Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed back Sunday at ministers pressuring him to use his first meeting with US President Donald Trump to disavow his support for Palestinian statehood, telling the weekly cabinet meeting that only “responsible policy-making” would protect Israel’s interests.“This is an extremely important meeting for the security of Israel, both for our increasingly strong international standing and for our wide international interests,” the prime minister said of his scheduled Wednesday’s sit-down with Trump at the White House.Writing on Facebook Saturday night, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who chairs the Jewish Home party, said the meeting with Trump would be “the test of Netanyahu’s life” and would determine Israel’s policy toward the Palestinians for years to come.Bennett said that if the two men mention “an obligation to establish Palestine or ‘two states’ in some or other iteration, it will impact us directly for years to come. The Haifa Court for Local Affairs ruled on Sunday that an ammonia tank that the city council has fought to remove over concerns that it threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the area must be emptied within 10 days.The ruling was another victory for the city on the issue, after the court ordered the temporary closure of the ammonia storage tank last week.The Haifa Group, a fertilizer producer that operates the tank, said in a statement following the ruling that “the company will respect the court’s decision.”It wasn’t immediately clear how much ammonia the 12,000-ton-capacity tank currently contains.Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav hailed the decision, calling it “an additional accomplishment in the year-long struggle, which we will not stop until the storage tank is removed from Haifa Bay.”MK Yair Lapid, who heads the opposition Yesh Atid party, also praised the court’s ruling, saying in a statement that it was important “for the safety of the residents of Haifa and the area.”It is time “to remove the the greatest bomb in the Middle East from Haifa Bay,” he added.The Haifa municipality submitted its petition for the closure of the ammonium storage facility following the publication two weeks ago of a report it commissioned that found the port city’s ammonia operations pose a serious risk to the population.The report was also been submitted to the High Court of Justice as part of a legal dispute between Haifa Group and the municipality.If ruptured, the vast ammonia storage tank would suffocate 16,000 victims under a toxic cloud, the report said. The tank could “fall apart tomorrow morning,” the report’s author, chemistry professor Ehud Keinan, said at a press conference to release the report on January 31, held at the municipality.“If the tank breaks apart we are talking about 16,000 fatalities,” Keinan warned.But an even worse danger, the report said, is posed by a delivery ship carrying over 16,000 tons of ammonia that arrives at the Haifa container once a month. If its cargo were released to the air, it could kill as many as 600,000 in the bay area, according to the report.Last year, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah threatened to target Haifa’s ammonia facilities with rockets in the next conflict with Israel.He quoted an unnamed Israeli official saying that a strike on the northern city’s ammonia storage tanks would cause tens of thousands of fatalities.Hours after Nasrallah issued the explicit threat to strike Haifa, then-environmental protection minister Avi Gabbai said he had ordered that the ammonia storage facility be moved to the Negev desert. The deputy head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haniyeh took part in a ceremony Saturday to dedicate a new Qatari-funded housing project in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis.Haniyeh announced at the ceremony that the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, will deliver an additional $100 million for the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip, the Ynet news site reported. Of those funds, Haniyeh added, $25 million will be allocated for a hospital in Rafah, and another $10 million will be designated for a center to treat people with special needs in Gaza City.The Hamas official further stated that Qatar had vowed to transfer $30 million to erect new electricity lines, and another $12 million for fuel to be used in Gaza’s power plants.Gaza is currently experiencing the worst electricity shortage in years, with power supplied to households only three to four hours a day.In recent months, Gaza residents have staged spontaneous demonstrations, including one on Thursday night that saw thousands of Palestinians taking to the streets of Jabaliya, in the northern Strip, demanding more power. Hamas cracked down the protesters, arresting protesters and targeting journalists covering the demonstrations.The two million residents of Gaza require around 450-500 megawatts of power per day, but are receiving less than half of that. With cold winters, demand has spiked — leading to the shortages.Islamist terror group Hamas seized control of Gaza from Fatah, which dominates the Palestinian Authority, in a bloody battle in 2007. Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said he would like to see all of Israel’s “Palestinian” citizens relocate to the Palestinian territories and become citizens there, and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at his meeting on Wednesday with Donald Trump, should coordinate with the new US president on expanding Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank.In an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 news, Liberman, asked about the two-state solution and his political program, said that his prime concern, when seeking to solve the conflict with the Palestinians, is to ensure the maintenance of Israel as a Jewish state.“I want a Jewish state. Just as the Palestinians want a homogeneous Palestinian state, without a single Jew in it, judenrein, so I first and foremost want as Jewish a state [of Israel] as possible.”Liberman reiterated his long-held conviction that the “land for peace” equation “has failed, and is a giant mistake” and that what is needed for an Israeli-Palestinian accommodation is “exchanges of territory and populations.” (A little over a fifth of Israel’s 8.6 million citizens are Arabs.) “I want to separate from all the Palestinians who live here inside pre-1967 [Israel],” he declared in the (Hebrew) interview. “With my blessing: You are Palestinians, you should go to [live under the rule of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] Abu Mazen. You’ll be citizens of the Palestinian Authority. Amid ongoing criminal investigations into Benjamin Netanyahu, senior Jewish Home and Likud ministers sparred Sunday over rumored efforts to position themselves as potential successors to the embattled prime minister.Responding to rumors that Education Minister Naftali Bennett, the Jewish Home chairman, was behind a series of leaks regarding the government’s conduct during the 2014 Gaza war, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) said Bennett was playing politics with Israel’s security.“Bennett is trying to widen his support base at the expense of national interests and it needs to stop.” Katz told Army Radio.Last week lawmakers approved the publication of a section of a state comptroller report on how Israel handled the threat of Hamas attack tunnels during the war, following a number of leaks detailing its key findings.The report relates to how the security cabinet of top-level ministers handled itself in the run-up and during the campaign, officials dubbed Operation Protective Edge in Israel.Portions of the report that have been leaked to the press painted a damning picture of the failure of Netanyahu and then-defense minister Moshe Ya’alon to properly inform the security cabinet of the extent of the threat emanating from Hamas’s underground network.Bennett, who served at the time as economy minister, maintains that he became aware of the urgency of dealing with cross-border tunnels — an issue that became the war’s main goal in its final weeks — outside the confines of cabinet discussions, including during his conversations with IDF officers, and that the threat posed by the tunnels was not properly discussed or understood in the security cabinet’s meetings.Ramping up criticism of Bennett already expressed by Netanyahu and Ya’alon, Katz suggested Sunday that the Jewish Home leader’s belligerence was buoying terrorists in the Gaza Strip.“Security cabinet members should not mouth off for political points,” he said. “It’s a grave situation that the head of a small party can ignite the Gaza region and even draw the military establishment into a war due to opportunistic political considerations.”On Monday morning, a rocket was fired from northern Gaza at Israel, striking an open field south of the city of Ashkelon. TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian semi-official news agency is reporting that a drone belonging to the Iranian navy has crashed in the southern port town of Jask.The Sunday report by Tasnim, which has ties to the military, said thick smoke rose from the crash site in downtown Jask, some 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran. The Haifa Court for Local Affairs ruled on Sunday that an ammonia tank that the city council has fought to remove over concerns that it threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the area must be emptied within 10 days.The ruling was another victory for the city on the issue, after the court ordered the temporary closure of the ammonia storage tank last week.The Haifa Group, a fertilizer producer that operates the tank, said in a statement following the ruling that “the company will respect the court’s decision.”It wasn’t immediately clear how much ammonia the 12,000-ton-capacity tank currently contains.Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav hailed the decision, calling it “an additional accomplishment in the year-long struggle, which we will not stop until the storage tank is removed from Haifa Bay.”MK Yair Lapid, who heads the opposition Yesh Atid party, also praised the court’s ruling, saying in a statement that it was important “for the safety of the residents of Haifa and the area.”It is time “to remove the the greatest bomb in the Middle East from Haifa Bay,” he added.The Haifa municipality submitted its petition for the closure of the ammonium storage facility following the publication two weeks ago of a report it commissioned that found the port city’s ammonia operations pose a serious risk to the population.The report was also been submitted to the High Court of Justice as part of a legal dispute between Haifa Group and the municipality.If ruptured, the vast ammonia storage tank would suffocate 16,000 victims under a toxic cloud, the report said.
