It's going to be a busy year for end-of-the-world aficionados, now that Jose De Jesus Miranda has weighed in.The U.S.-based religious leader is penciling in June 30 for the end of days, nudging out Mayan Doomsday enthusiasts who have have earmarked December 21, 2012 for humanity's last gasp."An earthquake is coming," Miranda proclaimed in an April 25 ministry broadcast."It is getting closer and we will see the catastrophes. What you have seen is nothing. What is coming is cities falling."But Miranda is bringing his own unique twist to the Apocalypse-faithful. While promising the "complete destruction of the bad seed," the minister promises that he will emerge as a sort of superhero -- with the power to fly and even walk through walls.Mr. Doomsday, if you will. Or, as his followers call him, 'Dad'. What we do know of Miranda is that he was, in fact, born mortal -- in Puerto Rico in 1946. By his own account, Miranda was visited by Jesus in 1973 -- apparently the Messiah walked up to him and entered his body.Hence, De Jesus.From there, his pronouncements have only gotten more interesting.In 1988, Miranda disclosed that he was actually the Apostle Paul. Not long after that, Miranda took it to the next level, calling himself both Jesus Christ and the Anti-Christ -- a one-stop shop for all your Reckoning needs.And that Reckoning is at the world's doorstep.

EZEKIEL 48:1-8
1 Now these are the names of the tribes. From the north end to the coast of the way of Hethlon, as one goeth to Hamath, Hazarenan, the border of Damascus northward, to the coast of Hamath; for these are his sides east and west; a portion for Dan.

8  And by the border of Judah, from the east side unto the west side, shall be the offering which ye shall offer of five and twenty thousand reeds in breadth, and in length as one of the other parts, from the east side unto the west side: and the sanctuary shall be in the midst of it.

ISAIAH 11:11-16

13  The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.
14  But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines (PALESTINIANS) toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab;(JORDAN) and the children of Ammon shall obey them.
15  And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea;(MEDITERRANEAN) and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river,(NILE) and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
16  And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people,(10 TRIBES) which shall be left, from Assyria;(SYRIA) like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.

JEREMIAH 3:18,14-17
18  In those days (LAST DAYS) the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north (RUSSIA) to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.(ISRAEL)

14  For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not:
15  So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not.
16  These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:
17  And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.
18  And the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me, saying,
19  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.
20  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities:
21  And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also.
22  Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.
23  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

1 The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD.

23  The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him:
24  But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
25  Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:

27  Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.

29  And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
30  In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace.

30  And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:
31  And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.
32  These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.
33  But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.

BRUSSELS - A German-led report shows lacklustre support for the creation of a powerful new EU leader.
The eight-page paper - circulated to press on Wednesday (20 June) - is a snapshot of current thinking in German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle's reflection group on the future of the Union.It says that: "Some foreign ministers suggested to examine the creation of a double-hatted post of President of the [European] Commission and President of the European Council."It also describes as an "important step" the potential "nomination of a top candidate for the next European elections that could also be a candidate for the position of commission President."It adds that "in the long term" there "could" be "a directly elected commission President who chooses the members of his 'European Government.'The hodge-podge of remarks pointing toward the new post reflects member states' mixed emotions about giving more power to Brussels in order to fight the crisis.The "Future of Europe Group" has been meeting since March and aims to produce a final manifesto in September.Besides Westerwelle, it includes the foreign ministers of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Spain.France - which changed foreign ministers after elections in May - has missed some of the meetings and was not on Westerwelle's list of countries which endorse the interim communique.Denmark has also skipped meetings out of solidarity with countries, such as Sweden, who were not invited in the first place.The foreign ministers of Austria and the Netherlands back in April publicly distanced themselves from the super-president idea when news of it came out in EUobserver.Meanwhile, the UK is out of the group amid even deeper misgivings about national sovereignty in London.The report notes that further integration should "preferably" include all 27 EU countries. But "if need be" the Union should rely on "enhanced co-operation" between subsets of countries.
Among other bold ideas, it speaks of a future "European Army," a "European Border Police" and giving the European Parliament "the ability to initiate legislation" alongside the commission.The proposals are also hedged in the vocabulary of could, should and maybe.The paper says more strongly that eurobonds, or "the question of mutualisation of sovereign risk," is a no-go area for now."There were differing views expressed [on the question]," it notes, with Germany the principal opponent of the scheme.

Ministers ponder creation of EU super-president

BRUSSELS - Ideas kicking around in a reflection group of select EU foreign ministers include merging the roles of the EU Council and European Commission presidents.A senior EU source told this website following a meeting of the club in the Val Duchesse stately home in Brussels on Thursday (19 April) that the new supremo would have more power than either Herman Van Rompuy or Jose Manuel Barroso do today but also more "democratic legitimacy" because he or she would be elected by MEPs.In other reforms, the new figure would "streamline" the European Commission into a two-tier structure.Every EU country would still have its own commissioner with their own vote in the college of 27 top officials. But as in some national set-ups, some commissioners would have more than one dossier while others would be the equivalent of ministers without portfolio.The new super-president would also chair General Affairs Councils (GACs) - monthly meetings of foreign ministers which discuss internal Union affairs."I have heard experts who say that it [the Van-Rompuy-Barroso merger] could be done without changing the [Lisbon] Treaty ... there is no appetite for a new Treaty," the EU source said.The EU Council President post was created by the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. But the Lisbon architecture is messy: Van Rompuy, for instance, oversees debate on EU fiscal reform, while Barroso's commission puts forward its own ideas and implements final decisions.
Van Rompuy and Barroso also represent the Union at international summits. But Van Rompuy is top dog in terms of protocol, while the EU "high representative" - Catherine Ashton - does day-to-day foreign relations.
Manwhile, the GAC - an increasingly important policy-making body - is still chaired by a national minister from the rotating EU presidency.The reflection group was formed by German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle in Berlin in March. It plans to meet two more times before the summer recess and to circulate a discussion paper at EU27-level in September.The other countries in the club are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Spain. The French minister did not attend Thursday's session, however.The Val Duchesse event also included talks on "eurobonds" - the idea of mutualising EU government debt, a controversial one in Germany, where voters are hostile to paying more to borrow money so that weaker economies in the south can pay less."It could be acceptable for new projects but not to guarantee bad ones from the past, or old bad debt," the EU source said.

PRC brigades: 15 rockets fired into Israel

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees said it fired 15 rockets into southern Israel on Tuesday in response to Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.Abu Mujahed, spokesman of the Nasser Salah ad-Din Brigades, said Israel had started the escalation in fighting. Israel has killed six Palestinians since Monday in a series of airstrikes and tank shelling.Abu Mujahed said the brigades fired 12 rockets across the border on Tuesday evening. The Palestinian resistance will not stand idle while Israel attacks the Palestinian people, he said in a statement.Earlier Tuesday, the brigades said it fired three projectiles across the border. "The enemy won't impose the regulations of the game this time on the resistance. Jerusalem: The Vatican is about to "indirectly recognise" Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem, seen by many Palestinians as the future capital of their independent state, a media report on Monday said.

This would be done if the draft of an economic agreement between the Jewish state and the Holy See, containing no distinction between sovereign Israel and the territories occupied by it in 1967, is approved by the two sides, Ha'aretz online reported. The lack of a preamble containing such a distinction is at the center of heightened tension between Palestinian Christian denominations and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the Vatican, it saidPalestinian sources told the Israeli daily that the agreement would mean "indirect recognition" of Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem and of the imposition of Israeli law in part of the West Bank.France, which has special standing as custodian of holy Christian sites and Christian communities, is also said to be concerned at the apparent latent recognition of the annexation and the economic implications for the communities, and particularly its Christian institutions in the country and the people who are part of them, the report said.


Contrary to the Palestinian concern, a "well informed source" is quoted as saying that "there is nothing in the agreement to harm the rights of the Palestinians," and that the agreement was made with the sovereign State of Israel in its internationally recognised identity, and therefore there was no need for a clarifying preamble. The Bilateral Permanent Working Commission between the Holy See and the State of Israel is to meet in Rome today and tomorrow to continue with talks held in Jerusalem last week, addressing matters of disagreement.

Negotiations toward an agreement on the fiscal status of Catholic institutions in Israel have been underway for 13 years, 11 more than the original two years allocated in what is known as the "fundamental agreement".The signing of that accord by Israel and the Vatican on December 30, 1993 had led to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Israel.Over the past few months, NGOs and members of various Christian denominations in Israel have begun to receive details about the draft agreement, which has been presented to them as a lapse and a failure by the Vatican, the daily said.The people who informed Palestinian Christians and NGOs of their concerns preferred not to approach the Palestinian Authority (PA) immediately because they did not believe that PA could act on its own in this diplomatic and legal realm.Members of the Christian community in Jerusalem and the West Bank have held a number of emergency meetings recently and have contacted the Vatican to make clear that the agreement under discussion is not merely a fiscal and a technical agreement, and that a lack of distinction between occupied territory and Israeli territory could have severe implications, Ha'aretz said.The legal agreement, known as the 'Legal Personality Agreement' was signed on November 10, 1997, but never ratified by Israel, it said.Meetings on fiscal issues, which relate to property rights, actions involving property by church bodies, and Issues of taxation and tax exemption, began in 1999 and have still not been concluded.The parties decided to exclude a list, known as "Schedule 1", of institutions on both sides of the Green Line from the text of that agreement, with regard to which they felt they would not be able to resolve differences soon.Among the sites and institutions on the list are those in which ownership and possession are in dispute, such as properties that Israel has expropriated or whose owners were declared absentees and the Church wants to take possession of again, or sites that Israel has declared open to the public and the Church believes should remain in the private sphere.A draft of the agreement, dated January 25, 2012, which Ha'aretz has said to have obtained, appears to address Israeli law in a general way, without relating to or alluding to Israel's status as an occupying power according to international law, the report said.The same is the case with regard to sites in East Jerusalem.A Palestinian lawyer, who reflects the position of the Palestinian Christian denominations with regard to the agreement now being formulated, told Ha'aretz that in bilateral agreements with Israel there is a clause defining what is meant by "Israel" from which a distinction clearly emerges between the two sides of the Green Line.The term "Israeli law" without any kind of codicil or restriction, is a dangerous precedent and implies recognition of the annexation of East Jerusalem and Israeli civil rule over areas of the West Bank (where a number of the sites on Schedule 1 are located), the lawyer was quoted as saying.A well informed source quoted by the daily rejected the interpretation saying that the agreement contains no geographical reference to any institution it mentions and there are no negotiations underway over the status of institutions in East Jerusalem.He said that the agreement recognises that "the Vatican has some obligations but [also] some immunities because of the special character of the Church and religion".A Foreign Ministry official, not familiar with the draft, said that the Vatican's position is clear and is known to the ministry and has not changed - "The Vatican does not recognise Israeli sovereignty beyond the Green Line".The secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Ekemeleddin Ihsanoglu, is said to have written a letter to Archbishop Dominque Mamberti, who is the secretary for relations with states of the Holy See.The archbishop reportedly answered in early May that "the eventual agreement will not represent a change in the position of the Holy See"."The Church, with particular attention to fiscal questions, is asking the State of Israel to treat her institutions in a fair manner, wherever the State of Israel exercised its authority de facto without taking into consideration or determining whether it does so as a sovereign state or as an occupying state, thus without entering into the political aspect of the question," Mamberti wrote.He said that the Church remains "extraneous to all merely temporal or political conflicts...Unless the contending parties or the international institutions make concordant appeal to its mission of peace".The response has only increased the concerns of local Christians denominations over what they see as erosion of the Church's position.A number of Palestinian Christians have complained that the Church and the spiritual authority of the Vatican should have taken into consideration the special situation of Christians under Israeli occupation, and it has not done so, the report said.As a state the Vatican is obligated to international law, and it did not take this into account in formulating the accord with Israel, they said.The draft to be discussed over the next few days has undergone changes since January 2012, but Palestinian sources believe that these changes are not dramatic. U.S. accuses Russia of sending attack helicopters to Syria, as nation descends into full-scale civil war

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration says Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime and is warning about a dramatic escalation in the Arab country’s 15-month conflict.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the delivery represents the “latest information.” She says the U.S. is concerned as the helicopters “will escalate the conflict quite dramatically.”
She is calling instead for Moscow to help the U.S. push forward a political transition plan for Syria. Clinton was speaking Tuesday at the Brookings Institution, a liberal-oriented research and policy organization.

Russia has consistently said it would not condone the use of outside forces to end the conflict and has said that it would not supply arms that would aid the government in quelling the uprising.
The UN peacekeeping chief said Tuesday the conflict in Syria has grown into a full-scale civil war in which the government is attempting to recapture large swathes of urban territory it has lost to the opposition.
“Yes, I think we can say that,” UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous said in an interview with Reuters and one other reporter when asked if the Syrian crisis could now be characterized as a civil war.
“Clearly what is happening is that the government of Syria lost some large chunks of territory in several cities to the opposition and wants to retake control of these areas,” he said.

UN observers trying to reach the besieged Syrian town of Al-Haffe said on Tuesday they were fired upon after being driven back by an angry crowd of people that hurled stones and metal rods at their vehicles.
The UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) said the crowd surrounded the vehicles of the observers and forced them to turn back.
“As they were leaving the area, three vehicles heading towards (northwest) Idlib were fired upon,” the statement said. “The source of fire is still unclear.”

It said all of the observers managed to return to their bases safely.
UNSMIS “has been trying to reach Al-Haffe since June 7 but has been impeded by the ongoing violence in the area,” the statement added, calling on “the parties to grant the UN observers immediate and unfettered access to conflict zones.”
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, said earlier that government forces were shelling Al-Haffe and nearby villages with dozens of people reportedly wounded, some of them critically.
At least 120 people have been killed in the fighting, including 68 troops, 29 civilians and 23 rebels, the Britain-based watchdog said.
The fighting is  making it impossible to respond to all humanitarian needs at once, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also said on Tuesday.

The ICRC, the only international agency to deploy aid workers in Syria, is trying to locate hundreds of people believed to have fled fighting in several areas of Homs for safer areas in the province, ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan told Reuters.
The UN on Monday released a report that includes Syrian government forces and their allied “shabiha” militias for the first time on a list of 52 governments and armed groups that recruit, kill or sexually attack children in armed conflicts.
In Syria, it said, children as young as 9 years old have been victims of killing and maiming, arbitrary arrest, detention, torture, and sexual violence, and have been used as human shields.
“In almost all recorded cases, children were among the victims of military operations by government forces, including the Syrian armed forces, the intelligence forces and the shabiha militia, in their ongoing conflict with the opposition, including the Free Syrian Army,” the report said.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s annual report on children and armed conflict during 2011 names 32 “persistent perpetrators” that have been on the list for at least five years, including the security forces of seven countries. That’s double the number in 2010, and Ban expressed grave concern at “the unacceptably high, and growing, number” of long-term abusers of children.
Radhika Coomaraswamy, the UN special representative for children and armed conflict, said that while new crises erupted in 2011 “with a heavy toll on children such as in Syria, and also in Libya, violations against girls and boys have come to an end in other parts of the world.”
But the so-called “list of shame” with 52 names – including four new parties in Syria, Yemen and Sudan – is still too long, she said in a statement.
A resolution adopted by the UN Security Council in 2005 took the first major step to prevent the victimization of young people in war zones by addressing the exploitation of children as combatants and identifying governments and armed groups that recruit child soldiers.
In 2009, the council voted to also name and shame countries and insurgent groups engaged in conflicts that lead to children being killed, maimed and raped.
The secretary-general said the United Nations has received reports of “grave violations” against children in Syria since March 2011, when protests against President Bashar Assad’s government began.
The report quoted a former member of the Syrian armed forces saying that in December, during protests in Tall Kalakh, his commander gave an order to shoot during the break-up of the demonstrations and he saw three girls, who appeared to be between 10 and 13 years old, killed. A former member of the intelligence forces was quoted as saying he witnessed the killing of five children in a secondary school during demonstrations in Aleppo in the last quarter of 2011.
The report said the Syrian military and the shabiha used children as young as 8 on at least three occasions last year.
In an attack on the village of Ayn l’Arouz in Idlib province on March 9, 2012, it quoted a witness as saying several dozen boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13 were forcibly taken from their homes and “used by soldiers and militia members as human shields, placing them in front of the windows of buses carrying military personnel into the raid on the village.”
The United Nations also has collected dozens of accounts of eyewitnesses from children as young as 14 years old who were tortured in detention, as well as from former members of the Syrian military who were forced to witness or carry out acts of torture, the report said.
Most child victims of torture described being beaten, blindfolded, subjected to stress positions, whipped with heavy electrical cables, scarred by cigarette burns and in one case subjected to electrical shock to the genitals, the report said. One witness reported seeing a boy about 15 years old die as a result of repeated beatings. Another 15-year-old repeatedly beaten with heavy electrical cables during interrogation reported at least 20 other children his age or younger being held in detention, it said.
