Bipartisan group of senators call for repealing UN resolution on Israel-Sens. Schumer, Cardin and Rubio co-sponsor measure demanding US ensure no action is taken at Paris peace summit; GOP rep. moves to eliminate two-state support-By Eric Cortellessa January 5, 2017, 1:43 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — A bipartisan coalition of US senators introduced a measure Wednesday that seeks to repeal the United Nations Security Council resolution passed last month that labels Israeli settlements illegal and calls for a complete halt to all construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The Obama administration had refused to veto the resolution, allowing it to pass in a move that infuriated Israel and divided American Jews.Co-sponsored by New York Sen. Chuck Schumer (D), Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin (D) and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R), the Senate resolution condemns the UN motion as “anti-Israel,” calling for it to be “repealed or fundamentally altered” to no longer be “one-sided.”The proposal also calls for the US to reject efforts made by outside parties to impose a solution on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and demands the US ensure no action is taken at the upcoming Paris peace conference, set for January 15.Expressing support for a two-state outcome, the text declared that any final-status resolution to the conflict needs to settled through direct negotiations between the parties. The United Nations was not an appropriate venue for making progress on the issue, said Senate Minority Leader Schumer, one of the most prominent Jewish members of Congress and a fierce Israel supporter.“Since the days of ‘Zionism is racism,’ the UN has been a fervently anti-Israel body and, unfortunately, that bias has never diminished,” he said in a statement. “Knowing this, past administrations — both Democrat and Republican — have protected Israel from the vagaries of this biased institution.”“Unfortunately, by abstaining on United Nations Resolutions 2334, this administration has not followed in that path.” he added. “This Senate resolution reaffirms that peace must come through direct negotiations in order to achieve a sustainable two-state solution.”Schumer’s Republican colleague Rubio echoed a similar sentiment.“Efforts to delegitimize Israel have been underway a long time at the United Nations and have now sadly been aided by the outgoing administration,” he said. “But the time has come to turn back the tide and renew America’s commitment to the Jewish state,”UNSC Resolution 2443 was passed by a vote of 14-0 following a US abstention on December 23, a decision that effectively allowed the motion through. The text calls for a complete end to all construction in areas Israel gained after the 1967 Six Day War, territory that includes the Old City, with the Temple Mount and Western Wall.It also calls on all states “to distinguish, in their relevant dealings, between the territory of the State of Israel and the territories occupied since 1967.”Israel fears such language will lead to an uptick in boycott and sanctions efforts, and Israeli officials have warned it will provide a tailwind for terror.Cardin, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, voiced criticism that the resolution impedes an already stalled peace process. The resolution, he said, is “a one-sided text that makes direct negotiations for a two-state solution more challenging.”“Going forward,” he added, “Congress will take action against efforts at the UN, or beyond, that use Resolution 2334 to target Israel. I hope that in 2017, we can look at policies and actions that facilitate resumption of direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, and I stand ready to support productive efforts.”Nineteen other senators have already signed on to support the resolution, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R), Arizona John McCain (R), Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D), Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey (D), Delaware Sen. Chris Coons (D), Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R), Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton (R), Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly (D) and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R).A House vote on a similar resolution is due for a vote on Thursday and is expected to pass.Iowa Rep. Steve King also offered a separate amendment to the resolution Wednesday that would remove all references to a two-state solution.King, originally a Ted Cruz backer in the presidential election until he put his name behind Trump, has long been an opponent of the two-state framework endorsed by multiple US presidents. He was a vocal supporter of the GOP removing that position from its party platform this summer. In July, he told The Times of Israel: “A two-state solution would only be a new place to build up more arms to fire more rockets into Israel proper. So I don’t think they should concede the land Israelis have fought over.”King’s amendment is unlikely to be embraced by the Democratic members backing the resolution who argue the two-state solution is the only solution to the conflict.

More Americans support UN resolution on Israel than oppose it — poll-While 35% of respondents back the anti-settlements Security Council resolution and 28% reject it, a plurality of 36% holds no opinion either way-By Eric Cortellessa January 4, 2017, 10:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — More Americans support last month’s United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements than those who oppose it, while a plurality of respondents hold no viewpoint on the matter, according to new polling.A national tracking poll conducted by Politico and Morning Consult recently found that 35% of US voters back UNSC Resolution 2334 — which declares all settlement construction to be in violation of international law — while 28% said they opposed the measure. The US abstaining on that vote was seen as a sharp policy shift by Washington, which has historically shielded Israel from similar resolutions dealing with settlements by wielding its veto.Asked their feelings on the UN motion, 14% of voters said they “strongly supported”; 21% said they “somewhat supported”; 11% said they “strongly opposed”; 17% said they “somewhat opposed”; and 36% said don’t have an opinion or didn’t know.On a separate question, voters were asked what they think of settlements in more abstract terms.Given three options of which statements came closest to their views, 28% of respondents said they thought settlement construction in the West Bank and Gaza enhanced Israel’s security and that, because a Palestinian state has not previously existed, such building on disputed territory did not deny Palestinians any rights. The question included Gaza, despite the fact that Israel evacuated its settlements and soldiers from the Palestinian enclave in 2005.Likewise, 28% said that such settlement communities do “violate international laws and the rights of Palestinians,” and pose an obstacle to establishing a peace deal between the sides.A plurality of 44% of respondents, however, said they held no opinion on the issue or didn’t know. The survey also asked about their level of engagement with the recent UN resolution — how much had they “seen, read or heard” about it.According to the polling: 19% said they encountered the measure “a lot”; 38% said “some”; 24% said “not much”; and 19% said “not at all.”The poll, conducted from December 28 to December 29, sampled 2,000 registered voters. It’s margin of error was +/- 2%.UNSC Resolution 2443 was passed by a vote of 14-0 following a US abstention on December 23, a decision that effectively allowed the motion through. The text calls for a complete end to all construction in areas Israel gained after the 1967 Six Day War, territory that includes the Old City, with the Temple Mount and Western Wall.It also calls on all states “to distinguish, in their relevant dealings, between the territory of the State of Israel and the territories occupied since 1967.”Israel fears such language will lead to an uptick in boycott and sanctions efforts, and Israeli officials have warned it will provide “a tailwind for terror.”The measure was met with furious condemnations from Jerusalem, with politicians issuing scathing criticisms of the countries that pushed for and supported the measure, as well as the Obama administration for withholding its veto power.

67% of Israelis want pardon for IDF soldier convicted of manslaughter-New survey shows most Israelis against conviction of Sgt. Elor Azaria, filmed killing a wounded Palestinian attacker-By Times of Israel staff January 5, 2017, 1:10 am

A sizable majority of Israelis support the pardoning of an IDF soldier convicted of manslaughter for shooting dead an incapacitated Palestinian assailant in the West Bank city of Hebron last year, a poll conducted on Wednesday found.According to the flash survey commissioned by Channel 2, some 67 percent of Israelis said they supported clemency for Sgt. Elor Azaria, while 19% said he shouldn’t be pardoned.A military tribunal in Tel Aviv convicted Azaria, 19, for shooting dead an incapacitated Palestinian, who minutes before had stabbed two other soldiers. The decision, which his attorneys slammed as biased, concluded a months-long trial that deeply divided the country. The results showed that 51% of respondents opposed Wednesday’s manslaughter verdict, while 36% said they backed it.Moreover, 52% of poll participants said they disagreed with comments by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot seeming to dismiss the idea that Azaria should be protected from prosecution as he is ‘everyone’s child.’“An 18-year-old man serving in the army is not ‘everyone’s child.’ He is a fighter, a soldier, who must dedicate his life to carry out the tasks we give him. We cannot be confused about this,” Eisenkot said Tuesday. Some 38% said they agreed with Eisenkot’s remarks. The poll was conducted on Wednesday by Machon Midgam and the iPanel survey platforms. The report did not reveal how the poll was conducted or how many people were contacted.Azaria’s trial saw politicians and current and former army generals alternately supporting or condemning the soldier’s actions. Many of the army’s top brass, as well as former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon, had railed against Azaria’s “unethical” decision to shoot the assailant, Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, in the head nearly 15 minutes after the latter was shot and wounded as he attempted to stab an IDF soldier in Hebron.Azaria was filmed shooting Sharif on March 24, 2016. The footage, which was published online shortly after the incident by the left-wing advocacy group B’Tselem, sparked an intense debate in Israel about military discipline and ethics in the midst of a wave of Palestinian terror attacks that began in September 2015.In the face of strong condemnation of Azaria’s actions by top military brass, including Eisenkot and Ya’alon, far-right supporters and some politicians have accused the defense establishment of abandoning one of its own.Following the verdict, politicians from across the political spectrum called for Azaria to be pardoned.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz and opposition lawmaker Shelly Yachimovich were among those appealing for clemency for the soldier.Raoul Wootliff contributed to this report.

Netanyahu backs pardon for soldier convicted of killing wounded stabber-‘This is a hard and painful day,’ PM says, joining other senior lawmakers calling for Elor Azaria to be let off after manslaughter conviction-By Raoul Wootliff January 4, 2017, 9:01 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday evening said he backs calls to pardon an IDF soldier convicted of manslaughter for shooting dead an incapacitated Palestinian assailant, and described the conclusion of the months-long trial as “a hard and painful day.”The Jaffa Military court earlier Wednesday convicted Sgt. Elor Azaria, 19, for shooting dead an incapacitated Palestinian who minutes before had stabbed two other soldiers. The trial deeply divided the country, with politicians and current and former army generals alternately supporting or condemning Azaria’s actions.Politicians from across the political spectrum responded to the verdict by calling for a presidential pardon to prevent Azaria serving jail time.Writing on Facebook Wednesday night, Netanyahu gave his backing to the calls for clemency, saying that he supported granting Azaria a pardon.“This is a hard and painful day for us all — first and foremost for Elor and his family, for IDF soldiers, for many citizens, and for the parents of our soldiers, myself included,” the prime minister wrote.“I urge all citizens to act responsibly toward the IDF, the officers, and the IDF chief… IDF soldiers are our sons and daughters, and they must remain above all conflict. I support pardoning Elor Azaria,” he wrote.Earlier, Culture Minister Miri Regev (Likud) called for a pardon for Azaria and Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the right-wing Jewish Home party, reiterated the call he had made the previous day, saying Azaria must be pardoned “immediately, right now.”Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas) and Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) also publicly called for Azaria to be pardoned. In a surprise development, coalition ministers were joined in their call by Zionist Union’s Shelly Yachimovich, former head of the Labour Party.Likud MK Yehudah Glick, meanwhile, called for clemency, but not a full pardon, for Azaria.Responding to the calls, President Reuven Rivlin’s office said that defendants, rather than politicians, must apply for clemency and that requests will only be dealt with after all legal proceedings have ended.“In accordance with standard practice regarding requests for pardons on this or any case, requests for pardons are dealt with when submitted by the applicant themselves, or by one with power of attorney, or an immediate relative, following a conclusive judicial ruling,” the statement read.“In light of the foregoing, and in relation to the case of the soldier Elor Azaria, in the event that a pardon should be requested, it will be considered by the president in accordance with standard practices and after recommendations from the relevant authorities.”The statement suggested Rivlin will not make any decision until after sentencing, giving him the option to commute the sentence rather than overturn it entirely.Azaria’s sentencing will take place in just over a week, on January 15, according to the IDF. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years, though analysts expect him to receive less than that. His defense team said immediately after the verdict that it will appeal. The footage, which was published online shortly after the incident by the left-wing advocacy group B’Tselem, sparked an intense debate in Israel about military discipline and ethics in the midst of a wave of Palestinian terror attacks that began in September 2015.Responding to the conviction, Ya’alon accused politicians of “cynically exploiting” the Azaria case to score political points, hurting the soldier and his family in the process.“Today, with the conviction, we can say that the IDF and the Azaria family were seriously harmed by politicians who have betrayed their office,” the former defense minister said. “The criminal process that the soldier Elor and his family have experienced has been too difficult to bear and should have looked differently, should have been managed differently. The reason for its dragging out in a way that made it difficult for everyone involved is the cynical exploitation of the case by interested politicians for their own personal gain.”“Rather than being leaders, they used Elor and his family as a political pawn for a few more seats. They lied to you. I am ashamed of those politicians,” Ya’alon added.

Palestinian UN worker sentenced to 7 months for aiding Hamas-Waheed Borsh convicted of diverting materials to build jetty, aiding Gaza terror group; likely to be released next week under plea deal-By AFP and Times of Israel staff January 4, 2017, 7:40 pm

A Palestinian UN worker accused by Israel of aiding the Hamas terrorist group was sentenced to seven months’ jail on Wednesday, his lawyer said, in a plea deal that will see him released soon.Waheed Borsh was convicted of “rendering services to an illegal organization without intention,” his lawyer Lea Tsemel told AFP. With time already served, he is expected to be released on January 12.The case centered on accusations that rubble in Gaza under the responsibility of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) was misused by the terrorist group Hamas that controls the enclave. The engineer from Jabaliya in northern Gaza, who worked for the UNDP, was arrested on July 16.According to the Shin Bet security service, Borsh was recruited by a Hamas member to “redirect his work for UNDP to serve Hamas’s military interests.”During his interrogation, Borsh told investigators that in 2014, he was directed by Hamas to “focus on his work in the UNDP in a way that would allow Hamas to extract the greatest possible benefit from him,” the Shin Bet said at the time. The UNDP has operated in the West Bank and Gaza since the late 1970s. In recent years, its Gaza branch has focused on rebuilding the homes and businesses destroyed in the conflicts between Israel and Hamas. In August, Borsh was charged with diverting 300 tons of rubble from a UNDP project in the Gaza Strip, run by Hamas, to build a jetty for the Islamist movement’s naval force. After reviewing the charge sheet, the UNDP challenged Israel’s allegations and said Borsh diverted the rubble under instructions from the Palestinian Authority.Tsemel stressed that her client had been convicted only of unintentionally aiding Hamas by “moving some rubble.”“The prosecution claimed that he should have checked better as this could have helped Hamas.”The UNDP said it had “zero tolerance for wrongdoing”, but that the case did not prove deliberate intent.“This outcome confirms that there was no wrongdoing by UNDP,” the body said in a statement.UN officials argued that Borsh, as a UN employee, may qualify for immunity from prosecution and requested that they be allowed to visit him in jail.Israel however, rejected the UN request, saying “whoever assists a terror organization cannot hide behind a claim of immunity.”In addition to Borsh, Israel has accused two other Palestinians of infiltrating international aid organizations on behalf of Hamas. In August, an Israeli court charged Muhammad Halabi with channeling millions of dollars in foreign aid to Hamas and its armed wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. Halabi, who worked for the Christian organization World Vision, was arrested in June and later indicted on a number of charges, including funding terror. The charge sheet said he was recruited by Hamas to infiltrate the aid organization more than a decade ago, rising to become the head of the organization’s Gaza operations.According to the Shin Bet, Halabi also recruited a Palestinian aid worker from the Britain-based Save the Children to join the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, in 2014.The governments of Britain, Germany and Australia suspended their donations to the charity over Halabi’s alleged links to Hamas.Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, said at the time the cases were evidence of a “troubling trend of the systematic exploitation by Hamas.”AFP visited the site of the alleged UNDP misuse last summer and found a new-looking jetty extending around 50 metres (yards) into the sea.Perhaps 10 feet (three yards) wide, it had wooden slats erected on one side to obscure the view.Armed Hamas fighters were in nearby fields.UNDP officials privately accepted that rubble from one of its projects may have been used in the construction of the jetty. But they stressed the disposal occurred in conjunction with the Ministry of Public Works, which is run by Hamas’s rivals Fatah.Fatah leads the internationally recognized Palestinian government, and a UNDP probe concluded that there were no signs of Hamas activity in the area at the time the rubble was placed there.

Campaign rhetoric, post-election hate crimes draw Jewish historians into fray-Since Election Day, scholars and curators of Jewish history have consistently issued one message: Watch out-By Ben Sales January 5, 2017, 3:15 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

NEW YORK — In the two months since the presidential election, American scholars and curators of Jewish history have sent a consistent message: Watch out.“Our history reminds us of the dangers of racism and bigotry,” The Center for Jewish History warned last week. In a November statement, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum said the “Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words.” That same month, an open letter from more than 200 American Jewish historians suggested that it “is not too soon to begin mobilizing in solidarity.”The statements are rare acts of speaking out, their authors and signers say. Academics and historical institutions generally try to stay above the political fray in their professional lives, focusing more on interpreting what once happened, not what’s happening now.But a presidential campaign featuring the ethnically charged rhetoric of Donald Trump and many of his followers, and an election aftermath that saw a rise in hate crimes and invective targeting Jews and other minorities, convinced the institutions to raise their voices.“This was really a watershed moment for me,” said Hasia Diner, director of New York University’s Goldstein-Goren Center for American Jewish History, who helped organize the historians’ open letter. “It made me realize that in fact, as historians, no one is saying x, y or z is going to happen, but we had and have a responsibility to just wave the flag a bit.”The letter, which was published in the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles one week after the election, was explicit in blaming Trump for fanning the flames of bigotry toward “Muslims, Latinos, women, and others.” It noted how the American Jewish community has flourished since World War II and called on American Jews, mindful of their own past persecution, to stand up against anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred.“Our reading of the past impels us to resist any attempts to place a vulnerable group in the crosshairs of nativist racism,” the letter read. “It is our duty to come to their aid and to resist the degradation of rights that Mr. Trump’s rhetoric has provoked.”Throughout the presidential campaign and since the election, Jewish groups have split on how best to condemn anti-Semitism and how explicitly, if at all, to link it to the president-elect’s rhetoric. Some, like the Anti-Defamation League, have not been shy about criticizing Trump on issues like his call for a national registry of Muslims and a campaign ad it said used tropes that historically were used against Jews.Others, like the Jewish Federations of North America, have reached out to Trump and offered their assistance and counsel without issuing critical statements.Unlike the historians’ letter, the statements from the historical institutions avoided naming Trump or taking a political stance. But they also invoked the long history of Jewish persecution in urging Jews to stand up against bigotry.“When the Jews faced annihilation in Europe, we remember that the campaign mounted against us began with hateful words,” read the Dec. 28 statement by Joel Levy, president of the Center for Jewish History. “We must unequivocally protest acts of violence or discrimination motivated by ethnicity, religion, or sexual identity.”A version of Levy’s statement was issued initially a year ago with slightly different language. That statement, condemning “the toxic virus of Islamophobia” and specifically noting that Jews were once excluded from entry to the United States, came shortly after Trump first proposed a ban on Muslim immigration to the country. The updated statement condemns hate crimes “targeting Jews, Muslims, African-Americans, Hispanics, and other minority groups.”But Levy told JTA that the center was nonpartisan.“There are hateful voices from many quarters,” he told JTA. “I do not think this a political statement commenting on particular policies of the president-elect. Both statements are about core American Jewish values, and restating them and calling attention to them.”The Holocaust museum often comments publicly on preventing genocide and opposing bigotry internationally, but its Nov. 22 statement was a rarity, commenting on a white nationalist rally that took place at a building just blocks from the museum. Noting the use of Nazi terms by speakers, the statement invoked Holocaust history and “call[ed] on all American citizens, our religious and civic leaders, and the leadership of all branches of the government to confront racist thinking and divisive hateful speech.”Tad Stahnke, director of the museum’s Initiative on Holocaust Denial and Antisemitism, said the rally’s proximity and content spurred the statement, but that it was not meant as a comment on broader trends.“This is something happening just a few blocks from our museum here in Washington, where you have this combination of anti-Semitic racist rhetoric and invocation of Nazi slogans,” Stahnke said, referring to chants of “Hail Trump!” by rally-goers. “That merited a clear statement of condemnation.”Not everyone believes historians should be commenting on current events, and Trump’s campaign repeatedly denied that his campaign was in any way bigoted or that he was responsible for the white nationalists who endorsed him.Responding to the historians’ letter in the Jewish Journal, Allan Nadler, professor of religious studies and director of the Jewish studies program at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, wrote, “So inappropriate. What ever happened to scholarly objectivity, and never foreshadowing history? These historians are violating both principles.”Levy and Diner both said they weren’t sure how they would react if currents of hate become stronger. And Diner said that no matter what impact the statements have, they allow historians to take their part in a current debate.“These can be symbolic acts, but symbols are terribly important,” she said. “And if the vast majority of scholars of the Jewish past have said ‘Wait a minute, just keep your eyes open because this could be a disaster,’ it behooves the public to pay attention.”

An Israeli teenager killed in the shooting attack at an Istanbul club during New Year festivities will be laid to rest at 11 a.m. Tuesday in her home town of Tira. The cortege of 19-year-old Lian Zaher Nasser will depart from her home in the Arab city and proceed to the local cemetery.A spokesperson for the Joint (Arab) List confirmed that faction leader MK Ayman Odeh will attend the funeral, and possibly other parliamentarians. The party called for as many people as possible to attend the funeral. The town has also declared a day of mourning in solidarity with all the victims of terror.Nasser was one of 39 people killed Sunday when a gunman went on a rampage at the exclusive Reina nightclub in Istanbul where she was celebrating the New Year along with three friends from Tira. Her body arrived back in Israel on Monday. Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said Sunday that his ministry arranged Nasser’s return to Israel.“Lian was killed in a serious terror attack and as a state we are obligated to help return her body to Israel,” Deri said.Search-and-rescue organization ZAKA coordinated the repatriation at various levels, including finances, logistics, transportation and communication with the relevant authorities in Israel and in Turkey.“ZAKA is an international humanitarian organization that honors the dead, regardless of religion, race or gender,” said ZAKA head Yehuda Meshi-Zahav.The Islamic State (IS) terror group took responsibility for the attack, claiming that Christian revelers were targeted in response to Turkish military operations against IS in northern Syria. However the most of the dead were foreign tourists from Muslim countries.Palestinian social media was filled with discussion about the terror attack, and while many comments were sympathetic, a large number were critical of Nasser and her friends for going against Muslim tradition by being in a nightclub and celebrating the secular New Year.Tira resident Dr. Ala’a Abdulahi, who was also in the nightclub at the time of the shooting, hit back at the criticism on social media. She told Channel 10 television that “it is better to ignore such people. They are sick.”Nur Samara, another resident of Tira, lodged a complaint with police over the social media attacks, calling them more painful than the nightclub shooting itself. “These were girls who just wanted to travel, to enjoy themselves, to eat and drink. That’s all,” he said. The Joint (Arab) List also condemned the social media attacks, referring to them as “creeping IS-ism.” The party called on the public to dismiss such comments “which endanger the entire Arab community, its identity, its existence and its fundamental struggles.”The claim came after a recent IS propaganda video urged attacks on Turkey, which is home to an air base used in the US-led effort against the group in Syria and Iraq. The nightclub assailant, armed with a long-barreled weapon, killed a policeman and a civilian early Sunday outside the club before entering and firing at some of the estimated 600 people inside. The establishment is frequented by famous locals, including singers, actors and athletes.Authorities obtained the fingerprints and a basic description of the gunman and are close to identifying him, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said Monday after a weekly cabinet meeting. He confirmed that eight people have been detained in connection with the attack.Associated Press contributed to this report.

1 killed, 1 injured in separate Haifa shootings-Police say incidents likely criminal, investigating possibility of link between attacks-By Times of Israel staff January 3, 2017, 12:08 pm

One man was killed and a second injured in two shootings in Haifa Tuesday morning, as police investigated whether the two incidents were linked.A police spokesperson said the shootings were likely not terror-related, but the incidents were still being investigated. There were no reports of arrests made in connection with the shootings, and the shooters had apparently fled. The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 10 a.m. when a 45-year-old-man was shot on the city’s Hagiborim Street, according to Hebrew media reports.First responders who arrived at the scene found the man in critical condition and attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead shortly after.A paramedic said the victim, who was not immediately named, suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body.A half hour earlier, a 40-year-old man was shot several times and wounded on Haatzma’ut Road, about two kilometers away. The victim was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

Vandals twist Arizona family’s garden menorah into swastika-Seth and Naomi Ellis horrified to discover hideous display outside their house; supporters later gather to help fix and relight the festive candelabrum-By Times of Israel staff December 31, 2016, 4:45 pm

A Jewish family from Arizona received a nasty shock over the weekend when a festive menorah they had erected outside their house was vandalized overnight and contorted into a swastika. In recent days Seth Ellis of Chandler built the menorah out of PVC pipe for his children, who had asked for a holiday display in the garden after seeing Christmas trees around town. However, on Friday, Seth and his wife Naomi woke up to discover the menorah had been destroyed and bent into the shape of the Nazi symbol.Naomi called the police, who arrived at the scene in the early morning to help the couple take the swastika down before the children woke up.“I broke down in tears waiting for the police to come and hoping that my kids would not be awake to see it,” Naomi wrote on Facebook.“We live in a great neighborhood with kind and welcoming neighbors. We never would have imagined that someone would spread so much hate here,” she said.“I’m still not sure how I will explain this to [my children],” she said. “I’m not sure I quite understand it myself… How can people be filled with so much hate and violence? To think that someone would make such an effort to hurt and vandalize a family, is downright sickening.”ABC News noted that police were investigating the incident, though currently not as a hate crime but as a trespassing incident.Ellis’s Facebook post quickly received almost 2,000 shares and brought an outpouring of support. On Friday evening members of the community gathered to rebuild and relight the menorah.“Many of the people we spoke to in the crowd say they felt like they needed to be here tonight,” said ABC News reporter Megan Thompson. One such supporter, Miriam Schildkert, said: “We can show people — no really, that’s not how you behave.“We can believe different things, we can look different, but we can still all get along, we can still be friends and… be a community.”

Western Jews prefer big cities-Why Tel Aviv is Israel’s new ‘aliyah capital’-New immigrants flocking to beach city say its startup scene and liberal, cosmopolitan lifestyle among biggest draws-By Andrew Tobin January 1, 2017, 12:12 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

JTA – Meet Daniel Rubin, in many ways the new face of aliyah.Originally from Los Angeles, Rubin, 27, moved to Israel a decade ago to study at a Jerusalem yeshiva. In the following years he served in the Israeli army and bounced back and forth between Israel and the US for college and work. But last month, he and his wife made aliyah. They settled in Tel Aviv so he could found a startup and they could enjoy the coastal city’s Mediterranean lifestyle. The couple were among about 3,000 new immigrants who made this city home in 2016, helping Tel Aviv earn the title as the “aliyah capital” of Israel for the third straight year.“Tel Aviv is young, Tel Aviv is fun, Tel Aviv is exciting,” Rubin told JTA. “And I’m from LA, so I love the beach.”Rubin’s story reflects recent trends in aliyah. As the wave of immigrants from the former Soviet Union has ebbed since the 1990s, aliyah has reached historic lows. Among those who have continued coming, a greater ratio have been from Western countries, and they have been more likely to choose to launch their Israel experience in big cities. Tel Aviv, the nation’s cultural capital, is now the favorite destination.“Israel rescued millions of people from disadvantaged societies in Muslim countries and Eastern Europe,” said Sergio DellaPergola, a preeminent scholar of Jewish demography and migration. “But today, Diaspora Jews are overwhelmingly free people, mostly employed and mostly urban. There are no more rural Jews, no more persecuted Jews in ghettos, and therefore the whole migration balance is totally different. Aliyah is voluntary and based on Israel’s capability to offer employment and a good life.”Israel was largely built by Jews escaping persecution. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Russian pogroms, European anti-Semitism and Nazi persecution helped povulate pre-state and early Israel. The country’s Jewish ranks then swelled with consecutive floods of Jews fleeing the Middle East from the 1950s, Ethiopia from the 1970s and the former Soviet Union countries from the 1990s.In recent years, anti-Semitism in France and war in Ukraine have contributed to another uptick in aliyah, with Russian immigration hitting a 10-year high in 2016. But the broader trend since the early 1990s is downward. Aliyah from the former Soviet Union has largely run its course — after bringing almost a million immigrants to Israel — and overall numbers have reached lows only seen before in the 1980s, data from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics shows.Meanwhile, immigration to Israel from Western countries — mostly Europe and the United States — has remained relatively steady. Therefore, new arrivals from the West now account for a much larger percentage of the total. And apparently, Western Jews prefer big cities. Since 1989, no Israeli city has attracted more than 4 percent of new immigrants, with Tel Aviv — which is Israel’s second most populous city, with about half as many residents as Jerusalem — getting just 3 percent. But in 2016, Tel Aviv was the destination for 12 percent of new immigrants. The next three most popular cities were Jerusalem (10 percent), Netanya (9 percent) and Haifa (8 percent), according to the Ministry of Immigration. In interviews with about a dozen people who had recently made aliyah to Tel Aviv or were considering doing so, the city’s startup scene and liberal, cosmopolitan lifestyle were cited as the biggest draws. After a year in Jerusalem, Rubin and his wife, Talia, 23, moved to Tel Aviv. They loved Jerusalem, Rubin said, and the modern Orthodox community in the capital. But only in Tel Aviv could he launch The Pub Hub, his startup that turns bars into co-working spaces during the day. He opened the first location last month on Rothschild Boulevard, the city’s most happening thoroughfare.“The vibe here — the energy and the opportunities — you just can’t find anywhere else,” he said.Israel weathered the global recession better than most countries, and Tel Aviv is its financial and business center. The Israeli economy has grown by an average of nearly 4 percent annually over the past 13 years, and unemployment has fallen almost to 5 percent.Much credit goes to Israel’s startups. According to Tel Aviv’s municipal government, the city is home to about 1,450 of the country’s 5,000 early-stage companies, which is more than one startup for every 300 residents — the highest ratio of any city in the world. Many of those startups look to reach the international market, providing plenty of jobs for native English speakers.Groups that seek to attract young people to Israel have recognized the opportunity. Birthright Israel, which brings young Jews to visit the country free of charge, started an entrepreneurship program this year in Tel Aviv called Excel Ventures. And Nefesh B’Nefesh, the aliyah services provider, said it is opening a new office in the city next month to cater to the growing number of American, Canadian and British immigrants. What those interviewed seemed to most appreciate was Tel Aviv’s lifestyle — the cafes, the nightlife and the beaches, plus the prevalence of English speakers. Tel Aviv boasts 1,748 cafes, bars and nightclubs — one for every 230 residents — along with some 1,500 restaurants, according to the municipality.Uri Gafni, an official for Birthright’s Excel, summed up the sentiment.“Tel Aviv embodies many of the things these young professionals are looking for when they come to Israel — they want the nightlife and the bars and the beach and this delicate balance between lifestyle and work in an environment that is liberal and open to a variety of people from all over the world,” he said.“I think it’s easier for secular Jews around the world to relate to Tel Aviv than to Jerusalem. It’s much sexier for Jews to hang out in Tel Aviv, where they can finish the day and go drink a beer on Rothschild.”Although Tel Aviv is said to attract a secular crowd, a growing number of Orthodox Jews like Rubin are coming to the city, according to Nefesh B’Nefesh officials. Seventeen percent of the immigrants they helped make aliyah in the past two years were Orthodox, the agency’s numbers show — similar to the community’s representation in all of Israel. The Tel Aviv municipality has made quality-of-life investments in recent years, such as introducing bike sharing, renovating the central Dizengoff Square to make it more pedestrian friendly and creating open-air markets. At the same time, it has branded Tel Aviv as a “world city,” perhaps most effectively with Pride Week, which attracted more than 200,000 revelers and a handful of American celebrities this year.A downside of all this choice, from an aliyah perspective, is that people can also choose to leave. According to DellaPergola, many immigrants to Tel Aviv return to their home countries at some point, or to move back and forth. Even those who build a life in Israel often get priced out of the city, where already high housing prices leaped 13 percent this summer from a year earlier. The internal migration rate from Tel Aviv to other parts of the country is among the highest of any city in Israel, said DellaPergola. The good news for Tel Aviv, he said, is those who leave have in recent decades been replaced by new generations eager for their turn at life in the big city.

Reporter's notebook / 'If there is trouble, it will be very bad for the business. That we know'-From Hebron hovel to airport kiosk, on the trail of Holy Land ceramics-Tourists flock to Jerusalem and Jaffa to purchase this ornate flowery pottery — made in Palestinian workshops in the West Bank-By Brett Kline January 3, 2017, 10:29 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

HEBRON, West Bank — The dusty gray single-story workshop and adjoining poorly lit sales outlet fit in well with the decrepit buildings lining the Hebron street. Under the weak yellow streetlights, it feels like a movie set.Inside the workshop, piles of colorful ceramic construction tiles lie helter-skelter on the floor in between shelves full of coffee mugs and espresso cups painted in flowery motifs. Some are decorated with the words “Jerusalem,” “Tel Aviv,” “Holy Land,” or “Peace.”A man and boy are seated at two tables. The boy is rapidly painting tiny red, blue and green flowers on the mugs, with a level of concentration unusual for a 12 year old. He says nothing, but takes the time to smile. The man, perhaps 35, is carefully applying gold trim on a vase likely more beautiful than the flowers intended for it. He glances quickly at the boy’s work, then asks visitors to have a seat. No offer of coffee is forthcoming — though not for a lack of cups. The man’s brother is pulling fired mugs and cups from a top-loading kiln and placing them carefully in a box. Out they go, replaced by the freshly painted items, and the kiln whines into action again. These mugs, and the bowls, dishes, ashtrays and vases produced in similar workshops in the city, have been purchased by visitors to Israel for decades. The colorful, flowery motifs have made their way to hundred of thousands, perhaps millions, of households around the world. These ceramics are ambassadors of passive culture. They belong to the world of souvenirs, things people look at in their homes and remember a one-off visit to Israel — and Palestine. Some visitors do ask about the origins of the ceramics, but most — and most local Israelis — are unaware they are produced by seven hamulas (clans or extended families) in the West Bank city of Hebron. This, for example, is the Al-Okhowa Pottery Center, run by the Ghaithe and Zeloum families.“We export to Jordan and even to the Gulf,” notes Khalif Ghaithe, the brother loading the oven. “But almost everything we make goes to Israel.”“Let me tell you,” he says. “Politics can be a real problem in Israel and Palestine. We all know this.”His brother Lao’i looks up from the gold trim and doesn’t miss a beat to the question, “So how’s business?”-‘We export to Jordan and even to the Gulf, but almost everything we make goes to Israel’-“Business is good, al hamdoolilah [thank God], but it was much better before the Second Intifada,” he says. “Politics? Don’t ask.”Many Jewish Israelis identify Hebron with radical Islamic activity and Hamas, or equally radical Jewish settlers. There are few foreign visitors, except to the Cave of the Patriarchs, and a small area of conflict where nationalist religious Jews and leftist activists go — albeit for different reasons — in an area far from this workshop. But politics aside, Hebron is still the manufacturing capital of the West Bank, with strong markets for ceramic construction tiles, certain household items and even sandals, all sold both in local Palestinian shops and in Israel. The Second Intifada has left its mark. Before the end of September 2000, the seven potter clans in Hebron had 30 workshop-factories and more than 300 employees between them. Today, there are seven factories and perhaps 100 people working.“Today we worry about possible violence between the Mahmoud Abbas and Mohammad Dahlan factions of Fatah,” Ghaithe says straightforwardly. “Before it was with Israel; today it could be here. We don’t know. But if there is trouble, it will be very bad for the business. That we know.”The clay for all seven centers is imported from Italy and Spain through the port of Ashdod. In this workshops, one doesn’t see anyone actually making the mugs.“You want to see the wheel in action?” Ghaithe asks. He makes a phone call. “Let’s go quickly. They are closing up shop.”His car is dusty and worn; the translator drives in the newer rented car. At this hour, most women in Hebron are home cooking dinner. Outside, there are few streetlights and not much traffic, but drivers seem to be in a sudden race. After five minutes of up and downhill turns, the car comes to a stop in front of a small building in Halhul, next to Hebron.A ceramic artisan in his early 20s, Bilal Saleima, turns the electric pottery wheel back on, reaches for a handful of clay and some water, and in less than five minutes, has produced a sugar bowl and lid. Next comes an espresso mug. He says he can spin 100 coffee mugs a day on the wheel.“Yes, I can go to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv and see my work in stores,” he says with a wide smile. He has big, powerful hands that dominate the clay and the wheel. “I have the ishur, the pass, but I don’t go often.” He shrugs. In his free time, he teaches pottery at a local arts school in Hebron. And he cares nothing for politics.“Come back and visit when you want,” he says with a smile. He really means it.He opens his arms towards the dimly lit, chilly, small, cement-floored room. It is obvious that visitors are rare.Back in Hebron at ceramics headquarters, espresso mugs are for sale at NIS 5 each, or about $1.30. Khalef and Loa’i Ghaithe stand by the entrance.“Ahalan wa salan,” they both say. “You are most welcome, any time.”Outside waits a minivan with Hebrew and English lettering advertising guided tours. Two men load up boxes for a run to Jerusalem. Up to 200 pieces go out every night, to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and elsewhere. The drive back to Bethlehem on Route 60 is uneventful, with little traffic and no checkpoints at the Gush Etzion roundabout. The translator is happy for the opportunity to go to Hebron, but could care less about these ceramics. Palestinians do not buy these attractive but lightweight mugs and bowls, he says, offering no explanation.-The Jaffa market-The main street in the Jaffa flea market is warming up to young bohemian Israeli shoppers, alongside domestic and foreign visitors. At Pahcer Siuri’s City of Presents, the only Palestinian-Muslim store on the street, the full stock of ceramics from Hebron has a small but steady stream of buyers. A few also purchase from the store’s modest supply of household items.Almost empty the other day, the espresso mug shelf space is now full. Supplier Itzik Zeloum brought them up from Hebron himself.-‘My father taught me, small profit margin and large volume’Here, the espresso cups go for NIS 9 each, about $2.35 — up from NIS 5 in Khalil. The full size mug is NIS 12, or $3.15, up from NIS 9 at their point of origin.“These are the cheapest prices in Israel,” says owner Pahcer (pronounced Faher). “My father taught me, small profit margin and large volume. And people like to buy small things, mugs, cups, tiles, stuff to put in their bags.”Zeloum also supplies the two small, full-blown souvenir shops across the street, where prices are slightly higher.Pahcer says he sees an average of 70 buying customers a day, and up to 300 on Friday afternoon and Saturday.“The rug and antique dealers, and the souvenir shopkeepers on the street are all religious guys so they close on Shabbat,” he explains. “Of course they do. It’s normal. But I guess many foreign tourists don’t know that. So they come. And they find me.”He says that some people ask where the ceramics are made.“I answer, from Hebron, Khalil. But many people don’t know where that is. But I don’t get into the politics. It’s not worth it,” he says. His grandfather, a Khalili, brought the family here from Hebron 40 years ago, apparently a prudent move. Pahcer was born here in Jaffa. His English is not great, but this reporter’s Hebrew and Arabic are worse.Pahcer can’t imagine living anywhere else. The Israeli Arab is as at home with the hummus and salad which he and his wife share from the small restaurant next door, as he is with her black headscarf and long black robe.A few days later at the airport, which always invites melancholy, ceramics are for sale in a Steimatzky bookstore. When asked if they sell many of these ceramic mugs, or if she knows where they are made, the sales girl pretends not to hear. The price tag reads “9,” but on closer inspection, there is a dollar sign in front of it, making it almost three times as expensive as in Pahcer’s shop. Nobody appears to be buying. Perhaps every good thing has a limit. Happily, the buck stops in Jaffa.

Trump ‘aggressively’ pursuing Netanyahu to attend inauguration — report-Sources say PM considering traveling to Washington for swearing-in ceremony of US president-elect; Trump says Jewish state ‘very, very important’ to him-By Times of Israel staff January 1, 2017, 9:19 am

US president-elect’s White House transition team has been “aggressively” pursuing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to attend the inauguration ceremony in Washington, DC later this month, the New York Post reported on Sunday.“There’s a plan for Trump to meet with Netanyahu,” a source close to the transition team said, according to the paper.“They’re talking all the time. And Netanyahu is talking about possibly going to the inauguration,” the source was quoted as saying. The report said Trump staffers, led by son-in-law Jared Kushner, were “aggressively courting” the Israeli prime minister in an effort to persuade him to attend the January 20 ceremony.Netanyahu’s tense relationship with outgoing US President Barack Obama was exacerbated in recent weeks, after the White House publicly clashed with Israel over its West Bank policy and later declined to veto a UN Security Council resolution condemning settlements.Trump has assured Israel that things will be different after he takes office, and last week lamented that the Jewish state was “being treated very, very unfairly” by the international community.Speaking to reporters outside his Mar-a-Lago estate on Thursday, Trump lambasted the UN for condemning Israel, saying that “horrible places, that treat people horribly, haven’t even been reprimanded” by the international body.He refused to directly answer specific questions regarding Israeli policies, but Trump called himself “very, very strong on Israel.”On Saturday evening, Trump told reporters Israel is “very, very important” to him.“Look, we have to protect Israel, Israel to me is very very important, we have to protect Israel, and I disagree with what he’s done with Israel,” Trump said, referring to Obama. “I listened to Secretary Kerry’s speech, I think it’s very unfair to Israel, what happened.” On Wednesday, Kerry delivered a 70-minute address highlighting the settlement enterprise as a central obstacle to peace, denouncing Israel’s right-wing coalition, and warning that the two-state solution was in jeopardy. Netanyahu castigated Kerry for what he argued was an unjustified assault; Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May also publicly criticized the secretary’s address as unfair and inappropriate. We cannot continue to let Israel be treated with such total disdain and disrespect. Trump taps Jewish aide Stephen Miller to write inaugural address-Incoming senior White House adviser was Trump’s chief campaign speechwriter, reportedly crafted his infamous ‘global interests’ speech-By Eric Cortellessa December 27, 2016, 7:23 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump has commissioned aide Stephen Miller, who penned a controversial speech panned for anti-Semitic overtones, to write his historic inaugural address next month. The 31-year-old incoming senior White House adviser on policy, who is Jewish, is credited with writing most of Trump’s planned speeches during the campaign, including a controversial October address in which he spoke of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton conducting secret meetings with international bankers to destroy US sovereignty.Trump’s remarks were criticized at the time by the Anti-Defamation League for “rhetoric and tropes that historically have been used against Jews and still spur antisemitism,” and others noted its similarities to the anti-Semitic tract “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”That text is a famous anti-Semitic forgery that promulgated the conspiracy theory that a Jewish-run cabal of global financial elites controlled world affairs.Other noted speeches that Miller crafted include Trump’s Republican national convention address, which was noted for its dark tones and portrayal of a rapidly deteriorating world.According to Politico, Trump’s team of insiders is planning to spotlight the incoming president’s first-term agenda in “nationalistic” rather than “ideological” terms, calling for the need to address the nation’s border security, rebuild its infrastructure, strengthen its military and prevent American jobs from going overseas.Miller, Trump’s de facto chief speech writer, will be responsible for articulating that vision in what will be Trump’s first direct address to the nation and world as president. It is not yet clear whether Miller will revive Trump’s contentious statement from July’s GOP convention, when the candidate said of America’s set of national problems: “I alone can fix it.”Earlier this month, Trump announced Miller would assume an official role in the administration. “As senior adviser to the president for policy, Miller will… be responsible for directing White House policy staff, managing speechwriting functions, and working to ensure the enactment of the President’s policy agenda,” the transition team said in a statement.Originally from Santa Monica, California, Miller was reportedly born to liberal Jewish Democrats, but became a conservative later in life when he read the National Rifle Association’s CEO Wayne LaPierre’s book “Guns, Crime, and Freedom” and subsequently became a gun enthusiast. After graduating from Duke University in 2009, he was hired by Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the first senator to endorse Trump’s candidacy and now his nominee to be attorney general.

Father of murdered Jerusalem girls agrees to ‘partial autopsy’-Woman, 36, suspected of killing children, setting their room ablaze before taking her own life in Jerusalem apartment-By Times of Israel staff January 2, 2017, 10:41 am

The father of four young girls found murdered in Jerusalem Sunday agreed to a “partial autopsy” of two of the girls. The girls were found dead a day earlier in a suspected murder-suicide in the capital. Firefighters found the children, ages 11, 9, 4 and 11 months, dead in a locked bedroom of a fifth-story apartment that had been set ablaze in southern Jerusalem. The girls’ mother, who is the primary suspect in their murder, was found hanged in another room. The bodies of the children were sent to the Abu Kabir forensic institute late Sunday. The father, who was not at home at the time, at first refused to allow autopsies of the children. The family is religiously observant, and Jewish religious law requires respect for the bodies of the dead, as well as a swift burial. But on Monday morning, after unspecified “signs of violence” were found on the bodies of two of the girls, police investigators asked the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court to issue an order that would allow the autopsies to go forward against the father’s wishes.Police say only an autopsy will enable them to determine whether the girls were killed in the fire, or, as investigators suspect, by strangulation beforehand by their mother.By Monday afternoon, the father gave his consent to a “partial autopsy” of the two girls who showed the signs of violence. According to media reports, if the findings indicated a need for further investigation, he would approve more invasive autopsies of all four of the children. An initial investigation of the fire concluded that a mattress had been sprayed with lighter fluid and set ablaze in the apartment. The father, who is not a suspect in the children’s deaths, arrived at the apartment about half an hour after the emergency services. A spokesperson for the United Hatzalah rescue organization said the father was being treated by a psychotrauma team. It was not clear where he was at the time of the fire.Jerusalem municipal social services had placed the father in a hotel room for the night, where he is staying with family members.Four firefighting teams responded to the initial call, entering the locked apartment through the balcony before discovering the lifeless body of the 36-year-old mother. A quick scan of the apartment led firefighters to a locked bedroom from which smoke was emanating and where they found the bodies of the four children. The names of the children and the parents, immigrants to Israel from France, were not released to the public. Friends, acquaintances and neighbors of the family expressed their horror and disbelief at the tragedy.A neighbor told Ynet that the “family had made aliyah from France 13 years ago, the children were born here. The mom always looked to be a strong, assertive woman.”Another neighbor said he had seen the mother and daughters playing in an adjacent park a day earlier and everything seemed normal.A friend of the family, who gave Ynet the first name Shmuel, said the family was “exceptional,” describing the mother as “brilliant, caring and warm.”“They always looked to be a couple raising their children with a lot of love. The community here is in shock,” he said.Hebrew-language media reported that the woman had been receiving psychiatric treatment, but there was no confirmation of the reports.Jerusalem firefighter Arik Abuluf described the scene when rescuers first arrived.“We found her lying on the floor. The room that the children were in was completely burned and because it was closed, the flames used up the oxygen.“It was the most difficult thing I have seen in all my years in the fire service,” he added.Rescuers said the woman’s body was found on a balcony outside the apartment. Neighbors who saw her body hanging on the balcony called the emergency services and were advised by them to access the balcony and cut her down. They were not able to enter the apartment, which was locked from the inside, and waited until firefighters reached the scene and broke open the door.Shalom Klein, a volunteer with the Zaka search and rescue organization, called the scene “shocking.”“I arrived at the scene of the fire and the neighbors brought me to the apartment balcony. The mother was dead. Her four children were burned to death. ZAKA Jerusalem volunteers are dealing with the bodies and collecting the remains,” Klein said.

After the unthinkable, papers wrestle with the unanswerable-The suspected murder of four young girls by their mother, who then took her own life, leaves heartbreaking pictures, accounts and reams of questions in its wake-By Joshua Davidovich January 2, 2017, 1:58 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

There are a lot of tough things journalists are asked to do, but answering the unanswerable – like why a mother would apparently kill her four young daughters and hang herself – may be the most impossible. But as a terrible 2016 gave way to a bitter start to 2017, that is what Israeli papers seemingly try to do, as they attempt to bring the pain, horror and tragedy of the suspected quadruple murder-suicide to readers.Heartrending pictures of a body bag containing a small child being carried out of the apartment are displayed on the front pages of broadsheet Haaretz and tabloid Israel Hayom, while Yedioth Ahronoth features blurred out smiling pictures of the five fatalities alongside the headline “How could a mother?”While the paper is long on questions, including if the children were killed in the fire that was set in their home or were strangled to death beforehand, it’s short on answers, and so is forced to suffice with what little it does know, giving a play by play of how the scene unfolded for the first responders to the Jerusalem apartment, including the father, who came into the home as his wife’s hanged body was discovered and alerted firefighters to the fact that there should have been four girls there as well.“When he started to scream I ordered the firefighters to go room to room to check if someone else was in the home,” fire official Motti Melamed tells the paper. “Every time a room was searched, the firefighters would say ‘no children found, and we thought maybe they were in a safe place outside the home. But then the firefighters got to a room at the end of the hallway, which was locked and the door was very hot – and immediately we understood that’s where the fire was coming from. The whole thing took two or three minutes.”The paper also gives the image of the mother as a happy, confident woman without any special problems that were known about, but Haaretz reports that a month ago she went to a psychiatric facility in the capital for depression. While neighbors say everyone seemed perfectly normal with the family, a source in the welfare department tells the paper that when the mother called three months ago to ask about childcare services they feared “there could be a problem with the children.”But when the service asked the family to come into the office, they refused, the source tells the paper.“They didn’t want to listen, they only wanted help on the phone,” the source says. While those two papers are hesitant to outright blame the mother, who was seemingly suffering from some sort of mental illness, Israel Hayom blasts the headline “Heartless mom” atop its story, leaving little doubt as to how it sees what happened.“When the suspicion that the mother burned her four children and then hanged herself became clear, it seemed the word ‘horror’ was too small to describe the incident,” the paper’s story reads, though it still uses the word several times. In a commentary alongside a tragic list of other cases where parents killed their children (which doesn’t even come close to including all the similar tragedies in just the past few years) Hagit Ron-Rabinovich asks “what would freeze her heart” but comes away with nothing but more questions, writing that the fact that she was mentally ill isn’t an answer at all.“It’s the first and only possibility raised as those with common sense try to absorb, understand, and drill into what happened, and there’s no comfort in it,” she writes. “It just raises more and more questions and bewilderment, and especially the lament ‘how is it possible this tragedy wasn’t prevented?”Unfortunately, the father in the Jerusalem incident isn’t the only person in Israel mourning a daughter slain in a seeming senseless act of violence, as he’s joined by the father of Lian Zaher Nasser, killed in a shooting rampage at an Istanbul nightclub that claimed the lives of 39 people just after midnight as 2017 was rung in.“I know the security situation isn’t good in Turkey. I asked her not to go but unfortunately she went,” her father is quoted saying in Yedioth.Nasser was in a group of four women, including Dr. Ala’a Abdulahi, who worked with her in a Tira dental clinic. Abdulahi gives an account in Israel Hayom of the scene in the swanky club as terror struck their New Year’s party.“There was music, we were having a great time. After two hours the shooting started. I thought it was a fight and they told us to lie on the floor and the shooting didn’t stop,” she’s quoted saying. “Right after they yelled ‘Allahu akbar’ I realized it was a terror attack and me and my three friends spread out and tried to escape.”Writing before the Islamic State took responsibility for the attack, Haaretz analyst Zvi Bar’el leaves open the possibility that it could have been carried out by a Kurdish group, despite the fact that the PKK normally targets military facilities and not civilians, in a move that could make fighting terror in Turkey even more difficult.“Trying to determine who is behind it based on the target may be misleading, especially when these groups have already studied the way the Turks respond. When an attack is attributed to the Kurdish Workers Party, the PKK, Turkey launches its troops against Kurdish enclaves in Turkey, Iraq and Syria. When the attack is attributed to ISIS, the response is attacks on ISIS bases in Syria. From here the road is short to ‘changing places,’” he writes. “An attack on the Kurds is welcome as far as ISIS is concerned, and because that organization has suffered some impressive defeats at the hands of the Kurds in Syria and Iraq, ‘enlisting’ the Turkish army to battle the Kurds by carrying out an attack on military targets serves their purpose. Likewise, the Kurds might also attack civilian targets to bring Turkey’s wrath down on ISIS.”-Grilling time-This type of reporting on Turkey is only allowed outside the country, as Ankara issued a media blackout on the attack, a practically de riguer move. It’s a tactic that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be wishing he had, but even if he can’t shut down unfriendly news outlets, he can use Israel Hayom as an attack dog – and indeed the coming police grilling of Netanyahu is met by the tabloid with a large story detailing a talk purportedly given by renegade former parliamentary aide and Zionist Union also-ran Eldad Yaniv on how the media uses the police to bring down the prime minister.“According to Yaniv, one of the central figures in the plan to bring down Netanyahu is Channel 10 journalist Raviv Drucker. The Zionist Union man sums up: ‘Drucker puts pressure via the TV, and the attorney general opens an investigation,’” the paper reports, based on an expose by right-wing media watchdog Mida on Yaniv’s talk.Yedioth reports that Netanyahu will likely use the funeral of former justice minister Yaakov Neeman later Monday as an excuse to duck out of the interrogation early, after police finally got him to sit down with them.Netanyahu isn’t the only one hoping for it to move quickly, though. Haaretz’s lead editorial also calls for swift progress, though likely with a different result.“Netanyahu accuses the media of persecuting an innocent man. One would therefore expect him to hasten to prove his innocence, so that he could then return with redoubled energy to affairs of state. He would also thereby set an example for ordinary citizens wanted for questioning. But instead, he is playing the victim and ignoring his obligations as a state official,” the editorial reads. “This behavior is intolerable, and the law enforcement system must not accept it. Before a petition is filed to the High Court of Justice against Netanyahu and the attorney general to force a rapid, uninterrupted investigation, [Attorney General Avichai] Mandelblit must tell the prime minister to make himself available to the investigators with no further delay, for as much time as they need.”

42 Watch therefore:(FOR THE LAST DAYS SIGNS HAPPENING) for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

On June 20 at 3:50am, here in Patmos suddenly my room was full of light, and there are no lights around here. It is a house all by itself at the end of the road near a monastery. Lo and behold, when I was wide-awake - I saw five beautiful angels. I saw their faces -perfect and human-like, but full of light. I saw their eyes, their hair, their hands. On my right side were two angels, and when I looked to the left I saw three other angels with wings. They had beautiful white robes falling to the floor - something I can't describe with human words. I wondered why five angels had come, but I was trembling and shaking. I wanted to cry, but I could not. Just before I saw these angels in the Spirit. I had seen myself in a great meeting of multitudes, and I was preaching in English. An interpreter was on my left with dark hair and a grey suit, but I can't remember what language he was speaking. I was prophesying this message: My church, you preach love, you teach love, but you need to practice love - to show love. There is need of unity in my body. There are many divisions among you. My spirit will not move and work where there is no unity. There is carnality in my church; too much uncleanness in my church. I desire and I want a holy people. I died to made you holy. While I was prophesying in the spirit I was trembling. My eyes opened and I was looking at the great multitude. And suddenly, in the midst of the prophecy, these mighty angels appeared. I went back from the pulpit and thought I was going to fall down. I am now wide-awake, but this is all happening in the spirit. Some power helped me not to fall down and I wondered what was happening. Then suddenly the first angel on my right side said, We are five angels from  the five continents. We are here to give you messages from the five continents of the world. The moment I heard that, I also heard the multitude crying out, Ohhh, Ohhh, Ohhh; I believe that multitude saw the angels also.Somehow the Lord showed me that in the days to come, in many parts of the world, God is going to reveal Himself through ministering angels. It's going to happen publicly; it's going to happen in churches - thousands of people seeing angels at the same time. They will be ministering to the Body in these last days. Then came this message from the angels: What you see and hear, tell it to the nations. So it's not something to keep to myself. Whether they accept it or don't accept it, I have to tell it to the nations.

FIRST ANGEL -TO DR DOCTORIAN-We are five angels from  the five continents. of the world.

The first angel said: I have a message for all of Asia. When he said that, in a split few seconds, I could see all of China, India, the Asian countries like Vietnam, Laos - I've never been to those countries. I saw the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. And then the angel showed me all of Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya and down to Australia and New Zealand.I am the angel of Asia, he said. And in his hand I saw a tremendous trumpet that he is going to blow all over Asia. Whatever the angel said, it's going to happen with the trumpet of the Lord all over Asia. Millions are going to hear the mighty voice of the Lord. Then the angel said, There shall be disaster, starvation - many will die from hunger. Strong winds will be looked like has never happened before. A great part shall be shaken and destroyed. Earthquakes will take place all over Asia and the sea will cover the earth.I saw this on June 20. Today is August 16. A few weeks ago I heard the news of villages completely wiped out and washed into the sea in Papua New Guinea. Thousand of lives in great jeopardy. That happened a few weeks ago, and the angel told me it is going to happen all over Asia. The earth will fall into the sea, I heard the angel say, part of Australia will be shaken. Australia will be divided, and a great part will go under the ocean. This was frightening - I wondered whether I was hearing right. But the angel said,Millions will die in China and in India. Nation will be against nation, brother against brother. Asians will fight each other. Nuclear weapons shall be used, killing millions. Twice I heard the words,  Catastrophic! Catastrophic! then the angel said, Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world.I was trembling while the angel was speaking. Then he looked at me and smiled and said, There shall be the greatest spiritual awakening - bondage will be broken. Barriers will be removed. And all over Asia - China - India - people will turn to Christ. In Australia there shall be tremendous revival. I heard the angel of Asia say, It is the last harvest. Then as if the Lord were speaking, he said, I shall prepare My church for the return of Christ. I was happy with such good news after the message of judgment. All the time the five angels were in my room I could feel their presence - it was tremendous.

SECOND ANGEL - TO DR DOCTORIAN-We are five angels from  the five continents of the world.

Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said, Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran. I saw those countries in a few split seconds. All of Turkey and those [inaudible;] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another. I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries.I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction - men destroying one another.I heard these words, Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come. The angel said, The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children of God. I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said, This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those countries. The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

THIRD ANGEL - TO DR DOCTORIAN-We are five angels from  the five continents. of the world.

Then one of the angels with wings showed me Europe from one end to the other - from the north all the way down to Spain and Portugal. In his hand he had a scale of measurement. I saw him fly over Europe, and I heard the words, I am grieved. I am grieved. Unrighteousness, uncleanness, ungodliness - all over Europe. The sin has risen to heaven. The Holy Spirit is grieved. I saw the rivers of Europe flooding and covering millions of houses. Millions drown. After seeing this, I read the news a few weeks ago. Czechoslovakia had the worst flooding ever. I also heard that the big river in China is in tremendous danger of thousands of houses being destroyed in flooding. I didn't know all this news until after I had seen the vision and heard what the angels told me.Suddenly I heard earthquakes all over Europe.  Countries that have had no earthquakes shall be shaken, said the angel. And suddenly, in my spirit, I saw the Eiffel Tower in Paris crumbling falling down. A great part of Germany destroyed. The great city of London - destruction everywhere. I saw floods all over Scandinavia. I looked to the south and saw Spain and Portugal passing through hunger and great destruction. Many will die from hunger all over Spain and Portugal. I was disturbed by all this news, and I said, Lord, what about your children? The angel said, I shall prepare them. They shall be looking for the appearing of the Lord. Many will cry to me in those days and I will save them. I shall perform mighty miracles for them and show them My power. So in the midst of great destruction, there will be the grace of God in those countries. I was happy that God has His protection over His children.

FOURTH ANGEL - TO DR DOCTORIAN-We are five angels from  the five continents. of the world.

Now we go to Africa. I saw the fourth angel with wings fly over Africa, and I could see from Capetown in the south all the way to the north of Cairo - I saw all the countries there, more than fifty of them. The angel of Africa had a sword in his hand - a tremendous, sharp sword.Suddenly I heard him say, Innocent blood has been shed. Divisions amongst the people generations far from the Lord - they have killed one another, thousands of people. I have seen my faithful children in Africa, and I shall reward all the faithful in the continent of Africa. I shall bless them abundantly. I shall control the weather - scorching and burning of the sun in some parts. Great rivers shall dry up, and millions will die from starvation. In other parts, flooding. Foundations shall be shaken. My sword shall judge the unrighteous and the bloodthirsty. So many earthquakes shall happen that rivers shall flow different directions in the continent, flooding many villages. I saw great pieces falling from the sky over different parts of Africa .There shall be trembling of the earth like has not been seen since the creation. None shall escape the sword of the Lord. I saw the River Nile drying up. It is the god of Egypt. Fishes dead and stinking all over Egypt. A great part of the middle of Africa will be covered with water - millions dying. Lord, I said, It is all bad news. All destruction. Any good news? The Lord said, The final day has come. Judgment day is here. My love has been refused now, and the end has come. I was shaking and trembling. I thought I cannot bear it.

FIFTH ANGEL - TO DR DOCTORIAN-We are five angels from  the five continents. of the world.

Then I saw the last angel flying over North and South America - all the way from the North Pole down to Argentina. From the east of the U.S.A. to California. I saw in his hand a bowl. The angel said he would pour out over these countries the judgments that were in the bowl. Then I heard the angel say, No justice anymore. No righteousness. No holiness. Idolatry. Materialism. Drunkenness. Bondage of sin. Shedding of innocent blood - millions of babies being killed before they are born. Families are broken. An adulterous generation. Sodom and Gomorrah is here. The days of Noah are here. False preachers. False prophets. Refusing of my love. Many of them have the imitation of religion, but denying the real power. When I heard all that, I begged the angel, Can you not wait for a little while? Don't pour it. Give a chance for repentance. The angel said, Many times God has spared and has spoken, but they have not listened. His patience has come to an end. Beware, the time has come. They have loved money and pleasure more than they have loved Me. As the angel began to pour from the bowl in his hand, I saw tremendous icebergs melting. When that happened I saw floods all over Canada and North America - all the rivers flood;destruction everywhere. I heard the world market collapsing with mighty earthquakes, and New York skyscrapers were tumbling - millions dying.I saw ships in the ocean sinking. I heard explosions all over the north country. I saw the angel pouring over Mexico and two oceans joining together- the Atlantic and the Pacific. A great part of north Brazil covered with water, the Amazon River turning into a great sea.Forests destroyed and flooded. Major cities in Brazil destroyed; earthquakes in many places. As the angel poured, great destruction took place in Chile and Argentina as never before. The whole world was shaking. Then I heard the angel say, This will happen in a very short time.I said, Can't you postpone? Don't pour these things out all over the globe. And suddenly I saw the five angels standing around the globe lifting up their hands and their wings towards heaven and saying, All glory to the Lord of heaven and earth. Now the time has come and He will glorify His Son. The earth shall be burned and destroyed. All things shall pass away. The new Heaven and New Earth shall come. God shall destroy the works of the devil forever. I shall show My power - how I will protect My children in the midst of all this destruction.

Be ready for that day, for the Lord has come.My room was full of light from the brightness of the angels. Then suddenly they ascended up to heaven. As I looked up I saw the angels go in five directions. I know they already have started their duties. For more than an hour I could not move. I was wide-awake, trembling from time to time. I said, Lord, shall I leave Patmos now? He said, No, I brought you here for a purpose. I said,The message from the angels all over the world is not good news. It is judgment, punishment, destruction, devastation. What will people say about me? I've always been a preacher of love, peace and good news. The angel said, It is our message. You are the instrument, the channel. What a privilege that God has chosen you to give this message to the nations. I said, Lord, Thy will be done.To God be the glory.
