15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Most Israeli Jews say Jerusalem is a city divided-mar 6,16-the times of israel

The IDI Peace Index also asked respondents whether they agree with the statement that Jerusalem is a divided city.According to an abstract from the IDI, “A clear majority of Jewish Israelis (61%) thinks Jerusalem is divided into a western and eastern city.”In comparison, when the IDI first asked that question in 1999, 49% of respondents said the city was not divided, as opposed to 44% who said it was.The rate of Israelis who see the city as divided is much higher among left-wing Israelis: 88.5% and 85% among voters of the Zionist Union and Meretz, respectively.“Likud voters were split on the question (49% for each view),” the abstract says. “Some 47% of Arab Israelis think it is divided.”

French envoy to visit region to lay groundwork for peace confab-Despite Israeli opposition to conference, special envoy for peace initiative reportedly planning to hold talks in Ramallah and Tel Aviv-By Dov Lieber March 6, 2016, 12:41 pm-the times of israel

France’s special envoy for its peace initiative to renew Israeli-Palestinian peace talks will meet this week with officials in Ramallah and Tel Aviv, the Palestinian envoy to France said Saturday.Ambassador Salman al-Harfi confirmed to the Palestinian Ma’an news outlet that Pierre Vimont will meet with Israeli and Palestinian officials to discuss preparations for an international peace summit to renew stalled peace talks. The summit is scheduled to take place in June or July, despite Israeli complaints that peace negotiations should take the form of direct talks. Before visiting the region, Vimont will attend the The 5th Extraordinary Islamic Summit on Palestine and Al-Quds (Jerusalem), which begins in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Sunday. The summit, entitled “Uniting for a Just and Lasting Solution,” will also be attended by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.During his trip, the special envoy will also meet with Arab and international officials to discuss the framework for a meeting that will take place next April to set the agenda for the conference. The April meeting is for an international support group composed of world powers US, Russia, China, France and the UK, as well the “Arab quartet,” Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan and Egypt. Additionally, Brazil, Japan, Germany, South Africa and India will also attend the support meeting. Neither Israeli or Palestinian officials will attend the meeting in April.Harfi stressed that Israel had not yet confirmed its official stance on the conference, but that high international support will see the initiative move forward regardless of Jerusalem’s position, according to Ma’an.The Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to a request for a comment.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier dismissed France’s proposal. He said an ultimatum issued by Paris that it would recognize a Palestinian state if talks fail was “mystifying” and counterproductive, arguing that it gave Palestinians no incentive to compromise.Jerusalem has also maintained that direct talks are needed to reach an agreement. In January, then French foreign minister Laurent Fabius announced plans by Paris for an international conference to “bring about the two-state solution” to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Hamas rejected the French proposal last Wednesday.“The initiative is a bid to stop the ongoing Jerusalem Intifada and cancel the Palestinian rights in Jerusalem and the right of return,” said a statement from the lslamist group, which rules the Gaza Strip.Hamas’s statement followed remarks by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas last Tuesday, who voiced hope that the French initiative could lead to a solution reminiscent of the breakthrough talks on Iran’s nuclear deal.

Netanyahu rebuffs claims of rift with US ahead of Biden visit-Prime minister hails upcoming visit by vice president, says those who predicted collapse of ties with Washington were wrong-By AFP and Times of Israel staff March 6, 2016, 2:28 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Sunday of “strong” ties with the United States ahead of a visit by Vice President Joe Biden, despite deep disagreement over the nuclear accord with Iran.“This visit expresses the strong relations between Israel and our ally the US,” Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting.“There are those who have predicted the collapse of these relations. It is not so. The relationship is strong in all areas, including in the face of the challenges that we are standing together against in our region.”Biden is set to arrive on Tuesday for talks with Netanyahu as well as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.Israel and the United States have been seeking to move past deep disagreement over the Iran nuclear accord signed in July, which Netanyahu strongly opposed, and work out a new 10-year defense aid package. The current deal grants Israel some $3.1 billion annually, in addition to spending on other projects such as missile defense. At the cabinet meeting, Netanyahu also hailed Jerusalem’s expanding diplomatic relations with other countries, particularly as a leader in development and industry, welcoming Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to the country.Israel, Netanyahu said, is not only an “asset today in the fight against radical Islam,” but also “captures opportunities for the future, especially in technology.”Biden’s visit comes amid a five-month wave of violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories that has killed 29 Israelis and 181 Palestinians. Most of the Palestinians who died in the violence were killed while carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks, according to Israeli authorities; others were shot dead by Israeli forces during clashes or demonstrations. The White House said on Friday that Biden would not be pursuing any major new peace initiatives during his visit.US President Barack Obama has acknowledged that there will be no comprehensive agreement between Israelis and Palestinians before he leaves office in January 2017.His administration’s harsh criticism of Israeli settlement building in the West Bank has added to tensions between the two longstanding allies.Biden is also expected to discuss the fight against the Islamic State group with Netanyahu.

Report: Russia freezes delivery of S-300 missile defense to Iran-Kuwaiti paper cites unnamed source as saying Israel provided proof that Iran was giving advanced weapons to Hezbollah-By Dov Lieber and Times of Israel staff March 6, 2016, 5:05 pm

Russian President Vladmir Putin reportedly froze the transfer of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system to Iran after receiving evidence from Israel that Tehran had transferred advanced weapons to Hezbollah. The Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida published the unconfirmed report on Saturday, citing an unnamed source allegedly “familiar” with Putin. The source said that Putin scuppered the delivery after Israel showed that Iran had repeatedly attempted to transfer the SA-22 Greyhound short-range air defense system to the Lebanese-based terrorist group. The report also said that Russian pilots claimed to have detected the presence of advance anti-aircraft systems in Hezbollah-controlled territory straddling the Syria-Lebanon border.Israel, according to the report, has turned a blind eye to the Iranian-backed group’s possession of the Soviet-made SA-5 Gammon surface-to-air missile system, known also as the S-200.Russia and Iran signed a contract for the delivery of five S-300 batteries in 2007. But in autumn 2010, Russia’s then-president Dmitry Medvedev banned the supply of the systems to Tehran amid escalating global sanctions against Iran’s nuclear program. The contract, worth more than $800 million, was annulled and the advance payment returned to the Iranians.Iran filed a $4 billion lawsuit in the Court of Arbitration in Geneva over breach of the contract. According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, Moscow persuaded Tehran to withdraw the lawsuit after “long and tough negotiations.”In April 2015, shortly after the announcement of the Lausanne outline for the nuclear deal between world powers and Iran, Putin lifted the ban on S-300 deliveries to Tehran, over American and Israeli objections. In August, Iran and Russia announced that the system would be delivered by the end of the year, with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov saying at the time that “just technical details” remained to be agreed upon.Iranian media has repeatedly reported on the ostensibly imminent arrival of the batteries.

Palestinian media watchdog gets kicked off YouTube-Israeli group PMW protests termination that came after it uploaded PA television program urging ‘war’ to ‘destroy the Zionist’s soul’-By Times of Israel staff March 6, 2016, 6:35 pm

An Israeli media watchdog that reports on Palestinian incitement has seen its YouTube channel terminated for allegedly violating the video-sharing site’s “terms of service.”The account contained “nearly all” of the group’s published videos, Palestinian Media Watch said in a statement Sunday.“It is outrageous that YouTube closed PMW’s account, which is a blow to the war on terror,” the group added. “This is particularly dangerous now while Israel is fighting a war against Palestinian terror. PMW documentation on PMW’s YouTube account shows the PA and Fatah leaders’ support and promotion of the terror.”It is not immediately clear what led to the termination. PMW faces opposition online among pro-Palestinian activists who accuse it of being a pro-Israel advocacy group. YouTube’s terms of service include a prohibition on hate speech. The termination followed PMW’s Thursday publication of its latest video gleaned from Palestinian media, which shows a young girl on an official Palestinian Authority television program called “Children’s Talk” reciting a poem calling for “war that will smash the oppressor and destroy the Zionist’s soul.”“PMW’s exposure of Palestinian incitement and hate speech is recognized and used by parliaments and governments around the world,” the group said.“On Friday, a 25-minute debate took place in Swedish Parliament in which the PA’s support for the current terror was discussed, and the proof was based entirely on PMW documentation – most of which is no longer accessible on PMW’s YouTube account.”The group, based in Jerusalem, urged YouTube, which is owned by tech giant Google, to “immediately reinstate” its account.

Under Egypt’s nose, Hamas boosts cooperation with IS in Sinai-The Gaza terror group’s armed wing is digging tunnels in broad daylight to smuggle in Islamic State jihadists for medical care-By Avi Issacharoff March 6, 2016, 8:36 am-the times of israel

The Egyptian soldiers stationed on the border of the Gaza Strip have encountered this sight more than once in the past few weeks: Hamas-owned bulldozers and tractors appear and begin excavations on the border with the Sinai Peninsula.Despite promises to Cairo that Hamas is not engaged in the smuggling trade with the Islamic State’s Sinai affiliate, the bulldozers are digging tunnels in broad daylight, to the astonishment of the Egyptians, to boost the smuggling from and to Sinai that has recently been compromised. These bulldozers approach the border, and then abruptly disappear underground, according to sources in the Gaza Strip. Several seconds later, they exit the tunnels, loaded with dirt, and unload it not far from the excavation site.Even if Cairo gave the workers the benefit of the doubt and thought they could be working without the knowledge of Hamas, the sight of them taking “coffee breaks” at Hamas security positions, right in front of the Egyptian soldiers’ eyes, dispels any notion that the Strip’s rulers aren’t behind what’s going on.All this is taking place, despite the repeated denials by Hamas officials in the past few months that they are cooperating with or have secret ties with the Islamic State in Sinai.Time and again, they have claimed that their organization upholds the Egyptian national interest and is not enabling smuggling from Sinai to Gaza and back via the tunnel network.Yet the heavy digging shows the cooperation between the Gaza terror group and the IS Sinai group is seemingly only getting stronger. Hamas continues to dig tunnels into Sinai, using its heavy machinery. At the same time, the Sinai branch of the Islamic State and Hamas are trying to build a permanent and organized channel to evacuate wounded IS fighters into Gaza. This is on top of sending Gazan fighters to Sinai, as was recently reported by The Times of Israel.Sources in the Gaza Strip said that last week, one of the Islamic State’s primary smugglers in Sinai, Ibrahim Abu al-Kariya, a Bedouin resident of Sinai, visited the Strip. His goal was to meet with senior officials in Hamas’s armed wing to facilitate the evacuations of the wounded, through the tunnels, in a more orderly fashion. The IS fighters do not have access to medical care in the peninsula, since the Egyptian government and security forces control the hospitals, hence their need for hospitalization in Gaza.Hamas’s military wing, under the leadership of Muhammed Deif and Yahya Sinwar, accompany the IS arrivals from the moment they enter the Strip, hospitalize them under assumed identities, and take care of their every need. Moreover, al-Kariya coordinates the transfer of fighters – most of whom identify with Salafists, but at least some of whom were Hamas fighters until recently. In the past month, two former Hamas members went from the Strip to Sinai: Mohammed Sami and Mahmoud Zinet. The two are allegedly aligned with the Salafists, such that Hamas can renounce them if need be. Yet they went to Sinai with their former commanders’ knowledge.Al-Kariya is responsible for smuggling weapons into the Gaza Strip, and in exchange, he receives money, weapons manufactured in Gaza, and the military know-how of those former Hamas fighters who went to fight in Sinai. Hamas is fully aware of this phenomenon, according to the sources in Gaza, and they view the cooperation with the jihadists as critical to their interests. This is in stark contrast to the view of the political wing, which opposes it and demanded that the this collaboration be ended.Even as Hamas is upping excavation efforts, the scope of smuggling operations has dropped, thanks to Egyptian efforts to stymie the transfer of goods and people between the Strip and Sinai. But every so often, Hamas manages to operate a tunnel or several, primarily in the area south of the Rafah crossing, closer to the triangular border with Israel.

Police, protesters scuffle in Jerusalem after Arab woman arrested-Protest of Muslim women at Damascus Gate turns violent; no injuries reported-By Judah Ari Gross March 6, 2016, 2:36 pm-the times of israel

An Arab woman was arrested outside of Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, sparking low-level clashes between bystanders and police. There were no reports of injuries in the incident at the heavily guarded Damascus Gate.Police said there was “procession of Muslim women” protesting at the site when cops approached a woman to arrest her.A police spokesperson said the suspect then entered a store to avoid arrest, as a crowd at the site began throwing rocks at the policemen. Police originally said the woman had thrown stones, and later maintained they were investigating whether that was the case.Police subsequently dispersed the crowd. The woman who was arrested was a member of the all-female Murabitat group, known for opposing Jewish presence on the Temple Mount, by shouting “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”) at visitors, and sometimes resorting to physical assaults. The Prime Minister’s Office describes the group as a “salaried group of activists aimed at initiating provocations on the Temple Mount.”The Damascus Gate area, the main entrance to the Muslim Quarter of the Old City in Jerusalem, has been the site of dozens of Palestinian attacks on Jews in recent months.Police have stepped up security there, including searching those coming in and out of the gate — the main entrance into the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.Last month, policewoman Hadar Cohen, 19, was killed and a colleague was seriously injured after three Palestinians shot and stabbed them in the same area.Twenty-nine Israelis and three foreign nationals have been killed in a wave of Palestinian terrorism and violence since October. Over 170 Palestinians have also been killed — some two-thirds of them while attacking Israelis, and the rest during clashes with troops — according to the Israeli army.Lee Gancman contributed to this report.

Justice minister cleared over meeting with family of Duma suspect-Ethics Committee rejects complaint against Ayelet Shaked for her encounter with mother of Jewish minor suspected of terrorism-By Tamar Pileggi March 6, 2016, 6:16 pm-the times of israel

The Knesset Ethics Committee on Sunday dismissed a complaint against Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked for meeting with family members of a suspected Jewish terrorist charged with a deadly arson attack on a Palestinian home in the West Bank last year.A spokesperson from Shaked’s office confirmed to The Times of Israel that the meeting with the underage suspect’s family — raised in a complaint by opposition Meretz MK Tamar Zandberg — was not considered a breach of ethics.New York-based Jewish newspaper The Forward reported in late December that Shaked met the week before with the mother of the American-Israeli minor suspected of acting as an accomplice in the July 2015 terror attack that killed three members of the Dawabsha family. The Forward said the meeting took place after the suspect, whose name is barred from publication in Israel due to his age, complained that he had been tortured by the Shin Bet security service during his interrogation. The suspect’s lawyer, Adi Kedar from the Honenu organization, which mainly handles cases of Israelis accused of extremist crimes, was also present at the meeting, the report said. The decision comes weeks after the Ethics Committee suspended three Arab MKs for meeting with the families of Palestinian terrorists on February 2.In recent weeks, 21-year-old Amiram Ben-Uliel, the main suspect in the Duma case, also alleged the Shin Bet used torture and abuse to extract a confession out of him.Ben-Uliel and the unnamed minor were indicted in early January in the firebomb attack. The attack caused the immediate death of toddler Ali and the deaths in the following weeks of parents Riham and Saad. Five-year-old Ahmed Dawabsha, Ali’s brother, remains hospitalized in Israel with severe burns, and faces a long rehabilitation.Ben-Uliel was indicted for murder; the minor, who is not alleged to have directly participated in the fire-bombing, was charged as an accomplice. The indictments marked a key breakthrough in the case, which shocked Israelis and led to unprecedented measures against Jewish terror suspects, including a cabinet vote to extend to Israeli citizens counterterrorism practices such as detention without trial.Politicians across almost the entire political spectrum, including Shaked, backed the Shin Bet, which they said acted in accordance with Israeli law.“The Shin Bet has acted within the framework of the law, accompanied by court orders,” Shaked said in December. “Some of the stories [of unnecessary force] spread in recent days have no connection to reality.Ben-Uliel’s testimony, along with the allegations of abuse, marks the likely central argument of the defense in his trial, namely, that his confession was inadmissible as it was obtained under torture.According to a recent report on Israel’s Channel 2 television, a source close to the investigation said Ben-Uliel’s testimony and reenactment at the scene of the crime included a great many details that were never made public, and could only have been known to those who were there.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

France looks to Egypt to push peace bid-Cairo welcomes Paris initiative but says details must be clarified first-By Times of Israel staff and Agencies March 3, 2016, 10:13 pm

A spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Thursday that France is seeking help from Egypt to advance an initiative to renew Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.“There is no doubt that Egypt welcomes the French thought,” Abu Zeid said of his country’s position toward the French initiative. “However, there is still a need to review the details, to see how we can contribute to the conference for a new push of the peace process, and to address the key challenges facing the Palestinian issue.”In January, then French foreign minister Laurent Fabius announced plans by Paris for an international conference to “bring about the two-state solution” to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.France said that it would recognize a Palestinian state if fresh negotiation efforts failed to yield results.Hamas on Wednesday rejected the proposal.“The initiative is a bid to stop the ongoing Jerusalem intifada and cancel the Palestinian rights in Jerusalem and the right of return,” said a statement from the lslamist group, which rules the Gaza Strip.Hamas’s statement followed remarks by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday. He had voiced hope that the French initiative could lead to a solution reminiscent of the breakthrough talks on Iran’s nuclear deal. When the French initiative was first floated, only the PA expressed hope in the project. The announcement by Fabius in January was immediately followed by rejections from Israeli officials.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the initiative as “mystifying” and counterproductive, arguing that it gives Palestinians no incentive to compromise.

US, Israeli military chiefs stress cooperation to tackle challenges-Dunford’s second visit to the Jewish state in six months demonstrates the importance the relationship, he says-By Judah Ari Gross March 3, 2016, 6:09 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Strong ties between Israel and US will be needed to confront the “instability in the region,” according to Defense Minster Moshe Ya’alon and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., who met in Tel Aviv on Thursday.“The thing that gives me confidence that we’ll actually be able to deal with these challenges is that we have partners and allies to help us,” Dunford told Ya’alon. It is the US general’s second official visit to Israel since taking his post in October. During that visit, Gen. Dunford, US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro and US military officials also met with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and additional representatives of Israel’s defense community. This visit comes on the heels of Ya’alon’s announcement that a new 10-year military aid package from Washington is set to be finalized “in the coming weeks.”Dunford arrived in Israel early Thursday morning after a two-day visit to Afghanistan, where he attended the change of command ceremony for US and NATO forces in the country. This visit also coincides with the ongoing Juniper Cobra exercise, a large-scale joint Israeli-US missile defense drill that takes place every two years. The exercise is meant to prepare the two militaries for the threat of a missile attack, as well as allowing the armies to learn how to better work together-“This is your second trip in a very short time. Your visit now, including your visit to the Juniper Cobra exercise, which we are managing together, is another demonstration of the depth of the relationship between our armed forces and intelligence agencies,” Ya’alon said during their meeting in his office in the Defense Ministry’s headquarters.Dunford’s trip to Tel Aviv in mid-October 2015 was also his first official visit to a foreign country in his position, which he took over from Martin Dempsey on October 1.“My first visit overseas was [to Israel], and I appreciate the warm welcome I had. This is my second [visit] in a short period of time, and I think that reflects what you said — how important this relationship is,” Dunford told Ya’alon during their meeting.“The relationship between our two countries is about much more than just the military to military relationship, but I believe that’s one of the foundational elements,” he added. On Wednesday, officials confirmed US Vice President Joe Biden will visit Israel next week for high-level talks. The discussions are expected to include negotiations over the defense aid package, which officials have suggested may be finalized during a possible trip to the US by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later this month.Israel and the United States have been seeking to move past deep disagreement over the Iran nuclear accord, which Netanyahu strongly opposed, and work out a new long-term defense aid package for Israel that aims to preserve its qualitative military edge in the region. The US has either jointly developed or financed all three tiers in Israel’s missile defense program — Iron Dome (short-range missile interceptor), David’s Sling (medium range) and Arrow (long range).US military aid to Israel currently stands at $3 billion annually, a sum that, according to reports, Israel wants to up to $5 billion annually.Though some Israeli officials have reportedly threatened to hold out until US President Barack Obama leaves office in the hopes of securing a better deal, the package is expected to be finalized when Netanyahu visits the US later this month. As part of the new agreement, Israel in November was said to have completed its “shopping list” of desired American military materiel, which reportedly includes a request for V-22 Ospreys, planes believed capable of reaching Iran.Israel reportedly sought the V22s from the US in 2012 when contemplating a strike on Iran’s Fordo enrichment facility, but later decided not to purchase due to budgetary restraints.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Trump hits back at ‘disaster candidate’ Mitt Romney-Former presidential nominee claims billionaire frontrunner unfit for the job; Trump: ‘He was begging me’ to endorse him in 2012-By Raoul Wootliff March 3, 2016, 10:38 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Donald Trump hit back Thursday at criticism leveled against him by former Republican nominee Mitt Romney hours earlier, saying Romney had “begged” Trump to endorse him when he was running for president in 2012.Trump claimed he could have said, “‘Mitt, drop to your knees.’ He would have dropped to his knees.”Speaking at a campaign rally in Portland, Maine ahead of Saturday’s Republican caucus there, Trump repeatedly said of Romney, “He was begging me.”The barbs came in response to a speech delivered by Romney earlier Thursday, in which the former Massachusetts governor warned Republicans that Trump was a “phony,” a misogynist and dangerous..@realDonaldTrump says @MittRomney was begging him for an endorsement in 2012 pic.twitter.com/vfpPoJ2KLG-— POLITICO (@politico) March 3, 2016-In a nationally broadcast speech at the University of Utah, Romney said that the prospects for a safe future will be “greatly diminished” if Trump is to become the Republican nominee for president. He warned the packed auditorium that any of the other GOP candidates would be a better alternative to the billionaire businessman.“The only serious policy proposals that deal with the broad range of national challenges we confront today, come from Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and John Kasich,” Romney said of Trump’s GOP rivals. “One of these men should be our nominee.”In his response, Trump said that Romney proved he was a “choke artist” and a “disaster candidate” when he lost the 2012 presidential race to Barack Obama, and that Romney had declined to run a third time this year because he was afraid of Trump. In a low blow, Trump added that he’s made considerably more money than Romney in his string of “Trump”-branded businesses.“I have a store worth more money than Mitt,” he said, likely referring to the the Gucci store on 5th Ave, the retail space of which is estimated as exceeding $300 million-In 2012, Romney’s net worth was estimated at $190–250 million. On the offensive following his speech and utilizing his fist major media coverage since losing the presidential race to Obama, Romney tweeted that if Trump had used the language and tone he does today in 2012, he would not have sought his endorsement. If Trump had said 4 years ago the things he says today about the KKK, Muslims, Mexicans, disabled, I would NOT have accepted his endorsement-— Mitt Romney (@MittRomney) March 3, 2016-The back-and-forth comes as Republican candidates prepared for the first post-Super Tuesday debate, scheduled for Thursday in Detroit, with Trump coming under increasing pressure from his party as he fights for the majority of delegates needed to win the nomination.Four years ago, the two men stood side by side in Las Vegas, with Trump saying it was a “real honor and privilege” to endorse Romney’s White House bid. Mitt Romney says ‘phony’ Trump unfit for presidency-Former republican nominee lambasts billionaire businessman as party leaders scramble to put an end to his winning streak-By Steve Peoples and BRADY McCOMBS March 3, 2016, 7:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) — Speaking at the University of Utah, Romney said Thursday that the prospects for a safe future are “greatly diminished” if Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee for president. “One of these men should be our nominee.”Romney is charging into the increasingly divisive White House race with a verbal lashing of Donald Trump and a plea for fellow Republicans to shun the front-runner for the good of country and party.“His is not the temperament of a stable, thoughtful leader. His imagination must not be married to real power,” Romney said.Romney branded Trump as “a phony, a fraud” whose “promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University” in his speech.Earlier Thursday, Trump dismissed Romney as “a stiff” who “didn’t know what he was doing” as the party’s candidate in 2012 and blew a chance to beat President Barack Obama. “People are energized by what I’m saying” in the campaign and turning out in remarkable numbers to vote, Trump told NBC’s “Today.”The back-and-forth comes as Republican candidates prepared for the first post-Super Tuesday debate, scheduled for Thursday in Detroit, with Trump coming under increasing pressure from his party as he fights for the majority of delegates needed to win the nomination.Thursday’s condemnation and counter was coming four years after the two men stood side by side in Las Vegas, with Trump saying it was a “real honor and privilege” to endorse Romney’s White House bid. Accepting, Romney said it was a “delight” to have Trump on his side and praised him for ability to “understand how our economy works and to create jobs for the American people.”Panicked GOP leaders say they still have options for preventing Trump from winning the GOP nomination — just not many good ones.Romney also said that a Trump nomination at the party’s convention in Cleveland in July would enable Democrat Hillary Clinton to win the presidency. He contended that Trump “has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president.”Romney’s involvement comes as party elites pore over complicated delegate math, outlining hazy scenarios for a contested convention and even flirting with the long-shot prospect of a third party option.Giving Romney the back of his hand, Trump turned his sights on the general election. His campaign reached out to House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office to arrange a conversation between the two men, and urged Republican leaders to view his candidacy as a chance to expand the party.Trump padded his lead with victories in seven Super Tuesday contests, with Texas Senator Ted Cruz claiming three states and Florida Senator Marco Rubio picking up his first victory of the 2016 race.Despite Trump’s strong night, he was not yet on track to claim the nomination before the party’s national gathering in July, according to an Associated Press delegate count. He has won 46 percent of the delegates awarded so far, and he would have to increase that to 51 percent in the remaining primaries.GOP strategists cast March 15 as the last opportunity to stop Trump through the normal path of winning states and collecting delegates. A win for Rubio in his home state of Florida would raise questions about Trump’s strength, as could a win for Kasich, Ohio’s governor, on his home turf. The candidates have a high-profile opportunity to make their case to voters in Thursday’s Fox News debate. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson all but ended his bid Wednesday, saying he would skip the debate and declaring he did “not see a political path forward.”The GOP mayhem contrasted sharply with a clearer picture on the Democratic side, where Hillary Clinton was drawing broad support from voters and her party’s leaders. Rival Senator Bernie Sanders vowed to keep up the fight, though his path to the nomination has become exceedingly narrow.Romney argues that Trump’s “domestic policies would lead to recession. His foreign policies would make America and the world less safe,” Romney says. “And his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.”The Associated Press has asked Republican governors and senators if they would support Trump if he becomes the party’s nominee. Of the 59 respondents, slightly fewer than half could not commit to backing him in November. One long-shot idea rumbling through power corridors in Washington was the prospect of a late third-party candidate to represent more mainstream conservatives. Former Texas Governor Rick Perry has been approached by “a mixture of people” about being part of a third-party bid, according to Jeff Miller, who managed Perry’s failed GOP presidential campaign. But Miller said Perry found the idea “ludicrous.”

Regulator seeks to curtail bankers’ ‘extravagant’ salaries-Bank Leumi boss made over $2 million in 2015, compared to average Israeli wage of $30,000-By Times of Israel staff March 3, 2016, 11:55 pm

In a new measure aimed at increasing transparency and competition in the financial sector, Bank of Israel Supervisor Hedva Ber on Thursday said she would push legislation aimed at curtailing the “extravagant” paychecks of banking tycoons.“The current salary standards have a negative impact on the public’s trust in the banks,” Ber said at finance conference in Tel Aviv, according to a report in the Globes business daily.According to the Globes report, Bank Leumi CEO Rakefet Russak-Aminoach took home NIS 8.12 million ($2.1 m) in 2015, while chairman David Brodet took home NIS 5.82 ($1.5 m).A 2013 Bank of Israel study found that 16 percent of bank employees (or over 7,000 people) earned between NIS 45,000 ($11,500) and NIS 80,000 ($21,000) a month. In contrast, the average monthly wage in Israel stood at NIS 9,688 ($2,500) as of November of last year, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics.According to Ber, the lack of competition in the industry and high salary costs — which amount to some NIS 18 billion annually — stand in the way of reducing the fees and interest rates that banks charge customers for services. At the conference, Ber said she intends to push for Knesset legislation that would ensure “appropriate” compensation for senior bankers, in accordance with a directive issued by the regulatory body last year.Since her appointment to the post last June, Ber has spearheaded a number of measures aimed at reforming consumer banking. In January, the Bank of Israel announced banks would be required to issue standardized ID cards to customers so they can easily read their bank balance, expenses and loan information. Since the ID cards are to have a standardized format, the cards will also make it easier for customers to compare competing offers by other banks side-by-side.The central bank also recently issued directives to banks requesting they review accounts held by their elderly or handicapped customers to make sure they were not paying excessive bank fees.Last year, Bank of Israel Governor Karnit Flug and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon agreed to form a committee headed by former antitrust commissioner Dror Strum, to explore ways to inject competition into Israel’s consumer banking.

Where Solomon mined, 3,000-year-old ‘fashion collection’ unearthed-Fabrics with ‘complex designs and beautiful dyes,’ preserved by uniquely arid conditions, found in Timna in southern Israel-By Raoul Wootliff February 24, 2016, 6:57 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Archaeologists have unearthed an extensive fabric collection in the south of Israel dating back some 3,000 years to the biblical era of King David and Solomon, Tel Aviv University said Wednesday. The materials were uncovered in the Timna copper mines in the Arava Valley by an Tel Aviv University excavation team led by Dr. Erez Ben-Yosef. The finds are the first discovery of textiles dating from the era and include cloth of diverse color, design and origin, the archaeologists said.“No textiles (from this period) have ever been found at excavation sites like Jerusalem, Megiddo and Hazor, so this provides a unique window into an entire aspect of life from which we’ve never had physical evidence before,” Ben-Yosef said. “We found fragments of textiles that originated from bags, clothing, tents, ropes and cords.”The pieces of fabric, some only 5 x 5 centimeters in size, vary in color, weaving technique and ornamentation, the university said in a press release.“Some of these fabrics resemble textiles only known from the Roman era,” said Dr. Orit Shamir, a senior researcher at the Israel Antiquities Authority, who led the study of the fabrics themselves. The Timna Valley — now a national park — was a copper production district with thousands of mines and dozens of smelting sites, said by some to have been active during the reign of King Solomon. Fragments of furnaces, clothing, fabrics and rope and a number of food fragments were unearthed in a 2013 dig at the site whose findings were publicized Wednesday. The artifacts were dated to the 10th century BCE — the time during which, according to the bible, King Solomon ruled ancient Israel. Also found from the same period — as confirmed by radiocarbon dating — were unprecedented quantities of seeds from the Biblical “Seven Species” (the two grains and five fruits considered unique products of the Land of Israel). The mines are believed to have been operated by the semi-nomadic early Edomites, and the discoveries also offer insight into their complex society, said Ben-Yosef.“The wide variety of fabrics also provides new and important information about the Edomites, who, according to the Bible, warred with the Kingdom of Israel,” Ben-Yosef went on. “We found simply woven, elaborately decorated fabrics worn by the upper echelon of their stratified society. Luxury grade fabric adorned the highly skilled, highly respected craftsmen managing the copper furnaces. They were responsible for smelting the copper, which was a very complicated process.”The materials found at the site underlined that the copper mines were the “silicon valley” of their day, the university said in a press release. “Copper was used to produce tools and weapons and was the most valuable resource in ancient societies,” it said. Producing it was a highly complex process. “Miners in ancient Timna may have been slaves or prisoners… but the act of smelting, of turning stone into metal, required an enormous amount of skill and organization.”Added Ben-Yosef: “The possession of copper was a source of great power, much as oil is today. If a person had the exceptional knowledge to ‘create copper,’ he was considered well-versed in an extremely sophisticated technology. He would have been considered magical or supernatural, and his social status would have reflected this.”Thus, food, water and textiles had to be transported long distances through the desert and into the valley to the mines to support the copper industry.“The latest discovery of fabrics, many of which were made far from Timna in specialized textile workshops, provides a glimpse into the trade practices and regional economy of the day,” the university said.“We found linen, which was not produced locally. It was most likely from the Jordan Valley or Northern Israel. The majority of the fabrics were made of sheep’s wool, a cloth that is seldom found in this ancient period,” said TAU masters student Vanessa Workman. “This tells us how developed and sophisticated both their textile craft and trade networks must have been.”

IS ‘on the rise’ among Arab Israelis, with 34 indicted to date-40 Israelis have left to fight with Islamic State, report says; terror group working relentlessly to encourage a major attack here-By Times of Israel staff March 3, 2016, 8:57 pm

A total of 34 Israeli Arabs have been indicted for offenses related to activities on behalf of Islamic State, a TV report said Thursday, adding that the terror group was steadily growing in popularity in Israel. The Channel 10 report said Islamic State has been working relentlessly to encourage a major terrorist attack in Israel. It said IS has some 100 activists in Israel at present. The report referenced the January 1, 2016 killings of three Israelis in Tel Aviv by Israeli Arab Nashat Milhem, and a stabbing attack the same month by a Sudanese migrant in Israel, as having been inspired by Islamic State. It also said 40 Israeli Arabs have left Israel to join up with Islamic State forces, largely traveling via Turkey. Ten Palestinians are currently “missing” from Palestinian Authority areas and believed to have joined up with IS, it added. The TV report came on the same day that the Shin Bet security agency released details of an alleged plot by two Arab Israelis inspired by the Islamic State to attack IDF soldiers.Bahaa Eldin Ziad Hasan Masarwa, 19, and Ahmad Nabil Ahmad Ahmad, 21, were arrested in a joint operation by the Shin Bet and Israel Police earlier this year.During their interrogations, the two confessed to having been inspired by IS, the security service said.“Over the past few months the two began praying at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on a weekly basis, and during one of their trips the two decided to carry out a shooting attack against security forces,” the Shin Bet said in a statement. The pair were from northern Israeli cities, Masarwa from Yafia and Ahmad from Nazareth. The two planned to shoot IDF soldiers in the nearby Israeli city of Afula and had begun collecting money in order to purchase a pistol for the attack, the Shin Bet said.In 2014, three residents of Yafia entered Syria through Turkey and joined the Islamic State.Masarwa and Ahmad were indicted in a Nazareth District Court for conspiracy to commit a crime and aiding the enemy during wartime. In addition, Masarwa has been charged with contacting a foreign agent and making contact with a terrorist organization.

Gazan accused of planning attacks in Ukraine, Israel-Palestinian indicted in plot to kidnap soldiers, attack Israeli tourists and provide weapons to ‘IS-affiliated’ Israeli Arabs-By Raoul Wootliff March 3, 2016, 7:35 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A Palestinian man from the the Gaza Strip stands accused of planning a series of terror attacks against Israelis, both in the country and abroad. The man was named as 31-year-old Sami Hamied, a Gaza native who has been living in Ukraine since 2010 and was arrested in January while trying to enter Israel from Jordan in an attempt to make his way to Gaza.A gag order on the details of the case was lifted with the filing of the indictment Thursday at the Beersheba District Court.According to the indictment, Hamied planned to attack Israeli tourists visiting Ukraine and assisted Hamas in preparations for attacks in Israel. One plot, which was not acted on, involved luring Israeli IDF officers into the Sinai using a prostitute as “bait.” According to the plan, Hamas-affiliated militants in the peninsula would kidnap the officers and transfer them to Gaza.Hamied is said to have collected information on Israeli tourist groups traveling to the Ukrainian city of Odessa and allegedly planned to carry out a shooting or bombing attack on a tour bus.The indictment also mentioned him assisting Hamas during the 2008-9 Gaza war, also known as Operation Cast Lead, and attempting to provide weapons to ‘Islamic State-affiliated’ Israeli Arabs. He has been indicted on several counts of terror activities, spying and falsifying documents.Arab media reported that Sami Hamied is the brother of Salam Hamied, a high-ranking commander in the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.

Hamas man killed as Gaza tunnel collapses-Group blames Israel for cave-in, the seventh in recent months, amid redoubled efforts to dig across the border-By Times of Israel staff March 3, 2016, 8:28 pm

A tunnel being dug in Gaza under the aegis of the ruling Hamas group collapsed on Thursday, killing a member of the organization’s military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas said. The dead man was named as Muhammad Musa al Astal from Khan Younis. The tunnel caved in near the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades confirmed. It was the latest in a spate of such collapses. Only five days ago, another tunnel caved in near the Zeitoun neighborhood in the eastern part of the Strip, injuring five members of Hamas’s military wing.Members of Hamas accused Israel of collapsing the tunnel, saying they had seen soldiers on the Gaza border using liquid explosives and “causing small earthquakes” to bring down tunnels dug by the group. The past two months have seen seven tunnels collapse, most of them in the Khan Younis area, and two in Zeitoun.Around a month ago, the 23-year-old nephew of Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar was killed in a tunnel accident.Just before that, a tunnel collapsed in the area of Jabalia, in the north of the Palestinian enclave, after heavy rain and floods, killing seven excavators and injuring others.A system of tunnels has been dug by Hamas into Israel in order to facilitate cross-border attacks. During the 2014 Israel-Hamas war, Palestinian gunmen emerged from tunnels on several occasions to ambush IDF soldiers, killing several. Israel said it destroyed more than 30 tunnels during the 50-day conflict, about one-third of which extended beneath the Gaza border into Israel. Officials say Hamas has redoubled its efforts to dig across the border into Israel in recent months.Israel has spent over NIS one billion (some $250 million) since 2004 in attempts to thwart tunneling under the border, an Israeli TV report said last month. The money has gone toward developing technology to discover the locations of such tunnels and unspecified “operational efforts,” Channel 2 news said. Many other tunnels are used to smuggle goods and weapons in and out of the Strip through Rafah on the Egyptian border, in the face of Israel and Egypt’s naval blockade of the enclave and their strict supervision of land borders with the Strip.Egypt has created a buffer zone in the northern Sinai Peninsula, which it controls, destroying hundreds of tunnels leading in and out of the southern part of the Strip, sometimes by pumping sea water in. That border has remained largely closed since the overthrow of Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi of the Hamas-allied Muslim Brotherhood.

US man arrested for exporting nuclear-linked metals to Iran-Erdal Kuyumcu, 44, could face up to 20 years in jail and $1 million fine for allegedly sending cobalt-nickel metallic powder to Iran-By AFP March 2, 2016, 1:17 am-the times of israel

Authorities Tuesday arrested a US man charged with exporting a potentially dangerous metallic powder to Iran, which is used for space and nuclear activities, including missile production, the Department of Justice said.Erdal Kuyumcu, 44, was to appear in court in New York later in the day, on charges that carry up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.As the CEO of Global Metallurgy, he allegedly exported cobalt-nickel metallic powder to Iran twice, shipping it first through an intermediary in Turkey in order to hide its final destination, the Department of Justice said in a statement. He attempted to send a total of more than a thousand pounds (a half ton) of the substance.Under US law, exporting such a powder to Iran is illegal without a license from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).“Those who seek to evade the scrutiny of the regulatory agencies by operating in the shadows present a danger to our national security and our allies abroad,” said US Attorney Robert Capers of the Eastern District of New York.

Ya’alon: Syrian regime used chemical weapons during truce-Defense minister says government forces ‘dropped barrels of chlorine on civilians’ this week-By Times of Israel staff and AFP March 1, 2016, 9:51 pm

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Tuesday Syrian government forces used chemical weapons against civilians this week in a particularly egregious violation of the ceasefire.“The Syrians used military grade chemical weapons and lately have been using materials, chlorine, against civilians, including in these very days, after the supposed ceasefire, dropping barrels of chlorine on civilians,” he said, without providing further details, according to Reuters.Ya’alon made the comments during an address at a conference hosted by the New Tech military and aviation group in Airport City, near Tel Aviv. The minister’s claims came as Syrian President Bashar Assad pledged to do his part to guarantee the success of a shaky ceasefire that was largely holding into its fourth day.World powers have thrown their weight behind the landmark truce as a way to bring an end to Syria’s conflict, which began in 2011 with anti-government protests.Assad said the truce provided a “glimmer of hope” for Syria, where more than 270,000 people have been killed since the complex conflict erupted.“We will do our part so that the whole thing works,” Assad told German public broadcaster ARD, referring to the cessation of hostilities reached by the United States and Russia.“We have refrained ourselves from retaliating in order to give (a) chance for the agreement to survive. That’s what we can do, but at the end everything has a limit. It depends on the other side.”The president also offered a wide amnesty to opposition fighters if they agree to disarm.“The most important thing for me, legally and constitutionally… (is) that you’re not allowed, as a citizen, to hold machine-guns and hurt people or properties,” he said.“This is the only thing that we ask. We don’t ask for anything. As I said, we give them full amnesty.”The United Nations said the next round of peace talks would resume in Geneva on March 9, announcing a two-day postponement “to allow adequate time to address logistical and practical matters”.The ceasefire deal brokered by Moscow and Washington excludes territory held by the jihadist groups the Islamic State, also known as ISIL, and the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra. The two groups together control more than half of Syria.

EU approves $274 million in aid for Palestinians-Foreign affairs chief calls on Palestinian Authority to be ‘more transparent, more accountable, and more democratic’-By Times of Israel staff March 1, 2016, 9:17 pm

The European Commission announced Tuesday that it has approved a new assistance package for the Palestinian Authority worth $274.1 million. In a press release, the Commission said the aid was the first part of a 2016 package, $184 million of which is set to be funneled directly to the PA, with a focus on education and health services, support for hospitals in East Jerusalem, and assistance to poor families. The remaining $89 million will go to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in the Near East (UNRWA).The statement said a second package will be announced later in the year.“The European Union renews its concrete commitment to the Palestinians,” Federica Mogherini, the EU high representative for foreign affairs, said in a statement. “Through this package, the EU supports the daily lives of Palestinians in the fields of education and health, protecting the poorest families and also providing the Palestinian refugees with access to essential services. These are tangible steps on the ground that can improve the lives of Palestinian people.”Mogherini called on the PA to “become more transparent, more accountable and more democratic” and uphold human rights, which she said is a prerequisite for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state “living side by side, in peace and security, with the State of Israel and other neighbors.”While the press release refers to the Palestinian Authority as Palestine, it notes that the designation “shall not be construed as recognition of a State of Palestine and is without prejudice to the individual positions of the Member States on this issue.”

No education toward 2 states in Palestinian textbooks,’ report finds-Israel left off maps, Israeli cities said to be in Palestine, martyrdom praised, Holocaust not mentioned in over 70 PA textbooks for Grades 1-12, says Israel Radio journalist-By Dov Lieber March 1, 2016, 7:09 pm-the times of israel

Israel is routinely left off maps, Israeli cities are said to be in Palestine, martyrdom is celebrated, and there is not a single mention of the Holocaust in more than 70 official Palestinian Authority textbooks, Israel Radio reported Tuesday. The state radio’s Palestinian affairs correspondent, Gal Berger, said he looked over textbooks for grades 1-12 with a diverse range of subjects, including history, geography and Islamic studies, and found what he indicated was a systematic blurring out of Israel’s existence.“In the textbooks of the Palestinian Authority,” he said, “there is no education towards two states or a Palestinian state [alongside Israel] within ’67 lines.”In the Palestinian history books for grades 10-12, there are full chapters dedicated to World War II but no mention of the Holocaust, Berger reported. “For a student in this [Palestinian education] system,” said Berger, “it is as if the Holocaust never happened.”In his examination of the Islamic studies textbooks, Berger found excerpts that celebrated martyrdom, including a fourth grade textbook that invites the children to write about a Palestinian martyr of their choice. He posted a picture on his Twitter account from a page of a ninth grade textbook of Islamic studies, which he said constituted praise for martyrdom. The page begins with a Quranic verse which instructs Muslims to kill or imprison nonbelievers. If a Muslim should die in the process, the verse says, “God will not send away their works…and (will) admit them into paradise.” The textbook’s interpretation of the verse, Berger said, states that the martyrs “will be given the highest place in paradise with the prophets and messengers.”The issue of paradise and the division between believers (Muslims) and nonbelievers permeates the textbooks, according to Berger. For example, in one textbook, it is written that Palestine will be the frontline between Muslims and infidels. The erasure of Israel’s physical existence begins early, with cartoons in first grade textbooks showing stores in Palestine — among them a pharmacy in Safed, a supermarket in Haifa and a candy store in Beersheba, Berger reported. (All three cities are in Israel.) It “continues like this through the different grades,” Berger noted.Berger also cited a reading comprehension article in a seventh grade geography textbook, in which such Israeli cities as Haifa, Beersheba, Jaffa, Safed, Ashdod and Ashkelon are said to be famous cities of Palestine. In a picture from textbook on his Twitter feed, Berger also showed a true-or-false question which stated: “The surface area of Palestine is 27,027 square kilometers.” The answer, “true,” has Palestine subsuming Israel completely.Incitement from within the Palestinian Authority education system is often cited, notably by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as a cause for the current wave of Palestinian terror and violence against Israel. Berger said Tuesday he checked the books to see if there was a basis to this claim. “It’s important how you define what you mean by incitement,” he said, in presenting his findings on Israel Radio on Tuesday. “Do the textbooks openly call for attacks against Israelis or Jews? You won’t find that,” he said. However, Berger said, the textbooks lay an ideological foundation that can lead a young Palestinian to carry out an attack.Quoting possibly incendiary Quranic verses verbatim is not the problem, he argued. Rather, he said, the incitement originates in the state-sanctioned interpretation of the verse in which martyrs are told they will go to paradise.Ashraf al-Ajami, a political commentator and former Palestinian minister for prisoner affairs, countered that maps in Israel do not designate the borders of the state, or mark a distinction between sovereign Israeli territory and areas captured in the 1967 war.“If you ask any kid in the West Bank what Palestine is, he will say the West Bank and the Gaza Strip” — not Israel — Ajami said in an Israel Radio interview.Ajami also said that all the textbooks are read over by representatives of the European Union who look for any signs of incitement.Likud Minister without Portfolio Ofir Akunis told Israel Radio that he was “absolutely certain” of a link between PA education and the current wave of attacks, and that “not a day goes by” without the Palestinian Authority inciting against Israel.

Jordanian security forces clash with gunmen near Syria border-Three troops injured in firefight with ‘outlaws’ in the northern city of Irbid-By AP and AFP March 2, 2016, 12:19 am-the times of israel

Jordanian troops exchanged fire with armed men during arrest raids in the northern city of Irbid on Tuesday, including one group holed up in a building, security officials said.Jordan’s Public Security Directorate referred to those being targeted in the raids as “outlaws” but did not elaborate. The directorate reported there were deaths among the gunmen but did not say how many, and that three members of the security forces were hurt. The statement said clashes began earlier Tuesday and continued in the evening. The daily al-Ghad said more than 20 suspected militants were arrested in the operation.Jordanian media said the security forces were battling religious extremists.Amateur video posted online showed groups of men, apparently onlookers, standing in a street as heavy gunfire could be heard in the distance.Since last year, Jordan assumed a high-profile role in the US-led military campaign against the extremist Islamic State group which controls large areas of neighboring Iraq and Syria.Jordan has also cracked down domestically, with IS sympathizers, including those expressing support for the group in social media, facing several years in prison.

France razes Calais ‘Jungle’ migrant camp, sparking clashes-‘We have already seen prison and torture, this doesn’t scare us,’ says refugee as police dismantle tents-By Eric RANDOLPH March 1, 2016, 5:44 pm-the times of israel

CALAIS, France (AFP) — France was razing parts of the “Jungle” migrant camp for a second day Tuesday while thousands of refugees remained blocked in Greece as Europe struggled with the flood of desperate people at its borders. An overnight downpour left stranded refugees shivering in the mud on the Greek border with Macedonia as the UN said over 131,000 migrants had crossed the Mediterranean to reach Europe so far this year. The figure was more than the total number for the first five months of 2015 as Europe grapples with its biggest migration crisis since World War II which many fear poses a threat to very core of the European project. In the northern French port city of Calais, tensions were high as bulldozers continued dismantling the southern half of the Jungle camp, which has become a magnet for people hoping to reach Britain.Roving teams were trying to convince the inhabitants to leave of their own volition and move to better accommodation provided for them, but many fear it will take them further from their goal of reaching Britain, with clashes erupting on Monday.“We have already seen prison and torture, this doesn’t scare us,” a migrant told one of the teams. While the Jungle has become a cause celebre for activists, the crisis there pales in comparison to the situation along the Greek-Macedonian border where more than 7,000 people are stranded after Balkans states imposed a daily limit on the number of migrants allowed to enter.Increasingly desperate, some tried to force their way across the frontier on Monday but were tear gassed by Macedonian police, prompting a sharp rebuke from the EU, which said it was “not our idea of managing the crisis.”In a bid to ease some of the deep divisions which have emerged over the crisis, EU president Donald Tusk set off Tuesday on a tour which will take him to Vienna, the Balkan states and Turkey. At the Idomeni border camp in northern Greece, where thousands of refugees and are camped, an overnight downpour left their tents drenched and children coughing miserably. With Austria and Balkan states capping the numbers of migrants entering their territory, there has been a swift build-up along the border in northern Greece, with Athens warning that the total number of people “trapped” on its soil could reach up to 70,000 in March.“We have been waiting for six days,” said a Syrian woman called Farah as a van distributing canned food and long-life milk was quickly mobbed and emptied in minutes.“The food is not enough, everyone is lying to us and we are desperate,” added the 32-year-old, as children could be heard coughing and crying in nearby tents.German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country registered 1.1 million asylum seekers in 2015, lashed out at the border restrictions, saying they risked plunging debt-ridden Greece into refugee chaos.UN rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein denounced the growing border restrictions as “an act of cruelty” saying instead of receiving compassion, desperate refugees were facing a “rising roar of xenophobia.”And Eva Cosse of Human Rights Watch said trapping asylum seekers in Greece was “an unconscionable and short-sighted non-solution that is causing suffering and violence.”Despite the criticism, countries in the firing line were standing firm.“We cannot take in hundreds of thousands of people. We are not Germany’s waiting room,” Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann told Heute daily.“It cannot be that people are just waved through Greece, Macedonia and Croatia and that Austria does the EU’s job of sharing them around.”Back in northern France, operations to raze the southern half of the Calais camp were continuing, with officials saying it would affect between 800 and 1,000 people, although charities working there say it would affect more than 3,450 people, among them 300 unaccompanied children. The demolition comes ahead of talks on Thursday between French President Francois Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron. The fate of the camp has also played into fraught discussions about Britain’s possible exit from the European Union (EU).

Bill aims to outlaw sex between rabbis and their followers-Legislation seeks to prevent exploitation by spiritual leaders, similar to restrictions between therapists and patients-By Sue Surkes March 2, 2016, 1:34 am-the times of israel

Rabbis and other spiritual figures who use their influence to sexually exploit their followers could face the full weight of criminal law if a bill which was cleared for its first reading in the Knesset Tuesday enters the books.Passed for preliminary reading in January, the bill forms part of broader efforts to create a framework for dealing with cults in Israel and calls for up to three years imprisonment for offenders. But the wording will allow it to deal also with cases in which religious figures sexually exploit their followers. Activities would be deemed criminal should the authority figure exploit the “real psychological dependence” of his or her victim during or close to a period in which advice or guidance was given in one-on-one meetings. The proposed legislation, introduced by Meretz MK Michal Rozin and signed by lawmakers from across the spiritual spectrum, places encounters such as these on a par with sexual relations between a therapist and patient, which are illegal, the Hebrew daily Haaretz reported.“This is about psychological dependence, just as exists in a therapist-patient relationship,” Rozin said. “It’s the place of the legislature to determine that sexual relationships within the framework of such dependence cannot take place within the law and that they have to be prohibited by criminal law.”Liat Klein, legal adviser to the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel, which helped to put the draft bill together, said: “Rabbis and spiritual individuals create great dependence among those who turn to them, usually during distress or a crisis.”The police and prosecution services endeavored for years to prosecute cult leader Goel Ratzon, who presented himself as a spiritual guru, and was finally convicted in September of multiple sexual offenses, including rape, sodomy, sex with a minor, indecent assault and fraud.Ratzon, 64, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison and ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of shekels in restitution to his victims, is believed to have had up to 32 “wives” starting in 1991. He also reportedly fathered at least 49 children, with some media sources estimating that more than 60 children were involved in his cult.Prosecutors tried to create a legal precedent of “spiritual slavery” and argued that relationships, including sexual ones, with 12 women had to be seen within the context of Ratzon’s spiritual control which negated the womens’ ability to choose freely. The court acquitted Ratzon of sexual slavery and rejected the prosecution’s attempt to enshrine spiritual slavery as a precedent.According to the Israeli Center for Cult Victims, there are some 100 cults active in Israel, with 15,000-20,000 adults and 3,000 children in their ranks.

40% of Europe’s Jewish leaders say anti-Semitism a threat to Jewish life-But alienation from communal life, weakening status of Jewish organizations and demographic decline ranked as more serious threats-By JTA and Times of Israel staff March 1, 2016, 6:19 pm-the times of israel

In a survey among leaders of European Jewish communities, 40 percent of respondents maintained that anti-Semitism poses a serious threat to the future of Jewish life in their country. But the poll figures — published Monday — also showed that alienation of Jews from Jewish life (61%), weakness of Jewish organizations (55%) and demographic decline (51%) were ranked as more pressing issues. The results appeared in the Third Survey of European Jewish Leaders and Opinion Formers, which was published Monday by the International Center for Community Development of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. The survey is based on replies gathered last year from 314 respondents. The anti-Semitism fears are the highest recorded by JDC since it launched its first survey of this kind in 2008. That year, only 10 percent of respondents ranked the phenomenon as the most serious threat facing their communities. In the following survey, conducted in 2011, the figure rose to 26%.The results match other surveys that show increasing concern among Jews over anti-Semitism following the increase in hate crimes in Western Europe after 2000 in connection with Israel and jihadist attacks on Jewish targets, beginning with the 2012 slaying of three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school in Toulouse, France. In 2013, nearly one-third of 5,847 European Jewish respondents to an EU survey said they “seriously considered emigrating” because of anti-Semitism.Still, in all three JDC surveys among leaders of European Jewry, a majority of respondents ranked internal problems as the most serious threat facing their communities. In 2011 and 2015, the problem of “alienation of Jews from the Jewish community life” was ranked as most serious by more than half the respondents. In 2008, 38% of respondents named the “increasing rate of mixed marriages” as their communities’ No. 1 threat.

Trump, Clinton each win 4 states; Sanders 1 on Super Tuesday-GOP frontrunner takes Alabama, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Georgia, boding ill for rivals Rubio and Cruz-By AP March 2, 2016, 2:13 am Updated: March 2, 2016, 3:45 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton each won at least four states in Super Tuesday elections, the biggest day of the primary campaign. Clinton’s rival Bernie Sanders won his home state of Vermont.Clinton and Trump were pressing for sweeping victories that could distance them from their party rivals and move them closer to a November presidential election showdown. Nominating contests were being held Tuesday in 12 of the 50 U.S. states.Trump won in Alabama, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Georgia. Clinton won in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia. Voting was still ongoing in other contests or the races were too close to call.Trump, the brash billionaire and reality TV star, has stunned the Republican political establishment by winning three of the first four contests, seizing on the anxieties of voters angry at Washington and worried about terrorism, immigration and an uncertain economy. Using simple terms, and often coarse language, he has soared to the top of polls with his pledge to “make America great again.”Republican officials, fearing a Trump sweep, have been lashing out at his temperament and command of the issues in the hours before voting began.“You’ve got a con man and a bully who is moving forward with great speed to grab the party’s mantle to be its standard bearer,” Norm Coleman, a former senator who backs Marco Rubio, said in an interview with The Associated Press. “That’s almost incomprehensible.”Clinton, once seen as the all-but-inevitable Democratic nominee, has contended with an unexpectedly strong challenge from Sanders, a senator and self-described democratic socialist. But Clinton, like Trump, had also won three of the first four races, and a landslide victory in South Carolina on Saturday bodes well for prospects in important southern states Tuesday due to her overwhelming support among black voters.Candidates are vying to win delegates who will vote for them at the parties’ conventions in July. For Republicans, 595 delegates were at stake, nearly half of the 1,237 needed for the nomination. Democrats were allocating 865, delegates more than one-third of the 2,383 needed to become the nominee.Tuesday’s vote was critical for the two leading Republicans vying to be Trump’s main challenger: Ted Cruz, a firebrand conservative senator from Texas, and Rubio, a Florida senator who has become the favorite of much of the Republican establishment. Both senators have launched furious verbal attacks on Trump in recent days, but some in the party establishment fear the anti-Trump campaign has come too late.Cruz once saw the Southern states that vote Tuesday as his opportunity to stake his claim to the nomination, given their large evangelical Christian populations, only to see Trump pick up a sizable segment of evangelicals. Now the Cruz campaign’s future hinges on a victory in his home state of Texas, the biggest prize up for grabs.Rubio’s goal is even more modest. He’s seeking to stay competitive in the delegate count and hoping to pull off a win in his home state of Florida on March 15.Even before the results started flowing in, Trump was calling for Rubio to quit the race if he didn’t win anywhere on Tuesday.“He has to get out,” he told Fox News. “He hasn’t won anything.”Ohio Gov. John Kasich and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson remain in the race, but neither is expected to be a major factor on Tuesday.Republicans spent months largely letting Trump go unchallenged, wrongly assuming that his populist appeal with voters would fizzle. Instead, he’s appeared to only grow stronger, winning states and drawing support for some of his most controversial proposals. In six of the states voting Tuesday, large majorities of Republican voters said they supported a proposal to temporarily ban all non-citizen Muslims from entering the United States, an idea championed by Trump. The exit polls were conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press and television networks.Republicans fear Trump will damage their prospects of recapturing the White House after Barack Obama’s two terms. The worries appeared to grow after Trump briefly refused to disavow the apparent support of a former Ku Klux Klan leader, David Duke, during a television interview. Trump later said he had not understood the TV interviewer and he did repudiate Duke. The disarray among Republicans comes as Clinton, seeking to become America’s first female president, has tightened her grip on the Democratic race. She has increasingly turned her attention away from Sanders and on to Trump, casting herself as a civil alternative to the insults and bullying that have consumed the Republican race.“What we can’t let happen is the scapegoating, the flaming, the finger pointing that is going on the Republican side,” she told voters in Massachusetts. “It really undermines our fabric as a nation.”Sanders, who has energized young voters with his call for a political revolution, was seeking to stay close to Clinton in the South and pick up victories in other states including Minnesota in addition to Vermont. But he faces tough questions about whether he can rally minorities who are core Democratic voters.Democrats were voting in 11 states and American Samoa; Republicans were voting in 11 states.

Prospect of Trump nomination poses dilemma for Jewish Republicans-Neutrality on Israeli-Palestinian issue and support from white supremacists has Jewish GOP supporters concerned-By Ron Kampeas March 2, 2016, 3:06 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON (JTA) – Donald Trump’s surging candidacy has sent shivers through the ranks of the Republican elite and created deep anxiety among Jewish Republicans, some of whom are so unnerved they are prepared to vote for Hillary Clinton if Trump wins the nomination. Yet others say that despite Trump’s promise to be “neutral” on Israel and his support from white supremacists, conservative principles demand deference to the eventual nominee.“As boorish as he is, as occasionally foolish as he is, and how vituperative he can be, I would vote for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton any day,” said Ari Fleischer, a former spokesman for President George W. Bush and a board member of the Republican Jewish Coalition.Fleischer said he was speaking only for himself, not the RJC, which declined JTA’s request for comment. For other Jewish conservatives, Trump is too unpalatable to support, and for obvious reasons. Trump has refused to side unequivocally with Israel, declining at a recent campaign event to pin blame for the Middle East conflict on either Israel or the Palestinians, saying instead that he wished to remain “neutral.”His conservative credentials are shaky, having previously favored abortion rights and argued for the imposition of tariffs, which is anathema to the business community. And Trump’s rhetoric has won support for the billionaire real-estate magnate from quarters not known for their deference to Jewish sensitivities, including former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke and National of Islam head Louis Farrakhan. In an editorial this week, William Kristol, the neoconservative scion who runs The Weekly Standard, said the party must be saved from “a charlatan and a demagogue.” The Emergency Committee for Israel, which Kristol founded, also released a videothis week featuring clips of Trump speaking favorably of Syrian President Bashar Assad, former Libyan strongman Moammar Ghadafi and Saddam Hussein.“For this former Republican, and perhaps for others, the only choice will be to vote for Hillary Clinton,” Robert Kagan, a veteran of the Reagan State Department and now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, wrote last week in widely shared Washington Post Op-Ed. “The party cannot be saved, but the country still can be.”Jonathan Tobin, the online editor at Commentary, a conservative magazine that does not take positions on candidates, said he was doubtful Trump would garner much support from Jewish Republicans.“There are the Jewish Republicans who are focused on foreign policy, on economic policy – the sense among that group is that Trump doesn’t speak for them,” Tobin said. “And the question is, if he is the nominee – and right now it looks like it – will they vote for him. And I suspect a lot won’t.”A Jewish Republican operative who spoke on condition of anonymity said more than one Republican would secretly cast a vote for Clinton should Trump secure the nomination.“We would prefer we have mainstream candidates who don’t devolve into demagoguery, ethnocentrism and racism,” said the operative, referring to Trump’s recent equivocation over the Duke endorsement.Trump last week brusquely disavowed Duke at a news conference. But in an interview Sunday on CNN, he professed not to know who the former KKK leader was. Then Trump again disavowed Duke on Twitter after the interview aired, chalking up the discrepancy to a faulty earpiece. The following day, the Anti-Defamation Leagueissued a list of extremists that candidates were advised to steer clear of, with Duke’s name at the top of the list. Some Republicans have floated the idea that a Trump candidacy could help rally votes for congressional Republicans, the logic being that Trump is so unappealing, he practically guarantees a Clinton presidency – and that in turn strengthens the case for GOP control of the legislative branch as a means to rein her in. Tobin was skeptical.“Jewish Republicans, like other Republicans, will say that,” he said. “But in a presidential election year, if you don’t like the guy at the top of the ticket, it depresses the turnout. I suspect a lot of Jewish Republicans will sit it out.”As much as Trump repels some Jewish Republicans, he could still command their support, if only because expectations of party loyalty run so deep. Fred Zeidman, a Houston businessman who supported former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, said propriety demanded deference to the winner.“I won’t say anything negative about Donald Trump any more than other [Republican] candidates,” Zeidman said. “I wish he had a different approach, but in America you get to vote, and if most Republicans want to get Donald Trump, that’s what it is. And the fact of the matter is we have to go on to defeat the Democratic candidate.”Some Jewish Republicans remain reluctant to declare. Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, who is said to be wavering between Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas, took care to cover his ballot sheet when he attended the Nevada caucus last week. But a Wall Street Journal reporter was able to see him check a box on the ballot’s lower third, which included the names of Rubio, Trump and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has quit the race.Still, Trump is a shock to the system for a Jewish constituency that has prided itself on shaping the party in recent years as unassailably correct on Israel and open to diversity. Fleischer co-wrote a report after the last election on how to reach out to minorities.“He’s given a lot of people a lot of reason to pause and question whether he is a supporter of Israel,” Fleischer said.“The word neutrality is fingernails across a chalk board in the Jewish community. It screams at you, and it sends up all kinds of warning flags about who he is and what he believes.”Norm Coleman, a former Republican senator from Minnesota who backs Rubio, said the fight was not over.“I won’t speak about the unspeakable and I still believe that my party is not going to nominate Donald Trump,” Coleman said. “The prospect of Trump leading our party is deeply troubling. It would be destructive of the party and would harm the nation, and give us four more years of Clinton-Obama foreign policy, which has gravely weakened us in the world and undermined our allies.”
