Israeli plane diverts to Slovakia over oxygen problem-IsraAir passengers describe fear and confusion as masks came down with no explanations from crew; company insists landing was not an emergency-By Times of Israel staff May 30, 2017, 3:31 am

A chartered Israir flight from Warsaw to Tel Aviv was forced to land in Slovakia Monday after suffering problems with its oxygen supply, according to reports in Hebrew media. The plane, which according to The Marker was leased to Israir by a Czech lowcost company, landed safely in the city of Kosice, and passengers later boarded another flight to Israel.Passengers described an emergency situation, saying said they were forced to wear oxygen masks as the plane descended and were kept in the dark as to the nature of the problem for a lengthy period of time.Passenger Orly Zeevi told the NRG website: “We began feeling suffocated and a lack of air, the masks came down and there was mass hysteria. No one told us what was going on…we felt we were going to die any second.“Only after about 15 minutes the pilot, who apparently wasn’t even Israeli, spoke to us in English and said we were landing,” she recounted. “Those 15 minutes in which no one was telling us what was happening were an eternity for me.”Another unnamed passenger told The Marker: “If we knew we were buying Israir’s record and getting a foreign airline’s ramshackle plane, we would have thought twice before boarding.”Israir denied an emergency landing had taken place, saying the plane’s crew “identified a suspected pressurization problem. The crew decided not to continue [the flight] and diverted to a regular landing in Kosice airport. The plane landed a regular landing and there was no danger to the passengers or the plane.”

N. Korea claims progress in efforts to prepare missile ‘gifts’ for US-Pyongyang says latest test of precision-guided ballistic missile was ‘successful,’ after projectile lands in waters close to Japan-By AFP and Times of Israel staff May 30, 2017, 3:05 am

North Korea confirmed its test-firing of a precision-guided ballistic missile was “successful”, the state-run news agency KCNA reported Tuesday, a day after the projectile landed in waters provocatively close to Japan.North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un supervised the launch of the “new-type precision guided ballistic rocket” — the third missile test by the nuclear-armed regime in less than three weeks and carried out in defiance of UN sanctions warnings and US threats of possible military action.“The ballistic rocket flew toward the east sky where the day broke and correctly hit a planned target point… after flying over the middle shooting range,” the report said.South Korea’s military earlier said the Scud-type missile traveled eastward for 450 km (280 miles). Japan said it believed it had fallen into its exclusive economic zone, extending 200 nautical miles from the coast. The missile test triggered swift condemnation from US President Donald Trump who said it showed “disrespect” for neighboring China, the North’s sole major ally, which has sought to dampen tensions over Pyongyang’s weapons program. The launch was aimed at testing a weapon “capable of making ultra-precision strike on the enemies’ objects at any area”, the North Korean report said.“It also verified ultra-precision guidance correctness in the re-entry section,” it said.“Whenever news of our valuable victory is broadcast… the Yankees would be very much worried about it and the gangsters of the south Korean puppet army would be dispirited more and more,” the report quoted Kim as saying.Kim “expressed the conviction that [North Korea] would make a greater leap forward in this spirit to send bigger ‘gift packages’ to the Yankees” if provoked, the report added. It added that the projectile was showcased for the first time last month as part of Pyongyang’s annual military parade to mark the 105th birth anniversary of the regime’s founder Kim Il-Sung.Following North Korea’s test-firing earlier this month of what analysts said was its longest-range rocket yet, the UN Security Council vowed to push all countries to tighten sanctions against Pyongyang. But China has made it clear that the push for talks — and not more sanctions — is its priority. On Monday it pleaded again for dialogue.“We hope that related parties can remain calm and restrained, ease the tension on the peninsula, and bring the peninsula issue into the right track of peaceful dialogue again,” the Chinese foreign ministry said. The US has said it is willing to enter into talks only if the North halts its missile and nuclear tests.Several rounds of UN sanctions have done little to stop the isolated regime from pushing ahead with its ambition to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can deliver a nuclear warhead to the continental US.

Arrested cousin of Manchester bomber posted anti-Semitic messages on Facebook-In now-disabled account, Abderahman Forjani said ‘If only Hitler was still alive — these Jews would be burnt in chambers’-By JTA May 30, 2017, 4:11 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A cousin of the Manchester bomber arrested last week in connection with the attack that left 22 dead posted anti-Semitic messages on social media.Abderahman Forjani, 21, was arrested on May 23, hours after the suicide bomb attack by Salman Adedi outside the Manchester Arena at the end of a concert by American popstar Ariana Grande. His brother, Abdalla Forjani, also was arrested.London-based The Times reported on Monday that Abderahman Forjani had posted anti-Semitic messages on Facebook. His account has since been taken down.Among the Facebook posts were: “If only Hitler was still alive – these Jews would be burnt in chambers.”He further expressed animosity toward his hometown of Manchester. It also was reported on Monday that the bomber had prayed at Didsbury mosque in south Manchester, which was attended by at least two British members of the Islamic State group who had traveled to Syria. Some 14 people have been arrested in Britain in connection with the bomb attack.

Manchester attack transforms Britain’s election campaign-Security, rather than Brexit negotiations, has become dominant theme of June 8 race-By Jill Lawless May 30, 2017, 1:16 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

LONDON (AP) — Until a week ago, two things were widely agreed about Britain’s upcoming general election: it was producing the dullest campaign in recent memory and the result was a foregone conclusion. It would be a coronation march for Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May.Then a bomb blast killed 22 people at a concert in Manchester, bringing campaigning to a shocked halt. When the debates, ads and stump speeches resumed three days later, they were delivered to a jittery nation on a transformed political landscape.Security now is the dominant theme in a contest that was supposed to be about Britain’s exit from the European Union, with the main parties battling over which can keep Britain safer.History suggests the tragedy should further bolster May. Violent attacks usually produce a “rally-round-the-flag effect” that boosts support for government and state institutions, Manchester University political science Professor Rob Ford said. While campaigning was suspended, May remained highly visible in her role as head of government, making several televised statements that were praised as somber and steadying.Yet the pause also seems to have solidified concerns about the lackluster campaign May was running before the suicide bombing at Manchester Arena. Polls which had given the prime minister’s Tories as much as a 20-point lead over the left-leaning Labour Party have narrowed into the single figures. The Guardian newspaper noted that Conservative confidence has been replaced by “the palpable sense of a Tory wobble.”May is an unelected and relatively untested prime minister. The Conservative Party picked her to replace Prime Minister David Cameron after his unexpected resignation in the wake of Britain’s vote last June to leave the EU. May called an early election in a bid to increase her parliamentary majority and strengthen her hand in Brexit negotiations. It seemed a low-risk gamble. Polls suggested voters regarded May as a stronger leader than Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, an old-fashioned socialist. Many Labour members harbor concerns about Corbyn, and the Conservatives were confident voters would reject seemingly outmoded Labour promises such as raising taxes on the wealthy and re-nationalizing industries. But from the start, May was accused of running a tightly controlled and uninspiring campaign. She made speeches to hand-picked audiences and batted away awkward questions by falling back on her oft-repeated slogan “strong and stable government.”May also made several unforced errors. She said she would give Parliament a vote on reversing the ban on fox hunting — a statement that reinforced the Conservatives’ status in many minds as the party of the wealthy. Then the party proposed changing the way pensioners pay for long-term care — a policy the opposition quickly labeled as a “dementia tax.” The proposal alarmed many of the older people who form the bedrock of Conservative support. May was forced to make an embarrassing partial reversal.“Theresa May’s ‘strong and stable’ has proven to be an albatross around her neck,” said Steven Fielding, a professor of political history at Nottingham University. “It’s something that people now contrast with the reality, rather than showing the reality.”Labour, meanwhile, has outperformed expectations. Its focus on pouring more money into education and Britain’s overstretched national health service has resonated with many voters.“People expected the Labour campaign to fall apart, and it hasn’t happened,” Fielding said. With less than two weeks until polling day on June 8, the heightened focus on security has risks for both parties.Authorities have acknowledged that British-born suicide bomber Salman Abedi was peripherally on the security services’ radar, so voters could blame the Conservative government for failing to prevent the attack.Labour has criticized the cuts to police budgets May made while she was home secretary between 2010 and 2016, a period that saw the number of police officers across the country fall by almost 20,000.The Conservatives, meanwhile, have ramped up accusations that Corbyn would weaken Britain’s defenses. They have repeatedly underscored his opposition to Britain’s nuclear weapons and appearances alongside Irish republicans, even in the years when the IRA was setting off bombs in Britain. In a speech on Friday, Corbyn argued that British foreign policy had helped fuel terrorism. He said intelligence and security experts “have pointed to the connections between wars our government has supported or fought in other countries and terrorism here at home.”Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said Corbyn’s comment amounted to justifying terrorism, and argued Sunday that Britain would be “less safe if Jeremy Corbyn was prime minister.”Political commentators say such intense verbal assaults show the Conservatives are worried. In Sunday’s Observer newspaper, columnist Andrew Rawnsley said a campaign organized around the projection of May as “the Supreme Leader” had backfired by exposing her flaws.“She is still on course to win, but it will not be the unvarnished victory that she was looking for when she began this campaign,” he wrote.

German FM: Trump has ‘weakened’ the West, hurt EU interests-Sigmar Gabriel says US policies on climate change, weapons sales and conflicts ‘is putting peace in Europe at risk’-By Damien Stroka May 30, 2017, 2:41 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

BERLIN (AFP) — Germany unleashed a volley of criticism Monday against US President Donald Trump, slamming his “short-sighted” policies that have “weakened the West” and hurt European interests. The sharp words from Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel came after Trump concluded his first official tour abroad which took him to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Brussels and then Italy for a G7 summit. They followed Chancellor Angela Merkel’s warning on Sunday that the United States and Britain may no longer be completely reliable partners.Germany’s exasperation was laid bare after the G7 summit which wrapped up on Saturday with the US refusing so far to sign up to upholding the 2015 Paris climate accord.Days earlier, in Saudi Arabia, Trump had presided over the single largest US arms deal in American history, worth $110 billion over the next decade and including ships, tanks and anti-missile systems.Gabriel said Monday that “anyone who accelerates climate change by weakening environmental protection, who sells more weapons in conflict zones and who does not want to politically resolve religious conflicts is putting peace in Europe at risk”.“The short-sighted policies of the American government stand against the interests of the European Union,” he said, judging that “the West has become smaller, at least it has become weaker”.“We Europeans must fight for more climate protection, fewer weapons and against religious (fanaticism), otherwise the Middle East and Africa will be further destabilized,” Gabriel said.Germany’s harsh words for Washington, traditionally a close ally, were highly unusual and came as relations have grown increasingly frosty. When Trump was inaugurated in January, Merkel had told the billionaire and former reality TV show star that cooperation would be on the basis of shared democratic values. The relationship between Merkel and Trump contrasts with the warm ties between her and former US president Barack Obama — who last week travelled to Berlin to attend a key Protestant conference.Obama’s participation in a forum with Merkel last Thursday came hours before her meeting with Trump in Brussels at the NATO summit. At the alliance’s meeting on Thursday, Trump lambasted 23 of the alliance’s 28 members — including Germany — for “still not paying what they should be paying” towards the funding of the bloc. After the NATO and G7 summits, Merkel said at an election rally in southern Germany that “the times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I’ve experienced that in the last few days.”“We, the Europeans, will have to take our fate into our own hands. Our friendship with the US, the UK, our neighborly relationship with Russia and also with other countries count, of course. But we must know, we have to fight for our own future,” she said.In response to Merkel’s comments, Britain said it would be a “strong partner” to Germany.“As we begin the negotiations about leaving the EU, we will be able to reassure Germany and other European countries that we are going to be a strong partner to them in defence and security and, we hope, in trade,” Britain’s interior minister Amber Rudd told BBC radio.“We can reassure Mrs. Merkel that we want to have a deep and special partnership so that we can continue to maintain European-wide security to keep us all safe from the terrorists abroad and those that are trying to be nurtured in our country,” she said.Separately, France’s Defense Minister Sylvie Goulard said that Trump’s broadside at NATO allies could boost efforts toward a common European defense policy.“At a time when we want to take steps forward for Europe and its defense, it is a spur,” said Goulard.European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker “supports building bridges,” spokesman Margaritis Schinas said, while the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Twitter he “agreed” with Merkel that “Europe’s destiny is in our own hands.”

Iran denies Trump’s claims it sponsors terrorism-Tehran says US accusations that it is a major backer of extremist groups throughout the Middle East are ‘incorrect and irrelevant’-By Times of Israel staff May 30, 2017, 2:24 am

Iran on Monday dismissed US President Donald Trump’s allegations that it is a major sponsor of terrorism as “incorrect and irrelevant.”Trump, during his recent trip to Saudi Arabia, accused Tehran of spearheading global terror. Along with Saudi King Salman he called for the Islamic Republic to be shunned.“From Lebanon to Iraq to Yemen, Iran funds, arms and trains terrorists, militias and other extremist groups that spread destruction and chaos across the region,” Trump said.Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi dismissed the accusations during a press briefing.“These improper, incorrect and irrelevant positions of certain countries are nothing new and they try to project the blame on others and such remarks are unbelievable and unacceptable,” he said.According to the Fars news agency, Qassemi also questioned how Tehran could be a sponsor of terror when it had just recently proven to the world its democratic bona fides with its presidential elections.Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed Saturday that Saudi Arabia’s monarchy faces “certain downfall” for aligning itself with the US and that its regime could be toppled sooner rather than later.“They will be gone, they can be toppled and can perish [or be destroyed]… there is no doubt about it… it is certain that it will happen,” Khamnei said during a religious gathering in comments translated from Persian. In further scathing remarks against Riyadh, Khamenei said the Muslim world has been placed in “grave danger” by “a group of worthless, inept and villainous people [who] are ruling over a community of the Muslim nation, namely the Saudi government.”Khamenei also said that Saudi Arabia is a “cow being milked” by the United States, a week after the kingdom signed an $110 billion weapons deal with Trump during his visit last Saturday. Private sector and other agreements with the US totaled some $350 billion.Majority Shiite Iran and predominantly Sunni Saudi Arabia support opposite sites in the conflicts in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East.AP contributed to this report.

North Miami Beach Jewish school evacuated over bomb threat-Fax sent to institution demands $25,000 in ransom; police find no explosives at scene-By JTA May 30, 2017, 3:42 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A Jewish day school in North Miami Beach was evacuated following a bomb threat. The Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes school, which has enrolled 600 students from early childhood to high school, received a fax on Sunday demanding $25,000 in ransom and threatening to detonate explosives already in place at the school if the demand was not met, WSVN News 7 reported late Sunday. The message warned school officials not to call police, saying if they do so “I’ll know.” The letter also said that the would-be bomber had access to the school’s computers and email addresses, according to The Yeshiva World news website. The letter demanded that the money be sent to a certain address in the United States via Western Union by May 31.Roads near the school campus were shut down and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the area. No bombs were found.

Merkel warns US, Britain no longer reliable partners-With the West divided by Brexit and Trump’s presidency, German leader urges Europe to ‘take its fate into its own hands’-By AFP May 28, 2017, 7:12 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

FRANKFURT, Germany — Europe “must take its fate into its own hands” faced with a Western alliance divided by Brexit and Donald Trump’s presidency, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday.“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I’ve experienced that in the last few days,” Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.“We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands,” she added. While Germany and Europe would strive to remain on good terms with America and Britain, “we have to fight for our own destiny,” Merkel went on.Special emphasis was needed on warm relations between Berlin and newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron, she said. The chancellor had just returned from a G7 summit which wound up Saturday without a deal between the US and the other six major advanced nations on upholding the 2015 Paris climate accords.Merkel on Saturday labeled the result of the “six against one” discussion “very difficult, not to say very unsatisfactory.”Trump offered a more positive assessment on Twitter Sunday, writing: “Just returned from Europe. Trip was a great success for America. Hard work but big results!”The US president had earlier tweeted that he would reveal whether or not the US would stick to the global emissions deal — which he pledged to jettison on the campaign trail — only next week.On a previous leg of his first trip abroad as president, Trump had repeated past criticism of NATO allies for failing to meet the defensive alliance’s military spending commitment of two percent of GDP.Observers noted that he neglected to publicly endorse the pact’s Article Five, which guarantees that member countries will aid the others they are attacked. The omission was especially striking as he unveiled a memorial to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the US, the only time the mutual defense clause has been triggered.Trump also reportedly described German trade practices as “bad, very bad,” in Brussels talks last week, complaining that Europe’s largest economy sells too many cars to the US.Sunday’s event saw Merkel renew bonds with the Christian Social Union (CSU), Bavarian sister party to her own center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), ahead of a parliamentary vote in September.Polls show the chancellor, in power since 2005, on course to be re-elected for a fourth term.

President 'awed by the faith and reverence' of the people of the Holy Land-Trump: Netanyahu, Abbas vowed to reach for peace — I believe they mean it-Ending his first foreign trip, US leader says it was a ‘home run’ on every front; ‘All children from all faiths deserve a future of hope and peace’-By Times of Israel staff and AP May 27, 2017, 7:34 pm

Summarizing his first foreign trip as president, Donald Trump on Saturday said Israeli and Palestinian leaders had told him they were willing to “reach for peace,” and added that he believed their pledges to be sincere.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas “assured me he is willing to reach for peace with Israel in good faith, and I believe he will,” Trump told US troops in Sicily, in a speech where he recounted his visits to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Belgium and Italy, and his work to counter terrorism.“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured me that he too was ready to reach for peace. He’s a friend of mine and he means it,” Trump said, standing in front of a massive American flag at Naval Air Station Sigonella.“All children from all faiths deserve a future of hope and peace, a future that does honor to God,” he said. The US leader said he had reaffirmed America’s “unbreakable bond with the state of Israel” and said that he and Netanyahu “continued our discussion about fighting terrorism and crushing the organizations and ideologies that drive it.”He added that he was “awed by the majesty and beauty of the Holy Land and the faith and reverence of the devoted people who live there.”Trump called his maiden first trip abroad a “home run” and vowed to overcome the threat of terrorism, concluding a grueling five-stop sprint that ended with the promise of an imminent decision on the much-discussed Paris climate accord. The president said recent terrorist attacks in Manchester, England and Egypt underscored the need for the US to “defeat terrorism and protect civilization.”“Terrorism is a threat, bad threat to all of humanity,” Trump said. “And together we will overcome this threat. We will win.”Trump tweeted earlier in the day that he would make a final decision next week on whether to withdraw from the climate pact. European leaders he met with at the Group of 7 summit in Sicily have been pressuring Trump to stay in the accord, arguing that America’s leadership on climate is crucial.Besides reaching a decision on the climate agreement once back in Washington, Trump will also face a new crush of Russia-related controversies. On Friday, the Washington Post reported that Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner spoke with Russia’s ambassador to the US about setting up secret communications with Moscow.Trump held no news conferences during the nine-day trip, which allowed him to avoid questions about the Russia investigations. His top economic and national security advisers refused to answer questions about Kushner during a press briefing Saturday. The White House had hoped to use Trump’s five-stop trip as a moment to reset. The president was warmly received on his opening stops in Saudi Arabia and Israel, though he has come under more pressure in Europe, particularly over the Paris accord.Trump was cajoled for three days — first in Brussels at meetings of NATO and the European Union, then in Sicily for G7 — but will leave Italy without making clear where he stands. As the G7 summit came to a close Saturday, the six other members — Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan — renewed their commitment to the accord. The summit’s communique noted that the Trump administration would take more time to consider whether it will remain committed to the 2015 Paris deal to rein in greenhouse gas emissions.Backing out of the climate accord had been a central plank of Trump’s campaign and aides have been exploring whether they can adjust the framework of the deal even if they don’t opt out entirely. Other G-7 nations leaned heavily on Trump to stay in the climate deal, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying “we put forward very many arguments.”The president’s trip has largely gone off without a major misstep, with the administration touting the president’s efforts to birth a new coalition to fight terrorism, while admonishing partners in an old alliance to pay their fair share.“I think we hit a home run no matter where we are,” Trump told the soldiers. He also touted his meetings with NATO members, adding, “We’re behind NATO all the way.” He reiterated a renewed commitment by NATO members to spend more on defense.Trump was referring to a vow by NATO countries to move toward spending 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense by 2024. Only five of NATO’s 28 members meet the target: Britain, Estonia, debt-laden Greece, Poland and the United States, which spends more on defense than all the other allies combined.“The US is currently paying much more than any other nation and that is not fair to the United States or the United States taxpayer. So we’re working on it and I will tell you, a big difference over the last year, money is actually starting to pour into NATO from countries that would not have been doing what they’re doing now had I not been elected, I can tell you that. Money is starting to pour in,” Trump said, echoing a tweet earlier Saturday on the subject. There is no evidence that money has begun to “pour in” and countries do not pay the US or NATO directly. But Germany, for instance, has been increasing its defense spending with the goal of reaching the 2 percent target by 2024.After the pomp of presidential travel overseas, Trump will return to Washington and many of the problems he left behind. As a newly appointed special counsel is beginning to investigate links between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, Kushner has become a focus of the probe. Kushner’s lawyer said he will cooperate with investigators.James Comey, the former FBI director who led the Russian probe until Trump abruptly fired him, is still expected to testify before Congress about memos he kept on conversations with the president that involved the investigation. Meanwhile, the search for a new FBI director continues. And Trump’s policy agenda has run into problems. The GOP health care bill that passed the House faces uncertain prospects in the Senate after a Congressional Budget Office analysis that it would leave 23 million more Americans uninsured by 2026. The president’s budget was widely criticized for deep cuts to safety net programs. And some are starting to question the chances for Trump’s pledge to overhaul the US tax code.

Netanyahu cautions, ‘We don’t have a blank check from Trump’-Prime minister tells his Likud party meeting that Israel must act with caution since the US president expects a peace deal with the Palestinians-By Stuart Winer May 29, 2017, 5:54 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday cautioned that although the current US administration is very understanding of Israel’s needs, the country doesn’t have a “blank check” to do as it wishes concerning the Palestinians.Speaking at his Likud faction weekly meeting, Netanyahu stressed that US President Donald Trump is set on seeing peace between Israel and the Palestinians and hinted that the American leader expects the Jewish state to be accommodating.“I want to tell you, we don’t have a blank check on the political level,”Netanyahu reportedly told Likud lawmakers at a closed-door meeting in the Knesset in Jerusalem.“We are a sovereign country, we can decide on many things and declare many things, but as far as the consent of the Americans goes I would not go that far,” multiple Hebrew media outlets quoted Netanyahu as saying.“It is true that there are warm relations and there is a lot of understanding for our basic positions, but it is not true that we have a blank check, and that is far from the reality,” he said.Trump’s election was greeted with joy in the Israeli government, particularly on its right flank, which argued that this was an opportunity for Israel to annex large parts of the West Bank and begin a massive program of building in the settlements and Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem. But Trump has since asked Israel to restrain settlement construction and is pushing for the two sides to resume peace talks.Trump last week made a 28-hour visit to Israel during which he also traveled to the West Bank to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. In the wake of the visit there have been media reports that Trump is pushing hard to soon announce the restarting of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in coordination with a warming of ties between Israel and moderate Arab states.“We now need to act very wisely and with responsibility. Even more than that, we need to do so especially now. You heard President Trump, he came here and did very important things and touched the soul, but he also said that he believes that Abbas wants peace. He said that he believes that it is possible to reach a deal and that we need to reach it. We are in that situation,” Netanyahu said. Before Trump’s arrival, coalition lawmakers and ministers — including Netanyahu himself — had publicly called for Trump to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a measure that would be seen as recognition of the city as Israel’s capital. Trump made no reference at to the embassy during his visit. He did, however, become the first serving US president to visit the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem, but he made it clear it was a private visit as American officials rejected a request that Netanyahu accompany him.In March, Israel agreed to self-imposed restrictions on new settlement construction in what was seen as a gesture to the Trump administration after months-long negotiations between the two sides failed to yield any formal understanding on the matter. The White House at the time said it “welcomed” the curb, cautioning Israel against engaging in large-scale construction projects.

Lapid: Entire Israeli security establishment is worried by Trump’s Saudi arms deal-Kowtowing to US president, Netanyahu left Israel vulnerable by failing to prevent or even criticize massive, dangerous DC-Riyadh accord, says Yesh Atid leader-By Raoul Wootliff and Raphael Ahren May 29, 2017, 2:49 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid said Monday that the entire Israeli security establishment is deeply concerned by US President Donald Trump’s massive arms deal with Saudi Arabia, and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed Israel’s national security because he neither prevented nor tried to minimize the damage of the accord. The approximately $110 billion weapons deal is the largest in American history and includes advanced air defense systems, ships, helicopters, intelligence-gathering aircraft, tanks, artillery and cybersecurity systems, according to the US State Department.Speaking to The Times of Israel at our offices in Jerusalem, Lapid said that the way Netanyahu addressed the deal, both before it was announced and after, was “almost reckless” and ignored key Israeli security concerns. Under internal political pressure for Trump’s visit to Israel to appear a flawless success, Lapid said, the prime minster neglected to protect Israel’s interests in the region.Lapid said Israel did not know about the deal ahead of time — but it would have, had there been a properly functioning Foreign Ministry and a full-time foreign minister. And he raised specific concerns about some of the materiel that is being supplied to the Saudis. “Saudi Arabia is the most powerful Sunni country. Terrorist groups like Islamic State and Al Qaeda are Sunni, and millions of people in the country support Islamic State and Al Qaeda,” Lapid noted. “So even if the threat doesn’t come from Saudi Arabia itself, these weapons are an inch away from the Sunni terrorists.”In particular, Lapid highlighted the strategic partnership agreement, announced as part of the deal, between Raytheon, the contractor representing Israel for sales of the Iron Dome anti-rocket system to the US, and the Saudi government. Under the agreement, Raytheon will build Saudi Arabia a cybersecurity center that Lapid is worried may one day be used to carry out cyberattacks against Israel.“This worries me because once you give them the cyber ability, you cannot tell them that they can only direct it towards Iran. No, it’s going to be directed towards Israel as well,” he said emphatically. The offensive cyber capabilities that Saudi Arabia will receive as part of the accord could cause untold havoc in Israel, Lapid warned. “They could shut down the electricity in the room we are sitting in,” he said. “They could penetrate Israel’s Defense Ministry.”Lapid, a former finance minister who sits on the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee’s subcommittee on security and intelligence matters, said he was not alone in his bleak analysis of the deal, and there was deep concern in “the entire security establishment.”“When the minister of defense is saying the opposite thing from the prime minister, you know that something is wrong. The Israeli military establishment is worried. This is a big deal,” he added. One of the most notable aspects of the deal is that the Saudis will receive the Americans’ Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile system. This is the same type of battery that the US recently deployed in South Korea to help defend it against an increasingly aggressive Pyongyang. Lapid said the worry is not just in Saudi Arabia owning the system, but in the possibility of it being deployed across the Middle East and therefore limiting Israel’s aerial superiority in the region.“Netanyahu was under pressure for this visit to be successful for domestic political reasons,” Lapid said. And “there’s nothing wrong with fully embracing the president.“Yet, I am concerned about the things that weren’t done,” he said. “I understand that everybody wanted to have a perfect visit. And yet, is is part of policy to tell the American president, ‘Listen, we appreciate the friendship, but we are unhappy with the fact that you’re selling arms to the Saudis for $110 billion without even consulting us.'”By not doing so, Netanyahu “ignored what is essential Israeli security,” according to Lapid, who said that the prime minister was desperate for Trump’s visit to Israel to be a success. “Our defense minister said he is very worried, and the Prime Minister’s Office said there is nothing to worry about. Who should we believe? [Defense Minister Avigdor] Liberman, who represents the entire Israeli defense system, or the Prime Minster’s Office, which was preoccupied with the fact that they don’t want to ruin the visit.”Following Trump’s visit to Israel last week, Liberman said he was uneasy over the deal announced over the weekend when the US president was in Riyadh and believed it was part of a “crazy” regional arms race. “I’m not at peace with any arms race and the huge Saudi purchase for sure doesn’t add much to our peace of mind,” Liberman said in an interview with Army Radio last Wednesday, adding that he had expressed his concerns in recent talks with US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster.Hours later, Netanyahu said the US had agreed to boost the defense aid it gives to Israel and would ensure that the country maintained its qualitative advantage. But Lapid said that if he were prime minister, he would have worked to prevent the deal from happening in the first place and publicly spoken out against it.“First of all I would have the kind of functional Foreign Ministry that would make sure we know these things in advance, not finding out during the ceremony in Riyadh. And I would have a foreign minister who is capable of talking to the State Department,” he said. Since the 2015 elections, Netanyahu has resisted appointing a full-time foreign minister, instead holding the position himself.According to Lapid, had Israel known the extent of the deal beforehand, efforts could have been made via AIPAC and US lawmakers to put pressure on the Trump administration. “There are a bunch of things that could have been done, and none of them were,” he said.Beyond the general types of weapons and systems that will be sold, many of the specifics about the deal have yet to be released, he noted. But a large influx of advanced military technology into the region should be of the utmost concern to Israel and therefore to the United States, which must continue to preserve the Jewish state’s “qualitative military edge” — its military advantage over surrounding Middle East countries, Lapid said.Speaking later Monday, at the Yesh Atid faction meeting at the Knesset, Lapid said Netanyahu now needs to confront Trump on the deal.“The prime minister must demand public, not private, explanations, from the US president and his staff,” Lapid said, urging the Israeli security establishment to push for a compensation package from the Pentagon to uphold its regional military edge.“The prime minister must stop being afraid of President Trump’s short fuse and tell him publicly: ‘For you it is a question of money and jobs — for us it’s a matter of life and death,'” he said.Trump has said that he believes Saudi Arabia could be a key player in helping moderate the region, and was “deeply encouraged” during his visit to the kingdom by the prospect that Riyadh could help Israel reach a deal with the Palestinians.King Salman, Trump said, would “love to see peace between Israel and the Palestinians.”“Many [Muslim leaders] expressed their resolve to help end terrorism and the spread of radicalization. There’s a growing realization among your Arab neighbors that they have common cause with you on this threat posed by Iran — and it is a threat, make no mistake about that,” Trump said during a meeting with President Reuven Rivlin at his residence in Jerusalem.Lapid, while praising Trump’s efforts, warned against over-confidence.“I would be a little more cautious saying there is a readiness to a process that will lead to an agreement,” he told The Times of Israel. “The US is not only an honest broker, but it is the broker we want. And when your biggest ally is talking you want to listen. But when push comes to shove, Israel and Israel alone will determine what’s good and what’s bad for us. And we cannot be forced to do anything which hurts our security.”While opposition leader Isaac Herzog openly declared that he’d back the Netanyahu coalition if a peace deal were in the cards, Lapid was adamant that he would never join the current prime minister’s government, even if it meant forcing new elections. “I am not joining this coalition. I could have been foreign minister now for two years and I decided not to. I don’t think it’s the right government for Israel, so I will not join it.”Lapid added that elections every two and half a years are not good for Israel. “But this government is even worse,” he said. “When elections are due, it is time for us to determine what kind of country we want to live in.”Judah Ari Gross and Marissa Newman contributed to this report.

Terror-hunting attorney sets her sights on Western Union and Boeing-Nitsana Darshan-Leitner to discuss ‘lawfare’ tactics at live English event in Jerusalem on June 4-By Matthew Kalman May 29, 2017, 5:39 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Western Union and Boeing had better look out. The American giants are in the cross-hairs of an Israeli lawyer with a track record of humbling huge corporations and winning multi-million-dollar settlements for her clients.Attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner has spent the past decade filing lawsuits for the victims of terror attacks against the governments, banks and corporations that enabled or financed the violence. As a result of her efforts, more than $200 million has been collected for terror victims and their families (including out of court settlements), and some $600 million in assets has been frozen.Darshan-Leitner has also used the courts to fight against what she considers to be unfair lawsuits against Israeli military commanders. In one notable case, she stopped a Spanish lawsuit against Israel’s Chief of Staff Dan Halutz over a bombing raid in Gaza by filing a similar suit against Javier Solana, a top Spanish politician who had overseen NATO’s bombing of Kosovo. Spain changed the law.The Bar-Ilan University-educated mother of six will speak about her work in a live interview in Jerusalem on Sunday, June 4 in our next Times of Israel Presents event, produced in association with Nefesh B’Nefesh. (Book tickets HERE).Last year, she won an unprecedented $655 million verdict against the Palestinian Authority and PLO on behalf of 11 American families whose loved ones had been killed or injured in attacks in Israel. That decision was overturned by the US Court of Appeal, but Darshan-Leitner says she is not deterred.Darshan-Leitner and Shurat Hadin, the non-profit law center she heads, are self-funding and do not receive backing from any government, including that of Israel. Sometimes she can be more effective even than the Israeli army: In 2011, she prevented a Gaza-bound activists’ flotilla from leaving Greece after challenging the seaworthiness of the vessels in a local court. Now she has discovered that Lebanon-based terrorist group Hezbollah is using Western Union to channel funds, and Iran is planning to use Boeing aircraft to deliver missiles to Syria. She plans to sue them both.“Hezbollah is launching a fundraising campaign and using Western Union to accept the donations, so one of the moves that we are planning is to go after Western Union,” says Darshan-Leitner. “In addition, we learned that Boeing not only signed a horrible deal with Iran providing them with 80 aircraft with a special waiver for the sanctions, Iran actually is using these aircraft to deliver missiles into Syria and let Hezbollah drive them to South Lebanon to shoot them over Israel.“We are suing Boeing now to stop the deal, and we are launching a campaign to put pressure on the administration not to let Boeing continue,” she says.Darshan-Leitner is also suing Facebook, Twitter and other social media giants for their alleged role in “facilitating” terror activity.“Facebook, Twitter and Google provide material support in the form of social media network services to Hamas, to ISIS. This is unacceptable. It’s also a violation of American law. So we’ve filed lawsuits against them as well,” she says. Are the courts the right battleground to fight terrorism? Does her work encourage Israel’s enemies to resort to their own “lawfare” against Israeli targets? We’ll be asking those questions and more when we interview Darshan-Leitner on June 4.Join us for what promises to be a fascinating conversation and the chance to meet one of Israel’s most dynamic lawyers.-NITSANA DARSHAN-LEITNER-In conversation with Matthew Kalman-8 pm, at Beit Shmuel’s Hirsch Theater-6 Eliyahu Shama Street, Jerusalem-60 NIS (Advance tickets 50 NIS HERE)-In association with Nefesh B’Nefesh. For details of all our future events, join our mailing list by sending the word “subscribe” to events@timesofisrael.com

Netanyahu praises Norway for defunding women’s center named for terrorist-Prime minister says he urged Scandinavian country to act after Palestinians honored woman who helped kill 38 civilians in terror attack-By Marissa Newman May 29, 2017, 6:28 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday praised Norway for withdrawing funding from a Palestinian women’s center named for a terrorist who took part in the 1978 Coastal Road massacre. The prime minister said Israel had made a point of pressing nations and organizations over this issue and would continue to do so.Dalal Mughrabi and several other Fatah terrorists landed on a beach near Tel Aviv, hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Road and killed 38 civilians, 13 of them children, and wounded over 70. The new West Bank center, which opened last month and was funded in part by the Scandinavian country, was named in her honor. The prime minister revealed during the weekly meeting of his Likud parliamentary faction that he instructed Foreign Ministry director-general Yuval Rotem several days ago to press Norway and the United Nations to pull their donations from the West Bank project.Norway’s foreign minister “did precisely that. And it’s good that he did,” the prime minister said.He said “according to his understanding,” the UN will also distance itself from the organization. The UN issued a statement on Sunday condemning the center.“We implement this policy even with regard to our closest friends, and warn them we cannot accept it that friendly governments support organizations that glorify terrorism and act against IDF soldiers,” Netanyahu said. “It’s a process.”On Friday Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende said that Norway had been unaware of the decision to name the center after Mughrabi. He demanded that the country’s name be removed from the center and that the funds it gave for construction be returned.“We have asked for the logo of the Norwegian representation office to be removed from the building immediately, and for the funding that has been allocated to the center to be repaid,” he said.Brende also said that Norway would no longer participate in similar projects until the country receives assurances “that nothing of this nature happens again.”At the faction meeting Netanyahu also defended his new policy to boycott foreign leaders who meet with left-leaning NGOs, which Israel accuses of setting up Israeli soldiers for future prosecution in foreign tribunals.“You can meet me. But you cannot meet with these organizations and also meet with me,” he said, adding that this message is sinking in.“Our soldiers protect us. And we will protect them,” he concluded.Last month, Netanyahu canceled on short notice a meeting with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel over the latter’s refusal to abort a planned meeting with Breaking the Silence — which Netanyahu has denounced as a group trying to get Israeli soldiers tried for war crimes.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Talks underway for possible pope visit to Israel to push peace — report-Francis may travel to region in the fall to advocate accord; advance delegation said expected next month-By Times of Israel staff May 26, 2017, 12:23 am

Israeli and Vatican officials have launched talks to discuss the possibility of Pope Francis paying a visit to Israel and the wider region in a bid to push peace between Israelis and Palestinians.A Vatican delegation is expected in Israel next month and is looking at three possible dates for a potential visit this coming fall, Channel 10 reported Thursday, citing unnamed Vatican sources. There was no immediate confirmation from the Vatican. The report came a day after the pope met with US President Donald Trump in Rome. Trump on Tuesday wrapped up a Middle East visit that included Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Saudi Arabia. In Israel, Trump indicated that he wants to pursue the “ultimate deal” and would like to help facilitate peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. He has tasked his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and former real estate lawyer Jason Greenblatt with charting a course forward. Greenblatt stayed on after the trip and has been holding follow-up meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials. After his “fantastic” meeting with the pope on Wednesday, the US president vowed to pursue peace around the world. The pontiff has repeatedly called on Israelis and Palestinians to seek a peace deal, most recently in January. The pope visited Israel in 2014, embarking on a three-day trip that also saw him visit the Palestinian Authority. In Israel, he prayed at the Western Wall, leaving a handwritten note with the “Our Father” prayer written in his native Spanish, honored Holocaust victims by kissing the hands of several survivors, and accepted Israel’s request to pray at a memorial to victims of suicide bombings and other attacks.

In letter read out to protesters, Abbas says 'The time has come to live in peace, harmony, security and stability'-Thousands rally for peace in Tel Aviv amid renewed US efforts-Herzog calls for Kulanu, Yesh Atid parties to join ‘one big political bloc’ as left-wing leaders slam government’s diplomatic inaction-By Times of Israel staff May 27, 2017, 10:00 pm

Thousands of people participated in a pro-peace demonstration in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square Saturday to mark “50 years of occupation,” under the banner of “Two States — One Hope.”Estimates of the crowd size varied between 15,000 and 20,000. Organizers claimed around 30,000 demonstrators were present. At the protest, leaders of the Israeli left lambasted the country’s right-wing government and its policies and called for new, bold leadership that would take steps towards peace.Opposition leader Isaac Herzog called on the leaders of the Yesh Atid and Kulanu parties to “put ego aside and join together into one big political bloc” that could replace the current government. (Centrist Yesh Atid is in the opposition; center-right Kulanu is in the coalition.)“Together, only together… can we win, and come to power,” he said. Taking the stage, Herzog, whose leadership of the center-left Zionist Union will be challenged by several candidates in a vote on July 4, was met with audible booing from some in the crowd.Herzog spoke of the reported efforts last year to push forward a secret regional peace deal, which he has claimed were thwarted by Netanyahu’s political insecurities.“Not many months ago, Israel stood before a historic opportunity. We could have launched an unprecedented regional negotiation that would have boosted Israel’s security, that would have brought us out of isolation, that would have created and unprecedented regional coalition and would have led to peace,” he said.“And why was this opportunity missed? Because the leadership Israel has today is motivated primarily by fear — fear of change, fear of daring, fear of initiative and fear of hope.”In a letter read out at the event, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said: “The time has come to live — both you and us — in peace, harmony, security and stability.“The only way way to end the conflict and the fight against terror in the region and the world is a two-state solution based on the June 1967 borders, Palestine by Israel’s side,” Abbas said in the note. “Our duty towards future generations is to conclude a peace of the brave.”Meretz leader Zehava Galon said Prime Minister Benjamin “Netanyahu is lying when tells us, for a decade now, that he can manage the conflict. That ‘there is no other choice’ and ‘no partner.’ He plays the victim, shows no courage or diplomatic initiative and flees from responsibility and risk-taking. This lie must be eliminated — because it is only meant for his political survival.“Despite Netanyahu’s lies, the Israeli public supports compromise, ending the occupation and says yes to two states for two peoples,” she added.Peace Now Director-General Avi Buskila said 50 years of pro-settlement policies were “endangering our future and burying the Zionist dream” while undermining Israeli democracy.“For years we have allowed a hollow, irresponsible and out-of-control leadership to push us into the abyss,” Buskila said. “Today we are putting an end to it… today we, the citizens of democratic Israel, rise from the trenches to defend our home.“This is the time to illustrate to Israelis, to the Palestinians and to the world that a large portion of the Israeli public opposes the occupation and seeks to arrive at a two-state solution,” said Buskila. “A clear message will come out of Rabin Square: Yes to hope, yes to two states, no to occupation, no to annexation, and yes to a better future for both Israelis and Palestinians.”Ayman Odeh, head of the Joint (Arab) List, said “I chose to be here today, because I believe we must find a way to fight together.“Now, in the face of the increasingly radical right-wing government, a government that uses minorities as a punching bag, a government that incites again and again… now, in the face of annexation plots, and racist and anti-democratic legislation… we must form a public democratic camp around our common principles — with a clear call for the end of the occupation, for equality, democracy and social justice for all citizens.”Odeh said that for coexistence to be possible, “I must respect and accept your national identity. You must do so as well. This partnership can only be built from mutual respect and an acceptance of the identities of each and every one of us.”He added: “In order to bring about change, we need courage. We must have the courage to fight together for the future we believe in.”Channel 2 news reported Friday night that with US President Donald Trump pushing for peace progress, Netanyahu is again looking to widen his coalition by bringing in politicians from the center-left.The report said that Netanyahu and Herzog spoke by phone on the eve of Trump’s visit to Israel this week, and have arranged to meet in the aftermath of Trump’s trip. Herzog, who met with Trump briefly on Tuesday, has said repeatedly in the last few days that he would back Netanyahu — from outside the coalition — were the prime minister to push for substantive progress in peacemaking with the Palestinians.Netanyahu is working to broaden his coalition because he wants room for maneuver should direct Israeli-Palestinian talks resume, said the TV report, which was not confirmed.Ahead of the rally Saturday, Herzog denied there were any talks on the Zionist Union joining the coalition.“If there is a [peace] process and it is serious, ask me about supporting the initiative from the opposition, not from the government,” he said. The report coincided with a new poll showing more Israelis backing than opposing a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 lines. The survey showed Israelis supporting a two-state accord deal with the Palestinians, based on the 1967 borders adjusted to include the major settlement blocs, by 47% to 39%, with 14% undecided.Trump reiterated on his May 22-23 visit here that he seeks to broker an Israeli-Palestinian accord. While Netanyahu highlighted his skepticism about Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s readiness for a deal, he did tell Trump that “for the first time in many years — and, Mr. President, for the first time in my lifetime — I see a real hope for change.”For his part, Trump was adamant in his final speech at the Israel Museum on Tuesday that Abbas and the Palestinians “are ready to reach for peace.”Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, who along with international negotiations envoy Jason Greenblatt has been tasked by Trump with relaunching the peace process, reportedly told Herzog on Tuesday: “We are planning to move fast in starting a diplomatic process in order to reach a deal.”Senior ministers were quoted in the Channel 2 report saying that it was clear that Trump will be pressing Israel for compromise, and that celebrations on the right because Trump did not refer to Palestinian statehood during his visit, and did not criticize the settlement enterprise, were misplaced. “We’re all dancing on the Titanic,” an unnamed top minister was quoted as saying. The Channel 2 report quoted Israeli ministers who met with Trump and his team saying that the US president and his key advisers drew three conclusions about peacemaking from their trip: That progress on the Israel-Palestinian front is central to progress elsewhere in the Middle East; that Abbas, with whom he has now met twice, is a viable partner; and that the notion that Netanyahu can’t make compromises because of the constraints of his right-wing coalition is false, since the center-left would support him.

On the following day,' Josephus wrote, 'the Romans, having routed the brigands from the town, set all on fire as far as Siloam'-Ancient war for Jerusalem echoes as stones and arrowheads uncovered-New findings on ancient street confirm 1st century historian‘s account of Roman routing of Jewish rebels in 70 CE-By Sue Surkes May 25, 2017, 9:38 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The remains of weapons used by Roman legionnaires and desperate Jewish rebels in Jerusalem in the first century CE went on display Thursday, with Israeli archaeologists linking the last battle before Jerusalem fell 2,000 years ago with ongoing celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification after the 1967 Six Day War.According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, an account by first century Roman-Jewish historian Josephus on the fall of Jerusalem is being confirmed by objects discovered on an ancient road that used to ascend from the city’s gates and the Pool of Siloam to the Jewish Temple, including the arms.“On the following day, the Romans, having routed the brigands from the town, set all on fire as far as Siloam,” Josephus wrote in “The Wars of the Jews.”Among other finds, archaeologists dug up stone ballista balls flung by roman catapults and arrowheads used by Jewish rebels behind barricades as the city fell to the Romans in 70 CE.“Josephus’s descriptions of the battle in the lower city has come face-to-face for the first time with evidence that was revealed in the field in a clear and chilling manner,” dig organizers Nahshon Szanton and Moran Hagbi said in a statement. The road is currently undergoing excavation with funds from Elad — a right-wing non-profit organization, whose central project is the renovated City of David archaeological park, just outside Jerusalem’s Old City walls. The archaeologists have unearthed a 100 meter (328 foot) section of the road, which is paved with large stone slabs.Research indicates that the road was built after the reign of King Herod and possibly even during the rule of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who sentenced Jesus to death.Yuval Baruch, the IAA’s Jerusalem district archaeologist, said the aim was to excavate the entire street within five years. The dig began four years ago, resuming excavations undertaken decades ago by American and European scholars.

Cabinet to discuss $50 million improvement plan for East Jerusalem-Priorities to include investments in education, improved sewage infrastructure and more efficient trash removal-By Sue Surkes May 25, 2017, 11:57 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The finance and Jerusalem affairs ministries are to present a joint plan to the cabinet Sunday to improve conditions for Palestinians living in East Jerusalem, Channel 10 News reported Thursday. The first two clauses — costing NIS 180 million ($50 million) — will deal with the need for better education and for improved sewage infrastructure as well as for more efficient removal of trash. On Wednesday, President Reuven Rivlin used the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification to call for immediate action to improve the quality of life in the predominantly Arab neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, which are among the nation’s poorest.“We must take urgent care of East Jerusalem,” the president said. “We cannot sing songs of praise for a united Jerusalem while East Jerusalem, the area where 40 percent of its residents live, is the poorest urban area in Israel.”In a separate development, Channel 10 reported Wednesday that Israel’s National Security Council is considering a plan to transfer control of two East Jerusalem neighborhoods from the Jerusalem Municipality to a yet-to-be established local council.Despite being part of the city, Kafr Aqab and the Shuafat refugee camp are located on the other side of the security barrier and suffer from a dearth of municipal services.Under the plan, the two northern neighborhoods — which together compromise around one eighth of Jerusalem’s population — would be moved to a newly established local council that would remain under Israeli control and receive funding for municipal services directly from the state rather than through the municipality, according to Channel 10.While the report of the plan was welcomed by a number of left-leaning lawmakers, with opposition leader Isaac Herzog saying it would help “ensure a united Jerusalem with a Jewish majority,” the Jerusalem Municipality threw cold water on the idea, telling Channel 10 the establishment of a new local council would not “provide an answer” to the neighborhoods’ problems.

Norway demands PA return funds for women’s center named after terrorist-Oslo also calls for removal of country’s logo from facility honoring Dalal Mughrabi, says it won’t back future projects under current conditions-By Times of Israel staff May 27, 2017, 8:44 pm

Norway’s foreign minister on Friday condemned the Palestinian Authority for naming a women’s center in the West Bank, funded in part by the Scandinavian country, after a female terrorist.“The glorification of terrorist attacks is completely unacceptable, and I deplore this decision in the strongest possible terms. Norway will not allow itself to be associated with institutions that take the names of terrorists in this way. We will not accept the use of Norwegian aid funding for such purposes,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende said in a statement.Brende’s comments were made in reference to a new women’s center opened earlier this month in the West Bank town of Burqa. The center was named after Dalal Mughrabi, who took part in the 1978 Coastal Road Massacre. Mughrabi and several other Fatah terrorists landed on a beach near Tel Aviv, hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Road and killed 38 civilians, 13 of them children, and wounded over 70.Brende said that Norway had been unaware of the decision to name the center after Mughrabi. He demanded that the country’s name be removed from the center and that the funds it gave for construction be returned.“We have asked for the logo of the Norwegian representation office to be removed from the building immediately, and for the funding that has been allocated to the center to be repaid,” he said.He also said that Norway would no longer participate in similar projects until the country receives assurances “that nothing of this nature happens again.”“We will not enter into any new agreements with either the Palestinian Election Commission or UN Women in Palestinian areas until satisfactory procedures are in place to ensure that nothing of this nature happens again,” he said.Israel commended Oslo’s action, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon saying “Norway took the right step — a tough line against memorializing terrorists is an integral part of the international effort to eliminate terror. We recommend that the international community take thorough steps to check where the money it invests in the PA is going.”Norway’s rebuke of the PA came after the Norwegian branch of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem brought the matter to the country’s attention on Friday, the organization said in a statement, while thanking Brende for his “swift and clear” response.“The Palestinian Authority undermines the quest for peace in this region, and violates all standards of human decency, when it decides to glorify and perpetuate the despicable legacies of terrorists like Dalal Mughrabi,” ICEJ President Jürgen Bühler said. “The Norwegian government acted properly when it condemned this immoral action by the Palestinian Authority.”Palestinian Media Watch, which first brought attention to the naming of the women’s center, quoted a local village leader saying that “the center will focus especially on the history of the struggle of Martyr Dalal Mughrabi and on presenting it to the youth groups, and…constitutes the beginning of the launch of enrichment activities regarding the history of the Palestinian struggle.”The PA, UN, and Norway behind Palestinian youth center for women named after murderer Dalal Mughrabi https://t.co/B8uombUqMW pic.twitter.com/iL1DHR6FF3— Pal Media Watch (@palwatch) May 26, 2017-In addition to the women’s center, the PA has named a number of events and facilities in honor of Mughrabi and the other terrorists who died during the massacre in a firefight with Israeli security forces, with Fatah repeatedly hailing them as “martyrs.”In March, Palestinian Media Watch reported that the PA named a youth camp in Jericho after Mughrabi.Last year on the anniversary of the attack, a Ramallah-area Al-Awael school for girls held the “Dalal Mughrabi Cup” in honor of the killer. The girls’ basketball tournament was also co-organized by the Al-Razi Cultural and Social Association, a Palestinian NGO that works with the Anna Lindh Foundation to promote “intercultural dialogue” and “build trust and improve mutual understanding.”Mughrabi was also honored by Fatah in March two years ago when the party, addressing Israelis on its Facebook page, told them to collect the body parts of murdered Israelis and leave Israel.“On this day, March 11, in 1978, Dalal Mughrabi and her companions declared the birth of the Palestinian Republic in the heart of the occupied territories. The enemy admitted the death of 30 Zionists in the operation, yet according to the reports the number exceeded 80 casualties… Retaliation after retaliation and the windstorms will not subside,” the Facebook post read.

In boost to IS, Libya jihadists Ansar al-Sharia announce dissolution-With Manchester, Egypt attacks linked to North African country, collapse of group responsible for Benghazi US embassy onslaught points to growing strength of Islamic State-By AFP and AP May 28, 2017, 4:07 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Libyan jihadist group Ansar al-Sharia, which is linked to Al-Qaeda and deemed a terrorist organisation by the UN and United States, announced its “dissolution” in a communique published online on Saturday.Washington accuses the group of being behind the September 11, 2012 attack on the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi in which ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed.Ansar al-Sharia is one of the jihadist groups that sprung up in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, in the chaos following the death of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011. They overran the city in 2014.East Libyan military strongman Khalifa Haftar earlier this month launched an offensive to oust jihadist fighters from their two remaining strongholds in Benghazi. In its communique Ansar al-Sharia said it had been “weakened” by the fighting. The group lost its leader, Mohammed Azahawi, in clashes with Haftar’s forces in Benghazi at the end of 2014.Most of its members then defected to the so-called Islamic State group. Ansar al-Sharia later joined the Revolutionary Shura Council of Benghazi, a local alliance of Islamist militias. At its zenith, Ansar al-Sharia was present in Benghazi and Derna in eastern Syria, with offshoots in Sirte and Sabratha, western Libya. The organisation took over barracks and other sites abandoned by the ousted Kadhafi forces and transformed them into training grounds for hundreds of jihadists seeking to head to Iraq or Syria. But despite the group’s collapse, the Libya connection in the May 22 Manchester concert suicide bombing and Friday’s attack on Christians in Egypt has shone a light on the ongoing threat posed by militant Islamic groups that have taken advantage of lawlessness in the troubled North African nation. In addition to wide swathes of territory once controlled by Ansar al-Sharia, at its own peak, the Islamic State group controlled a 160-kilometer (100-mile) stretch of Libyan coastline and boasted between 2,000 and 5,000 fighters, many of them from Egypt and Tunisia. It is that Libya that the Manchester bomber, 22-year-old British citizen Salman Abedi, found when he and his family moved back from Britain after Gaddafi’s ouster in 2011.Monday’s bombing left 22 dead, including an 8-year-old girl, and was claimed by IS. Abedi’s brother Hashim has been taken into custody in Tripoli and, according to Libyan authorities, has confessed that he and Salman were IS members. In Egypt, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi sent his fighter-jets to bomb militant positions in eastern Libya just hours after IS fighters shot dead 29 Christians on their way to a remote desert monastery. The military said the attackers were trained in Libya.Egypt also has long complained that weapons smuggled across the porous desert border with Libya have reached militants operating on its soil. It also has claimed that militants who bombed three Christian churches since December received military training in IS bases in Libya.

Tel Aviv City Hall lit with Egypt flag in solidarity with Copts terror victims-In first such gesture towards Arab country, municipality building shows Eagle of Saladin after 29 Christian Copts killed by IS gunman-By Times of Israel staff May 28, 2017, 1:36 am

The Tel Aviv municipality building was lit in the colors of the Egyptian flag Saturday night, in a sign of solidarity with Israel’s neighbor, a day after a shooting attack left 29 people dead near Cairo. The building has been illuminated in various flags following other international terror attacks — on Tuesday it was lit in the colors of the Union Jack after a deadly suicide bombing in Manchester — but the latest tribute is the first time the gesture has been made towards an Arab country.Twenty-nine people were killed Friday morning when a bus carrying Christian Copts pilgrims was shot at by masked gunmen in the Egyptian Minya province, south of Cairo. According to the Egyptian Cabinet, 13 of the victims remained hospitalized in Cairo on Saturday evening. The Islamic State jihadist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came on the eve of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The attack drew immediate condemnation from Israel.Israel “strongly condemns the painful terror attack in Egypt and sends the condolences of the Israeli people to [Egyptian] President [Abdel-Fattah] Sissi and to the Egyptian people,” a Friday statement from the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.“There is no difference between terrorism harming Egypt and terrorism harming other countries. Terror will be beaten more quickly if all countries work against it together,” the statement said.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also issued a statement condemning the attack, as did the Islamist terror group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip.Writing on Twitter Saturday night, Tel Aviv Mayor Run Huldai said the decision to light the municipality building was meant to send a message that “those seeking peace will not rest until such horrific acts will end.”Tonight we light up the @TelAviv Municipality with the flag of #Egypt. Those seeking peace will not rest until such horrific acts will end. pic.twitter.com/ym2yiRZClz— Mayor of Tel Aviv (@MayorOfTelAviv) May 27, 2017-Egypt’s Copts, the Middle East’s largest Christian community, have repeatedly complained of suffering discrimination, as well as outright attacks, at hands of the country’s majority Muslim population.Over the past decades, they have been the immediate targets of Islamic extremists. They rallied behind the country’s general-turned-president, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, in 2013 when he ousted Islamist predecessor Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood group. Attacks on Christian homes, businesses and churches subsequently surged, especially in the country’s south, traditionally Egypt’s Christian heartland.

Children saved from Nazi camps unveil monument to parents-Group saved by Sir Nicholas Winton opens ”Farewell Memorial’ replica of 1939 train door, with hands of infants on one side and those of parents on the other-By AP May 28, 2017, 3:08 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

PRAGUE (AP) — A group of the children saved by Sir Nicholas Winton from Nazi death camps has, some 70 years later, unveiled a monument in Prague’s main train station to honor their parents. The Briton arranged eight trains to carry 669 children, most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia through Germany to Britain at the outbreak of World War II in 1939. He died in 2015 at age 106.The children were sent to foster parents. Back home, most of their parents died in the Holocaust. The Farewell Memorial is a replica of a 1939 train door with the hands of children on one side and those of parents on the other.Milena Grenfell-Baines, one of those saved, said Saturday the monument was a belated expression of thanks.Winton was a 29-year-old London stockbroker in December 1938 when a friend asked him to go to Prague to help in the refugee camps. He decided to do more after seeing that the children of those considered enemies of the Nazis, who had annexed part of western Czechoslovakia, were not being cared for. When Winton returned home, he set to work by taking letterhead from the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, then typing underneath the words “Children’s Section.”He eventually wrung a promise from the British government to let the children enter the country, provided he had a foster home arranged for each one and upon payment of a guarantee of 50 pounds per child.Winton drew up lists of some 6,000 at-risk children and encouraged British families to take them in. He arranged trains from Prague to the Netherlands, then ferries to take the children across the North Sea.The children from Prague helped by Winton were among some 10,000 mostly Jewish children who made their way to Britain on what were known as Kindertransports (children’s transports) just before and during the first years of the war. Many never saw their parents again.

Israeli minister meets publicly with Arab officials in Ecuador-Crediting Trump’s initiative, Ayoub Kara says Gulf states ‘expressed their approval to move forward with negotiations’-By Times of Israel staff and AFP May 25, 2017, 4:47 pm

For the first time in recent years, delegates from Gulf states met openly and publicly with an Israeli government minister as they gathered in Ecuador on Wednesday for the swearing-in of Lenin Moreno as the country’s new leader, in apparent first fruits of US President Donald Trump’s Mideast diplomacy.Likud Minister Ayoub Kara attended the ceremony in the capital Quito along with leaders of South American nations and representatives from around the world.Kara tweeted that he was “surprised by the warm attitude of representatives from the Gulf states,” crediting Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia and Israel as a game changer.Trump has been trying to push for an alliance of the Sunni states, together with the US and Israel to counter Iran. He is pushing Israel and the Palestinians to reach a peace deal, which he says would also facilitate a wider peace between Israel and the Gulf nations.Kara, a minister without portfolio posted photos of himself with representatives from the Palestinian Authority along with delegates from Oman, Qatar and Yemen and other Arab nations as well as the prime minister of the Sahrawi Republic of southern Morocco, Abdelkader Taleb Omar.“President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu are coordinating every step of this political initiative, and there is progress on the issue,” Kara said.Kara joined by Israel’s Ambassador to Ecuador Edwin Yabo, discussed developments in the Middle East initiated by Trump with the Gulf delegates. In a statement, Kara, who is Druze, said the meetings were “open and cordial,” and that all sides “expressed their approval to move forward with the political negotiations.”“For the first time, after years of action in the political arena, [representatives of] countries from the Saudi coalition agreed to meet openly with me as a representative of the State of Israel,” he tweeted in Hebrew.Kara said that the public recognition by those countries of an Israeli minister showed their desire to move toward peace with Israel. The minister also spoke with the presidents of Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala and Paraguay, whom he knew from their visits to Israel. He urged them to forge closer relations with Israel join the fight against terrorism.“Just as Africa has taken giant steps closer to Jerusalem, we will do everything for Ecuador and all of Central and South America to come closer to Israel too,” he said.Ecuador’s new president took office Wednesday, tasked with steering the oil-rich nation, a flagship of the Latin American left, through troubled economic and political waters.Congress swore in Moreno, 64, as the quieter successor to his ally, leftist Rafael Correa, one of the feistiest personalities in Latin American politics.Moreno is the first wheelchair user to become Ecuador’s leader, and one of few in the world ever to serve as president.

For now, Trump’s peacemaking approach is all unfounded optimism-Op-ed: Pundits have spent the week trying to discern the strategy behind the nuances of the president’s thoroughly well-intentioned visit. But thus far, there is no strategy-By David Horovitz May 25, 2017, 3:58 pm

For decades, we’ve watched American administrations wrestle with the nuances of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, gradually formulating and recalibrating their positions — seeking to make progress for Israel’s sake, for the Palestinians’ sake, seeking to defang a pretext for terrorism, seeking the near-impossible deal. And when US President Donald J. Trump came to the Middle East this week — to Riyadh, Jerusalem and Bethlehem — the Arab and Israeli leaders he met, and the pundits who watched him, subjected his every utterance to the spectacularly nuanced scrutiny they applied to all those other administrations over the years. Where is the administration headed? What to make of what he said, of what he didn’t say? But Trump is no sophisticate where matters of Middle East political maneuvering are concerned. And neither has he surrounded himself with Middle East sophisticates. The former administration experts on our region, and the best brains the US think tanks can produce — thus far, at least, almost none of them has been drawn into the Trump administration brain trust. For now, therefore, it’s worth internalizing that where President Trump and the Middle East peace process are concerned, there is no strategy for the pundits to try to figure out. It’s not even a case of “What you see is what you get” — because there’s no telling what we may get. It is, rather: What you see is what there is. Not carefully, warily calculated formulations, hinting at the subtle agenda beneath. But Trump front and center. Trump from the heart. Trump from the gut.And what you see is a president who believes in his deal-making skills, and wants to think he can apply them to regional politics. What you see is a president who is wary of Muslims, but is now, rhetorically at least, distinguishing between the religion and its adherents, on the one hand, and the political manipulation of the religion by evil people, on the other — hence his talk in Riyadh on Sunday of “Islamist extremism” and “Islamist terror.” Not Islamic extremism; not Islamic terror. What you see is a president instinctively supportive of Israel — of a strong nation, with a glorious history, that knows how to look after itself. You saw it in his history-making “private visit” to the Israeli-liberated, holiest place for Jewish prayer — kippah on head, respectful, empathetic. It is an unsophisticated love — a birthright Israel-style love — that the Palestinians are doing their best to cloud. (After unsophisticated love for Israel, there often follows dismay at the realization that not everything is quite as clear-cut as one had thought. The more you know, the more complicated it can get; the challenge for Israel and its supporters will become more acute if Trump engages more deeply, to see him maintain his Zionist sensibilities amid the complex narrative of our reality here.) What you see is a president who, to hear his remarks about Jerusalem, would for sure have changed the plaque on the West Jerusalem consulate to say “Embassy,” and may yet do so, but who in pledging to make that change while on the campaign trail knew little about the potential implications and ramifications. What you see is a president who is well-disposed toward Jews. They’re part of his family. Several hold key administration positions. They’re his lawyers. They’re his former lawyers now filling key posts like special envoy and ambassador to Israel. What you see is a president who thinks America under Obama exuded weakness in the Middle East and was an unreliable ally of Israel, and intends to change all that. What you see is a president deeply hostile to the regime in Iran, who has given senior positions to ex-military figures who share and outdo him in that hostility, and who heard from King Salman and others in Riyadh how widely feared Iran is, and how central to this region’s problems and to threats beyond this region. What you see is a president who, on this trip, was keenly aware of Evangelical support for Israel, and who wanted to ensure that his visit would play well back home for the Republican party. What you see is a president who has now spent considerable time with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who has doubtless been presented for the first time with passionate advocacy for the Palestinian cause, and who chose only to implicitly confront Abbas in public with the imperative to stop inciting terrorism and funding terrorists and their families, but who knows that the Republican Party is itching to financially punish the Palestinian Authority if the issue is not resolved. What you see is a president who may get sicker of the whole Israeli-Palestinian quagmire the deeper he gets drawn into it. Who may banish Abbas from his White House like George W. Bush banished Yasser Arafat. Or not. Who may become impatient when Benjamin Netanyahu tells him that, no, sorry Donald, there are concessions we simply cannot and will not make. Or not. What you see is a president who really, truly, doesn’t care if there’s a one-state or a two-state solution because, at least until this trip, he had little sense of the significance of either, and may not have even now. What you see is a president who wants to proclaim that he brokered the impossible deal. But who, embattled at home, will be constrained and preoccupied. And who plainly has no instant solution, because nobody does. (We need the long-haul approach, as I stressed in this piece on the eve of his visit.)What you see is a president, thus far, who is doggedly attached to the charmingly optimistic, thoroughly well-intentioned and dangerously false notion he set out when hosting Abbas at the White House early this month, that solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict “is something that I think is, frankly, maybe not as difficult as people have thought over the years.”In his Israel Museum speech, the last event of his whirlwind Middle East trip, he insisted, in a departure from his prepared text, that Abbas and the Palestinians are “ready to reach for peace.” Speaking slowly, as though addressing small children, he continued, “I know you’ve heard it before. I am telling you. That’s what I do. They are ready to reach for peace.” And, he went on, still extemporizing, after his meeting with “my very good friend, Benjamin, I can tell you also, that he is reaching for peace. He wants peace.”To which one can only say two things:One: Would that it were all so simple. Two: Nobody, but nobody, knows quite what will happen when — or if — President Trump allows himself to recognize that it is not.

Israel to reduce electricity to Gaza, after PA refuses to pay-COGAT chief says Hamas more interested in financing terror than paying for fuel; Strip already facing ‘humanitarian crisis’ due to lack of fuel-By Dov Lieber May 25, 2017, 7:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel said on Sunday that it would reduce the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip, after the Palestinian Authority said it would not continue to pay the bill. The decision, which could have a major humanitarian impact on the Strip’s two million residents, who are already facing an energy crisis, was announced by Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Major General Yoav (Poly) Mordechai during an interview on BBC Arabic.“Israel is forced to reduce the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip,” he said, blaming the move on an internal power struggle between the Palestinians.“This is an internal Palestinian issue, not an Israeli-Palestinian issue,” Mordechai said. “Unfortunately there are internal problems between Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, and this brought about a decision by the PA not to finance the electricity,” he added. The PA first informed Israel back in April it would no longer pay for Gaza’s electricity. The move is part of a series of steps aimed a forcing Hamas to either cede control of the Gaza Strip back to the PA, or take full responsibility for the enclave.Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007 after a violent conflict with PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party.A spokesperson for COGAT told The Times of Israel “no official time” has been chosen to put the measure into effect.According to Mordechai, Israel is presently the only supplier of electricity to the Gaza Strip.Gaza’s residents have already been experiencing deep power cuts for the last two months, having just four to six hours of electricity a day.The embattled enclave’s only power plant stopped running in April, after Hamas ran out of fuel and refused to purchase more from the Palestinian Authority over what it said were high taxes.Egypt also provided a small amount of power to Gaza, but those power lines have been malfunctioning.According to Mordechai, Israel currently supplies Gaza with 125 megawatts monthly — around 30% of what is needed to power Gaza for 24 hours a day. Israel had also decided to provide another 100 megawatts a month. After the new decision is implemented, Israel will supply Gaza with only 75 megawatts a month. The PA has been paying 40 million shekels ($11.1 million) a month for the 125 megawatts. Mordechai said he received an “official notice” from Ramallah saying it is “interested in transferring” just 20-25 million shekels ($5.6- 7 million) a month for electricity to Gaza.In May, Hussein al-Sheikh, head of the PA’s Civil Affairs Department, said Hamas profits from collecting electricity payments from Gaza residents.“We are not going to continue financing the Hamas coup in Gaza,” he told the Voice of Palestine radio station.Mordechai echoed these accusations.“Unfortunately, Hamas takes NIS 100 million ($28 million) a month from residents of the Gaza Strip: from the goods, from the taxes of all the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and this does not reach the Palestinian Authority,” he said.“The reason for this is that Hamas prefers that the money go to the tunnels, to the digging and to the organization,” he added. The Israeli general said Hamas leaders enjoy electricity 24 hours a day, and that each member of the group is provided with a generator and fuel. “Hamas prefers its interests over the interests of the people of Gaza,” he said.Without a sufficient supply of power, Gaza’s current “humanitarian crisis” will deepen, the World Bank warned in an April report.Gaza’s health ministry has warned of cutbacks on hospital care due to a lack of power.Gazans are also dependent on water desalinization plants to provide them with drinking water. Without power, the operation of these plants will be further compromised.Water expert Dr. Yousef Abu-Mayla from the University of Al-Azhar of Gaza said earlier this month at the Sharing Knowledge Foundation Conference in Jordan that just 10% of Gazans currently have access to safe drinking water, as even desalinated Gaza water is susceptible to biological contamination. The price of drinkable water in Gaza is so prohibitive, he added, “vulnerable households end up spending one-third of their income on water.”Hamas, which openly calls for the Jewish state’s destruction, has fought three wars with Israel since 2007, and continues to manufacture rockets and dig tunnels into Israel in preparation for another round of conflict.

Iran builds third underground missile plant – report-Revolutionary Guard officer also tells semi-official Fars news that Saudi Arabia will use American weapons against Israel-By Judah Ari Gross May 25, 2017, 2:26 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has established a third underground ballistic missile production facility in southwestern Iran, the semi-official Fars News agency reported Thursday.Amirali Hajizadeh, head of the IRGC’s airspace program, told the Iranian outlet that the country would continue its ballistic missile program despite international criticism. The facility was under construction for years, Hajizadeh told Fars.Alongside the Iran nuclear deal in 2015, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution that “called upon [Iran] not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”However, Tehran has interpreted that call to be a suggestion, and has carried out multiple ballistic missile tests since the passage of the nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has been adamant about the need to curb Iran’s weapons development programs, with the White House “officially putting Iran on notice” earlier this year.Hajizadeh responded to Trump’s tough words on Iran.“We are increasing our missile capabilities,” he said. “It is natural that our enemies America and [Israel] are concerned and angry about the missile production and missile tests and showing our ‘missile cities’ because they want the Iranian nation always to be in a weak position.”Many of Iran’s ballistic missiles are stored in so-called “missile cities,” underground storage facilities where they are kept to protect them from airstrikes.Trump has also encouraged the formation of an anti-Iran coalition consisting of Sunni Muslim nations, like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan. On Saturday, Trump signed a weapons deal with Saudi Arabia worth approximately $110 billion, including the advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, which is designed to intercept incoming ballistic missiles. In his interview, Hajizadeh said he was not concerned by the recent arms deal to its Saudi enemies, as he was “confident” that the weapons would be used not against the Islamic Republic, but against Israel. The Jewish state has expressed some moderate concern over the supposedly largest-ever arms deal to Saudi Arabia. However, the issues raised by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman have less to do with the systems being sold to Riyadh in particular, but rather to a general “arms race” in the Middle East and the potential threat to Israel’s military edge in the region.Avi Davidi contributed to this report.

Hezbollah supporters set Lebanese minefield alight near northern Israeli border town-Explosions heard in north; no injuries reported; IDF soldiers said to disperse crowd marking 17 years since Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon-By Times of Israel staff May 25, 2017, 5:49 pm

Supporters of Lebanese terror group Hezbollah marking the anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon 17 years ago set fire to a field along the Israel-Lebanon border near the northern Israeli town of Metulla on Thursday, setting off several mines.Explosions were heard in the area as Israel Defense Forces responded to the incident, Israel Radio reported.Soldiers were said to have dispersed the crowd on the other side of the border, apparently by firing shots into the air. There were no immediate reports of injuries.A video from the scene posted by an Israel Radio reporter showed smoke rising from the field, as a number of IDF soldiers gathered near the fence.Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon began on May 23, 2000, ending 18 years of presence in the country since the start of the First Lebanon War in 1982. The pullout was completed over two days.Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, gained strength and power after the withdrawal, engaging in a 38-day war with Israel over the summer of 2006 after a cross-border raid that killed eight IDF soldiers and saw the capture of two reservists, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, who were critically injured and later died. Their bodies were returned to Israel in 2008 in a prisoner deal with Hezbollah.Over that summer in 2006, 160 Israelis were killed, a majority of the them soldiers, and over 1,000 Lebanese lost their lives, including hundreds of civilians.Tensions between Hezbollah and Israel have remained high since then with both sides warning that the next round of violence would be costly to the other party.Hezbollah has been bogged down in nearby Syria, fighting alongside the Iranians and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.Israel has been closely monitoring the group’s defenses and capabilities and a number of airstrikes on weapons convoys over the six-year Syrian civil war have been attributed to Israel, which has vowed to prevent Hezbollah from attaining advanced weaponry from Iran via Syria.Israel has made efforts to bolster the Israel-Lebanon border area, a project which has been under way for some time. In 2012, a seven-meter (23-foot) high wall separating Israel from Lebanon near Metulla was completed. The 1,200-meter-long (3,937-foot) wall is outfitted with sophisticated cameras and sensory equipment aimed at preventing infiltration. Last year, Israel put up a concrete wall near Kibbutz Misgav Am in the north.

Hamas executes 3 members accused of killing terror leader-Two men hanged, one shot, for allegedly taking part in killing of Mazen Faqha; Gaza news agency broadcasts it live on Facebook-By Agencies and Times of Israel staff May 25, 2017, 6:48 pm

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Hamas announced Thursday that it put to death three men accused of assassinating a senior member of the terror group in March.Mazen Faqha, a Hamas terror chief, was shot on March 24 outside his Gaza home. Hamas accuses the three suspects of collaborating with Israel and sentenced them to execution on Sunday.Israel has not confirmed or denied the accusations.Hamas’s Interior Ministry said two of the accused were hanged and one was killed by firing squad Thursday. The chief suspect, identified as Ashraf Abu Leila, 38, was sentenced to hang after being convicted of the murder in a Sunday court ruling. Hisham al-Aloul, 44, was also sentenced to hang, and Abdallah al-Nashar, faced the firing squad.A shaky video shot from a distance purporting to show the execution was circulating online and broadcast live on Facebook. The footage showed some sort of public square lined with black-clad men.Human Rights Watch condemned the executions in a statement.“Rushing to put men to death based on an unreviewable decision of a special military court days after announcing their arrests and airing videoed confessions smacks of militia rule, not the rule of law,” Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW’s Middle East director, said.“Reliance on confessions, in a system where coercion, torture and deprivation of detainee’s rights are prevalent, and other apparent due process violations further taint the court’s verdicts. Death as government-sanctioned punishment is inherently cruel and always wrong, no matter the circumstance.”After Faqha’s killing, Hamas set up checkpoints throughout Gaza and barred all residents and foreign aid workers from leaving the coastal strip and going to Israel. It has since eased some of the restrictions. The death of Faqha, a shadowy senior figure in Hamas’s military wing, shocked Hamas, which has ruled Gaza with an iron fist for the past decade.Faqha, 38, was killed in the garage of his apartment building in March after dropping off his family. Hamas said the killer used a weapon with a silencer, allowing him to escape undetected.Faqha had been in charge of forming cells for Hamas’s military wing the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades in the West Bank — overseeing, from Gaza, efforts to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets from the West Bank.He had spent years in an Israeli jail for terrorist activities including orchestrating a 2002 suicide bombing in which 9 Israelis were killed, before being released to Gaza as part of the 2011 Shalit prisoner exchange deal.Hamas accused Israel of killing Faqha through collaborators and launched a manhunt.Earlier this month, the group announced it arrested 45 alleged collaborators with Israel, including three purportedly involved in killing Faqha.
