Jerusalem unveils mysterious Hebrew stone

JERUSALEM (AP) — An ancient stone with mysterious Hebrew writing and featuring the archangel Gabriel is going on display in Jerusalem as scholars debate the inscription's meaning.The so-called Gabriel Stone, said to have been found 13 years ago in Jordan, features an unknown prophetic text from the time of the Second Jewish Temple.The tablet made a splash in 2008 when an Israeli scholar theorized the inscription would revolutionize the understanding of early Christianity, claiming it referenced a messianic resurrection pre-dating Jesus.Curators at the Israel Museum said on Tuesday that it's the most important inscription found in the area since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.The Israel Museum exhibit, opening Wednesday, also features ancient New Testament and Quran texts referencing the archangel Gabriel.

Pope: Israel, PA Need to Make 'Courageous Decisions'

Pope Francis called on Tuesday for Israel and the Palestinian Authority to "resume negotiations" and "take courageous decisions", the Vatican said in a statement, after a meeting between the pontiff and Israeli president Shimon Peres."A speedy resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians is hoped for," it said, according to the AFP news agency."With the courageous decisions and availability of both sides, as well as support from the international community, an agreement may be reached," it added.Such an agreement should "respect the legitimate aspirations of the two peoples, thus decisively contributing to the peace and stability of the region."Peres and Francis expressed "worry for the conflict that plagues Syria" and hoped for a political solution to the crisis, the Vatican said.Peres also invited Pope Francis on an official state visit to Israel.

During the audience, which lasted 30 minutes, the president invited Francis to Jerusalem. “It’s not just me who would like to see you there, the whole of Israel would.” When the two shook hands at the beginning of the audience, Peres asked Bergoglio to pray “for all of us.” Before parting, the president assured the Pope he would pray for him: “When I go to Assisi tomorrow, I will pray for you.” After the audience, Peres met the Vatican Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone and the “minister of foreign affairs” Dominique Mamberti.A statement issued by the Holy See informs that “during the cordial talks, the political and social situation in the Middle East—where more than a few conflicts persist—was addressed. The process has been a long and confused one and always seems on the verge of being concluded, but as yet has not. During today’s audience, the President assured Francis that Israel was eager to reach an agreement on the Cenacle, which once belonged to the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. Israel could allow Christians to celebrate mass again in the place where according to the Christian tradition Jesus celebrated the Last Supper.Over the past few years, the Vatican and Israeli delegations have been working on a solution that involves ownership of the Cenacle, the two small rooms adjacent to it and the staircase providing access to it, be transferred to the Custody of the Holy Land. The Israeli state would maintain ownership of the convent that was built by the Franciscans (trying to ensure spaces are not given to new tenants other than the already existing ones) and the area surrounding the Tomb of David, beneath the Cenacle. This, however, may not be the final solution the Vatican has been hoping for. Peres’ words on the Cenacle and the possibility of allowing Christians celebrate mass there, seem to indicate this. Israel would grant the Pope special authority over the Cenacle, indicating that the ownership of one of the most important holy sites in Christianity will not be returned to the Christians.The Pope presented Peres with some medals and the Israeli president gave Franciscan copy of the Bible of Jerusalem, translated into Hebrew and English by the Dominican Ecole Biblique de Jerusalem. Peres included a handwritten note in the Bible, which read: “I hope you will prosper in everything that you do and wherever you go. With high esteem, Shimon Peres.” Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, said Pope Francis welcomed Peres’ invitation with great joy because Popes are always glad to visit the Holy Land. However, he also added that it is known yet known when he might visit. Bergoglio has already been invited to Jerusalem by Latin Patriarch, Fouad Twal and the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartolomew I, suggested a repeat of the historic embrace between Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras in Jerusalem in January 1964.

Israel negotiator welcomes Arab peace plan

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's chief peace negotiator is welcoming the Arab League's decision to sweeten a decade-old initiative offering comprehensive peace with Israel.The Arab League's original 2002 peace initiative offered regionwide peace with Israel in exchange for a withdrawal from all territories captured in the 1967 Mideast War to make way for an independent Palestinian state.Under Monday's decision, announced in Washington at talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the Arabs said they would accept small modifications to the 1967 lines, as long as they are agreed upon in talks with the Palestinians.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who opposes a pullback to the 1967 lines, had no immediate comment.

The Pope will be meeting Israeli president Shimon Peres tomorrow.“We are a Christian village called Beit Jala near the city of Bethlehem. We are threatened by the construction of the famous separation barrier which Israel's military occupation means to build by dispossessing most Christian Palestinian lands with the objective of separating Bethlehem and other areas from Jerusalem and other holy sites. Up until today Israel has confiscated two thirds of our lands,” the letter reads.The letter addressed to the Pope then goes on to explain that for over a year now, the Christian community “has been meeting every Friday in these lands to pray for a positive solution to this issue.” The confiscation, the letter said, “would dispossess 58 families of their land, and would take away the land of a nursery school managed by Salesian nuns and land owned by a convent of Salesian monks and its winemaking company for a total of 1200 hectares.”Italian news agency ANSA says the letter to the Pope – “which follows a recent ruling by an Israeli court allowing the continuation of construction of the separation barrier and the expropriation of land owned by the two Salesian convents in the Cremisan Valley - cites a decision of the International Court of Justice urging all member states not to recognize the situation resulting from the construction of the Israeli separation barrier in agreement with the 1949 Geneva Convention.”

A note published on the EU's Tenders Electronic Daily website on Saturday (27 April) says PPS will be paid €13.4 million plus VAT to do the work over the next four years.The fee is almost double what was foreseen in the original tender, published last July, which said the contract would be worth between €6 million and €8 million.The EU has 16 diplomatic staff and another 50 or so officials stationed in Jerusalem.Their activities in the West Bank are considered to be fairly low risk.But their occasional trips to Gaza, which hosts radical Islamist groups and which is prone to sudden eruptions of fighting with Israel, are more dangerous.One EU diplomat recalled that his first-ever visit to the Gaza strip coincided with an Israeli air strike."Within hours of arriving, I found myself in a car holding a wounded man with blood everywhere. I had to ask myself the question there and then: am I really cut out for this?" he told this website.Just two other security companies put in bids for the Gaza/West bank tender.The European External Action Service (EEAS) said on Monday it was not ready to give an immediate comment on the PPS award.But its decision caused surprise in the private security sector, given PPS' poor track record on EU contracts in Afghanistan and in Gaza/West Bank itself.PPS has been guarding EU diplomats in Afghanistan since 2008 and did Gaza/West Bank between 2005 and 2010.In Afghanistan, it failed to supply the right body armour and rifles to its guards for more than one year after the contract began.It also failed to supply proof of work done for around €1 million worth of invoices and paid a €300,000 penalty in lieu of the full amount.It was awarded a new contract for Afghanistan earlier this year, but then the EEAS changed its mind, saying PPS was non-compliant with the "necessary conditions."In its past work in Gaza/West Bank, EU diplomats said its drivers did not know their way around Gaza and that they abused local Palestinian staff.They also questioned its attempts to avoid paying social security contributions to Israel on the grounds that its Palestinian guards did not recognise Israeli sovereignty.The then EU envoy to Jerusalem, Christian Berger, wrote in an internal letter in 2009 that he was "very concerned about their [PPS] actual performance" and that the firm's behaviour "has led to reputational damage for the commission," referring to the European Commission, which managed foreign delegations before the EEAS was created.Berger repeated his criticism in 2010.The EU's anti-fraud office, Olaf, in January this year also drafted a critical report on PPS' work in Afghanistan. Habermas urges more 'cooperation' between EU states

For unknown reasons, Israeli authorities are keeping lid on an archaeological find that may turn out to be a royal castle from David's time, reports Makor Rishon newspaper. The newspaper did not give any details that might identify the exact location of the find.According to the paper, the site was identified by Binyamin Tropper, of the Kfar Etzion Field School. As he descended into a cave in the area of southern Jerusalem, he identified what professionals know as "a proto-aeolic capital" connected to a column.The capital – which is the decorated stone at the head of an ancient column – dates back to the Biblical era, according to Field School Director Yaron Rosental. Only 30 such capitals have been found in Israel so far, and only five of them were found in areas in which Biblical-era kings lived.Unlike all of the other proto-aeolic capitals found in Israel – this one is not separate from the column but connected to it. The weight of the column and capital are estimated to be about five tons."For reasons that are not completely clear," the newspaper writes, "several authorities in Israel have decided to silence the find, which may mark a breakthrough in the perception of the period of King David and his son, Shlomo [Solomon], and of the entire Judean kingdom."
The capital "apparently indicates that an entire temple of castle is buried beneath it," the newspaper adds. However, when Rosental contacted the Israel Antiquities Authority to inform them of the find, the person he spoke to simply said – "Yaron, good for you. You found it, but we already are aware of it. Now forget about the whole thing and keep your mouth shut."Rosental said that he later found out that the IAA had known about the side for 18 months. He said that no digging has taken place since then, and that even steps like cordoning off the area to prevent damage to the rare find, have not been taken.Rosental calls this "a scandal" but says that no less worrisome is that the state appears to have plans to move the separation fence between Israel and the PA in a way that will leave the site in the PA's hands. However, there is still time to alter the route of the fence by 100 yards and leave the cave in Israeli hands. He expressed the wish that the authorities cordon off the site and keep it in Israeli hands until it has been thoroughly excavated, whereas he would not mind Palestinian Arabs running the site later on and profitting from the fees charged to visit it.
According to Rosental, excavation of the site has potential for uncovering a complete castle and possibly an entire neighborhood from the Judean kings' period, for the first time ever. "We appear to have a complete castle here," he said. "Those who lived here after it did not know of its existence and thus, instead of using its stones to build a new building as was the usual practice, left it intact." The details found inside could be "amazing."The IAA confirmed to Makor Rishon that the find is an important one that appears to date to the period of Judean kings. However, the IAA added, the subject is "sensitive" and "requires serious and responsible handing." They added that they hope to be able to explore the findings.The IDF said that it offered the IAA "the full assistance needed" in order to remove the capital and column from the site.

(AP) — For just a few minutes, it seemed as if the dragnet that had shut down a metropolitan area of millions while legions of police went house to house looking for the suspected Boston Marathon bomber had failed.Weary officials lifted a daylong order that had kept residents in their homes, saying it was fruitless to keep an entire city locked down. Then one man emerged from his home and noticed blood on the pleasure boat parked in his backyard. He lifted the tarp and found the wounded 19-year-old college student known the world over as Suspect No. 2.Soon after that, the 24-hour drama that paralyzed a city and transfixed a nation was over.Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's capture touched off raucous celebrations in and around Boston, with chants of "USA, USA" as residents flooded the streets in relief and jubilation after four tense days since twin explosions ripped through the marathon's crowd at the finish line, killing three people and wounding more than 180.The 19-year-old — whose older brother and alleged accomplice was killed earlier Friday morning in a wild shootout in suburban Boston — was in serious condition Saturday at a hospital protected by armed guards, and he was unable to be questioned to determine his motives. U.S. officials said a special interrogation team for high-value suspects would question him without reading him his Miranda rights, invoking a rare public safety exception triggered by the need to protect police and the public from immediate danger.President Barack Obama said there are many unanswered questions about the Boston bombings, including whether the two men had help from others. He urged people not to rush judgment about their motivations.Dzhokhar and his brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, were identified by authorities and relatives as ethnic Chechens from southern Russia who had been in the U.S. for about a decade and were believed to be living in Cambridge, just outside Boston. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died early in the day of gunshot wounds and a possible blast injury. A neighbor described how heavily armed police stormed by her window not long after the lockdown was lifted — the rapid gunfire left her huddled on the bathroom floor on top of her young son."I was just waiting for bullets to just start flying everywhere," Deanna Finn said.When at last the gunfire died away and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was taken from the neighborhood in an ambulance, an officer gave Finn a cheery thumbs-up."To see the look on his face, he was very, very happy, so that made me very, very happy," she said.Authorities said the man dubbed Suspect No. 1 — the one in sunglasses and a dark baseball cap in the surveillance-camera pictures — was Tamerlan Tsarnaev, while Suspect No. 2, the one in a white baseball cap worn backward, was his younger brother.Chechnya, where the brothers grew up, has been the scene of two wars between Russian forces and separatists since 1994, in which tens of thousands were killed in heavy Russian bombing. That spawned an Islamic insurgency that has carried out deadly bombings in Russia and the region, although not in the West.The older brother had strong political views about the United States, said Albrecht Ammon, 18, a downstairs-apartment neighbor in Cambridge. Ammon quoted Tsarnaev as saying that the U.S. uses the Bible as "an excuse for invading other countries."Also, the FBI interviewed the older brother at the request of a foreign government in 2011, and nothing derogatory was found, according to a federal law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.The official did not identify the foreign country or say why it made the request.Exactly how the long night of crime began was unclear. But police said the brothers carjacked a man in a Mercedes-Benz in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston, then released him unharmed at a gas station.They also shot to death a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer, 26-year-old Sean Collier, while he was responding to a report of a disturbance, investigators said.The search for the Mercedes led to a chase that ended in Watertown, where authorities said the suspects threw explosive devices from the car and exchanged gunfire with police. "I want to know answers. That's the most important thing. And I think I speak for almost all America. Why the Boston Marathon? Why this year? Survivor still believes in Koresh 20 years after Waco inferno

WACO, Texas (Reuters) - Clive Doyle is still a staunch Branch Davidian loyal to the teachings of David Koresh, whose tiny church outside Waco, Texas, was destroyed in a deadly inferno at the end of a standoff with federal agents 20 years ago.Doyle was one of the lucky followers of Koresh who escaped from the carnage that shocked the nation. The 20th anniversary of the tragedy falls in a week when Americans are reeling from a deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon, and an explosion at a fertilizer plant just 20 miles (32 miles) from Waco.Authorities have said there is no indication of foul play in the explosion at the fertilizer plant."I still believe in David Koresh, and I still believe in most everything he taught," Doyle, 72, and still living in Waco, said in a telephone interview.Doyle was among former followers of self-styled prophet Koresh and many visitors who attended a public memorial service on Friday remembering the deaths of the dozens of men, women and children killed two decades ago.Baylor University, a Baptist university in Waco, hosted an academic symposium on Thursday called "Reflecting on an American Tragedy."The siege on the ranch known as "Mount Carmel Center" started with a failed attempt to execute a search warrant for illegal firearms on February 28, 1993, by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which enforces U.S. gun laws.The federal government agency attempted to serve the warrant on the group of Christian followers of Koresh estimated to number more than 100. Known as Vernon Howell before he took the name David Koresh, he went to the prairie in central Texas in the early 1980s along with the breakaway Seventh Day Adventist sect established in the 1950s.Koresh, a self-styled modern prophet or "Lamb of God," prophesied the second coming of Jesus Christ, a cornerstone of Adventist beliefs.The sect resisted the government warrant, and the gunbattle that followed killed four federal agents and six members of the church.
51-DAY STANDOFF
For the next 51 days, a dramatic standoff played out on television and in news headlines across the world. Audiences watched live as sect followers unfurled sheets scrawled with defiant messages and federal agents held news conferences condemning them.On April 19, 1993, federal agents raided the chapel, using tanks and teargas. The sect followers fought back and a huge blaze erupted, destroying the building.Doyle escaped but his teenage daughter died in the fire. At the end of siege, investigators found 76 sect members dead - 18 of whom were later determined to have been killed by gunshots. Koresh, 33 at the time, was found with a gunshot to his forehead.In all, 82 sect members, including 23 children, and four federal agents died at Waco.
The official stand of the U.S. government remains that Koresh was a danger and needed to be taken down.
"Responsibility for the tragedy at Waco rests with certain of the Branch Davidians and their leader, David Koresh, who shot and killed four (federal) agents, wounded 20 others, shot at FBI agents trying to insert tear gas into the complex, burned down the complex and shot at least 20 of their own people, including five children," said the final report of a special counsel investigating the tragedy.The stunning event touched off resentment toward government power. Many people believe there was a government cover-up. They are still writing books, making movies and commenting on the saga."What I fear is those kinds of events are going to be repeated, because people are (angry) and they are going to resist all of this Obama gun control craziness, and they'll resist in different ways," said filmmaker Mike McNulty, referring to President Barack Obama's gun control proposals.McNulty's "Waco: Rules of Engagement" documentary, along with follow-ups "A New Revelation" and "The FLIR Project," became a touchstone for critics of the government's actions.The symposium and the endless media interviews Doyle has done in the months leading up to the anniversary are a way to keep the event in the public mind, Doyle said.Doyle still holds Bible study with some survivors on Saturdays, and has become the unofficial spokesman of the group. He wrote a book about his life, released in September 2012, called "A Journey to Waco: Autobiography of a Branch Davidian."He hopes to be an inspiration for a new generation, who were not born yet when the siege happened, to question authority.

One Boston bombing suspect dead, hunt on for second man

WATERTOWN, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Police on Friday killed one suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing during a shootout and mounted a house-to-house search for a second man in the suburb of Watertown after a bloody night of shooting and explosions in the city's streets.A national security official identified the hunted man as Dzhokar A. Tsarnaev, 19, and said the dead suspect was his brother, Tamerlan Tsarneav, 26. The brothers had been in the United States for several years, the official said.Authorities locked down much of Watertown and told residents not to leave their homes and not to answer the door as they scoured the area for the missing man, who was described as armed and dangerous. Public transportation throughout the Boston metropolitan area was suspended, and air space was restricted.
During the night a university police officer was killed, a transit police officer was wounded, and the suspects carjacked a vehicle before leading police on a chase that ended with one suspect shot dead.Police were searching for the man known as Suspect 2 who was shown wearing a white cap in surveillance pictures taken shortly before Monday's explosions and released by the FBI on Thursday. Suspect 1, the man wearing a dark cap and sunglasses in the same images, was dead, officials said."We believe this to be a terrorist," said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis of the suspect still at large. The FBI has attempted to blacklist photos which show men working for a private military organization wearing heavy backpacks and appearing to take part in a drill at the Boston Marathon, instead focusing on two other individuals while proclaiming, “other photos will not be deemed credible.”As Infowars has documented over the last two days, photos taken from the scene of the blast show numerous individuals wearing identical clothing while carrying heavy black backpacks, talking into cellphones and in one case placing one of the backpacks on the ground.Infowars reporter Dan Bidondi was at the FBI press conference and attempted to get questions answered about bomb drills that eyewitnesses said were taking place on the morning of the marathon, but was ignored and subsequently confronted by two large men at the end of the conference.In not only ignoring but aggressively attempting to discredit the photos showing men who are likely employees of the private security firm Craft International on the scene of the bombings engaged in some kind of drill, the FBI has signaled its intention to continue the cover-up of what really happened.

Symbolism and meaning on Israel’s Independence Day

In Israel, during the weeks before Independence Day flags come out of boxes, draped from their balconies and stuck on cars. Large office buildings display banners 30 floors high and light displays even larger. When you’re in Israel, it’s hard to escape the excitement of Independence Day!

So why blue and white?
The blue of the flag originates in biblical times. During these times, tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl, had blue dye in it. In fact, God spoke to Moses and advised him:‘Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generation fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue.And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye used to go astray; that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God.’ (NUM 15:38-40).
Over time as the Israelites spread throughout the world, this commandment was difficult, if not impossible to keep because no dye was available. Some people wove blue or purple into their tallit in an attempt to remember this request. Even today, many tallits on the market still have blue and purple stripes.
The blue stripes in the flag of Israel are a modern interpretation of the tallit, to remind this generation and the generations to come to keep the commandments. The blue and white is fitting for a flag, fitting for Judaica, fitting for tallit, but it doesn’t quite stand alone as a symbol. Enter the Star of David…

What is the origin of the Jewish Star?
The Star of David (or Jewish Star) has evolved into a symbol of Judaism, chosen by the Jewish people to represent themselves. There is no real historical basis for this choice and no mention in any books or scholarly theories that are proven to show any deep meaning in ancient times. In fact, biblically it was the burning bush that represented the people of Israel.‘And the angel of the LORD appeared until him in a flame of fiber out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.’ (Exodus 3:2).Like the bush that would not burn, the people of Israel could not be consumed by those who seek to destroy them. But a burning bush doesn’t make a compelling symbol any more than a color. Starting in the 17^th century, the Jewish Star became the prominent symbol of Judaism.
A symbol is only as relevant as the meaning we ascribe to it – so as Jews and gentiles began to identify with the Star of David as a symbol of Judaism, it truly became to represent the Jewish people. And so it remains until today.

Same Star, Different Meaning
For those who want to destroy Israel, the star is a symbol of apartheid, oppression and war crimes. It’s used in cartoons under the guise of criticizing Israel, when in fact what it is doing is promoting anti-Semitism. So-called humanitarians burn the Israeli flag and carry signs where the Jewish Star is equated with the Nazi symbol. We’ll never forget the yellow stars of the Holocaust – the true symbol of genocide.
For the Jewish people and those who support them, this star is a source of pride, not hate.

So what does it really mean?
The true meaning of the Star of David is personal. Rabbi Shraga Simmons says that the six points of the stars represents God’s rule of all directions. He supports this claim with the fact that the star is called “Magen David” which means Shield of David. And since it was not the physical Shield of David that won his fights, but his help from God, the star represents God’s help. Simmons supports this again with the third blessing after the Haftorah, which states, “Blessed are you God, Shield of David.” However, he admits that there are other ideas:

The Kabbalah version of the Yin-Yang, representing the dichotomies of man, e.g. good vs. evil.
The 12 tribes of Israel.
The relationship between the Jewish people and God; we pray up as God projects down.
Technology developed in the 1^st century Bar Kochba rebellion whereby shields were fashioned into a hexagon, formed by two triangles.
The conflicts among the Jewish people.

Why wear a Jewish Star?
Some people show their feelings about Israel by flying the Israeli flag high. Others might share news stories & images on Facebook. For those who choose to wear the Jewish Star, it’s just another way to connect personally to whatever feelings they have.People have individualistic interpretations of the Jewish Star. As a result, there are as many manifestations of the wearable Star of David as there are feelings about the symbol itself. The Star of David is a common charm on red Kabbalah bracelets. It adorns jewelry together with traditional blessings and prayers; it’s also not unusual to find modern art versions. One version consists of a dove and a triangle, called the “David Dove.” You can even find the Star of David entwined in a dream catcher or woven in gold around a crystal.

The importance of symbols
Symbols are an important part of how people express themselves. It’s one way we can show ourselves to others, but also remind ourselves of our own beliefs. Whether you choose to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day by flying a flag, sharing an inspirational e-mail with friends & family, joining activities in the Jewish community or just praying, the important thing is that you stay true to yourself.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who usually steers clear of passionate rhetoric, called terrorists "subhuman" at the Har Herzl ceremony marking Memorial Day for the IDF's Fallen Soldiers.His speech focused on the victims of terror – starting with Adelle Biton, the baby who is fighting for her life after an Arab rock ambush in Samaria."The rock terror joins the terror of fire bombs, the shootings and the rest of the terror attacks," Netanyahu said. "All of these have felled 2,500 victims."The terrorists want to us away from our land, he said, and all means are acceptable, in their eyes. "The murderers do not shy away from butchering babies and old people, or innocent bystanders. We will never be like them."Terror is not a pestilence from heaven," he said. "It is the work of humans. Usually, of subhumans. We will defeat them."
"There are supposed men of morals who preach to us, day and night," he added. "But I notice that they are not always quick to denounce our enemies when they spill the blood of innocents."
