GENESIS 12:1-3
1  Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I (GOD) will shew thee:
2  And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3  And I will bless them that bless thee,(ISRAELIS) and curse (DESTROY) him that curseth thee:(DESTROY THEM) and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

LUKEWARM CHURCHES

REVELATION 3:15-19
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I(GOD) will spue (VOMIT) thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

IFCJ Leader Yechiel Eckstein: God Honors Churches Which Support Israel While Methodist Churches Sit Empty-By Abra Forman January 14, 2016 , 10:30 am-BREAKINGISRAELNEWS

“I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.” (Numbers 24:10)-The International Fellowship of Jews and Christians (IFCJ) has harshly condemned the United Methodist Church’s recent decision to divest from five Israeli banks, warning that churches which do not support Israel will ultimately suffer from decreased membership and affiliation.IFCJ founder Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein said in a statement responding to the decision, “God is clearly honoring the churches that stand with Israel and the Jewish people by bringing about huge growth with them, and at the same time Methodist churches are sitting empty and their affiliation is way down.”He said that the United Method Church (UMC) pension board’s blacklisting of five Israeli banks on the grounds that they enable abuse of human rights would only garner more conflict and strife in the region.“Boycotting divides people and stirs deeper hatred for Israel and the Jewish people, rather than encouraging peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” he stated. He emphasized the Fellowship’s appreciation for the millions of Christians who have “faithfully stood shoulder to shoulder with Israel and the Jewish people, despite cynical and hate-filled attempts to demonize Israel” in recent years.NGO Monitor also made a statement blasting the decision and pointing a finger at the non-governmental organizations which attempt to delegitimize Israel under the guise of human rights. This group of “radical and anti-peace NGOs” runs campaigns calling for boycotts and divestments from Israel, said the statement. The organization called the United Methodist Church’s decision immoral and damaging to the possibility of peace between Israel and the Palestinians. “Isolating Israel and damaging the prospect of peace are entirely inconsistent with universal values and morality,” said Professor Gerald Steinberg of NGO Monitor.-NO to BDS and YES to Israel!-He argued that the decision was based in a desire to hurt Israel rather than help Palestinians. “By adopting this resolution, the UMC handed a victory to anti-Israel extremists who are more interested in causing harm to the Jewish state than to improve the lives of Palestinians and Israelis,” he charged. These extremists are represented by a group of NGOs which work against Israel, NGO Monitor said. At the forefront of this campaign is an NGO called “Who Profits”, which is funded by a number of European donors, including several church groups and the government of Spain.Another pro-BDS and anti-peace NGO which promotes “economic warfare” against Israel is Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), which praised the United Methodist Church decision and boasts a partnership with the United Methodist Kairos Response, a major BDS proponent within the Methodist church, said the NGO Monitor statement. These organizations are part of a larger network of about 1,500 NGOs which, at a 2001 UN conference, formed a strategy aimed at delegitimizing Israel as an “apartheid regime” by calling for the imposition of sanctions and embargoes and the “full cessation of all links (diplomatic, economic, social, aid, military cooperation and training) between all states and Israel.Steinberg called the strategy of using churches to advance the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) agenda “cynical”, adding that it “takes advantage of the perception of the church as a source of good and morality.”“Tuesday’s decision by the UMC reflects the destructive power of the NGO network that exploits human rights for hate, and undermining the chances for peace and reconciliation,” he said.

Israeli PM Pushing for Liberal Jewish Prayer at Holy Site-By The Associated Press-JERUSALEM — Jan 31, 2016, 5:01 AM ET-YAHOONEWS

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is advancing a plan to allow non-Orthodox Jewish prayer at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. If Israel's Cabinet approves the plan in a vote expected on Sunday, advocates say it would mark unprecedented government support for liberal streams of Judaism.According to the proposal, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, the government would build a plaza for mixed gender prayer at the Western Wall, the holiest site at which Jews are allowed to pray. The site is currently divided by gender. For years, a liberal Jewish women's group has angered ultra-Orthodox Jews by holding prayers that do not follow Orthodox religious restrictions on women. The matter has sparked great interest in the U.S., where the liberal Jewish movements are dominant.

Israel would consider invitation to peace talks with Palestinians: spokesman-Reuters By Ori Lewis-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel would consider a French invitation to peace talks with the Palestinians, but believes France has made a mistake by saying it will recognize a Palestinian state if the talks fail, an Israeli government official said on Saturday."If and when we get an invitation to a conference, we will examine it and respond to it," the official, who declined to be named, said in a statement.French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told foreign diplomats on Friday that if the conference he proposes hit a wall, "well ... in this case, we need to face our responsibilities by recognizing the Palestinian state".The Israeli official dismissed the idea, saying: "Why would the Palestinians budge on even a comma in a conference if they already know that, without making progress, they will get what they want?"Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, speaking to African leaders at a summit in Ethiopia, urged them to back France's conference plan. But two Israeli cabinet ministers, both allies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Israel should boycott such a meeting."Unequivocally, Israel will not attend a conference under threat," Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz told Channel 2 television, echoing a comment by Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz to Channel 1.-PEACE EFFORTS STALLED-U.S.-led efforts to broker a "two-state solution" collapsed in 2014, and there has been no serious attempt to revive them.Fabius has previously called for an international support group comprising Arab states, the European Union and U.N. But Netanyahu has called France's initiatives "counterproductive".A U.S. official responded cautiously to Fabius's statement."The U.S. position on this issue has been clear. We continue to believe that the preferred path to resolve this conflict is for the parties to reach an agreement on final status issues directly," the official said.Despite anger in the U.S. administration over Israeli settlement building, there is little prospect of President Barack Obama supporting any initiative that could upset the U.S. Jewish lobby 10 months before an election.U.N. France to recognise Palestinian state unless deadlock with Israel broken-PARIS | By John Irish-JAN 30,16-YAHOONEWS-REUTERS

France will recognise a Palestinian state if a final push that Paris plans to lead for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians fails, its foreign minister said on Friday.U.S.-led efforts to broker peace for a two-state solution collapsed in April 2014 and since then there have been no serious efforts to resume talks.Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has repeatedly warned that letting the status quo continue risks killing off a two-state solution and playing into the hands of Islamic State militants.Last year he failed in efforts to get the United States on board to push for a U.N. Security Council resolution to set parameters for talks between the two sides and set a final deadline for a deal. The expansions of settlements by Israel since then have been described by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as "provocative acts" that raise questions about its commitment to a two-state solution."We cannot let the two-state solution disintegrate. It is our responsibility as a U.N. Security Council member and a power seeking peace," Fabius told an annual gathering of foreign diplomats.Fabius has previously called for an international support group comprising Arab states, the European Union and U.N. Security Council members that would essentially force the two sides to compromise. He said Paris would begin preparing in the "coming weeks" an international conference bringing together the parties and their main partners, American, European and Arab.If this last attempt at finding a solution hits a wall, "well ... in this case, we need to face our responsibilities by recognising the Palestinian state", he said.A French diplomatic source said the aim was to launch the conference before the summer and that it would not be accompanied by a U.N. Security Council resolution, which would inevitably fail.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously criticised recent French initiatives, calling them "counter-productive".Despite anger in the U.S. administration over Israeli settlements, there is little prospect of U.S. President Barack Obama supporting any initiative that could upset the U.S. Jewish lobby 10 months before an election.A U.S. official responded cautiously to Fabius' statement."The U.S. position on this issue has been clear. We continue to believe that the preferred path to resolve this conflict is for the parties to reach an agreement on final status issues directly," the official said.Nabil Abu Rdainah, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said he welcomed the move."There is no doubt that a French recognition of the Palestinian state will contribute to building peace and stability in the region," he said.An Israeli official, who declined to be identified, said:"The foreign minister of France says up front that if his initiative reaches a dead end, France will recognise a Palestinian state. This statement constitutes an incentive for the Palestinians to bring about a dead end. Negotiations cannot be held nor peace achieved in this manner."Palestine has non-member observer status at the United Nations and its flag flies with those of member states at UN headquarters in New York. Sweden became the first EU member nation to recognise the Palestinian state in 2014 and has been followed by several others.Palestinians seek a state in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, parts of which have been occupied by Israel since a 1967 war. Palestinians mull new bid for UN resolution on settlements-‘We have to open some doors to keep the hope alive and keep the two-state solution alive,’ says PA envoy-By AFP January 29, 2016, 8:41 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

UNITED NATIONS — Palestinian officials are waging a new campaign at the United Nations to revive peace prospects, with the starting point possibly a Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements, the Palestinian envoy to the world body said Friday.“We will not accept that the year 2016 is a year when we cannot do anything,” Ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters.“We have to open some doors to keep the hope alive and keep the two-state solution alive.”He rejected the suggestion that prospects for progress were slim because of the US election campaign, which could make Washington more reluctant to put pressure on Israel to compromise.Mansour said the success of the Iran nuclear deal and progress on the Syrian peace track highlighted the need for a “collective approach” to solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The ongoing violence on the ground is likely to worsen if nothing is done, he said, adding that the situation in August and September will be “much, much worse than what we see now.”A wave of Palestinian knife, gun and car-ramming attacks since October 1 has killed at least 25 Israelis.Over the same period, 159 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, most while carrying out terror attacks and others during clashes and demonstrations.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas recently told Israeli reporters that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu snubbed appeals for a summit between the two leaders. The Palestinian ambassador recently met with the envoys from the permanent Security Council members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — to discuss the way forward.Mansour declined to give details of the talks, including whether the United States, which as Israel’s ally has blocked UN action, was open to a Security Council role in reviving the peace process. The Palestinian envoy suggested that a resolution condemning Israel’s expansion of Israeli settlements could be a first step, but he stressed that there should be a broader plan. This could include the creation of an international support group, the deployment of observers to trouble spots or the convening of an international peace conference.“The signal has to come from the Security Council,” he said. The United States used its veto in 2011 to block a UN resolution condemning Israeli settlements, and it has rejected a UN role in the peace process. The council has not adopted a resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process since 2009.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Spain ‘deeply worried’ over Palestinian deaths by Israel-Foreign ministry also slams ‘terror attacks’ on settlers; pro-Israel lobby accuses Madrid of equivalence between aggressor and victim-By JTA January 29, 2016, 7:59 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Spain’s government this week expressed “deep concern at the loss of many dozens of lives” of Palestinians as a result of Israel’s “use of force” in response to attacks against its citizens. The statement Tuesday by the Spanish foreign ministry also said that Palestinian murders of Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Palestinian attacks on other Israelis are “terrorist attacks” and “hate crimes.”However, pro-Israel activists lambasted the ministry for the statement, which the ACOM lobby group condemned Thursday as “infamous” and creating a false moral equivalence between aggressor and victim. The Spanish ministry’s statement was in reaction to the killing of Dafna Meir, a mother of six, on Jan. 17 at her home in the West Bank settlement of Otniel, and two other attacks that occurred thereafter in settlements, the statement said. But, in addition to condemning those attacks, the statement read: “The government is also deeply worried about the loss of many dozens of human lives among the Palestinian population as a consequence of the use of force by agents of Israeli authorities in reaction to the attacks and calls on all parties to abandon all acts of violence or instigation thereof, as those can exacerbate the situation.”The statement added: “It is necessary to break this cycle of violence.”But to ACOM, the statement suggests that the ministry “explains that the Palestinians kill as a logical result of the use of force” by Israelis, noting that many of the Palestinians killed in recent weeks were shot while trying to kill Israelis.“The ministry apparently considers attacks against Jewish girls in supermarkets and others comparable to shooting the terrorists that perpetrate them,” the organization wrote in a statement Thursday.Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of justifying Palestinian terrorism for saying that, “As oppressed peoples have demonstrated throughout the ages, it is human nature to react to occupation, which often serves as a potent incubator of hate and extremism.”Ban later vehemently rejected the accusation, and doubled down on his remarks.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report

Islamist terror group has more than 1,000 people working around the clock, six days a week, to dig attack tunnels into Israel-Gaza prepares for war-As it rebuilds its attack tunnels, Hamas vows it will operate ‘inside the territory of 1948’ in the next round of fighting with Israel By Avi Issacharoff January 29, 2016, 4:06 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

After quite a few attempts at concealment and denial, Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, on Thursday released the names of “the seven heroes, men of Allah” who were killed earlier in the week in the collapse of an attack tunnel in the Tufah neighborhood in the northeastern part of Gaza City, only a few hundred yards from the Israeli border. At first, Hamas leaders tried to hide the fact that any of its members had been killed in the tunnel. Then they claimed that the men were merely missing. Finally, they released the names of seven of the 11 excavators who were there at the time of the collapse.Hamas’s statement read in part: “We trod the path of death for your lives’ sake.”Several days earlier, Faiz Abu Smala, a journalist with close ties to Hamas, wrote on his Facebook page about a meeting with the local commander of Hamas’s military wing: “He admitted to me that they were still working night and day, around the clock, and that the battle they faced would be a matter of the utmost importance, of life and death, and that they had no alternative but to work under all conditions.”The seven Hamas operatives who were killed were not the first victims Hamas’s tunnels have claimed during their post-2014-war construction and reconstruction. Last month, one of Gilad Shalit’s captors was killed inside a tunnel that collapsed near Khan Yunis. According to sources in Gaza, 12 other Hamas operatives were killed in tunnel collapses last year.According to the commander, Hamas has already restocked its rocket supply and is ready for a new war. He also said that in the next round of fighting, Hamas would operate “inside the territory of 1948.” This was a broad hint that Hamas plans to engage in terror attacks inside Israel using, among other means, its new and restored cross-border tunnels. Some might say that these are empty threats of the kind that Hamas makes every so often. But a close look at what is happening right now in the Gaza Strip gives the opposite impression: 18 months after the last war, someone in Gaza is preparing the ground on the public level, and making preparations below ground on the military level, for large-scale escalation leading to another conflict with Israel. The question is when and under what circumstances. The numbers throw into sharp relief Hamas’s determination to rehabilitate its tunnel project, which was badly damaged during Operation Protective Edge: Hamas has more than 1,000 people working around the clock, six days a week, to dig more and more attack tunnels under the border and into Israel. The inclement weather has not slowed the pace of the work, as the incident in Tufah demonstrates. This is because the tunnel project is deemed central, since Hamas believes it can use the tunnels (among other weapons) to carry out an “opening strike” that will give the impression of victory in any future round of fighting with Israel. There are a few tunnels estimated to be crossing into Israel, but there may be more. Hamas is using concrete to line the tunnel walls, as it did in the past, and has sufficient access to such materials. These tunnels are not the antiquated ones that were built along the Philadelphi Route at the beginning of the past decade; those were dug by amateurs at a medium depth of 7-8 meters. These new tunnels are being dug 30 meters deep, with sophisticated engineering equipment and more advanced technological support, including engineers’ blueprints.Hamas probably does not want an escalation or another round of war at this time, as former Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniyeh hinted in his latest speech. But not everyone in Hamas hangs on to Haniyeh’s every word. For the military wing, it is crucial to restore Hamas’s image, which took a serious hit in the last war. That is why an “opening strike” is almost obligatory, certainly in light of the state of affairs in the Gaza Strip, where Hamas’s popularity is steadily dropping because of the economic situation, among other reasons.Other high-ranking Hamas officials, such as Yahya Sinwar, prefer the military wing’s urgent approach to Haniyeh’s more patient one. In their view, maintaining the status quo is untenable in Gaza, where rising unemployment and poverty rates, closed borders, and the erratic supply of electrical power could damage Hamas’s ability to survive, particularly in light of the Egyptian embargo and the cutback in support from Iran.Gaza keeps surprising us. Every time it seems that the situation has never been worse, it plummets even further. One example is this week’s storm, which set a new record for electricity consumption in Israel. In Gaza, it caused a particularly long power outage. Instead of eight hours with electricity followed by 16 without, the people there had four hours on and 20 hours off.The cold was particularly bad in Shejaiya, Beit Hanoun and several other neighborhoods, where thousands of people whose homes were destroyed in the last war are living in prefabricated mobile homes with no proper insulation. Many homes were flooded in Khan Yunis, Hiza’a and several other places that had already been reduced to rubble during the last war with Israel. Almost everywhere in the Strip, groups of people could be seen huddling over burning barrels, trying to warm themselves in the frigid weather.“The animals in your safari in Ramat Gan have it better than the people here,” said Hisham, a resident of Gaza City, who visited the animal park near Tel Aviv in the 1990s.Gaza has never been in such a bad humanitarian situation, residents say, calling it much more difficult than it was on the eve of the last war.“Nobody is working, there are no construction materials in the market, and there is no money because there are no salaries,” said H., also a resident of Gaza City. “Hamas officials do not receive regular pay; rather, they receive NIS 1,000 to 1,200 shekels (about $300) every 50 days. The members of Islamic Jihad have no money either.“This is going to lead to an explosion,” said H. “It will be a miracle if 2016 ends without a war. It’s not up to Hamas or Israel anymore.”

China strongly condemns US for sending warship near island-Associated Press By GERRY SHIH-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

BEIJING (AP) — China strongly condemned the United States after a U.S. warship deliberately sailed near one of the Beijing-controlled islands in the hotly contested South China Sea to exercise freedom of navigation and challenge China's vast sea claims. The missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur sailed within 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) of Triton Island in the Paracel chain "to challenge excessive maritime claims of parties that claim the Paracel Islands," without notifying the three claimants beforehand, Defense Department spokesman Mark Wright said Saturday in Washington.China, Taiwan and Vietnam have overlapping claims in the Paracels and require prior notice from ships transiting what they consider their territorial waters. The latest operation was particularly aimed at China, which has raised tensions with the U.S. and its Southeast Asian neighbors by embarking on massive construction of man-made islands and airstrips in contested waters.Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh said that Vietnam respects "innocent passage" of ships through territorial waters in line with international law. State media quoted Binh as reiterating Vietnam's sovereignty over the Paracels and Spratlys and calling on nations to actively and practically contribute to peace and stability in the South China Sea.The U.S. has claimed the attempts to restrict navigational rights by requiring prior notice are inconsistent with international law and pledged to regularly carry out similar maneuvers. In October, another U.S. warship sailed in the nearby Spratly Islands near Subi Reef, where China has built one of seven artificial islands. The latest operation also drew Beijing's ire. Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun issued a statement saying the "unprofessional and irresponsible" U.S. action "severely violated Chinese law, sabotaged the peace, security and good order of the waters, and undermined the region's peace and stability."In an opinion published Sunday by the official Xinhua news agency, China described the maneuver as a "deliberate provocation" that raised doubts about the United States' sincerity just days after Secretary of State John Kerry visited Beijing for meetings about the South China Sea and North Korea that were called productive by both sides.China's official response has been restrained compared to the public outrage seen online, according to Xinhua. A social media search on Sunday showed a smattering of posts calling on China to adopt a tougher military posture against U.S. encroachment — if not wage war with the United States.China claims almost the entire South China Sea and its islands, reefs and atolls on historic grounds. The area has some of the world's busiest shipping lanes, and U.S. officials say ensuring freedom of navigation is in U.S. national interests, while not taking sides in the territorial disputes.China seized the unpopulated Triton Island, an area of 1.2 square kilometers (0.46 sq. miles), from former South Vietnam in 1974. In May 2014, China parked a huge oil drilling platform off the Vietnamese coast in the area, prompting Vietnam to send fishing boats and coast guard vessels to harass the rig and nearby Chinese vessels. Skirmishes led to collisions and the capsizing of at least one Vietnamese boat.___Associated Press writer Tran V. Minh in Hanoi, Vietnam, contributed to this report.

China braces for 2.9 billion trips during Lunar New Year-Associated Press-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese are packing train and bus stations as the peak travel season kicks into high gear this weekend with hundreds of millions of people going home for Spring Festival celebrations — or head for vacation destinations.Chinese travelers are expected to make 2.9 billion trips during the 40-day period between Jan. 21 and March 3, with the majority of those trips falling in the weeks around the Feb. 8 Lunar New Year, the Ministry of Transport said."I have my parents back in my hometown and I must go back and have the family reunion," said Ma Xijie, a migrant worker from Sichuan province who was travelling back home by train with his son and wife."It's great to have the whole family sit down and enjoy a family dinner together. I have been working far from home with my kid for a whole year," he said.At the Beijing railway station, student Ren Chongyuan from Shandong province said it was a bit easier to buy tickets this year, but he still had to book two months in advance. This year's travel crush — considered the largest annual human migration — may be relatively less severe due to a lackluster economy. In coastal Zhejiang province near Shanghai, officials expect a 4.4 percent drop in passenger traffic as jobs dry up and migrant laborers pack up early to head to their family homes in China's hinterlands well before the New Year.By comparison, Chinese made 3.6 billion trips during the same holiday period in 2014.

Russian Fighter Jet Came Within 15 Feet of US Air Force Plane, US Officials Say-ABC News By LUIS MARTINEZ-January 29, 2016 3:30 PM-YAHOONEWS

A Russian fighter came within 15 feet of a United States Air Force reconnaissance plane flying in international airspace over the Black Sea on Monday, U.S. military officials said today. The Pentagon is calling the intercept by a Russian SU-27 pilot as being conducted in “an unsafe and unprofessional manner” that put “both the American flight crew and himself at risk.”During the intercept of the RC-135U, the Russian pilot flew as close as 15 feet alongside the American reconnaissance plane, a Defense Department official said. It then banked hard to the right “with a heavy amount of power, which caused a destabilizing action for the RC-135."Close Encounter Between Russian Fighter Jet and US Spy Plane-The official said intercepts of American reconnaissance flights are common, “but this was unusually close,” which “was enough to cause concern.”“On January 25, 2016, a U.S. RC-135U flying a routine route in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian SU-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner,” said Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza, a Pentagon spokeswoman.“Aircraft intercepts are not unusual, but are normally routine events. In this case the intercept was not routine, and the Russian pilot acted in an unprofessional manner that put both the American flight crew and himself at risk. We have addressed our concerns on this matter appropriately," Baldanza said.

NATO chief urges Russia not to violate NATO airspace again-Reuters-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged Russia on Saturday to "take all necessary measures" to ensure NATO airspace was not violated again, after Turkey said a Russian warplane had entered its airspace on Friday despite radar warnings."A Russian combat aircraft violated Turkish airspace yesterday, despite repeated warnings by the Turkish authorities. Previous incidents have shown how dangerous such behavior is," Stoltenberg said in a statement."I call on Russia to act responsibly and to fully respect NATO airspace. Russia must take all necessary measures to ensure that such violations do not happen again."In a similar incident in November, Turkey shot down a Russian warplane flying a sortie over Syria that it said had violated its airspace, triggering a diplomatic rupture in which Russia imposed economic sanctions.(Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky)

Turkey says Russian jet violated its airspace again, warns of consequences-Reuters By Ece Toksabay-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey warned of consequences on Saturday after saying a Russian SU-34 jet had violated its airspace despite warnings, once more stoking tensions between two countries involved in Syria's war, but Russia denied that there had been any incursion. In a similar incident in November, Turkey shot down a Russian warplane flying a sortie over Syria that it said had violated its airspace, triggering a diplomatic rupture in which Russia imposed economic sanctions.Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov denied that any Russian plane had entered Turkish airspace, and called the Turkish allegation "pure propaganda".He said Turkish radar installations were not capable of identifying a particular aircraft or its type or nationality, and that no verbal warning had been issued in either English or Russian.Turkey's Foreign Ministry said in its statement that the Russian ambassador had been summoned late on Friday, and that the violation was a clear sign that Russia wanted issues between the two countries to escalate."We are making a clear call to the Russian Federation not to violate Turkish airspace, which is also NATO airspace," the statement said."We are emphasizing once again that the unwanted consequences of such irresponsible behavior will belong fully to the Russian Federation."NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the violation had taken place, and urged Russia to "take all necessary measures" to ensure NATO airspace was not violated again. "Previous incidents have shown how dangerous such behavior is," his statement said.Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he wanted to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin after the incident."I told our Foreign Ministry to convey my desire to meet Mr Putin personally. There has been no answer on this yet," Erdogan told reporters at the airport before departing for a visit to Latin America. The downing of the Russian warplane in November left relations between the two countries in tatters. Russia responded with economic sanctions that have hit Turkish exports and tourism revenues.(Additional reporting by Vladimir Soldatkin and Maria Tsvetkova in Moscow; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

In Syria talks, global powers pull in many directions-AFP By Cécile Feuillatre-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

Geneva (AFP) - The Syrian peace talks, which got off to a start of sorts this weekend, are meant to be a uniquely Syrian affair. But in reality there is a host of outside interests also at the table, in spirit at least. What began as a popular revolt against the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011 quickly degenerated into a multi-front civil war that sucked in regional and global powers and created a chaos exploited by brutal jihadist groups.Today, the war in Syria is as much about global politics and regional competition as it is about who runs the country. On one side are Russia and Iran, the chief financial and military backers of Assad. On the other stand Western countries, the Gulf monarchies and Turkey -- all of whom demand Assad's removal -- but each with its own priorities on the ground. The one enemy common to all parties is the Islamic State group (IS), though they disagree on how much of a priority its eradication should be.World powers also say they are committed to a diplomatic solution -- with everyone signing up to a timetable for the fledgling peace process at talks in Vienna in November and the UN last month. But squaring their contradictory demands will be a huge task.Iran will be particularly reluctant to abandon its ally, having sent large numbers of "military advisors" to Syria, as well as deploying its Lebanese proxy militia Hezbollah, which has lost hundreds of fighters in the conflict.Experts say that Russia, despite its air strikes in support of Assad's regime, may be willing to see him go, but only if a replacement is found who can guarantee that Moscow retains its last foothold in the Middle East."If Iran loses Syria, it loses by far its biggest ally in the Middle East. If Russia loses Syria, it's a big geopolitical blow at a time when it's facing isolation," said Shashank Joshi, senior researcher at the Royal United Services Institute in London.- Rising tensions -On the other side of the conflict, the United States abandoned the idea of bombing Assad's forces back in August 2013, even after the regime crossed its supposed "red line" when it used chemical weapons against opponents in a Damascus suburb.Washington has been reluctantly dragged into the conflict by the growing threat of IS, with US planes taking the lead in a prolonged bombing campaign against the jihadists in Syria as well as Iraq.It has supported some "moderate" opposition groups, but most of these are focused on fighting Assad, and US attempts to train and equip anti-IS troops ended in disaster last year when the new force collapsed almost immediately and the programme was abandoned.Observers say the United States may be moving away from the demand that Assad must stand down as a pre-condition for talks. That could put it at odds with its Arab allies led by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which both arm hardline militias against Assad and tend to see the conflict through the prism of their competition for regional dominance with Iran. The Gulf monarchies already feel sidelined by Western efforts to bring Iran back into the diplomatic fold since a deal on Tehran's nuclear programme and the recent lifting of sanctions.Regional tensions were further heightened when Saudi Arabia executed a Shiite cleric in Riyadh, leading to violent protests in Tehran. The two rivals are also engaged in a proxy war in Yemen. One of the more inscrutable players has been Turkey, which has suffered terror attacks by IS but tends to view Kurdish separatists as the bigger threat.Western governments have criticised Ankara for failing to seal its southern border, allowing IS to trade oil and receive supplies and foreign fighters.

Syrian opposition says it wants to make peace talks work, test Assad-Reuters By Stephanie Nebehay-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

GENEVA (Reuters) - A Syrian opposition delegation arrived in Geneva late on Saturday saying they were keen to make U.N. peace talks a success and test the government's intention to implement U.N. resolutions.Salim al-Muslat, spokesman for the High Negotiations Committee, said President Bashar al-Assad must release women and children from government jails and allow aid into besieged areas, but that there were no preconditions for talks.“We are keen to make this negotiation a success. But we should ask the other side. The other side is pretending to represent the Syrian people. In fact, he is killing the Syrian people," Muslat told a scrum of reporters as the delegation arrived at their hotel in Geneva after a flight from Riyadh.A U.N. Security Council resolution passed last month demands that all sides allow immediate humanitarian aid to all besieged areas, release arbitrarily detained prisoners and stop attacking civilian areas.Opposition coordinator Riad Hijab, who was not among the group that arrived in Geneva, said in a statement posted online that there would have to be humanitarian improvements to justify the delegation's continued presence at the talks. The HNC delegation of more than 20 people, including at least one woman, arrived in a large white van under police escort. Other HNC members had arrived earlier by taxi while the larger group was delayed by “visa issues” at Geneva airport.Muslat said the insistence on the implementation of the Security Council resolution was not a precondition for talks, but it was the responsibility of the Security Council members, who include Syria's chief ally Russia. An HNC member said on Friday that the opposition had a list of 3,000 women and children in Syrian government jails."Release (of) these women from jails is important to everybody, not to only Syrians," Muslat said. "Feeding these children, bringing bread and milk to them, it doesn’t take that much. But I believe people should really take responsibility for that and help Syrian people get rid of this regime."In almost five years of war, more than 250,000 people have been killed and more than 10 million driven from their homes. Almost half a million are living in besieged areas cut off from humanitarian aid."Diplomacy is not about who is sitting around the table, but about who truly wants to end the suffering," the HNC said in a statement. "The Assad regime has come here to pretend it wants peace while continuing to kill our people."(Reporting by Stephanie Nebehay and Kinda Makieh; writing by Tom Miles; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

Operations being restored at New York-area ports after shutdown-Reuters By Joseph Ax and Daniel Bases-January 29, 2016 8:32 PM-YAHOONEWS

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Operations at New York and New Jersey's cargo terminals were being restored on Friday night after more than a thousand longshoremen walked off the job earlier in the day, shuttering one of the United State's busiest port networks, officials said.Employees stopped working around 11 a.m. (1600 GMT), though the precise reason was unclear. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the terminals and leases them to port operators, said some nine hours later that operations were being restored and gates would open as scheduled on Monday. The work stoppage came as a surprise because "there were no major issues that we knew of to precipitate this," according to a Port Authority official who requested anonymity. The Port Authority and the International Longshoremen's Association urged workers to immediately return to work."We have heard your voices, we have heard your concerns, and we have taken action on your behalf," the union said in a statement. "We urge all ILA members to return to work."Over $200 billion worth of cargo moved through the port in 2014, according to the agency. About a quarter of U.S. gross domestic product is accounted within 200 to 250 miles (320 to 400 km) of the ports.Port Authority police were sent to the terminals to ensure public safety, according to the statement. The Port Authority official said there had been no word of any arrests by evening.Beverly Fedorko, a spokeswoman for the New York Shipping Association (NYSA), which represents the terminal operators and ocean carriers, said the longshoremen had not informed management of the "illegal" walkout.Fedorko said an emergency contract board meeting was called in the afternoon, resulting in deadlock. But an arbitrator found that the stoppage violated the contract's no strike provision, she said."During this time discussions took place between the ILA and NYSA with regard to outstanding issues concerning chassis, jurisdiction, hiring and technology," Fedorko said in a statement. "It was agreed to expeditiously seek solutions to these longstanding issues."New York and New Jersey ports are a major entry point for crude oil and an exit for refined products such as gasoline and heating oil. It was unclear if energy sector workers in the ports were participating in the walkout."I have not seen or heard anything yet that the strike was affecting the gasoline or heating oil futures markets," said Dominick Chirichella, senior partner at the Energy Management Institute in New York. Prices for both commodities were higher, in line with market fundamentals. The walkout affects several terminals, including Port Newark and terminals in Elizabeth and Bayonne, New Jersey, and the New York City borough of Staten Island. The port system is the third busiest in the United States and has 3,500 registered longshoremen, Fedorko said, although the number of workers on duty per day fluctuates depending on ships and other factors. The terminals annually handle nearly 6 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized cargo, according to the Port Authority. A standard 40-foot container equals two TEUs.(Reporting by Joseph Ax and Daniel Bases; Additional reporting by Scott DiSavino in New York and Curtis Skinner in San Francisco; Editing by Toni Reinhold and Lisa Shumaker)

Obama to make first visit to U.S. mosque next week-Reuters-JAN 31,16-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will make his first visit as president to a U.S. mosque next week in a defense of religious freedom, the White House said, following a rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric in the United States.Obama will visit on Wednesday the Islamic Society of Baltimore mosque, where he will hold a roundtable with the community and deliver remarks, a White House official said on Saturday. At the mosque, the president will "reiterate the importance of staying true to our core values – welcoming our fellow Americans, speaking out against bigotry, rejecting indifference, and protecting our nation's tradition of religious freedom," the official said.He has visited mosques outside the United States on his trips abroad.Obama, a Democrat in his last year as president, has appealed to Americans to reject anti-Muslim comments by politicians, most notably Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump.Trump, who is leading the Republican field in opinion polls, called for a ban on Muslim visitors to the United States after a Muslim couple inspired by Islamist militants killed 14 people in a shooting in San Bernardino, California, in early December.According to a Gallup poll in December, Americans are now more likely to name terrorism as the top issue facing the United States than any other issue.(Reporting by Roberta Rampton and Idrees Ali; Editing by Mary Milliken)

DEAD ANIMALS

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

Hundreds of seagulls found dead on Sea of Galilee beach-Birds believed to have died of botulism poisoning; vets trying to save lives of of another 78-By Sue Surkes January 28, 2016, 10:59 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Hundreds of seagulls have been found dead on the Sea of Galilee’s western shore, with an initial inquiry pointing to botulism poisoning.Another 78 injured birds were given emergency first aid at the Tel Afeq National Park veterinary hospital’s quarantine station in Tel Aviv, with some being tested to eliminate any suspicion that they may have contracted bird flu, the Walla website reported Thursday. The gulls were subsequently transferred to the wild animal hospital at the Ramat Gan Safari, some of them in serious condition.Botulism spores are commonly found in soil and water. They produce the botulinum toxin in conditions such as low oxygen and hot temperatures.“It’s not a sight that we are used to,” a spokesperson for the Safari said. There had been cases of 15 animals needing treatment, but 80 in one go was “a real mass attack.”The treatment would continue for several days in the hope that the gulls could be returned to nature as quickly as possible, the Safari added.Dr Roni King, chief veterinarian for the Nature and Parks Authority, said botulism poisoning was a known phenomenon. There had been cases in the US of hundreds of thousands of dead birds being found in lakes.Less than two months ago in Israel, a smaller number of gulls sustained poisoning in the Hadera area of the Mediterranean coast.A few years ago, 150 birds were picked up from the beach between Acre and the Krayot, north of Haifa, of which only 50 survived. In the current case, the poison was not from the Sea of Galilee, King said. The birds probably picked it up at their feeding site, only feeling the effects when they flew back to the lake.

FBI arrests man who plotted attacks on Israel, Masonic Temple-Samy Mohamed Hamzeh of Milwaukee planned to West Bank assault on soldiers, citizens, later abandoned it-By AP January 28, 2016, 9:54 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

MILWAUKEE — The mother of a man accused of planning a mass shooting at a Masonic temple in Milwaukee says her son was set up by the FBI.According to the authorities, Samy Mohamed Hamzeh also planned to attack Israelis, a plot he later abandoned. The Jordanian-born Khawla Hamzeh said that despite a criminal complaint describing her son as a Muslim extremist, her 23-year-old son is not very religious and was just trying to convince his friends he was tough.“He’s not mature. You know guys, they want to show they are brave,” she told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper.Samy Mohamed Hamzeh is charged with unlawfully possessing a machine gun and receiving and possessing improperly registered firearms. He is accused, but not indicted, of planning to attack the temple and kill 30 people. His mother said she wonders why the FBI watched Hamzeh for months without arresting him and then sold him guns.Wisconsin’s top federal defender said Hamzeh’s defense will likely focus on the accuracy of undercover recordings that were made in Arabic and translated into English.According to court documents, FBI agents were tipped off in September that Hamzeh planned to travel to Israel to attack Israeli soldiers and citizens in the West Bank. He abandoned those plans due to “family, financial and logistic reasons,” instead focusing his efforts on a domestic attack.Hamzeh was arrested Monday after he paid two undercover FBI agents for two automatic machine guns and a silencer.During his court appearance Tuesday, Hamzeh told US Magistrate Judge David Jones that he had read and understood the federal complaint filed against him, but that he doesn’t agree with it. The hearing was closed, but the newspaper obtained an audio recording and posted it online.Samy Hamzeh was supporting his family because his father was having trouble finding steady work since moving to the US last year, his mother said. The Associated Press.

Rouhani in Paris mocks Europe’s reaction to migrants-During historic first trip to France, Iranian president says the continent is overreacting to Syrian refugee crisis-By AP and Times of Israel staff January 28, 2016, 10:50 pm

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Thursday that his country should be an example to Europe on migrant absorption, mocking complaints about the ongoing refugee crisis voiced in the continent in recent months.Speaking at a prominent French think tank during an historic visit to France, Rouhani highlighted Iran’s experience hosting three million people fleeing neighboring Afghanistan as an example for a Europe struggling to absorb migrants. In a speech to IFRI, the Institut Français des Relations Internationales, Rouhani said “our nation has shouldered such a heavy weight through all these years, accepting 3 million migrants without complaining.”As at least one million people fleeing war and poverty in Syria and elsewhere reached Europe last year, he said, “Europeans with all their economic power and resources were saying ‘100,000 migrants have arrived to our soil, what do we do now? 200,000 have swarmed (our borders), what do we do now?'”Rouhani also told the IFRI that the negotiations over his country’s nuclear conflict with the West should serve as an example for solving multiple regional crises in the Middle East. For such diplomacy to work, he said, both sides must “lower our pretensions.”Speaking through a translator, he said “that allowed us to reach accords” on curbing Iran’s nuclear program and lifting sanctions. “Each side must feel it is a win-win agreement.”Rouhani’s visit to Paris is focused on renewing trade ties, but France also wants to draw in Iran’s help in peacemaking in the region, notably in Syria and Yemen, and easing tensions with regional rival Saudi Arabia. The French government welcomed Rouhani on Thursday with promises of a new beginning in an old relationship, starting with investments to boost Iran’s flagging economy crippled by decades of sanctions over its nuclear activities.Rouhani, whose visit was also met with protests, decried the sanctions, saying history has shown that they “never worked” and said the nuclear deal that led to the lifting of sanctions this month can serve as a model for solutions in other crises, notably in the Middle East.“Today, we must use the positive atmosphere for a new elan,” he told a group of French business leaders.About 20 agreements will be signed after a meeting between Rouhani and President Francois Hollande. PSA Peugeot Citroen announced a joint venture with Iran Khodro to produce latest-generation vehicles in Tehran by the end of 2017.Rouhani’s trip was originally scheduled to visit Paris in November, but the trip was called off after Islamic extremists carried out attacks around Paris that killed 130 people.

Oberlin College president to discuss campus anti-Semitism with alumni-Former students say BDS movement has created an anti-Jewish climate at the Ohio liberal arts school-By JTA January 28, 2016, 9:48 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The president of Oberlin College will speak with members of an alumni group that has raised concerns about the anti-Semitic climate on campus.Marvin Krislov, who is Jewish, will conduct a phone conversation with former students of the Ohio liberal arts college on Friday. The phone call comes several weeks after 200 alumni wrote to the college administration to voice concern about the actions of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, or BDS, at Oberlin and a school culture they believe tolerates anti-Semitism.“Several student organizations at Oberlin have assumed the role as the mouthpiece of the BDS movement, which claims to be a defender of Palestinian rights, but whose inflammatory language falsely portraying Israel as an illegitimate, colonialist and murderous regime demonstrates that its primary goal is to demonize the Jewish state,” read the letter dated January 3.“Because participation in these groups requires denouncing Israel, the message to Jewish students can be summed up as follows: Either forfeit your allegiance to Israel and join us, or we will brand you as an enemy of justice and complicit in the oppression of the Palestinian people.”The letter mentioned several incidents at the school, including the expulsion of the Kosher Halal co-op from the Oberlin Student Cooperation Association and a protest against Israel on Rosh Hashanah that Jewish students had to pass through on their way to holiday services.Oberlin has a reputation as a particularly liberal and activist college, and in the wake of the January 3 letter, Jewish alumni have taken to Facebook to share examples of activities they witnessed that veered toward anti-Semitism.“The multiple times the Holocaust was referred to as ‘white on white crime’ by my POC peers and hip white Jewish peers,” Oberlin alumnus Isabel Sherrell wrote in a January 11 Facebook post listing numerous experiences that made her uncomfortable as a student. The group Oberlin Students for a Free Palestine responded to the alumni letter with a letter of its own rejecting the charges of anti-Semitism and vowing to continue its protest of Israel.“We see these accusations as a way to limit the free speech of students, silence political activism, and intimidate pro-Palestinian activists,” the group wrote. “We believe that solidarity with an oppressed people and demands to defend their human rights do not and will never constitute anti-Semitism. It is our conviction of self-determination and autonomy that will continue to drive us, no matter how many attempt to malign us, to call for a free Palestine.”

US blacklists two Hezbollah ‘money launderers’-Mohamad Noureddine and Hamdi Zaher El Dine of Trade Point International said to have moved funds around for Lebanese terror group-By AFP January 28, 2016, 10:48 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The US Treasury said Thursday that it has added two Lebanese men to its sanctions blacklist for laundering money for the Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah. The Treasury said Mohamad Noureddine and Hamdi Zaher El Dine worked through Noureddine’s Beirut company Trade Point International to move money for Hezbollah-linked businesses and individuals already on US blacklists.“Noureddine has utilized an extensive network across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East to provide money laundering, bulk cash shipment, black market currency exchange, and other financial services to a variety of clients, including Hezbollah members,” the Treasury said in a statement.Hamdi Zaher El Dine was an employee of Trade Point.Hezbollah, the Shiite militant group and political party, has been officially designated as a terrorist group by the United States since 1997.Being designated for sanctions allows the Treasury to freeze any assets on US territory tied to the individuals, and forbids any Americans or US institutions from doing business with them.In July, the US Treasury added three Hezbollah military officials and a businessman tied to the group to the blacklist, citing their support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Treasury named Mustafa Badr Al Din, said to be in charge of Hezbollah’s military operations in Syria; and Fu’ad Shukr and Ibrahim Aqil, both members of Hezbollah’s top military body, the Jihad Council, and both involved in the group’s military activities in Syria, in support of the Assad regime. Also named was Abd al Nur Shalan, which the US called the “point person for the procurement and transshipment of weapons and materiel for (Hezbollah) and its Syrian partners for at least 15 years.”

Sweden, Finland to deport tens of thousands of migrants-Stockholm could send back as many as 80,000 people; Helsinki to reject two-thirds of 32,000 aslyum seekers who arrived this year-By Pia OHLIN January 28, 2016, 10:56 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AFP) — Finland joined Sweden on Thursday in announcing plans to deport tens of thousands of failed asylum seekers in a bid to contain the migrant crisis, as at least 31 more people died trying to reach the European Union. The two Nordic countries are both struggling to cope with an influx of refugees and migrants fleeing misery in the Middle East and elsewhere — receiving among the highest numbers of arrivals per capita in the EU.The Finnish government expects to deport around two thirds of the 32,000 asylum seekers that arrived in 2015, Paivi Nerg, administrative director of the interior ministry, told AFP.“In principle we speak of about two-thirds, meaning approximately 65 percent of the 32,000 will get a negative decision (on their asylum applications),” he told AFP.In neighboring Sweden, Interior Minister Anders Ygeman said Wednesday that the government is planning over several years to deport up to 80,000 people whose asylum applications are set to be rejected.“We are talking about 60,000 people but the number could climb to 80,000,” he told Swedish media, adding that, as in Finland, the operation would require the use of specially chartered aircraft. He estimated that Sweden would reject around half of the 163,000 asylum requests received in 2015.Swedish Migration Minister Morgan Johansson said authorities faced a difficult task in deporting such large numbers, but insisted failed asylum seekers had to return home.“Otherwise we would basically have free immigration and we can’t manage that,” he told news agency TT.The clampdown came as 25 bodies, including those of 10 children, were discovered off the Greek island of Samos, in the latest tragedy to strike migrants risking the dangerous Mediterranean crossing in a bid to start new lives in Europe. The Italian navy meanwhile said it had recovered six bodies from a sinking dinghy off Libya — and in Bulgaria, the frozen bodies of two men, believed to be migrants, were found near the border with Serbia.-Pushing back the tide-More than one million people traveled to Europe in 2015 — the majority of them refugees fleeing conflict in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan — in the continent’s worst migration crisis since World War II.Nearly 4,000 people died trying to reach Europe by sea last year, according to the International Organization for Migration. As Europe struggles to respond to the unprecedented influx, a top Dutch politician said the Netherlands was working with some EU members on a plan to send migrants back to Turkish soil. The proposal would see asylum granted to up to 250,000 others already hosted by Turkey, Diederik Samsom said. But rights group Amnesty International blasted the plan, saying it was “fundamentally flawed since it would hinge on illegally returning asylum seekers and refugees.”In Britain, the government said it would take in an unspecified number of migrant children who have been separated from their parents by conflict in Syria and elsewhere.Officials will work with the United Nations’ UNHCR refugee agency to identify youngsters eligible to take up residence in Britain, the interior ministry announced.Flimsy boats packed with migrants are still arriving on Greek beaches every day, undeterred by Europe’s wintry conditions.Athens is under increasing pressure to stem the influx, with the European Commission on Wednesday saying Greece had “seriously neglected” its duty to protect the bloc’s borders.Greece could face border controls with the EU’s passport-free Schengen zone if it does not protect the bloc’s frontiers, Brussels warned. With the influx showing little sign of abating, many countries — including Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and France — have tightened asylum rules in a bid to discourage new arrivals.Sweden has seen the number of new migrants entering the country plunge since it brought in systematic photo ID checks on travellers on January 4.Concerns have grown over conditions in Sweden’s overcrowded asylum facilities, however, and officials have called for greater security after an employee at a refugee center for unaccompanied youths was stabbed to death earlier this week.A 15-year-old boy is accused of attacking 22-year-old Alexandra Mezher at the centre in Molndal on Sweden’s west coast. Her death has led to questions about conditions inside some centres, with too few adults and employees to care for the children, many traumatised by war.Sweden took in around 35,400 unaccompanied minors in 2015.

Khamenei airs Holocaust denial video on international Remembrance Day-Iran’s supreme leader says Europeans are silenced when they try to question historically accepted account of genocide against Jews-By Times of Israel staff January 28, 2016, 12:22 am

As the global community marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day Wednesday, Iran’s supreme leader uploaded a video to his official website questioning the magnitude of the Nazi regime’s mass murder campaign against the Jewish people during World War II.In a video titled “Are the Dark Ages Over,” a series of photos showing killed or injured Palestinian children is displayed on screen, while a Farsi-speaking man, presumably Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself, can be heard condemning the nations of the world for offering support to Israel.“It is Western powers headed by America that are [supporting Israel],” the narrator says. “This is while they say in their slogans that they are opposed to terrorism and [the Islamic State terrorist group].”The speaker goes on to accuse European nations of silencing any view that does not conform to the historically accepted account of the genocide against the Jews by Nazi Germany.“No one in European countries dares to speak about the Holocaust, while it is not clear whether the core of the matter is reality or not,” the narrator continues. “Even if it is reality, it is not clear how it happened. Speaking about the Holocaust and expressing doubts about it is considered to be a great sin. If someone does this, they stop, arrest, imprison and sue him. This is why they claim to be supporters of freedom.”The video was uploaded as Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani visited Europe, with trips to Italy, where he met with the pope on Tuesday, and France. Before leaving Rome for Paris on Wednesday, Rouhani charged that the “Zionist lobby” in the US was preventing warmer Iran-US ties.Khamenei has expressed doubts about the historicity of the Holocaust in the past.“The Holocaust is an event whose reality is uncertain and if it has happened, it’s uncertain how it has happened,” Khamenei said during an address in 2014, according to a Twitter account under his name thought to be run by his office.“Expressing opinion about the Holocaust, or casting doubt on it, is one of the greatest sins in the West. They prevent this, arrest the doubters, try them while claiming to be a free country,” said Khamenei, who has repeatedly called the Holocaust a “myth.”Officials in Iran have been reluctant to admit the slaughter of 6 million Jews in Europe at the hands of the Nazis during World War II.Earlier this month Israeli officials called on the UN to condemn Iran for the Tehran municipality’s annual Holocaust denial cartoon contest, set to take place in June of this year. The winner of the event sponsored by the Tehran municipality will receive a $50,000 cash prize.Organizers say the competition is designed to highlight the world’s double standard in defending caricatures of the Muslim prophet Mohammed, whose depiction is forbidden in Islam.Israel’s UN ambassador Danny Danon also called on Ban to condemn the competition, claiming “this anti-Semitic act represents the pure evil of the Iranian regime.”

Israeli man seriously wounded in stabbing attack-Palestinian terror suspect arrested at scene in Givat Ze’ev, north of Jerusalem; crowd reportedly attacks him, tries to block ambulance taking him to the hospital-By Adiv Sterman and Judah Ari Gross January 27, 2016, 11:30 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

An Israeli man was wounded Wednesday night in a terror stabbing at a gas station outside the West Bank settlement of Givat Ze’ev, north of Jerusalem. The victim was treated by medical teams at the scene. The Magen David Adom first-aid service said he was stabbed in the upper body and moderately to severely wounded. He was rushed to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem for further treatment, police said.Witnesses at the scene said the suspected terrorist attempted to flee the area, but was caught by civilians who alerted security personnel. According to police, the Palestinian terror suspect was subdued and arrested by security forces.Nati Ostri, a volunteer for the Hatzalah rescue service who treated the victim, said police arrived in force immediately after the attack and prevented the stabber from attacking others.“When we arrived at the scene, we saw a 36-year-old man lying on the ground at the gas station,” Magen David Adom paramedic Dudi Gur said.“He was fully conscious and suffering from multiple stab wounds to the upper body,” he added. “We put him in the intensive care ambulance and on the way to the hospital we treated him, including stopping the bleeding and giving him fluids. He was in moderate to severe condition.”A picture of the stabber’s ID posted to Twitter identified him as Abada Abu Ras, 17, from the nearby Palestinian town of Bir Nabala. The attacker was also reportedly injured by a mob at the scene, and civilians initially blocked an ambulance taking him to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus, Walla news reported. The crowd clashed with police and were dispersed. Members of the crowd shouted “why didn’t you kill him” and “death to Arabs,” the 0404 news site reported.Earlier Wednesday, a Palestinian teen was arrested on suspicion that he had attempted to stab a soldier at the Qalandiya checkpoint near Jerusalem. There were no injuries in the incident.During a routine army search on a bus at the checkpoint, the teenager was asked to show his identity card, and when he failed to do so, was requested to step out of the vehicle. At that point the 17-year-old pulled out a knife and tried to assault an IDF soldier, but the weapon fell from his hand, police said.Soldiers subsequently apprehended the teenager, a resident of the West Bank city of Nablus, and transferred him to a nearby security facility for interrogation.

Slain woman, 23, remembered as ‘beloved, sweet, and full of light’-Shlomit Krigman, a native of Shadmot Mehola, succumbed to wounds sustained during stabbing inside West Bank settlement of Beit Horon-By Adiv Sterman and Raoul Wootliff January 26, 2016, 12:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The death of 23-year-old Shlomit Krigman, who sustained serious injuries during a stabbing attack in the West Bank settlement of Beit Horon Monday and died of her wounds Tuesday morning, left the young woman’s friends and relatives shaken, as they grieved and recalled her warm heart, artistic nature, and her social conscience.“She was a caring person, close and caring toward her friends,” Einat Dermer told the NRG news site. “She was just a person who wanted everything to be good, and she did that in her own way.”Krigman, who had previously served as a group leader for the Bnei Akiva Youth Group in Beit Horon, was spending time with her grandparents in the settlement when she was attacked, according to a message from the community sent out Tuesday morning.Though originally from the West Bank settlement of Shadmot Mehola, located in the Beit She’an Valley, Krigman spent much time in Beit Horon, outside Jerusalem, and was seen as a resident by many who lived in the small settlement.“Shlomit, your address may have been in Shadmot Mehola, but you were without a doubt a resident of Beit Horon,” one resident wrote on Facebook in tribute to her. “Shlomit, part of the landscape of Beit Horon, a smiling, quiet flower who brightened up her surroundings.”Krigman’s cousin Danny Hirschberg, who heads the national-religious Bnei Akiva group in Israel, said his family was in “great pain.”“We had a hard night of turmoil and hopes that ended with a great sadness,” he told Ynet. “Shlomit was a beloved, sweet girl, always smiling, energetic and full of light. We are in great pain. Let us hope for better days.”Krigman had recently completed her bachelors degree in industrial design at the University of Ariel, and was trying to decide on a path to pursue in the field.“Shlomit, a daughter of Shadmot Mehola, was a sweet and gentle girl,” Matti Carmi, a close personal friend, told Ynet. “She studied industrial design at Ariel and displayed an amazing final project; she built a mobile library. She was a talented girl, sociable and loved by everyone.”Krigman’s funeral was scheduled for 1 p.m. at Jerusalem’s Har Hamenuhot Cemetery. She is survived by her parents and her six siblings.Following the stabbing attack at Beit Horon, Krigman was evacuated to Hadassah Hospital in Mount Scopus in critical condition where her condition was defined as life-threatening. Despite efforts to stabilize her, she died in the early hours of Tuesday morning, a statement from the hospital said.Another woman, 58, was moderately injured in the attack, which took place outside a small market in the settlement. The Magen David Adom rescue service said Krigman was in critical condition when they arrived on the scene.“They took us to a woman … who was unconscious and suffering from stab wounds to the upper body,” senior MDA medic Lior Levy said. “We put her in the intensive care ambulance and gave her lifesaving treatment on the way to the hospital. She was in very serious condition.”Both attackers, one from nearby Beit Ur al-Tahta and one from the Ramallah area, were shot and killed by a security guard. One victim was stabbed in the store and a second as the two attackers attempted to flee the scene, according to initial accounts.Security footage showed the two terrorists, clad in black and with knives raised, attempting to enter the grocery store, but being blocked by a man, store owner Mordechai Shalem, who pushed them away with the shopping cart.During a sweep of the surrounding area, police officers found two “suspicious objects,” which they feared could be pipe bombs, a police spokesperson said. A sapper was called to the scene to determine if the objects were indeed improvised explosive devices, and disarm them if need be, the official said.Officials said later that the devices were improvised bombs, pointing to a well-planned attack. The two terrorists were named as Ibrahim Al’an, 23, from the West Bank Palestinian village of Beit Ur al-Tahta, and Hassin Abu Gush, 17, from the Qalandiya refugee camp near Jerusalem. The settlement, home to some 300 families, is situated alongside Route 443, a major highway leading to Jerusalem, and has been mostly immune to other violence that has rocked parts of the West Bank in the last five months. A Border Police base is located next to the entrance of the settlement. The terror attack was the third in just over a week to take place inside a settlement. On January 17, a terrorist infiltrated the settlement of Otniel in the southern West Bank, stabbing mother-of-six Dafna Meir to death.A day later, a terrorist sneaked into the settlement of Tekoa, south of Jerusalem, and knifed a pregnant woman, Michal Froman, moderately wounding her.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Settlements warned to stay alert following multiple attacks-Civilian security personnel encouraged to carry firearms at all times after third attack inside West Bank community; IDF maintains lockdown of Palestinian village-By Judah Ari Gross January 26, 2016, 1:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

In light of Monday night’s stabbing attack in a Jewish settlement outside of Jerusalem, the IDF has encouraged civilian security personnel in the West Bank to carry their weapons at all times. In addition, Palestinians will not be allowed to travel into or out of the Palestinian town of Beit Ur al-Tahta, where one of the terrorists from Monday’s attack hailed from, except for “humanitarian cases” — for ambulances or other emergency rescue services — an IDF spokesperson said.Palestinian workers will also not be allowed into the Otniel and Beit Horon settlements on Tuesday, the official said.On Monday evening two terrorists climbed over the fence into Beit Horon, located on a major highway just outside Jerusalem. The pair stabbed two women, 23-year-old Shlomit Krigman, who died of her wounds on Tuesday, and a 58-year-old woman. The pair tried to enter a grocery store but were kept out by the market’s proprietor, who fought the two men off with a shopping cart.A civilian security guard then shot and killed the pair as they continued their rampage through the settlement, throwing three homemade pipe bombs near the store that failed to detonate, police said.Following the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the army Monday evening to prepare a wide-ranging plan to increase settlement security.Under Netanyahu’s orders, the army set up a perimeter around Beit Ur al-Tahta and took away work permits from members of the attackers’ families — a standard practice of the Defense Ministry’s Civil Administration, which manages the relationship between Palestinians and the Israeli government, a spokesperson said.Tensions have already been high in the West Bank following the fatal stabbing of Dafna Meir, a mother of six, in the Otniel settlement outside of Hebron on Sunday night and the attack on Michal Froman, who was five months pregnant, in the Tekoa settlement the next day.Following those attacks, the IDF limited the entrance of Palestinian workers into some Jewish communities in the West Bank. Palestinians were first barred from entering most Jewish settlements, but that restriction was eased on Sunday to allow workers to enter all settlements except for Otniel — and now Beit Horon, as well.Private security personnel and civilian first response teams, who have ties to the IDF and receive rifles from the army, have also been put on high alert due to the string of attacks, the army said.“Whoever has an IDF weapon has been instructed to carry it at all times,” an IDF spokesperson said. This measure was not a change in procedure but merely an added emphasis on alertness, the official added. The head of the Tekoa settlement’s security program also encouraged residents to arm themselves in light of the attacks.“We request that all those with civilian gun permits (pistols) to also carry their weapons throughout the day,” Tekoa security wrote in an email to residents.

UN chief rebuffs Netanyahu’s claim that he stokes terror-Ban Ki-moon’s aide says international body’s leader stands by comments that ‘Palestinian frustration’ drives violence-By Times of Israel staff and AFP January 27, 2016, 11:07 pm

UN Director General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday rejected Israeli claims that his comments about “Palestinian frustration” stoke terrorism, his spokesman said, adding that Ban believes “nothing, absolutely nothing, can justify terrorism.”Ban sparked Israeli outrage Tuesday with his comments about the terror attacks of the past four months, in which more than 25 Israelis have been killed.“Stabbings, vehicle attacks, and shootings by Palestinians targeting Israeli civilians – all of which I condemn — and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces, have continued to claim lives,” Ban had told the UN Security Council, adding: “Palestinian frustration is growing under the weight of a half century of occupation and the paralysis of the peace process.” He said that it was “human nature to react to occupation.”Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday that Ban stands by “every word of his statement” to the Security Council.Palestinians and Israelis must understand that “the status quo is untenable,” he added.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday accused the United Nations chief of “stoking terror.”“There is no justification for terrorism,” Netanyahu said. “The Palestinian terrorists don’t want to build a state; they want to destroy a state, and they say that proudly. They want to murder Jews everywhere and they state that proudly. They don’t murder for peace and they don’t murder for human rights.”The UN has “lost its neutrality and its moral force, and these statements by the Secretary-General do nothing to improve its situation,” he said in a furious video statement. Ban’s remarks, said Netanyahu, “stoke terror.”In response to Ban, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said the UN chief’s comments “harm the global fight against terror, that Israel is leading, and gives legitimacy to those murderers to continue attacking.”Yesh Atid party leader Yair Lapid also rushed to denounce Ban’s remarks.“Terrorism against innocent civilians can not be justified. No one should provide excuses for it, especially not the UN Secretary-General. Terrorism against innocent civilians is the result of nothing except the murderous insanity of the perpetrators,” he said.

UN's Ban in new swipe at Israel over 'stifling' occupation-AFP-JAN 27,16-YAHOONEWS

United Nations (United States) (AFP) - Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday renewed his criticism of Israel's "stifling" occupation of Palestinian territories, a day after similar hard-hitting remarks by the UN Secretary-General angered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The UN chief made clear that he would not retreat from the broadside he directed at Israel over its expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.UN diplomats said privately that Ban had upped the pressure on Netanyahu in a final bid to revive hopes for peace before he steps down as secretary-general at the end of the year."After nearly 50 years of occupation -- after decades of waiting for the fulfilment of the Oslo promises -- Palestinians are losing hope," Ban told a UN committee on Palestinian rights."Young people especially are losing hope. They are angered by the stifling policies of the occupation."Netanyahu on Tuesday accused Ban of "encouraging terror" after Ban said that it was "human nature to react to occupation."Speaking to the UN committee, Ban reiterated that "nothing excuses terror," but added that a security clampdown will not succeed in settling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The UN chief called for a return to negotiations, saying it was the "one and only path to a just and lasting solution -- an end to the occupation that began in 1967" and a Palestinian state."You can count on me to continue to speak up and speak out -- to push and to prod -- to do all in my power to achieve long-overdue Israeli-Palestinian peace," he said.Ban said Palestinians had heard "half a century of statements" condemning Israel's occupation, but that their lives had not improved."We issue statements. We express concern. We voice solidarity. But life hasn’t changed. And some Palestinians wonder: Is this all meant to simply run out the clock? "They ask: Are we meant to watch as the world endlessly debates how to divide land while it disappears before our very eyes?"The UN chief's sharp criticism of Israel came amid ongoing Israeli-Palestinian violence and recent Israeli decisions to build new Jewish settlements in the West Bank. The United Nations has branded Israeli settlement expansions illegal, arguing that they are an attempt to undermine plans for a Palestinian state by absorbing land earmarked for the new country.

Hundreds in Paris protest Rouhani’s visit to France-Demonstrators carry photos of Iranian activists imprisoned or executed in the two years since president took office-By Rina Bassist January 27, 2016, 9:09 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

PARIS — Some 250 people demonstrated Wednesday at the Republic Square in Paris against Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to France. The demonstration was organized by labor unions, left-wing groups and associations of Iranians who oppose the regime. Many of the participants held aloft photos of Iranian activists imprisoned in Iran or activists executed there in the past two years, since Rouhani was elected president. One of the demonstration’s leaders said about 2,000 people have been executed in Iran since Rouhani became president, and that Tehran maintains a policy of arresting those who criticize the government. The demonstration joins a massive campaign in French media and social networks against Rouhani’s visit. The campaign focuses on the violation of human rights in Iran and on its support for terrorism.France’s main newspapers – Le Monde, Le Figaro and Liberation — all published over the past two days editorials stating that Iran has not changed and has not yet become a progressive and liberal country with which France can renew relations, especially against the backdrop of Iranian ties with Hezbollah’s military wing and its involvement in the Syrian civil war.Several other demonstrations have been scheduled for Thursday, including a large rally, organized by several Jewish groups, that is set to take place outside of the French senate. NGOs dedicated to human rights and women’s rights and student organizations are also planning to hold protests.A French expert on Iran, former diplomat Francois Nicoullaud, told The Times of Israel that while Iran has indeed meticulously fulfilled its part of the nuclear agreement with world powers, it has not refrained from hostility toward Israel and delegitimization of the Jewish state.“We can only hope that renewed ties with the West will influence Iranian society to the point that the regime as well will abandon its hostility toward Israel and its ties to terror organizations,” he said, adding that Rouhani’s visit to Europe and the message of renewing relations with the international community would assist the Iranian president in the upcoming parliamentarian elections in Iran, scheduled for February.Thierry Coville, an expert on the Iranian economy, told The Times of Israel that French business people have been waiting eagerly for 10 years for relations with Tehran to be renewed.“When the sanctions were imposed, the French companies left Iran,” he said. “Some of them, like Peugeot, had to lay off thousands of workers and even shut down plants. The French automobile and energy sectors relied heavily on the Iranian market, which was the largest one for French exports outside of the European Union.”
