would open a virtual embassy to Iran, and gave an interview to the BBC Persian service where she claimed the Obama Administration failed to respond to the June 2009 protests in Iran because their Iran advisors counseled them against it.
Here’s a novel thought: if our intelligence analysts, including those right at the top, fail to connect the dots, why don’t we just fire them? Stay tuned.

WASHINGTON—The United Nations' nuclear agency said Iran has developed technologies needed to produce nuclear weapons, a finding that puts new pressure on the Obama administration to act more forcefully against Tehran.The International Atomic Energy Agency, in its first public airing of such charges, said Tuesday that Tehran appears to have conducted advanced research on a miniaturized warhead that could be delivered by medium-range missiles. The watchdog agency also cited evidence that Iran has worked to develop the uranium metal used for warheads and said it has conducted computer simulations of nuclear detonations.The 25-page report represents the loudest alarm yet sounded by the agency in a decade-long standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, and comes as Israeli officials have discussed a possible military strike. It will also raise questions over which avenues the U.S., already under pressure domestically and internationally to ratchet up penalties against Tehran following several rounds of sanctions, has left to pursue.The United Nations' nuclear agency for the first time publicly charged Iran with developing the technologies used to develop nuclear weapons. Eduardo Kaplan has details on The News Hub.While U.S. officials say Washington will try to use the report to bring new sanctions, the Obama administration has stepped back from one potential target—sanctioning Iran's central bank, the principal conduit for Iran's oil sales. Administration officials have voiced fears that blacklisting the bank could significantly drive up international oil prices and hurt the U.S. economy.

Iran, which has steadfastly denied that its nuclear program aims to produce weapons, quickly attacked the contents of the IAEA report. Tehran's ambassador to the agency, Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, told diplomats in Vienna that the agency's work was unbalanced, unprofessional and politically motivated.Some of the information in the report was contained in a secret paper that the IAEA had developed on the state of Iran's nuclear program in 2008 and 2009. But the IAEA's director general at the time, Mohamed ElBaradei, ruled against making the report public, according to diplomats based in Vienna, due to concerns the information wasn't sufficiently substantiated.Successive U.S. and European governments have pressed the IAEA to take a more aggressive public line on the state of Iran's nuclear program. Officials in President George W. Bush's administration complained that Mr. ElBaradei had softened reports on Iran's nuclear program in hopes of brokering a diplomatic agreement with Tehran, a charge he denied.U.S. officials successfully lobbied last year for Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano to succeed Mr. ElBaradei. As Mr. Amano has taken a tougher line on Iran, relations between Tehran and the IAEA have deteriorated.

It's unfortunate that they have put a person as the head of this agency who has no will of his own, Mr. Ahmadinejad said in a speech to Iranian students.The report is based on more than 1,000 pages of documents generated by the IAEA itself, from Iran and from more than 10 member states of the U.N. agency. All of this information, taken together, gave rise to concerns about possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program,the IAEA report said.

But Tehran razed the offices of the program's headquarters and moved to disperse its nuclear-weapons research following the initial exposure of some of its clandestine activities in 2002.The IAEA said a senior Iranian defense official, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, is a constant in the apparent weapons work, moving in recent years from the Defense Ministry's offices to Malek Ashtar University in Tehran. From here, the Iranian official has continued to oversee a range of studies relevant in nuclear-weapons work, the agency said.The report appeared to contradict the U.S. government's most recent intelligence assessment on Iran's nuclear program from 2007, which concluded that Tehran suspended its weapons research in 2003. The assessment said Iran made this decision, in part, in response to the U.S. government's invasion of neighboring Iraq the same year.But the IAEA detailed a number of areas where Iran allegedly continued to conduct experimentation after 2003. One key area of continuing research is in the computer modeling of nuclear detonations, which is used in developing warheads. The IAEA said Tehran conducted research in 2008 and 2009 on developing the core of such a warhead, which would use highly enriched uranium.The IAEA report said Iran has produced enough fissile material for as many as four bombs, if it is enriched further to weapons grade.
The IAEA also said evidence it gathered indicates that Iran has continued research into triggering devices for nuclear bombs. The report said Tehran acknowledged to the agency in 2008 that it had developed such technology for civil and conventional military applications. But the IAEA said Iran has not explained…its own need for application for such detonators.U.S. officials declined to say if the IAEA's report would cause U.S. intelligence agencies to reassess their conclusions on Iran.The report hasn't concluded that [Iran] put in place the same structured program as before, said an administration official.It also doesn't say how advanced it is.The report also details what the IAEA believes has been expansive support for Iran's nuclear program from overseas scientists. Though the IAEA didn't name all of these alleged collaborators, diplomats briefed on the report said they include North Korea, the nuclear-smuggling network run by the Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and a senior Russian nuclear scientist.The report reaffirmed long-held beliefs that Mr. Khan sold centrifuges for uranium enrichment to Iran. But it also raised concerns that Tehran may have also obtained warhead designs from the Pakistani official.Officials briefed on the report also said the IAEA believes North Korea is the foreign government named in the report as assisting Tehran in conducting computer modeling of nuclear detonations.They said a former Russian nuclear scientist, Vyacheslav Danilenko, is the official cited in the report as making a string of visits to Tehran from 1996 through 2002 to help Iran develop a high-explosive initiation system, which can be used to trigger a nuclear device. The IAEA said they were told during consultations that this work was for non-nuclear applications.
The report's publication is expected to set off another round of deliberations among the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council on what measures to take next on Iran. Diplomats at the IAEA said Russia and China had lobbied against making public the latest report for fear that it will make Tehran more recalcitrant in its dealings with the international community.The U.N. Security Council has passed four rounds of sanctions against Iran since 2006 that have significantly hampered Iran's ability to conduct business and access the international financial system. But few Iran experts believe the current measures will be enough to cause Iran's theocratic leadership to engage in serious negotiations with the U.S. on constraining its nuclear work.Iran has taken an increasingly aggressive posture in recent days in response to Israeli threats and in anticipation of the IAEA report. Senior officials in Iran's elite military unit, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, have said they will directly target U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan if they are attacked by Israel.They have also said they would deploy naval vessels in the Gulf of Mexico if the U.S. takes a more aggressive posture in the Persian Gulf.The American military should not forget that its generals are present in the region, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, senior Revolutionary Guards officer, told Iranian state media Tuesday.
