A Jewish day school in North Miami Beach was evacuated following a bomb threat.The Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes school, which has enrolled 600 students from early childhood to high school, received a fax on Sunday demanding $25,000 in ransom and threatening to detonate explosives already in place at the school if the demand was not met, WSVN News 7 reported late Sunday.The message warned school officials not to call police, saying if they do so “I’ll know.” The letter also said that the would-be bomber had access to the school’s computers and email addresses, according to The Yeshiva World news website. The letter demanded that the money be sent to a certain address in the United States via Western Union by May 31.Roads near the school campus were shut down and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the area. No bombs were found.

Summarizing his first foreign trip as president, Donald Trump on Saturday said Israeli and Palestinian leaders had told him they were willing to “reach for peace,” and added that he believed their pledges to be sincere.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas “assured me he is willing to reach for peace with Israel in good faith, and I believe he will,” Trump told US troops in Sicily, in a speech where he recounted his visits to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Belgium and Italy, and his work to counter terrorism.“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured me that he too was ready to reach for peace. On Friday, the Washington Post reported that Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner spoke with Russia’s ambassador to the US about setting up secret communications with Moscow.Trump held no news conferences during the nine-day trip, which allowed him to avoid questions about the Russia investigations. His top economic and national security advisers refused to answer questions about Kushner during a press briefing Saturday.The White House had hoped to use Trump’s five-stop trip as a moment to reset. The president was warmly received on his opening stops in Saudi Arabia and Israel, though he has come under more pressure in Europe, particularly over the Paris accord.Trump was cajoled for three days — first in Brussels at meetings of NATO and the European Union, then in Sicily for G7 — but will leave Italy without making clear where he stands.As the G7 summit came to a close Saturday, the six other members — Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan — renewed their commitment to the accord. The summit’s communique noted that the Trump administration would take more time to consider whether it will remain committed to the 2015 Paris deal to rein in greenhouse gas emissions.Backing out of the climate accord had been a central plank of Trump’s campaign and aides have been exploring whether they can adjust the framework of the deal even if they don’t opt out entirely. Other G-7 nations leaned heavily on Trump to stay in the climate deal, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying “we put forward very many arguments.”The president’s trip has largely gone off without a major misstep, with the administration touting the president’s efforts to birth a new coalition to fight terrorism, while admonishing partners in an old alliance to pay their fair share.“I think we hit a home run no matter where we are,” Trump told the soldiers. He also touted his meetings with NATO members, adding, “We’re behind NATO all the way.” He reiterated a renewed commitment by NATO members to spend more on defense.Trump was referring to a vow by NATO countries to move toward spending 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense by 2024. Only five of NATO’s 28 members meet the target: Britain, Estonia, debt-laden Greece, Poland and the United States, which spends more on defense than all the other allies combined.“The US is currently paying much more than any other nation and that is not fair to the United States or the United States taxpayer. So we’re working on it and I will tell you, a big difference over the last year, money is actually starting to pour into NATO from countries that would not have been doing what they’re doing now had I not been elected, I can tell you that. Money is starting to pour in,” Trump said, echoing a tweet earlier Saturday on the subject.There is no evidence that money has begun to “pour in” and countries do not pay the US or NATO directly. But Germany, for instance, has been increasing its defense spending with the goal of reaching the 2 percent target by 2024.After the pomp of presidential travel overseas, Trump will return to Washington and many of the problems he left behind.As a newly appointed special counsel is beginning to investigate links between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, Kushner has become a focus of the probe. Kushner’s lawyer said he will cooperate with investigators.James Comey, the former FBI director who led the Russian probe until Trump abruptly fired him, is still expected to testify before Congress about memos he kept on conversations with the president that involved the investigation. Meanwhile, the search for a new FBI director continues.And Trump’s policy agenda has run into problems. The GOP health care bill that passed the House faces uncertain prospects in the Senate after a Congressional Budget Office analysis that it would leave 23 million more Americans uninsured by 2026. The president’s budget was widely criticized for deep cuts to safety net programs. And some are starting to question the chances for Trump’s pledge to overhaul the US tax code.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday cautioned that although the current US administration is very understanding of Israel’s needs, the country doesn’t have a “blank check” to do as it wishes concerning the Palestinians.Speaking at his Likud faction weekly meeting, Netanyahu stressed that US President Donald Trump is set on seeing peace between Israel and the Palestinians and hinted that the American leader expects the Jewish state to be accommodating.“I want to tell you, we don’t have a blank check on the political level,”Netanyahu reportedly told Likud lawmakers at a closed-door meeting in the Knesset in Jerusalem.“We are a sovereign country, we can decide on many things and declare many things, but as far as the consent of the Americans goes I would not go that far,” multiple Hebrew media outlets quoted Netanyahu as saying.“It is true that there are warm relations and there is a lot of understanding for our basic positions, but it is not true that we have a blank check, and that is far from the reality,” he said.Trump’s election was greeted with joy in the Israeli government, particularly on its right flank, which argued that this was an opportunity for Israel to annex large parts of the West Bank and begin a massive program of building in the settlements and Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.But Trump has since asked Israel to restrain settlement construction and is pushing for the two sides to resume peace talks.Trump last week made a 28-hour visit to Israel during which he also traveled to the West Bank to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. You heard President Trump, he came here and did very important things and touched the soul, but he also said that he believes that Abbas wants peace. He said that he believes that it is possible to reach a deal and that we need to reach it. We are in that situation,” Netanyahu said.Before Trump’s arrival, coalition lawmakers and ministers — including Netanyahu himself — had publicly called for Trump to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a measure that would be seen as recognition of the city as Israel’s capital. Trump made no reference at to the embassy during his visit. He did, however, become the first serving US president to visit the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem, but he made it clear it was a private visit as American officials rejected a request that Netanyahu accompany him.In March, Israel agreed to self-imposed restrictions on new settlement construction in what was seen as a gesture to the Trump administration after months-long negotiations between the two sides failed to yield any formal understanding on the matter.The White House at the time said it “welcomed” the curb, cautioning Israel against engaging in large-scale construction projects.

Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid said Monday that the entire Israeli security establishment is deeply concerned by US President Donald Trump’s massive arms deal with Saudi Arabia, and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed Israel’s national security because he neither prevented nor tried to minimize the damage of the accord.The approximately $110 billion weapons deal is the largest in American history and includes advanced air defense systems, ships, helicopters, intelligence-gathering aircraft, tanks, artillery and cybersecurity systems, according to the US State Department.Speaking to The Times of Israel at our offices in Jerusalem, Lapid said that the way Netanyahu addressed the deal, both before it was announced and after, was “almost reckless” and ignored key Israeli security concerns. Under internal political pressure for Trump’s visit to Israel to appear a flawless success, Lapid said, the prime minster neglected to protect Israel’s interests in the region.Lapid said Israel did not know about the deal ahead of time — but it would have, had there been a properly functioning Foreign Ministry and a full-time foreign minister.And he raised specific concerns about some of the materiel that is being supplied to the Saudis. “Saudi Arabia is the most powerful Sunni country. Terrorist groups like Islamic State and Al Qaeda are Sunni, and millions of people in the country support Islamic State and Al Qaeda,” Lapid noted. “So even if the threat doesn’t come from Saudi Arabia itself, these weapons are an inch away from the Sunni terrorists.”In particular, Lapid highlighted the strategic partnership agreement, announced as part of the deal, between Raytheon, the contractor representing Israel for sales of the Iron Dome anti-rocket system to the US, and the Saudi government. Under the agreement, Raytheon will build Saudi Arabia a cybersecurity center that Lapid is worried may one day be used to carry out cyberattacks against Israel.“This worries me because once you give them the cyber ability, you cannot tell them that they can only direct it towards Iran. No, it’s going to be directed towards Israel as well,” he said emphatically.The offensive cyber capabilities that Saudi Arabia will receive as part of the accord could cause untold havoc in Israel, Lapid warned. “They could shut down the electricity in the room we are sitting in,” he said. “They could penetrate Israel’s Defense Ministry.”Lapid, a former finance minister who sits on the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee’s subcommittee on security and intelligence matters, said he was not alone in his bleak analysis of the deal, and there was deep concern in “the entire security establishment.”“When the minister of defense is saying the opposite thing from the prime minister, you know that something is wrong. The Israeli military establishment is worried. This is a big deal,” he added.One of the most notable aspects of the deal is that the Saudis will receive the Americans’ Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile system. This is the same type of battery that the US recently deployed in South Korea to help defend it against an increasingly aggressive Pyongyang. Lapid said the worry is not just in Saudi Arabia owning the system, but in the possibility of it being deployed across the Middle East and therefore limiting Israel’s aerial superiority in the region.“Netanyahu was under pressure for this visit to be successful for domestic political reasons,” Lapid said. And “there’s nothing wrong with fully embracing the president.“Yet, I am concerned about the things that weren’t done,” he said. “I understand that everybody wanted to have a perfect visit. And yet, is is part of policy to tell the American president, ‘Listen, we appreciate the friendship, but we are unhappy with the fact that you’re selling arms to the Saudis for $110 billion without even consulting us.'”By not doing so, Netanyahu “ignored what is essential Israeli security,” according to Lapid, who said that the prime minister was desperate for Trump’s visit to Israel to be a success. “Our defense minister said he is very worried, and the Prime Minister’s Office said there is nothing to worry about. Who should we believe? [Defense Minister Avigdor] Liberman, who represents the entire Israeli defense system, or the Prime Minster’s Office, which was preoccupied with the fact that they don’t want to ruin the visit.”Following Trump’s visit to Israel last week, Liberman said he was uneasy over the deal announced over the weekend when the US president was in Riyadh and believed it was part of a “crazy” regional arms race. “I’m not at peace with any arms race and the huge Saudi purchase for sure doesn’t add much to our peace of mind,” Liberman said in an interview with Army Radio last Wednesday, adding that he had expressed his concerns in recent talks with US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster.Hours later, Netanyahu said the US had agreed to boost the defense aid it gives to Israel and would ensure that the country maintained its qualitative advantage.But Lapid said that if he were prime minister, he would have worked to prevent the deal from happening in the first place and publicly spoken out against it.“First of all I would have the kind of functional Foreign Ministry that would make sure we know these things in advance, not finding out during the ceremony in Riyadh. And I would have a foreign minister who is capable of talking to the State Department,” he said. Since the 2015 elections, Netanyahu has resisted appointing a full-time foreign minister, instead holding the position himself.According to Lapid, had Israel known the extent of the deal beforehand, efforts could have been made via AIPAC and US lawmakers to put pressure on the Trump administration. “There are a bunch of things that could have been done, and none of them were,” he said.Beyond the general types of weapons and systems that will be sold, many of the specifics about the deal have yet to be released, he noted. But a large influx of advanced military technology into the region should be of the utmost concern to Israel and therefore to the United States, which must continue to preserve the Jewish state’s “qualitative military edge” — its military advantage over surrounding Middle East countries, Lapid said.Speaking later Monday, at the Yesh Atid faction meeting at the Knesset, Lapid said Netanyahu now needs to confront Trump on the deal.“The prime minister must demand public, not private, explanations, from the US president and his staff,” Lapid said, urging the Israeli security establishment to push for a compensation package from the Pentagon to uphold its regional military edge.“The prime minister must stop being afraid of President Trump’s short fuse and tell him publicly: ‘For you it is a question of money and jobs — for us it’s a matter of life and death,'” he said.Trump has said that he believes Saudi Arabia could be a key player in helping moderate the region, and was “deeply encouraged” during his visit to the kingdom by the prospect that Riyadh could help Israel reach a deal with the Palestinians.King Salman, Trump said, would “love to see peace between Israel and the Palestinians.”“Many [Muslim leaders] expressed their resolve to help end terrorism and the spread of radicalization. There’s a growing realization among your Arab neighbors that they have common cause with you on this threat posed by Iran — and it is a threat, make no mistake about that,” Trump said during a meeting with President Reuven Rivlin at his residence in Jerusalem.Lapid, while praising Trump’s efforts, warned against over-confidence.“I would be a little more cautious saying there is a readiness to a process that will lead to an agreement,” he told The Times of Israel. “The US is not only an honest broker, but it is the broker we want. And when your biggest ally is talking you want to listen. But when push comes to shove, Israel and Israel alone will determine what’s good and what’s bad for us. And we cannot be forced to do anything which hurts our security.”While opposition leader Isaac Herzog openly declared that he’d back the Netanyahu coalition if a peace deal were in the cards, Lapid was adamant that he would never join the current prime minister’s government, even if it meant forcing new elections. “I am not joining this coalition. I could have been foreign minister now for two years and I decided not to. As a result of her efforts, more than $200 million has been collected for terror victims and their families (including out of court settlements), and some $600 million in assets has been frozen.Darshan-Leitner has also used the courts to fight against what she considers to be unfair lawsuits against Israeli military commanders. In one notable case, she stopped a Spanish lawsuit against Israel’s Chief of Staff Dan Halutz over a bombing raid in Gaza by filing a similar suit against Javier Solana, a top Spanish politician who had overseen NATO’s bombing of Kosovo. She plans to sue them both.“Hezbollah is launching a fundraising campaign and using Western Union to accept the donations, so one of the moves that we are planning is to go after Western Union,” says Darshan-Leitner. “In addition, we learned that Boeing not only signed a horrible deal with Iran providing them with 80 aircraft with a special waiver for the sanctions, Iran actually is using these aircraft to deliver missiles into Syria and let Hezbollah drive them to South Lebanon to shoot them over Israel.“We are suing Boeing now to stop the deal, and we are launching a campaign to put pressure on the administration not to let Boeing continue,” she says.Darshan-Leitner is also suing Facebook, Twitter and other social media giants for their alleged role in “facilitating” terror activity.“Facebook, Twitter and Google provide material support in the form of social media network services to Hamas, to ISIS. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday praised Norway for withdrawing funding from a Palestinian women’s center named for a terrorist who took part in the 1978 Coastal Road massacre.The prime minister said Israel had made a point of pressing nations and organizations over this issue and would continue to do so.Dalal Mughrabi and several other Fatah terrorists landed on a beach near Tel Aviv, hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Road and killed 38 civilians, 13 of them children, and wounded over 70. The new West Bank center, which opened last month and was funded in part by the Scandinavian country, was named in her honor.The prime minister revealed during the weekly meeting of his Likud parliamentary faction that he instructed Foreign Ministry director-general Yuval Rotem several days ago to press Norway and the United Nations to pull their donations from the West Bank project.Norway’s foreign minister “did precisely that. And it’s good that he did,” the prime minister said.He said “according to his understanding,” the UN will also distance itself from the organization. The UN issued a statement on Sunday condemning the center.“We implement this policy even with regard to our closest friends, and warn them we cannot accept it that friendly governments support organizations that glorify terrorism and act against IDF soldiers,” Netanyahu said. “It’s a process.”On Friday Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende said that Norway had been unaware of the decision to name the center after Mughrabi. He demanded that the country’s name be removed from the center and that the funds it gave for construction be returned.“We have asked for the logo of the Norwegian representation office to be removed from the building immediately, and for the funding that has been allocated to the center to be repaid,” he said.Brende also said that Norway would no longer participate in similar projects until the country receives assurances “that nothing of this nature happens again.”At the faction meeting Netanyahu also defended his new policy to boycott foreign leaders who meet with left-leaning NGOs, which Israel accuses of setting up Israeli soldiers for future prosecution in foreign tribunals.“You can meet me. But you cannot meet with these organizations and also meet with me,” he said, adding that this message is sinking in.“Our soldiers protect us. Norway’s foreign minister on Friday condemned the Palestinian Authority for naming a women’s center in the West Bank, funded in part by the Scandinavian country, after a female terrorist.“The glorification of terrorist attacks is completely unacceptable, and I deplore this decision in the strongest possible terms. Norway will not allow itself to be associated with institutions that take the names of terrorists in this way. We will not accept the use of Norwegian aid funding for such purposes,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende said in a statement.Brende’s comments were made in reference to a new women’s center opened earlier this month in the West Bank town of Burqa. The center was named after Dalal Mughrabi, who took part in the 1978 Coastal Road Massacre. Mughrabi and several other Fatah terrorists landed on a beach near Tel Aviv, hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Road and killed 38 civilians, 13 of them children, and wounded over 70.Brende said that Norway had been unaware of the decision to name the center after Mughrabi. He demanded that the country’s name be removed from the center and that the funds it gave for construction be returned.“We have asked for the logo of the Norwegian representation office to be removed from the building immediately, and for the funding that has been allocated to the center to be repaid,” he said.He also said that Norway would no longer participate in similar projects until the country receives assurances “that nothing of this nature happens again.”“We will not enter into any new agreements with either the Palestinian Election Commission or UN Women in Palestinian areas until satisfactory procedures are in place to ensure that nothing of this nature happens again,” he said.Israel commended Oslo’s action, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon saying “Norway took the right step — a tough line against memorializing terrorists is an integral part of the international effort to eliminate terror. PRAGUE (AP) — A group of the children saved by Sir Nicholas Winton from Nazi death camps has, some 70 years later, unveiled a monument in Prague’s main train station to honor their parents.The Briton arranged eight trains to carry 669 children, most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia through Germany to Britain at the outbreak of World War II in 1939. He died in 2015 at age 106.The children were sent to foster parents. Back home, most of their parents died in the Holocaust.The Farewell Memorial is a replica of a 1939 train door with the hands of children on one side and those of parents on the other.Milena Grenfell-Baines, one of those saved, said Saturday the monument was a belated expression of thanks.Winton was a 29-year-old London stockbroker in December 1938 when a friend asked him to go to Prague to help in the refugee camps. He decided to do more after seeing that the children of those considered enemies of the Nazis, who had annexed part of western Czechoslovakia, were not being cared for.When Winton returned home, he set to work by taking letterhead from the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, then typing underneath the words “Children’s Section.”He eventually wrung a promise from the British government to let the children enter the country, provided he had a foster home arranged for each one and upon payment of a guarantee of 50 pounds per child.Winton drew up lists of some 6,000 at-risk children and encouraged British families to take them in. He arranged trains from Prague to the Netherlands, then ferries to take the children across the North Sea.The children from Prague helped by Winton were among some 10,000 mostly Jewish children who made their way to Britain on what were known as Kindertransports (children’s transports) just before and during the first years of the war. Many never saw their parents again.

For decades, we’ve watched American administrations wrestle with the nuances of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, gradually formulating and recalibrating their positions — seeking to make progress for Israel’s sake, for the Palestinians’ sake, seeking to defang a pretext for terrorism, seeking the near-impossible deal.And when US President Donald J. Trump came to the Middle East this week — to Riyadh, Jerusalem and Bethlehem — the Arab and Israeli leaders he met, and the pundits who watched him, subjected his every utterance to the spectacularly nuanced scrutiny they applied to all those other administrations over the years. Where is the administration headed? What to make of what he said, of what he didn’t say? But Trump is no sophisticate where matters of Middle East political maneuvering are concerned. And neither has he surrounded himself with Middle East sophisticates. The former administration experts on our region, and the best brains the US think tanks can produce — thus far, at least, almost none of them has been drawn into the Trump administration brain trust.For now, therefore, it’s worth internalizing that where President Trump and the Middle East peace process are concerned, there is no strategy for the pundits to try to figure out. It’s not even a case of “What you see is what you get” — because there’s no telling what we may get. It is, rather: What you see is what there is. Not carefully, warily calculated formulations, hinting at the subtle agenda beneath. But Trump front and center. Trump from the heart. Trump from the gut.And what you see is a president who believes in his deal-making skills, and wants to think he can apply them to regional politics.What you see is a president who is wary of Muslims, but is now, rhetorically at least, distinguishing between the religion and its adherents, on the one hand, and the political manipulation of the religion by evil people, on the other — hence his talk in Riyadh on Sunday of “Islamist extremism” and “Islamist terror.” Not Islamic extremism; not Islamic terror.What you see is a president instinctively supportive of Israel — of a strong nation, with a glorious history, that knows how to look after itself. You saw it in his history-making “private visit” to the Israeli-liberated, holiest place for Jewish prayer — kippah on head, respectful, empathetic. It is an unsophisticated love — a birthright Israel-style love — that the Palestinians are doing their best to cloud. (After unsophisticated love for Israel, there often follows dismay at the realization that not everything is quite as clear-cut as one had thought. The more you know, the more complicated it can get; the challenge for Israel and its supporters will become more acute if Trump engages more deeply, to see him maintain his Zionist sensibilities amid the complex narrative of our reality here.) What you see is a president who, to hear his remarks about Jerusalem, would for sure have changed the plaque on the West Jerusalem consulate to say “Embassy,” and may yet do so, but who in pledging to make that change while on the campaign trail knew little about the potential implications and ramifications.What you see is a president who is well-disposed toward Jews. They’re part of his family. Several hold key administration positions. They’re his lawyers. They’re his former lawyers now filling key posts like special envoy and ambassador to Israel.What you see is a president who thinks America under Obama exuded weakness in the Middle East and was an unreliable ally of Israel, and intends to change all that.What you see is a president deeply hostile to the regime in Iran, who has given senior positions to ex-military figures who share and outdo him in that hostility, and who heard from King Salman and others in Riyadh how widely feared Iran is, and how central to this region’s problems and to threats beyond this region.What you see is a president who, on this trip, was keenly aware of Evangelical support for Israel, and who wanted to ensure that his visit would play well back home for the Republican party.What you see is a president who has now spent considerable time with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who has doubtless been presented for the first time with passionate advocacy for the Palestinian cause, and who chose only to implicitly confront Abbas in public with the imperative to stop inciting terrorism and funding terrorists and their families, but who knows that the Republican Party is itching to financially punish the Palestinian Authority if the issue is not resolved.What you see is a president who may get sicker of the whole Israeli-Palestinian quagmire the deeper he gets drawn into it. Who may banish Abbas from his White House like George W. Bush banished Yasser Arafat. Or not. Who may become impatient when Benjamin Netanyahu tells him that, no, sorry Donald, there are concessions we simply cannot and will not make. Or not.What you see is a president who really, truly, doesn’t care if there’s a one-state or a two-state solution because, at least until this trip, he had little sense of the significance of either, and may not have even now.What you see is a president who wants to proclaim that he brokered the impossible deal. But who, embattled at home, will be constrained and preoccupied. And who plainly has no instant solution, because nobody does. (We need the long-haul approach, as I stressed in this piece on the eve of his visit.)What you see is a president, thus far, who is doggedly attached to the charmingly optimistic, thoroughly well-intentioned and dangerously false notion he set out when hosting Abbas at the White House early this month, that solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict “is something that I think is, frankly, maybe not as difficult as people have thought over the years.”In his Israel Museum speech, the last event of his whirlwind Middle East trip, he insisted, in a departure from his prepared text, that Abbas and the Palestinians are “ready to reach for peace.” Speaking slowly, as though addressing small children, he continued, “I know you’ve heard it before. I am telling you. That’s what I do. They are ready to reach for peace.” And, he went on, still extemporizing, after his meeting with “my very good friend, Benjamin, I can tell you also, that he is reaching for peace. He wants peace.”To which one can only say two things:One: Would that it were all so simple.Two: Nobody, but nobody, knows quite what will happen when — or if — President Trump allows himself to recognize that it is not.

Israel said on Sunday that it would reduce the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip, after the Palestinian Authority said it would not continue to pay the bill.The decision, which could have a major humanitarian impact on the Strip’s two million residents, who are already facing an energy crisis, was announced by Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Major General Yoav (Poly) Mordechai during an interview on BBC Arabic.“Israel is forced to reduce the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip,” he said, blaming the move on an internal power struggle between the Palestinians.“This is an internal Palestinian issue, not an Israeli-Palestinian issue,” Mordechai said. “Unfortunately there are internal problems between Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, and this brought about a decision by the PA not to finance the electricity,” he added.The PA first informed Israel back in April it would no longer pay for Gaza’s electricity.The move is part of a series of steps aimed a forcing Hamas to either cede control of the Gaza Strip back to the PA, or take full responsibility for the enclave.Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007 after a violent conflict with PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party.A spokesperson for COGAT told The Times of Israel “no official time” has been chosen to put the measure into effect.According to Mordechai, Israel is presently the only supplier of electricity to the Gaza Strip.Gaza’s residents have already been experiencing deep power cuts for the last two months, having just four to six hours of electricity a day.The embattled enclave’s only power plant stopped running in April, after Hamas ran out of fuel and refused to purchase more from the Palestinian Authority over what it said were high taxes.Egypt also provided a small amount of power to Gaza, but those power lines have been malfunctioning.According to Mordechai, Israel currently supplies Gaza with 125 megawatts monthly — around 30% of what is needed to power Gaza for 24 hours a day. Israel had also decided to provide another 100 megawatts a month.After the new decision is implemented, Israel will supply Gaza with only 75 megawatts a month.The PA has been paying 40 million shekels ($11.1 million) a month for the 125 megawatts. Mordechai said he received an “official notice” from Ramallah saying it is “interested in transferring” just 20-25 million shekels ($5.6- 7 million) a month for electricity to Gaza.In May, Hussein al-Sheikh, head of the PA’s Civil Affairs Department, said Hamas profits from collecting electricity payments from Gaza residents.“We are not going to continue financing the Hamas coup in Gaza,” he told the Voice of Palestine radio station.Mordechai echoed these accusations.“Unfortunately, Hamas takes NIS 100 million ($28 million) a month from residents of the Gaza Strip: from the goods, from the taxes of all the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and this does not reach the Palestinian Authority,” he said.“The reason for this is that Hamas prefers that the money go to the tunnels, to the digging and to the organization,” he added.The Israeli general said Hamas leaders enjoy electricity 24 hours a day, and that each member of the group is provided with a generator and fuel. “Hamas prefers its interests over the interests of the people of Gaza,” he said.Without a sufficient supply of power, Gaza’s current “humanitarian crisis” will deepen, the World Bank warned in an April report.Gaza’s health ministry has warned of cutbacks on hospital care due to a lack of power.Gazans are also dependent on water desalinization plants to provide them with drinking water. Without power, the operation of these plants will be further compromised.Water expert Dr. Yousef Abu-Mayla from the University of Al-Azhar of Gaza said earlier this month at the Sharing Knowledge Foundation Conference in Jordan that just 10% of Gazans currently have access to safe drinking water, as even desalinated Gaza water is susceptible to biological contamination.The price of drinkable water in Gaza is so prohibitive, he added, “vulnerable households end up spending one-third of their income on water.”Hamas, which openly calls for the Jewish state’s destruction, has fought three wars with Israel since 2007, and continues to manufacture rockets and dig tunnels into Israel in preparation for another round of conflict.

The powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has established a third underground ballistic missile production facility in southwestern Iran, the semi-official Fars News agency reported Thursday.Amirali Hajizadeh, head of the IRGC’s airspace program, told the Iranian outlet that the country would continue its ballistic missile program despite international criticism.The facility was under construction for years, Hajizadeh told Fars.Alongside the Iran nuclear deal in 2015, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution that “called upon [Iran] not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”However, Tehran has interpreted that call to be a suggestion, and has carried out multiple ballistic missile tests since the passage of the nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has been adamant about the need to curb Iran’s weapons development programs, with the White House “officially putting Iran on notice” earlier this year.Hajizadeh responded to Trump’s tough words on Iran.“We are increasing our missile capabilities,” he said. “It is natural that our enemies America and [Israel] are concerned and angry about the missile production and missile tests and showing our ‘missile cities’ because they want the Iranian nation always to be in a weak position.”Many of Iran’s ballistic missiles are stored in so-called “missile cities,” underground storage facilities where they are kept to protect them from airstrikes.Trump has also encouraged the formation of an anti-Iran coalition consisting of Sunni Muslim nations, like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan.On Saturday, Trump signed a weapons deal with Saudi Arabia worth approximately $110 billion, including the advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, which is designed to intercept incoming ballistic missiles.In his interview, Hajizadeh said he was not concerned by the recent arms deal to its Saudi enemies, as he was “confident” that the weapons would be used not against the Islamic Republic, but against Israel.The Jewish state has expressed some moderate concern over the supposedly largest-ever arms deal to Saudi Arabia. Supporters of Lebanese terror group Hezbollah marking the anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon 17 years ago set fire to a field along the Israel-Lebanon border near the northern Israeli town of Metulla on Thursday, setting off several mines.Explosions were heard in the area as Israel Defense Forces responded to the incident, Israel Radio reported.Soldiers were said to have dispersed the crowd on the other side of the border, apparently by firing shots into the air. There were no immediate reports of injuries.A video from the scene posted by an Israel Radio reporter showed smoke rising from the field, as a number of IDF soldiers gathered near the fence.Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon began on May 23, 2000, ending 18 years of presence in the country since the start of the First Lebanon War in 1982. The pullout was completed over two days.Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, gained strength and power after the withdrawal, engaging in a 38-day war with Israel over the summer of 2006 after a cross-border raid that killed eight IDF soldiers and saw the capture of two reservists, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, who were critically injured and later died. Their bodies were returned to Israel in 2008 in a prisoner deal with Hezbollah.Over that summer in 2006, 160 Israelis were killed, a majority of the them soldiers, and over 1,000 Lebanese lost their lives, including hundreds of civilians.Tensions between Hezbollah and Israel have remained high since then with both sides warning that the next round of violence would be costly to the other party.Hezbollah has been bogged down in nearby Syria, fighting alongside the Iranians and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.Israel has been closely monitoring the group’s defenses and capabilities and a number of airstrikes on weapons convoys over the six-year Syrian civil war have been attributed to Israel, which has vowed to prevent Hezbollah from attaining advanced weaponry from Iran via Syria.Israel has made efforts to bolster the Israel-Lebanon border area, a project which has been under way for some time. GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Hamas announced Thursday that it put to death three men accused of assassinating a senior member of the terror group in March.Mazen Faqha, a Hamas terror chief, was shot on March 24 outside his Gaza home. Hamas accuses the three suspects of collaborating with Israel and sentenced them to execution on Sunday.Israel has not confirmed or denied the accusations.Hamas’s Interior Ministry said two of the accused were hanged and one was killed by firing squad Thursday.The chief suspect, identified as Ashraf Abu Leila, 38, was sentenced to hang after being convicted of the murder in a Sunday court ruling. Hisham al-Aloul, 44, was also sentenced to hang, and Abdallah al-Nashar, faced the firing squad.A shaky video shot from a distance purporting to show the execution was circulating online and broadcast live on Facebook.The footage showed some sort of public square lined with black-clad men.Human Rights Watch condemned the executions in a statement.“Rushing to put men to death based on an unreviewable decision of a special military court days after announcing their arrests and airing videoed confessions smacks of militia rule, not the rule of law,” Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW’s Middle East director, said.“Reliance on confessions, in a system where coercion, torture and deprivation of detainee’s rights are prevalent, and other apparent due process violations further taint the court’s verdicts. Death as government-sanctioned punishment is inherently cruel and always wrong, no matter the circumstance.”After Faqha’s killing, Hamas set up checkpoints throughout Gaza and barred all residents and foreign aid workers from leaving the coastal strip and going to Israel.It has since eased some of the restrictions.The death of Faqha, a shadowy senior figure in Hamas’s military wing, shocked Hamas, which has ruled Gaza with an iron fist for the past decade.Faqha, 38, was killed in the garage of his apartment building in March after dropping off his family. Hamas said the killer used a weapon with a silencer, allowing him to escape undetected.Faqha had been in charge of forming cells for Hamas’s military wing the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades in the West Bank — overseeing, from Gaza, efforts to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets from the West Bank.He had spent years in an Israeli jail for terrorist activities including orchestrating a 2002 suicide bombing in which 9 Israelis were killed, before being released to Gaza as part of the 2011 Shalit prisoner exchange deal.Hamas accused Israel of killing Faqha through collaborators and launched a manhunt.Earlier this month, the group announced it arrested 45 alleged collaborators with Israel, including three purportedly involved in killing Faqha.
