The missile is expected to enter service in 2020.The Sarmat could deliver up to 10 heavy nuclear warheads or 15 medium warheads at targets up to 6,200 miles away, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative. Reuters/Gleb Garanich.Russia’s Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile is set for a drop test this year and a test launch within a year and a half of the drop test, Russian defense sources told ITAR-TASS on Thursday. The new missile is set to replace the Cold-War era R-36 missile, nicknamed “SS-18 Satan” by NATO, which is still the world’s largest intercontinental ballistic missile ever made.Russian technicians will conduct a “drop test” at some point this year to measure the missile’s lift and proper evolution through its launch stages before they conduct a full test launch, provided the missile performs. The missile is expected to enter service in 2020.The Sarmat could deliver up to 10 heavy nuclear warheads or 15 medium warheads at targets up to 6,200 miles away, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative. The missile would carry the warheads into suborbital flight, at which point they would separate and hit independent targets. It can reportedly “flying over the North and South Poles” and “would be capable of overcoming almost any missile defense system,” according to Pravda.While the U.S. and Russia made strides in nuclear missile reductions following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the major treaties signed like the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons do not prevent nuclear states from replacing or upgrading their arsenals. START set a total limit for the number of warheads each state can have and the NPT forbids states from spreading weapons technologies to other, non- recognized nuclear states.The U.S. has plans to keep their Minuteman III ballistic missiles in service through 2030 with a series of upgrades, but the Air Force has voiced it wants to develop a new system. Both the Sarmat and its Satan predecessor are more powerful than the Minuteman. The Air Force has awarded contractors upward of $50 million to develop new guidance systems and other upgrades to the Minuteman III, according to the Great Falls Tribune.Earlier this week, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Ragozin claimed that the U.S. could not defend against Russia’s nuclear arsenal, although he did not specify what missile technology he was referring to.

The Latvian Army said on Friday that NATO’s Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian Ilyushin Il-38 plane, a maritime patrol aircraft, over the Baltic Sea. A similar incident occurred on Tuesday when the Latvian military had to launch NATO Typhoon jests to escort a Russian Il-76 military transport plane, which was flying in neutral airspace, RIA Novosti reported.“NATO Baltic Air Policing QRA ITA Typhoon jets on 6 FEB scrambled to intercept RU Armed Forces Il-38 over the Baltic Sea,” the Latvian Army tweeted on Friday.Although there was no indication that the Russian planes breached the Latvian airspace, NATO has accused Moscow over the past few months of stepping up military activities in the Baltic region. Two Russian Bear long-range bombers that were seen flying near Britain's southern coast on Wednesday were intercepted by Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets, Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced Thursday.The Russian planes, capable of carrying nuclear missiles, were spotted as they flew south of Bournemouth on Wednesday. The planes' suspicious movements prompted Britain to launch its Typhoons from the RAF bases at Lossiemouth in Scotland and Coningsby in eastern England, the MoD said.“The Russian planes were escorted by the RAF until they were out of the UK area of interest. At no time did the Russian military aircraft cross into UK sovereign airspace,” the MoD said in a statement, obtained by Reuters.However, Moscow claimed Thursday that the flight of the Russian strategic bombers near British airspace did not breach international regulations.“Two [Tupolev] Tu-95MS [Bear] strategic bombers… successfully completed the planned air patrols,” a Russian Air Force spokesman told RIA Novosti. “The flight route passed through neutral waters near the Barents and Norwegian Seas, [as well as] the Atlantic Ocean. The flight duration was over 19 hours.”According to Elizabeth Quintana, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a defense think tank, the Russian bombers did not breach British airspace, but they did deviate from their standard route.“Normally Russian Bears come past Norway and down the North Sea. It could have been used to probe the RAF speed of reaction south,” Daily Mail quoted Quintana as saying. “Flying any military aircraft in or close to the sovereign airspace of another country signals displeasure or at worst aggression.”In 2014, there were more than 100 intercepts of Russian aircraft -- three times as many as in 2013 -- by NATO, which is concerned about Moscow’s increased air patrols near its borders.
