A deadly bacteria has been discovered in four premature babies and a new mother at a Tel Aviv hospital, media reported Wednesday. All five were isolated from other patients.The CRE (Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae) was discovered in a woman who had just given birth to twins at the Ichilov Hospital, the Ynet news site reported.The bacteria was then subsequently discovered in her two babies and two other newborns in the premature baby ward.CRE is a bacteria that is frequently found in hospitals and very difficult to treat as it is resistant to most antibiotics. It can be fatal in up to 50 percent of people who become infected, according to the US Center for Disease Control.The hospital said that while all five patients were found to be carrying the bacteria, none of them had become ill. No other cases were discovered in the hospital.“All of us carry bacteria in our intestines, but this bacteria that was found among the premature babies is known to be antibiotic resistant,” Professor Dror Mandel, the director of the hospital’s neonatal unit, told the Walla news website. “It’s important to clarify that none of the babies are sick; they are just carrying.”“By isolating and treating the premature babies we ensured that no other baby was infected and we hope that we have stopped the spread of the bacteria,” Mandel said.

A deadly bacteria has been discovered in four premature babies and a new mother at a Tel Aviv hospital, media reported Wednesday. All five were isolated from other patients.The CRE (Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae) was discovered in a woman who had just given birth to twins at the Ichilov Hospital, the Ynet news site reported.The bacteria was then subsequently discovered in her two babies and two other newborns in the premature baby ward.CRE is a bacteria that is frequently found in hospitals and very difficult to treat as it is resistant to most antibiotics. It can be fatal in up to 50 percent of people who become infected, according to the US Center for Disease Control.The hospital said that while all five patients were found to be carrying the bacteria, none of them had become ill. No other cases were discovered in the hospital.“All of us carry bacteria in our intestines, but this bacteria that was found among the premature babies is known to be antibiotic resistant,” Professor Dror Mandel, the director of the hospital’s neonatal unit, told the Walla news website. “It’s important to clarify that none of the babies are sick; they are just carrying.”“By isolating and treating the premature babies we ensured that no other baby was infected and we hope that we have stopped the spread of the bacteria,” Mandel said.

DAMASCUS — Around 620 rebels and their families began evacuating a besieged town southwest of the Syrian capital on Wednesday under a deal with the government, a local official told AFP.“The buses of rebels have begun moving,” said Hassan Ghandour, a member of the local committee overseeing the deal in Moadamiyat al-Sham.He said the buses held rebels as well as their family members and would head to Idlib province, northwest of Damascus.Moadamiyet al-Sham has been under a devastating government siege since early 2013.Syria’s government has championed such local deals — which typically see rebels evacuated in exchange for an end to their encirclement — as a way to bring stability to the war-ravaged country.Another member of the local reconciliation committee who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity said the evacuees — rebels and civilians — numbered 2,100 people.Any remaining rebels would hand themselves in to Syrian authorities “to have their status regularized,” the member said.“Then, the Syrian army will enter the town and state institutions will return to it. Infrastructure like water and electricity networks will be repaired beginning on Sunday,” the member added.More than 300,000 people have been killed since Syria’s conflict erupted in March 2011.

A Palestinian woman allegedly attempted a stabbing attack at the Tapuah Junction, south of Nablus in the West Bank, Wednesday, and was shot dead by Israeli police.There were no injuries to Israeli security forces or civilians.“Attempted stabbing at Tapuah Junction,” the Israel Police tweeted. “A short while ago a female suspect approached Border Police officers at the scene holding a knife. When she failed to heed their calls to halt, they shot and neutralized her.”In a subsequent statement confirming the alleged attacker was killed, police said officers fired warning shots in the air before opening fire on her. They said she was 19 years old, from the nearby village of Asira ash-Shamaliya.In the aftermath of the attack, the junction was closed to traffic.The junction has been the scene of several stabbing, shooting, and car-ramming attacks.Officials have feared a resurgence of a wave of stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks with the onset of the fall Jewish holiday season, when religious tensions often spike. Last week, two people were shot to death and several were wounded by a Palestinian terrorist in a shooting attack at Jerusalem’s Ammunition Hill.October 2015 marked the start of several months of near-daily attacks during which at least 34 Israelis were killed in a spate of Palestinian attacks. French President Francois Hollande vowed to work with Germany to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to back an extension of the ceasefire in the Syrian city of Aleppo when the three leaders meet later Wednesday.“France will do everything it can to exert pressure, especially on supporters of the (Syrian) regime, such as the Russians, so that the ceasefire can be extended,” Hollande said before leaving for the meeting chaired by Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.The UN earlier on Wednesday dashed hopes that a prospective ceasefire in east Aleppo could provide humanitarian relief for besieged civilians, saying all sides needed to back an extended truce before aid convoys could roll.A plan to pause fighting for eight hours in rebel-held east Aleppo from 0500 GMT on Thursday has been announced by Assad regime ally Russia — with no word from the Damascus government that it intends to honor the deal.“Before we can do something really meaningful… we need assurances from all parties,” said Jens Laerke, spokesman for the United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA) in Geneva.“We need a minimum of 48 hours,” he added, stressing that Russia’s time-limited deal would not be sufficient for UN teams to mobilize.Aside from getting desperately needed supplies to east Aleppo’s estimated 250,000 civilians, the UN also wants to evacuate hundreds of people in urgent need of medical care.UN and Red Cross trucks packed with aid for east Aleppo have been stalled near the Turkish border for weeks, waiting for guarantees that they can safely make deliveries.Moscow has said Thursday’s proposed truce could give civilians an opportunity to flee the city.There has been a pause in air strikes over east Aleppo since Tuesday, a lull Russia says could allow residents time to prepare to leave.Syrian and Russian jets have been bombarding the area in a brutal offensive to retake the key city from rebel fighters.Washington has voiced skepticism over the prospects for Thurday’s truce.
