This covered long-running programs, including education, as well as emergency funds for crises such as the war in Syria. The US has been the largest donor, giving one-third of the total budget. Journalist says Obama, Farrakhan photo suppressed at request of black lawmakers-Photographer and others did not want to hurt Obama's chances, if he ran for president, by distributing his 2005 picture with noted anti-Semite-By JTA-TOI-29 January 2018

Barack Obama posed for a photo in 2005 with Louis Farrakhan, the virulently anti-Semitic leader of the Nation of Islam movement, and the photographer said he suppressed its publication at the request of a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. The future president was the US senator from Illinois at the time. The Trice Edney News Wire first published the photo on January 20. It quotes the photographer, Askia Muhammad, saying that after snapping the picture at a meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus, an unidentified member of the caucus asked him immediately not to run the photo.Muhammad said he gave the disk containing the photo to Farrakhan’s chief of staff. This 2005 photo with Minister Louis Farrakhan and former President Barack Obama was captured by Askia Muhammad at the Congressional Black Caucus meeting. It was hidden for 12 years and has now been released in the journalist's book, “The Autobiography of Charles 67X”. #Farrakhan pic.twitter.com/QWTzT2l7bQ— The Nation of Islam (@OfficialNOI) January 25, 2018-As there was already talk in 2005 of Obama running for president, Muhammad said he and others did not want to harm the Democrat’s chances. It isn’t clear who was employing Muhammad at the time, but he had previously worked for the Nation of Islam publication, The Final Call.Jewish leaders have repeatedly denounced Farrakhan as an anti-Semite, noting his speeches accusing Jews variously of conspiring to control the government, the media, and Hollywood.Farrakhan apparently referred to the photo in 2016 toward the end of Obama’s second term, saying he had met privately with Obama and had a photo of them together. He didn’t specify the date of the meeting. The newly released photo shows Obama and Farrakhan with members of Farrakhan’s family and the Rev. Willie Wilson, an organizer of Farrakhan’s Million Man March in 1995.Farrakhan expressed support for Obama’s candidacy in 2008, and Obama’s pastor at the time, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, had praised Farrakhan on multiple occasions. That made Farrakhan an issue during the primary campaign that year, and Obama’s rival at the time, Hillary Clinton, called on him to repudiate Farrakhan. Obama did so during a primary debate. The Talking Points Memo, which also reported Thursday on the photo, solicited comment from Obama. A spokesman directed the liberal news site to an interview Obama gave in 1995 when he was first running for the Illinois state Senate, and after he had attended Farrakhan’s Million Man March on Washington, D.C.“What I saw was a powerful demonstration of an impulse and need for African-American men to come together to recognize each other and affirm our rightful place in the society,” Obama told the Chicago Reader, describing his impressions of the march. “There was a profound sense that African-American men were ready to make a commitment to bring about change in our communities and lives.”But he continued: “But cursing out white folks is not going to get the job done. Anti-Semitic and anti-Asian statements are not going to lift us up. We’ve got some hard nuts-and-bolts organizing and planning to do. We’ve got communities to build.”

Slovenia president throws doubt on recognition of Palestine-Premier says he will back measure only if it will 'contribute to the solution of its bilateral issues with Israel'-By AFP and TOI staff-JAN 29,18

Slovenia’s president cast doubt on Friday on his country recognizing Palestine as a state in the near future, days after the foreign minister talked up the chances of such a move.President Borut Pahor’s office said in a statement to AFP that he would only back the recognition of a Palestinian state “in circumstances that would contribute to the solution of its bilateral issues with Israel but not to the worsening of relations.”But the statement added that for the moment, “those circumstances are not in place.”Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec had said on Monday he hoped Slovenia would officially recognize a Palestinian state in March or April and that this would “strengthen Palestine’s negotiation in the Middle East peace process.”Last week, the Slovenian ambassador in Tel Aviv, Barbara SuÅ¡nik, told The Times of Israel the issue of recognizing Palestinian statehood had been pending in the country’s parliament since 2014, and was only coming to a vote now.Slovenia would be the second of the EU’s 28 member states to recognize Palestine while a member of the EU. Sweden was the first to officially recognize the Palestinian state as an EU member, in 2014. Eight other countries took the step before entering the EU: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Malta and Cyprus.Recent reports of Solevnia’s possible recognition of Palestine follow US President Donald Trump’s December recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and plans to move the US Embassy to the city from Tel Aviv.Trump said his declaration reflected reality on the ground, and was not intended to prejudge any future arrangement between Israel and the Palestinians regarding the disputed city, though he later said it had taken Jerusalem off the table. Welcomed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and leaders across most of the Israeli political spectrum, the move caused an uproar throughout the Muslim world and was panned by the United Nations, the European Union, and many European countries.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told Meretz party leader Zehava Galon Friday that “the Oslo Accords are dead,” Channel 10 news reported.Abbas, speaking with Galon to express condolences on the death of her father, said US President Donald Trump had, in several past conversations, “promised a good deal to [resolve] the conflict, and then came this unfortunate surprise, which we cannot accept.”Palestinians froze their ties with Washington, and said they would not accept the administration as a peace broker, following Trump’s December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The US has reacted to the boycott by threatening to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars it provides in aid.Galon recounted that Abbas told her: “We are prepared for negotiations, and we never intended to leave the talks, but regrettably no one is offering us talks, especially not the Americans, who now wish to punish us.”He added, she said, that “The Oslo Accords are dead, and even though Israel has not lived up to its obligations, we have so far not halted security cooperation. We are waiting to see if there can be negotiations under fair mediators.”But he stressed that that term no longer applied to the US, and expressed hope that Europe, the Middle East Quartet (which includes the US) and Arabic countries could come together to provide such mediation. At the start of a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Davos Thursday, Trump said the US would no longer provide aid to the Palestinians if they refused to engage in US-brokered peace talks with Israel. He suggested that his recognition of Jerusalem had settled one of the key issues in the conflict.“The hardest subject they had to talk about was Jerusalem,” he said. “We took Jerusalem off the table, so we don’t have to talk about it anymore. They never got past Jerusalem. We took it off the table.”The Palestinians rejected the threat, saying peace talks were “off the table” if the American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital was not reversed.Chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said that the president’s latest remarks showed “the US has disqualified itself from playing a role in achieving peace” and that his Jerusalem decision was a “wake-up call” to Arab leaders.“Jerusalem is not off the negotiations table, rather the US is outside the international consensus. Those who say that Jerusalem is off the table are saying that peace is off the table,” said Erekat. “There will be no peace without East Jerusalem being the sovereign capital of the State of Palestine.”Erekat accused Trump of “blackmailing and punishing the Palestinian people for fighting and believing in their freedom and human rights per international law and UN resolutions.” He added that the US president “could buy many things with his money, but he won’t be able to buy the dignity of our nation.“This is not a game for the people of Palestine. It is about our very existence that continues to be denied by Israel with full US support,” he said, adding that the Palestinians would continue to pursue statehood while Trump fuels “international anarchy.”Abbas himself appeared to express doubt over the Jewish state’s right to exist in a speech earlier this month to the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Central Council in Ramallah.During the speech Abbas portrayed Zionism as a European plot against the Palestinian people. He asserted that the State of Israel was formed as “a colonial project that has nothing to do with Judaism,” to safeguard European interests. The Palestinian leader also suggested the Jews of Europe chose to remain in their home countries during the Holocaust, rather than emigrate.

Tillerson insists Russia to blame for Syria chemical attacks-Moscow has sought to block Western-backed efforts at the UN to impose sanctions on Damascus over use of unconventional arms-By AFP-TOI-JAN 29,18

WARSAW, Poland — US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Saturday said he stands by his claim that Russia bears responsibility for recent chemical attacks in Syria, despite strong denials from Moscow.“These are just unacceptable deployments of chemicals in ways that violate all conventions which Russia itself has signed up for. It violates agreements that Russia undertook to be responsible for identifying and eliminating the chemical weapons inside of Syria,” Tillerson said during a visit to Warsaw.“The chemical weapons are clearly there, they’re being used against civilian populations — and the most vulnerable are children — inside of Syria,” Tillerson told reporters, in a joint press conference with Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz.“So we are holding Russia responsible for addressing this. They are [Syrian President Bashar] Assad’s ally. They are members of those conventions and they made commitments. They need to deliver on those commitments.”Tillerson first made the accusations on Tuesday, as diplomats from 29 countries met in Paris to push for sanctions and criminal charges against the perpetrators of the chemical attacks in Syria.Russia and China have blocked Western-backed efforts at the UN to impose sanctions on Damascus over their use.On Wednesday, Russia lashed out at Tillerson for having “hastily accused the Syrian — as they call it — ‘regime’ for the attack in Eastern Ghouta,” adding “now they are trying to drag Russia into this as well.”Damascus has been repeatedly accused of using chemical weapons, with the United Nations among those blaming government forces for an April 2017 sarin gas attack on the opposition-held village of Khan Sheikhun that left scores dead. There have been at least 130 separate chemical weapons attacks in Syria since 2012, according to French estimates, with the Islamic State group also accused of using mustard gas in Syria and Iraq.Next week, Moscow will hold negotiations in the Russian city of Sochi, aimed at ending Syria’s civil war.

Trump, Pence effigies hanged and burned in video on Palestinian TV station-Wattan, an independent channel, says West Bank protesters were acting in 'rejection' of US cuts to UNRWA; sign equates Zionism with Nazism, US with Islamic State-By TOI staff-JAN 29,18

Palestinian television on Saturday aired a video of Palestinians carrying out a mock-execution of US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.Effigies of the US leaders were hanged and then burned in a street in the Aida refugee camp north of Bethlehem.Palestinians froze their ties with Washington following Trump’s December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The US has reacted to the boycott by freezing payments worth $100 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) earlier this month, and the White House and Congress are threatening to further cut aid to the Palestinians.Wattan TV said the action was intended as a “rejection” by protesters of US cuts to UNRWA. Wattan is an independent TV station based in Ramallah. Before the “execution” protesters held up Palestinian flags and various placards, including one with pictures of Trump, Pence and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, all with ‘X’ marks on them. Above them was written: “Zionism = Nazism = fascism. USA = ISIS = terror.”A poll released last week showed support for armed struggle has almost doubled among Palestinians in the last six months: Only 26 percent of Palestinians said they supported a peace deal, a staggering decline from 45% last June. Thirty-eight percent supported armed struggle, up from just 21% in the previous survey. The same poll, by the Tami Steinmetz Center for Peace Research at Tel Aviv University and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah, found that Israeli backing for a decisive military offensive to end the conflict increased during the same period by almost 60 percent. The rise in militancy was believed to be tied to Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on December 6.The declaration saw a spike in violent protests in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. There has also been a surge in rocket attacks from Gaza, and Hamas, the terror group which rules Gaza and seeks to destroy Israel, has called for a new intifada to liberate Jerusalem and urged Palestinians to confront soldiers and settlers. The Central Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PCC) — the second-highest decision-making body for Palestinians — recently voted to officially declare the US no longer fit to be the sole sponsor of peace talks.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told Meretz party leader Zehava Galon Friday that “the Oslo Accords are dead,” Channel 10 news reported.

US ex-envoy warns Israeli leaders not to ‘burn bridges’ with Democrats-Former ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro says Jewish state should take concerns of progressives in America seriously rather than throw in lot with Republican party alone-By TOI staff-JAN 29,18

Former US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro on Saturday cautioned Israeli leaders to be wary of “burning bridges” with the Democratic Party and aligning themselves solely with the Republicans, amid a sharp uptick in partisan divides over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as reflected in the findings of a new Pew Research Center poll released Tuesday.“Israeli leaders may find it difficult to resist the temptation to ride this wave, embracing one side in partisan US political battles — as when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arranged his speech in Congress against the Iran deal solely with the Republican congressional leadership,” Shapiro said in an op-ed co-written with Tamara Cofman Wittes and published by the Atlantic. “But that approach comes at the cost of alienating even longtime allies across the aisle, and when the next crisis inevitably hits, Israel’s leaders may regret having burned those bridges.”According to the poll, Democrats are almost as likely to sympathize with the Palestinians as they are with Israel in the Israeli-Palestinian peace conflict, while support for the Jewish state among Republicans is nearly three times higher than Democrats.Twenty-seven percent of Democrats told the Pew Research Center they sympathize with Israel over the Palestinians, compared to 25% who said their sympathies lie with the Palestinians.Among Republicans, those numbers were 79% and 6%, respectively.“Based on the findings, some Israeli pundits and politicians, and many on the American right, have been arguing that Israel and its supporters should give up on the Democratic Party and its elected representatives as supporters of Israel,” Shapiro wrote, pointing to a tweet by the Republican Jewish Coalition, which boasted that the “GOP is the pro-Israel Party.” Shapiro, however, warned that the poll was “a terrible foundation for such claims,” adding that the results did not necessarily imply that Democrats were anti-Israel.“The poll question is faulty because sympathy for Palestinians should not imply hostility to Israel, nor should sympathy for Israel require disregard for the fate of Palestinians,” the ex-envoy wrote. “A solution to their conflict enshrining two states for two peoples is the outcome most preferred by Americans regardless of party, and administrations of both parties have sought to help both Israel and the Palestinians achieve their goals in a two-state solution.”While Shapiro acknowledged that “support for Israel is, in fact, becoming a politicized issue in the United States, and partisan divides on policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are indeed getting wider,” he insisted that it would be a grave mistake for Israeli leaders to throw in their lot with the Republican party alone.“Looking at the underlying data from the survey responses, we see that 34 percent of this year’s sample identify as independents — more than identify as Republicans (26 percent) or Democrats (33 percent),” he continued. “The gap between independents and Republicans remains large and trending larger, but the independents’ trend tracks the Democratic trend — both moving toward less sympathy with Israel relative to the Palestinians in the conflict between them. That’s the pattern that should worry Israelis, because independents and Democrats together represent more than two-thirds of Americans.”“Americans are far more divided on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict than they are on Israel or the US-Israel relationship and so when Israel advocates and Israelis themselves use this poll question as a proxy for American support for Israel, they are not doing themselves any favors.”Although the percentage gap in support for Israel remained fairly steady between the parties in the two decades after 1978, the parties’ views on Israel began to diverge in 2001, with support among Democrats having fallen from 38% to 27% today, while among Republicans it has risen from 50% to 79%.“In recent years, some Americans have come to look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lens of human rights — and this is especially true for younger Americans, African Americans, and Hispanic Americans,” Shapiro wrote. “This makes them sensitive to the hardships faced by Palestinian civilians, and to certain Israeli practices, like housing demolitions. These groups form a larger proportion of the voting public than they have in the past, and a growing proportion of the Democratic Party’s core constituency. And yes, there is some anti-Israel sentiment on the left end of the progressive political spectrum, just as there is some on the right end of the conservative camp.”According to Shapiro, “the survey results point to how specific aspects of Israeli policy, such as the expansion of West Bank settlements that make a two-state solution more difficult, [and] affect the way Israel is viewed in the United States.”In light of these trends, and due to the changing demography in America, Shapiro advised Israelis to consider what policies can contribute to the US-Israeli relationship, and which might erode its foundations.“Israelis don’t have to take all the blame for the diplomatic stalemate. Palestinians bear plenty of their share, from failing to respond to negotiating proposals, to inciting and glorifying violence, to denying the historical Jewish connection to the land of Israel,” the former ambassador wrote. “But an Israeli government that does not seem committed at least to keeping the two-state solution alive and viable for the future will likely find there are some American supporters whose sympathy they will struggle to retain.”“Israeli leaders would be wise not to allow the perception to take hold that they are writing off whole chunks of the Democratic camp, or disrespecting elected officials from the Democratic Party,” Shapiro continued. “And without weakening their own relationship with President Trump, Israeli leaders should find ways to demonstrate sensitivity to progressives’ concerns, especially when those concerns touch on issues core to the values Israel and the United States share.”

Palestinian security forces uncover 12 roadside bombs in West Bank-Improvised devices discovered on road linking two Palestinian villages; radio report says they may have been intended for use against IDF vehicles-By TOI staff-JAN 29,18

Palestinian security forces on Saturday uncovered and dismantled at least 12 roadside bombs on a road connecting two Palestinian villages near the city of Tulkarem in the West Bank.A Palestinian driver noticed suspicious objects on the road, located in the West Bank’s Area A which is under full security control of the Palestinian Authority, and alerted PA security forces, a source with the security forces told Israeli news site Ynet.Members of the security forces’ engineering department scrambled to the scene and found 12 improvised explosive devices placed into the road, the source said, each weighing between 20 and 30 kilograms. The source added it appears the bombs were there for some time. The road is mainly used by Palestinian civilians although Israeli military vehicles have been spotted on it, said the PA source.Army Radio said the devices may have surfaced amid heavy rains. It said investigators believe they were planted for use against IDF vehicles. An investigation is ongoing.

UN chief calls for Syria referral to International Court-Guterres tells Security Council of 'serious violations,' including blocking aid deliveries and medical care to millions-By Edith M. Lederer-TOI-JAN 29,18

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is again calling on the UN Security Council to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court, pointing to “serious violations” including blocking aid deliveries and medical care to millions. The UN chief also called on all combatants, UN member states and civil society to cooperate with an independent panel established by the General Assembly in December 2016 to assist in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for war crimes or crimes against humanity in Syria.Guterres said in a report to the council circulated Friday on the humanitarian situation in Syria in December that “accountability for serious violations is a requirement under international law and central to achieving sustainable peace.”During December, he said, no aid was delivered to over 417,000 people in nine “besieged” locations, and only 60,000 of the nearly 2.5 million Syrians living in “hard-to-reach” areas received humanitarian help. He said 95 percent of the besieged population is besieged by Syrian government forces.Guterres said “access for the United Nations and its partners to those people living in besieged and hard-to-reach locations remained a critical concern.”He said deliveries of food and other aid remained “extremely challenging” in many areas last month “as a result of active conflict, shifting conflict lines, administrative impediments and deliberate restrictions imposed on the movement of people and goods by the parties to the conflict.”The secretary-general singled out the deteriorating humanitarian situation for the estimated 393,000 people living in eastern Ghouta, an opposition-held pocket besieged by Syrian forces. Prices for basic goods there are some 30 times higher than in neighboring Damascus city, “far beyond the purchasing power of most residents,” he said.Guterres noted that in the two days leading up to December 28, 29 urgent medical cases were evacuated from eastern Ghouta. But he said “an additional 600 people remain in need of urgent medical evacuation” and “18 have already died while waiting to be evacuated.”The UN chief called on all countries with influence over the Syrian government and opposition fighters “to do their utmost” to facilitate medical evacuations and humanitarian aid into eastern Ghouta.Syrian authorities also continued rejecting or removing “life-saving and life-sustaining medical items” from convoys last month, he said. In addition, 16 health care facilities and personnel were attacked in December. While Guterres again urged that Syria be referred to the International Criminal Court, the search for justice has proven to be exceedingly difficult, especially at the United Nations.A Security Council resolution backed by more than 60 countries to refer the Syrian conflict to the ICC was vetoed by both Russia and China in May 2014.A new attempt at the council to refer Syria to the ICC would almost certainly face a similar fate. But following the double veto, several countries, including Sweden, Germany, France and Finland, said they were investigating or prosecuting alleged perpetrators of grave crimes in Syria. In November, Russia also vetoed renewal of the expert body from the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons that was determining responsibility for chemical weapons attacks in Syria. The Joint Investigative Mechanism or JIM had blamed Russia’s close ally, President Bashar Assad, for using chlorine gas in two attacks and the nerve agent sarin in one — accusations that Moscow strongly criticized. By contrast, Russia supported the JIM’s findings that the Islamic State extremist group used mustard gas twice. On Tuesday, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia called a Security Council meeting and circulated a draft resolution that would replace the JIM.The council session coincided with a meeting in Paris where the US, France and 22 other countries launched a new organization aimed at identifying and punishing anyone who uses chemical weapons.US Ambassador Nikki Haley called the Security Council meeting a distraction, saying the US is ready to re-establish the JIM “with its original independent and impartial mandate, right now. But anything less is unacceptable.”

Why humans will happily follow a ROBOT messiah: Religions based on AI will succeed because we tend to 'worship supreme understanding', claim experts-By Harry Pettit For Mailonline-Updated: 10:47 EST, 11 December 2017

Same drive that compels people to believe in religions will also work for AI-People will eventually rely on a 'robot messiah' to solve society's problems-This is because we 'have a tendency to worship supreme understanding'-Last month a former Google engineer formed the world's first church to follow an artificially intelligent being.A religion based around a robot god will succeed because humans tend to 'worship supreme understanding', experts have claimed. One researcher has said the same drive that compels people to believe in higher beings and follow religions will also work for so-called AI 'Godheads'.Others have commented that, like religion, people will eventually rely on a 'robot messiah' to solve society's problems.Last month, former Uber and Google engineer Anthony Levandowski formed the first church to follow an artificially intelligent being.WAY OF THE FUTURE-Former Uber and Google engineer Anthony Levandowski formed the first church to follow an artificially intelligent being in November. The religion, known as 'Way of the Future' (WOTF), claims our species can better itself by following the instructions of a robot that is 'a billion times smarter than humans'.It will eventually have a gospel called 'The Manual', rituals and even a physical place of worship, Levandowski claims.Workshops and educational programs have already begun in the San Francisco area. Levandowski says everything in the church will be open source and members of the church would have special social media accounts. He has appointed four other people to the Council of Advisers and the listing says each week they will spend a few hours organising workshops and meetings. In 2017, the Internal Revenue Service listed the religion as having received $20,000 (£15,000) in gifts, $1,500 (£1,100) in membership fees and $20,000 (£15,000) in other revenue.WOTF has $7,500 (£5,700) put aside for wages, although Levandowski, who earned $120 million (£91 million) from Google, says he will not receive any money. The religion, known as 'Way of the Future', claims our species can better itself by following the instructions of a robot that is 'a billion times smarter than humans'.Now AI expert and lawyer John Mitchell has said humans have a tendency to 'worship supreme understanding', and that this also applies to AI.'We [believe] there must be some higher power that causes lightning, sunsets, and crashing waves - or at least speaks to the bottom of our beings, rather than ignore them as ho-hum background,' he told Fox News.Mr Mitchell said the same thing could happen with AI, adding that robots could help us better understand religion.Dr Stephen Thaler, President and CEO of Imagination Engines and an AI and consciousness expert, said people will rely on AI to solve society's problems.'An AI would provide the equivalent of a "messiah" - having many orders of magnitude more processing elements than the brain, enabling it to gift us with solutions to the most daunting social, political, economic, and environmental challenges,' he said. But if AI develops this level of intelligence, it might choose not to be worshipped, said author and consultant Peter Scott.'I would expect the AIs that evolve in the next 50 years to be very rational and, if conscious, not want to be worshipped,' he said.'If they have the human race's best interests at heart (and God help us if they don't) then they would want us to have as much right of self determination as possible.'The new comments come just a month after Way Of The Future (WOTF) was officially registered as a religion by Anthony Levandowski. The ex-Google engineer, who first announced plans for the creed in May, says he is 'raising a god' that will that charge of humans.WOTF will eventually have a gospel called 'The Manual', as well as rituals and even a physical place of worship.Levandowski named himself as 'dean' of WOTF, giving him complete control until his death or resignation. He said his robot god, which will be a 'billion times smarter than humans' will take charge of its subjects, who will relinquish power to a being of higher intelligence. The filed documents for WOTF give its purpose is to 'develop and promote the realisation of a Godhead based on Artificial Intelligence'.Workshops and educational programs have already begun in the San Francisco area. Levandowski says everything in the church will be open source and members of the church would have special social media accounts. He has appointed four other people to the Council of Advisers and the listing says each week they will spend a few hours organising workshops and meetings. In 2017, the Internal Revenue Service listed the religion as having received $20,000 (£15,000) in gifts, $1,500 (£1,100) in membership fees and $20,000 (£15,000) in other revenue.WOTF has $7,500 (£5,700) put aside for wages, although Levandowski, who earned $120 million (£91 million) from Google, says he will not receive any money.WHO IS ANTHONY LEVANDOWSKI? Anthony Levandowski is best known for helping create Google Street View and engineering Waymo and Uber's self-driving cars.Levandowski is currently at the heart of a legal fight between Google's parent company Alphabet and Uber.Waymo, the self-driving car subsidiary which Alphabet owns, is suing Uber, claiming it stole trade secrets to make their own self-driving cars. The engineer they say is responsible for the theft is Levandowski who they allege downloaded 14,000 secret files before leaving Google in 2016 after nine years at the company.A month after his departure, he founded Otto, a company which specialised in self-driving trucks.Seven months later, Uber acquired Otto and Levandowski began working on the ride-sharing company's self-driving cars.In February this year, Alphabet filed a multi-billion lawsuit against Uber and Otto accusing it of stealing trade secrets.Levandowski was called to give evidence in March but he pleaded the Fifth Amendment throughout, refusing to answer questions on the grounds that his answers may incriminate him.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

U.S. Justice Department recovers FBI officials' missing text messages-[Reuters]-By Sarah N. Lynch-YAHOONEWS-January 27, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department's internal watchdog said Thursday it recovered five months of missing text messages between two Federal Bureau of Investigation officials whom Republicans have accused of bias against President Donald Trump. In a letter to several key Republican lawmakers, Inspector General Michael Horowitz said he would not object if the Justice Department shares with congressional committees the messages between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page that were recovered using forensic tools. In texts that were previously released to Congress, Strzok and Page referred to Trump as an "idiot" and a "loathsome human." After news reports about the messages, lawmakers demanded to see them amid Republican concerns that agency officials were biased against Trump.Strzok and Page both worked on the FBI's investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, and they also each briefly worked on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe into whether the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia.Their cellphones are just two of "thousands" whose texts were not backed up and stored on the FBI's systems between Dec. 14, 2016 and May 17, 2017, according to a Justice Department official. The FBI has blamed the snafu on "misconfiguration issues" that occurred while the bureau was rolling out new software updates for Samsung 5 devices. But Republicans have claimed the timing is suspect, especially because May 17 marks the date that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel.Strzok and Pages' text messages have become a focal point of congressional Republicans' investigation into whether the FBI is biased against Trump and gave Clinton more favorable treatment in its investigation of her private email use.Horowitz, whose office is conducting its own review into the FBI's handling of the Clinton matter, discovered the texts over the summer and informed Mueller. Strzok was then reassigned. Page, meanwhile, left the team in July after her 45-day detail ended. While Republicans have accused the two of bias against Trump, some of the texts suggest he was just one of many people targeted in their routine political banter. At times, for instance, they were also critical of Clinton. In addition, another Strzok text also appears to contradict the notion that the FBI is out to get Trump, after he told Page he was hesitant to join Mueller's team because of his "gut sense and concern there's no big there there."(Reporting by Sarah N. U.S. attorney general orders probe of FBI agents' text messages-[Reuters]-By Sarah N. Lynch-YAHOONEWS-January 23, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has ordered an investigation into missing text messages exchanged between two Federal Bureau of Investigation staffers accused of expressing views against President Donald Trump, the Justice Department said.Texts between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page exchanged between Dec. 14, 2016, and May 17, 2017, are among a broader batch of missing phone messages that the FBI's system failed to store because of a software upgrade glitch on many Samsung 5 cellphones.Republicans have said the texts, which referred to Trump as an “idiot” and a “loathsome human,” raise concerns the FBI is biased against Trump and may have given Hillary Clinton, his Democratic presidential rival, favorable treatment after deciding not to recommend criminal charges in connection with the investigation of her use of a private email system while she was secretary of state.Strzok and Page were involved in that investigation and were briefly assigned to work with Special Counsel Robert Mueller on the investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.Media reports said the texts between them were exchanged on FBI-issued phones during the course of an alleged extramarital affair.Mueller was appointed on May 17, the same day when some of the text messages were not properly stored.“We will leave no stone unturned to confirm with certainty why these text messages are not now available to be produced and will use every technology available to determine whether the missing messages are recoverable from another source," Sessions said in a statement.Several congressional Democrats on Tuesday blasted Republican attacks on the FBI, saying the same people they were accusing of bias against Trump actually helped him, after the FBI disclosed it was reopening the Clinton probe just weeks before the November 2016 presidential election."These Republican attacks show their desperation at the fact that Mueller already has obtained two guilty pleas, two indictments, and at least two cooperating witnesses," the senior Democrats on the House of Representatives Judiciary, Oversight and Intelligence committees said in a joint statement.Six congressional committees learned about the missing texts last Friday after they had initially requested copies of Strzok's and Page's texts between July 2015 and July 2017.The failures by the FBI's system to store the messages were initially uncovered by the Justice Department's inspector general, who is in the midst of a broad review into whether the FBI made missteps in its handling of the Clinton investigation. After the inspector general informed Mueller over the summer about the texts, Strzok was removed from the team and reassigned. Page completed her 45-day detail on Mueller's team in July."I am pleased to hear that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is going to launch an investigation into what happened to those texts, and I hope they are uncovered," Republican Representative Bob Goodlatte told Fox News Channel. "They illustrate a conspiracy on the part of some people and we want to know a lot more about that."(Reporting by Sarah N. Democrats withdraw offer to fund Trump's border wall-[Reuters]-By Richard Cowan and Susan Cornwell-YAHOONEWS-January 26, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats said on Tuesday they had withdrawn an offer to fund U.S. President Donald Trump's border wall, as tough negotiations over the future of young illegal immigrants known as "Dreamers" resumed in the Senate.A day after the end of a government shutdown linked to wrangling over immigration, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said he pulled the offer because of what he said was Trump's failure to follow through on the outlines of an agreement the two men discussed on Friday."So we're going to have to start on a new basis and the wall offer is off the table," Schumer told reporters. An aide said the offer was withdrawn on Sunday.Trump said on Twitter late on Tuesday night: "Cryin’ Chuck Schumer fully understands, especially after his humiliating defeat, that if there is no Wall, there is no DACA. We must have safety and security, together with a strong Military, for our great people!"The Congressional Hispanic Caucus expressed fears on Tuesday that Republicans in the House of Representatives would pursue a harsh immigration bill written by Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte. The House measure would allow Dreamers to renew their legal status for three years, instead of putting them on a pathway to citizenship, and would call for hiring 10,000 more agents at U.S. borders while shutting down some visa programs and taking other steps to find people who are in the country illegally.Republican Trump said during the 2016 election campaign Mexico would pay the cost of building a wall along the southwestern border of the United States to keep out illegal immigrants. Mexico has rejected the idea.As a result, Trump has been forced to ask Congress for U.S. taxpayer funds for the wall. Government estimates are that it could cost more than $21 billion. With Democrats and many Republicans arguing there are more effective border enforcement tools than a wall, the proposal has become a major sticking point in immigration negotiations, which in turn have complicated talks about funding federal agencies. The Senate's No. 2 Democrat, Dick Durbin, asked by a reporter whether Schumer offered Trump $25 billion for the wall in a major concession to the president, did not dispute the figure, but said: "He did it in the context of a negotiation."-PROTECTING THE 'DREAMERS'-Democrats have been spearheading an effort to protect about 700,000 young Dreamers after Trump announced in September the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program instituted by his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama. The program, which began in 2012, gave qualified Dreamers, who were brought illegally to the United States as children, temporary protection from deportation and the ability to study and work in the United States.Senator John Cornyn, the No. 2 Senate Republican, criticized Schumer for pulling the wall funding offer."That basically sets the DACA discussion back," he told reporters.Cornyn said there had been discussions of he and Durbin being a "clearing house" for suggestions from senators on legislation to rescue Dreamers from the threat of deportation and provide permanent protections for them.In agreeing on Monday to end a three-day government shutdown - the first since 2013 - and fund the government until Feb. 8, Senate Democrats got a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he would allow an immigration debate on the Senate floor in the near future.Durbin said a similar commitment was now needed from Paul Ryan, the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, where a Dreamer bill would presumably face a much harder path to passage than in the Senate. The White House on Tuesday rejected the idea that a bipartisan bill sponsored by Durbin and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham could be the core of a solution.White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the proposal was "totally unacceptable to the president and should be declared dead on arrival."Trump himself has vacillated on immigration between tough rhetoric demanding a U.S. border wall and a softer tone urging a "bill of love" for Dreamers."Nobody knows for sure that the Republicans & Democrats will be able to reach a deal on DACA by February 8, but everyone will be trying," Trump tweeted.(Reporting by Richard Cowan and Susan Cornwell; Additional reporting by Amanda Becker, Makini Brice and Steve Holland; Editing by Grant McCool, Peter Cooney and Paul Tait)

Spanish government asks court to block Puigdemont's bid to lead Catalonia-[Reuters]-By Paul Day-YAHOONEWS-January 28, 2018

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's government on Friday decided to ask the Constitutional Court to block former leader Carles Puigdemont's bid to lead Catalonia again, the deputy prime minister said.Puigdemont fled to Belgium shortly after declaring Catalonia independent from Spain in October, a move considered illegal under Spanish law. He faces charges including rebellion and sedition if he returns to Spain but he is the separatists' candidate to lead the region. The row over Puigdemont's candidacy will come to a head on Tuesday when the Catalan parliament plans to vote on it."The government must use every tool made available by the laws and the constitution to make sure that a fugitive cannot be sworn in and become the head of the regional government," deputy prime minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said after announcing the appeal to Spain's top court.Puigdemont reacted immediately. "They are panicking in the face of the will of the people," he said on Twitter. The newly elected speaker of the Catalan parliament, Roger Torrent, nominated Puigdemont on Monday as the sole candidate for regional leader, against warnings by Madrid that he couldn't take the position.Puigdemont has not ruled out travelling to Barcelona to take part in the parliamentary vote but has not said he would do it either. The government's decision to appeal directly to the constitutional court comes after the Council of State - the supreme consultative council of the Spanish government which advises on serious issues - advised against it on Thursday.(Additonal reporting by Inmaculada Sanz; Writing by Paul Day and Ingrid Melander; Editing by Jesús Aguado and Matthew Mpoke Bigg)

Turkey's Erdogan says military operation to make big sweep east across Syria-[Reuters]-By Ece Toksabay and Lisa Barrington-YAHOONEWS-January 28, 2018

ANKARA/BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday Turkish forces would sweep Kurdish fighters from the Syrian border and could push all the way east to the frontier with Iraq -- a move which risks a possible confrontation with U.S. forces allied to the Kurds. The Turkish offensive in northwest Syria's Afrin region against the Kurdish YPG militia has opened a new front in the multi-sided Syrian civil war but has strained ties with NATO ally Washington.Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist group but the militia has played a prominent role in U.S.-led efforts to combat the hardline Islamic State in Syria.Since the start of the incursion, dubbed "Operation Olive Branch" by Ankara, Erdogan has said Turkish forces would push east towards the town of Manbij, potentially putting them in confrontation with U.S. troops deployed there."Operation Olive Branch will continue until it reaches its goals. We will rid Manbij of terrorists, as it was promised to us, and our battles will continue until no terrorist is left until our border with Iraq," Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara.Any drive by Turkish forces toward Manbij, part of Kurdish-held territory some 100 km (60 miles) east of Afrin, could threaten U.S. efforts in northern Syria. The United States has about 2,000 troops in Syria, officially as part of the international, U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State.U.S. forces were deployed in and around Manbij to deter Turkish and U.S.-backed rebels from attacking each other and have also carried out training missions in the area.Washington has angered Ankara by providing arms, training and air support to the Syrian Kurdish forces. Turkey sees the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a deadly insurgency in Turkey's largely Kurdish southeast for three decades."How can a strategic partner do this to its partner?" Erdogan said, referring to the United States. "If we will wage a battle against terror together, we will either do this together or we will take care of ourselves."-HUMAN TOLL-Although the campaign is now in its seventh day, Turkish soldiers and their Free Syrian Army rebel allies appear to have made limited gains, held back by poor weather that has limited air support.Three Turkish soldiers and 11 of their Syrian rebel allies have been killed in clashes so far, Turkey's health minister said on Friday. A further 130 people were wounded, he said, without saying if they were civilians or combatants.Turkey said it had killed at least 343 militants since the operation started. The Kurdish-led forces have said Turkey was exaggerating the number it had killed. The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG, said 308 fighters from the Turkish side had been killed in the first week of the incursion.Forty-three SDF fighters had died, including eight women, the SDF said. In addition, 134 civilians had been wounded and 59 killed, it said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, said at least 38 civilians have been killed since the start of the operation, two of them by SDF shelling.Seven members of one family died and one was injured when a house collapsed under Turkish shelling in the early hours of Friday in the town of Maatala in Afrin region, the head of the Kurdish Red Crescent in Afrin, Nuri Sheikh Qanbar, said.  U.S. POLICY RETHINK? Military action by Turkey against the Kurdish fighters should prompt Washington to rethink its policy and address Turkish security concerns, President Tayyip Erdogan's chief diplomacy adviser said."The moment Turkey starts using its military power instead of soft power in the region, however sour ties are at that moment, it encourages Washington to stop and think," Gulnur Aybet told Reuters in an interview."I believe the U.S. will put forward some truly satisfying alternative solutions to ease Turkey's security concerns," she said. While Aybet did not elaborate on what such measures could include, she said they would follow on from a recent U.S. proposal to establish a "safe zone" in northern Syria.Turkey has said the United States has offered to work on a 30 km (19 mile) safe zone, but it says trust between the NATO allies must be restored for such a proposal to be considered.Aybet said Turkey was aware that a confrontation on the ground in Manbij carried risks of pushing ties to a breaking point."Everyone is aware of that risk. We hope that the Americans are aware, too," she said. The Kurdish-led autonomous administration that runs Afrin on Thursday called on the Syrian government to defend its border with Turkey in Afrin despite Damascus' stance against Kurdish autonomy. The Syrian government has said it is ready to target Turkish warplanes in its airspace, but has not intervened so far. It suspects the Kurds of wanting independence in the long-run.(Additional reporting by Ali Kucukgocmen in Istanbul; Tuvan Gumrukcu and Tulay Karadeniz in Ankara; Writing by David Dolan; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

Scientists move Doomsday Clock ahead to 2 minutes to midnight-2nd time the clock, used as a metaphor to measure how close we are to destruction, has moved 30 seconds-By Nicole Mortillaro, CBC News Posted: Jan 25, 2018 9:58 AM ET Last Updated: Jan 25, 2018 12:19 PM ET

Robert Rosner, chairman of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, right, joined by Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists member Lawrence Krauss, left, moves the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock to two minutes to midnight during a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington.Nicole Mortillaro-Senior Writer, Science and Technology.Nicole has an avid interest in all things science. As an amateur astronomer, Nicole can be found looking up at the night sky appreciating the marvels of our universe. She is the editor of the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and the author of several books. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has moved the Doomsday Clock ahead by 30 seconds — to 11:58 p.m. — the symbolic time of civilization's destruction."It is with considerable concern that we set the Doomsday Clock, as of today," Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the organization, said during a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. "It is two minutes to midnight." The clock, first used in 1947, is a metaphor meant to measure how close we are to destroying the world. This is the second time the clock has come this close to midnight. The first was in 1953, after both the U.S. and Soviet Union tested their first thermonuclear bombs within six months of one another.'To call the world's nuclear state dire is to understate the danger and its immediacy.'- Rachel Bronson, Bulletin of Atomic Scientists-The first time the Doomsday Clock moved was after the Soviet Union successfully tested its first atomic bomb in 1949. It moved from the original seven minutes to midnight, to three minutes to midnight.Lawrence Krauss, chair of the Bulletin, said, "The danger of some sort of nuclear catastrophe is greater than it was in the Cold War." In 1991, at the end of the Cold War, the hands moved the farthest they've ever been: 17 minutes to midnight. In an uncharacteristic move, the scientists moved the clock by 30 seconds in 2017, to 2½ minutes to midnight. Typically, the clock is moved by the minute. The bulletin said at the time: "The probability of global catastrophe is very high, and the actions needed to reduce the risks of disaster must be taken very soon." There have been heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea over the past few months, which Bronson said did influence the changing of the time. "To call the world's nuclear state dire is to understate the danger and its immediacy," said Bronson.Just two days into the new year, U.S. President Donald Trump responded to a remark by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that he had a nuclear button on his desk by tweeting: "North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the 'Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times. Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!— @realDonaldTrump -While there has been some easing of tensions between North and South Korea after they agreed to participate in the Winter Olympics as one team, there are concerns about  North Korea's nuclear missiles. The country has reportedly conducted several tests of its rockets, with the latest — capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to North America — just last November.More than a nuclear risk-The group of scientists cited concerns of climate change and technological innovation, including artificial intelligence and cyber threats, in moving up the time.Sivan Kartha, who heads the bulletin's science and security board and is a senior scientist at the Stockholm Environmental Institute, emphasized concerns over climate change, noting that in 1953, the only time the clock has been this close to midnight, it wasn't even an issue."Since that time what we've dumped into the atmosphere has increased sixfold. And as a consequence, Earth has warmed by one degree," Kartha said.He noted decreasing ice in the Arctic, as well as catastrophic events such as the wildfires across the U.S. and Canada. The group also cited concerns over public distrust of political leaders and the media, saying it is drawing away from the focus on real threats."The nuclear situation this year is a strong concern," said Krauss. "We feel the world is getting more dangerous."

Heavy rain unearths ancient graves in backyard in Gaza-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 28, 2018

BEIT HANOUN, Gaza Strip (AP) — A Palestinian says he has discovered an ancient burial ground in the backyard of his house in the Gaza Strip.Abdelkarim al-Kafarna said Friday he found a tomb consisting of nine burial holes with bones and some clay pots.Archeologists in Gaza believe the site is about 2,000-year-old, dating back to the Roman era, when the territory was part of the far-flung Roman Empire. But they say further tests are needed to determine the exact age.Al-Kafaran said he found it by accident after heavy rains this week unearthed parts of the underground chamber.Gaza, now ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas, is on the route between Egypt and ancient Levantine civilizations. It is packed with ancient archaeology endangered by urban sprawl, conflict and years of neglect.

Trump threatens to pull aid to Palestinians if they don't pursue peace-[Reuters]-By Steve Holland and Yara Bayoumy-YAHOONEWS-January 25, 2018

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to withhold aid to the Palestinians if they did not pursue peace with Israel, saying they had snubbed the United States by not meeting Vice President Mike Pence during a recent visit.Trump, speaking after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the World Economic Forum, said he wanted peace. However, his remarks could further frustrate the aim of reviving long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian talks.Palestinians shunned Pence's visit to the region this month after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and vowed to begin moving the U.S. embassy to the city, whose status is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Trump's endorsement in December of Israel's claim to Jerusalem as its capital drew universal condemnation from Arab leaders and criticism around the world. It also broke with decades of U.S. policy that the city's status must be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians."When they disrespected us a week ago by not allowing our great vice president to see them, and we give them hundreds of millions of dollars in aid and support, tremendous numbers, numbers that nobody understands -- that money is on the table and that money is not going to them unless they sit down and negotiate peace," Trump said. The United States said this month it would withhold $65 million of $125 million it had planned to send to the U.N. agency that helps Palestinian refugees. The UNRWA agency is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from U.N. states and the United states is the largest contributor.A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the United States had taken itself "off the table" as a peace mediator since it recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital."Palestinian rights are not up to any bargain and Jerusalem is not for sale. The United States can't have any role unless it retreats its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital," spokesman Nabil Abu Rdainah told Reuters by phone from Jordan.Abbas has called Trump's Jerusalem declaration a "slap in the face" and has rejected Washington as an honest broker in any future talks with Israel. Abbas left for an overseas visit before Pence arrived.Abbas has said he would only accept a broad, internationally backed panel to broker any peace talks with Israel. The U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley also criticized Abbas.Israel's government regards Jerusalem as the eternal and indivisible capital of the country, although that is not recognized internationally. Palestinians see East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.Speaking in Davos, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said only the United States could broker a peace deal."I think there's no substitute for the United States. As the honest broker, as a facilitator, there's no other international body that would do it," Netanyahu said.Trump said Palestinians had to come to the negotiating table."Because I can tell you that Israel does want to make peace and they're going to have to want to make peace too or we're going to have nothing to do with them any longer," Trump said.Trump said his administration had a peace proposal in the works that was a "great proposal for Palestinians" which covers "a lot of the things that were over the years discussed or agreed on", without providing specifics.Trump said his declaration on Jerusalem took it off the negotiating table "and Israel will pay for that", adding "they'll do something that will be a very good thing" without elaborating.Earlier at the World Economic Forum, Jordanian King Abdullah said Jerusalem had to be part of a comprehensive solution. He said Trump's decision had created a backlash, frustrating Palestinians who felt there was no honest broker. But he added: "I'd like to reserve judgment because we're still waiting for the Americans to come out with their plan."King Abdullah’s Hashemite dynasty is the custodian of the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, making Jordan particularly sensitive to any changes of status there. The last talks collapsed in 2014, partly due to Israel's opposition to an attempted unity pact between Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas, and because of Israeli settlement building on occupied land that Palestinians seek for a state, among other factors.Palestinians want the West Bank for a future state, along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. Most countries consider as illegal the Israeli settlements built in the territory which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war.Israel denies its settlements are illegal and says their future should be determined in peace talks. The United States has said it would support a two-state solution if the Israelis and Palestinians agreed to it.(Additional reporting by Ali Sawafta in RAMALLAH, Ari Rabinovitch in JERUSALEM, Michelle Nichols at the UNITED NATIONS and Noah Barkin and Dmitry Zhdannikov in DAVOS; Writing by Yara Bayoumy; Editing by Mark Bendeich)

UN Security Council to inspect ‘Iranian-made’ missile debris-Washington adamant weapons fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels were provided by Tehran-By AFP-JAN 28,18-TOI

UNITED NATIONS — The UN Security Council will travel to Washington on Monday to inspect debris from missiles allegedly provided by Iran to Yemen’s Houthi rebels and hold meetings at the White House, diplomats said. The ambassadors are expected to meet with President Donald Trump as the US administration seeks international action against Iran, diplomats said.US Ambassador Nikki Haley last month presented the fragments as “undeniable” evidence that a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels at Saudi Arabia in November was Iranian-made.That claim was bolstered when a UN panel of experts concluded in a recent report to the council that Iran had violated the arms embargo on Yemen by failing to block supplies of missiles to the rebels.Haley has invited her UN counterparts to see the missile debris stored in a warehouse at a Washington military base.“The evidence is undeniable. The weapons might as well have had ‘Made in Iran’ stickers all over it,” Haley told a press conference last month. The “evidence” stored in Washington includes other pieces of military material allegedly provided by Iran including fragments of an anti-tank missile and drones.Iran has strongly denied arming the Houthis and last month accused Haley of presenting “fabricated” evidence that the November 4 missile fired at Riyadh airport was Iranian-made.Haley is seeking to persuade the Security Council to take action against Iran, possibly by imposing sanctions, but will likely face opposition from Russia, which has friendly ties with Tehran.A separate report last month said UN officials had examined the missile fragments and found that they were of “common origin” but they were unable to reach any firm conclusions about whether Iran was the source. The US mission did not immediately respond to a request for information about the council visit to Washington. It will be the second time that the top UN envoys meet with Trump, who sat down for a lunch meeting with the ambassadors in April last year.Relations between the United Nations and the US administration have been strained over Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, his threats to scrap the Iran nuclear deal and funding cuts. The council voted 14-1 to reject Trump’s Jerusalem decision, prompting Haley to resort to the US veto to block the condemnation. The General Assembly later approved by a vote of 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions, the same resolution.

Israel agrees to sell 30 aging F-16 planes to Croatia-Agreement, advanced during Netanyahu's meeting with PM Andrej Plenkovic, said to be worth half a billion dollars; still requires US approval-By Jacob Magid-TOI-JAN 28,18

DAVOS, Switzerland — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic agreed to move forward with the sale of Israeli F-16s to Croatia on Thursday, the Prime Minister’s Office announced on Friday. The arrangement was advanced during a meeting held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The deal — which will send some 30 F-16s to Croatia — is estimated to be worth half a billion dollars, according to Hadashot news. However, the sale is still subject to the terms of a tender in Croatia and also requires US approval, as Washington produces the planes.Israel has been seeking a buyer for the aging fleet that its Air Force stopped using a number of years ago, according to Hadashot news. Some 30 old planes have been retired by Israel’s Air Force in recent years. Also during their meeting Thursday, the two leaders agreed to expand cooperation on various fronts including on economic issues, security and tourism, the PMO said.Netanyahu flew home Friday morning from Davos after two days of marathon meetings with over a dozen world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel  and Rwandan President Paul Kagabe.Prior to boarding his plane back to Israel, the prime minister summarized the trip to reporters, simply saying “these are good days for Israel.”

Islamic State planned Paris-style attack for Barcelona: report-The assault, which intended to use Kalashnikov rifles and bombs in multiple crowded spaces, was foiled by the arrest of a Moroccan member of the cell-By AFP-JAN 28,18-TOI

MADRID — The Islamic State group planned a Paris-style attack on crowded areas in Barcelona weeks before its November 2015 rampage in the French capital, according to a report published in a US magazine. An IS network had planned to attack crowded public places in Spain’s second city in September 2015 but was disrupted by the arrest of the operative at the center of it, Moroccan national Abdeljalil Ait el-Kaid, according to the report published in CTC Sentinel, a US-based publication that researches terrorism.“Investigators have learned the disrupted plot to strike Barcelona was meant to be similar to the one later executed in Paris, and was meant to also involve operatives from France and Belgium with whom el-Kaid was meant to link up with,” it said.“As with the Paris attacks, the Barcelona plan was to involve the use of Kalashnikov rifles and bombs in multiple crowded spaces, such as concert halls, dining areas, and sports events,” it added. The report, published in the January edition of CTS Sentinel, was prepared by two top researchers on global terrorism at the Real Institute Elcano, a Madrid think tank.It was based on interviews with police, intelligence officers, and judicial officials with knowledge of the case, as well as judicial documents that are not subject to a gag order.El-Kaid lived in Torrevieja on the Mediterranean coast of Spain until September 2014, when he left to join the Islamic State group in Syria. There, he allegedly joined the circle of Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Belgian who allegedly led the cell that carried out the Paris attacks that killed 130 people.El-Kaid was arrested in June 2015 in Warsaw, Poland, while in transit from Istanbul on his way back to Spain on Abaaoud’s orders, to prepare the attack in Barcelona, according to the report. This plot was not related to the attacks in Barcelona and the nearby seaside resort of Cambrils in August 2017 that killed 16 people, according to the researchers. The only survivor among the 10 gunmen who carried out the killing spree in Paris on the night of November 13, Salah Abdeslam, is due to appear in court in Belgium early next month. The heavily armed jihadists attacked the national stadium, bars and restaurants in the French capital, as well as the Bataclan concert venue, in a bloodbath claimed by IS.

If the front pages of Israeli newspapers are an accurate reflection of the zeitgeist of the nation, then what they say Friday morning is that there is not much doing in US president Donald Trump’s strongest comments yet about withholding Palestinian aid and taking Jerusalem “off the table.”While the news is certainly near the top of coverage, only Israel Hayom leads its front page with coverage from Davos, and even then the treatment is somewhat modest by the paper’s standards. The other dailies, meanwhile, devote far more front page real estate to domestic issues, such as the plight of African migrants deported from Israel and heavy rains across the country. What coverage there is of the meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu focuses mainly on the president’s assertion that he’s made talks easier by removing Jerusalem from negotiations, and that if the Palestinians don’t come to the table, they will lose out on the almighty dollar.“No talks, no money,” reads a headline in Israel Hayom, writing that, “Trump dramatically shifted the parameters of all future talks between Israel and the Palestinians, and for the first time clearly placed the full burden of responsibility for creating a peace process on the Palestinians.”In Yedioth’s telling, Trump “sharpened his stance against the Palestinians.”Haaretz, though, notes that what changed isn’t necessarily the parameters of the talks but the administration stance, with his statements “contradicting what he himself said and what his vice president recently told Israelis: that the US decision to recognize the city as Israel’s capital will not influence the final status of its borders.”Apparent u-turns notwithstanding, Israel Hayom columnist Amnon Lorde writes that Trump’s alignment with Netanyahu won’t spell the end of the Palestinians, but it does signal the demise of “Palestinianism.”“There is a country called Israel and it has a capital and that’s the truth, and it needs to be recognized. This is the correct side of history,” he writes. “Is it possible now to return to talks? The answer is yes. But the Palestinians will need to get used to a situation in which Israel comes to the table from a position of strength, and the goals of talks will be limited to upgrading Palestinian sovereignty to something less than a state. What are thought to be the core issues won’t come up anytime soon.”Jerusalem may be off the table, but Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman’s future is certainly up for debate, with the Yisrael Beytenu head making news both for fights over Shabbat and who can be heard on the army’s radio station.Liberman’s decision to go shopping in Ashdod to protest the city trying to shut stores on the Jewish day of rest — seemingly at the behest of Interior Minister Aryeh Deri — speaks volumes about the right-secular party and its future, Haaretz’s Yossi Verter writes.“Liberman’s perfectly normal act of weekend shopping – which only in Israel is headline news – is shaking up the coalition, some of whose members are demanding the prime minister’s intervention. What this shows is that Yisrael Beiteinu intends to run independently in the next election,” he writes. In Yedioth, Sima Kadmon also notices Liberman trying to help himself to some media attention and votes.“After weeks of relative quiet, Avigdor Liberman went this week on the attack. It began with a well-publicized visit to Ashdod on Saturday and continued throughout the week, raising the question of whether there is a connection between the number of mandates received by Yisrael Beytenu in the recent polls and the defense minister’s activism on issues that are not in the military sphere,” she writes. “When I ask the question to Liberman, he says in his refined language that whoever says this is a complete idiot.”Liberman’s various plays have gotten little attention in Israel Hayom, seen as closely aligned with Netanyahu, a possible sign that the prime minister indeed sees him as an increasing threat. Then again, the right-wing paper never quite aligns with the other dailies, and while attention has focused elsewhere on pilots and others who are fighting against Netanyahu’s plan to deport migrants, the paper runs an interview with pilot-cum-MK Yoav Kisch (Jewish Home), who says he’ll fly the migrants back to Africa himself if need be.“The infiltrators, who returned of their own will, were mostly from Eritrea,” he says, using the government’s preferred term for asylum-seekers. “If there were truly danger to their life there, as they claim, they would do everything to go back to some other place. The claim that Israel is sending these migrants to their deaths is lies and slander.”In Haaretz, though, reporter Tamar Baras finds that life isn’t exactly peaches for those sent back to South Sudan , with famine, war, and children dying. Rami Gudovich, a social worker dealing with the migrants, says some 100 who have returned to South Sudan have died, there have been several accounts of rape, and things are just as bad in other East African countries as well.“Sometimes I think it’s better to go back to Israel and be in jail,” one former asylum-seeker tells the paper.

As Gaza approaches ‘famine,’ Israel, rather than world, appears most concerned-Following US aid cuts from UNRWA, Palestinian residents hold near-daily protests and coastal enclave appears on brink of economic collapse-By Avi Issacharoff-TOI-JAN 28,18

Residents of the Gaza Strip are growing increasingly desperate over food shortages, with some saying it’s only a matter of time before Palestinians march on the Erez crossing that straddles the border with Israel “just out of distress.”“Gaza is heading towards famine,” a longtime friend of this reporter said. “It is only a question of time, and we will get there.”He added, “There are already cases of families who simply don’t have anything to eat, and the UNRWA budget cuts will only make things worse” — a reference to recent US cuts to the UN Palestinian aid agency.Recently, nearly every day has seen semi-spontaneous protests, mostly by civilians, who have no livelihood and are seeking to raise international awareness of their plight. This week, a news agency broadcast an interview with a Khan Younis resident who was offering to sell his son, held in his arms.“Every day his mother tells me to get him something to eat,” the man said, “and I have nothing to give him.” Behind him were dozens of residents protesting the economic situation in Gaza.Monday and Tuesday saw general trade strikes in the Strip, perhaps born of a hope, or fantasy, that such a step would serve as a wake-up call to the world, Israel, Egypt or the Palestinian Authority. But the world is far from being concerned with Gaza at the moment. The Strip is on the brink of economic collapse, but very few are taking an interest.Although Gazans tend to blame Israel for their situation, it is actually the Jewish state that seems to be trying to encourage improved economic conditions. The Palestinian Authority recently decided to renew the electricity supply to Gaza by resuming payments for power generated by Israel (now providing power to homes for six hours, followed by 12 hours of darkness). But the decision to renew the power supply was not due to a sudden stroke of generosity by the PA. According to sources, it was the result of an ultimatum by Israel: The Jewish state warned the PA that if it didn’t renew payments for the Gaza power bill, the Israeli government would cover the costs with PA tax money it collects. Ramallah understood the message and made a public show of renewing electricity payments. At any rate, the two additional hours of power will not do much to change the economic situation in the Strip. It was also Israel that recently went against standard policy by approving the entry of materials into Gaza that are considered dual-purpose — that is, they could be used by Hamas to build tunnels or manufacture weaponry.Last week, wood supplies — in the past a source of tunnel beams — were allowed in to the Strip. Before that, approval was given to supplies of cement, iron, gas, fuels, and other materials. The general hardship, however, means these dual-purpose materials are not in very high demand. One Gaza trader said there was only a 20 percent demand for the cement that Israel allowed in.Perhaps the most pressing problem in Gaza these days is connected to government employees, both those of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. For more than two months, the 45,000 Hamas officials in Gaza have not received their wages. In Hamas’s view, the PA is supposed to pay, but the PA refuses due to the terror group’s refusal to hand over control of the territory. On top of this are the thousands of PA officials who were forced out on pension. Possibly joining them now will be the 13,000 UNRWA officials, who can apparently expect to receive only half of their wages in the coming month as a result of US cuts. And so economic activity in Gaza has been reduced dramatically. Unemployment figures have reached some 46.6%. Over a million people — half the population –need UNRWA food packages to survive the month. One figure that should ring alarm bells in Israel relates to the demand for goods from the Jewish state. According to Palestinian figures, over a year ago the number of trucks carrying goods into the Gaza Strip every day was around 800-1,000, whereas now that has dropped to an average of just 370. This is not because of Israeli measures, but rather because the Gazans have no money to spend.“There were over 100,000 police clarifications because of checks that bounced,” my friend said. “Every day workers are fired in the biggest trade companies, or they close.”Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? At the moment, it appears not. A reconciliation between bitter rivals Fatah and Hamas has faded (again). Hamas and the Fatah-dominated PA are still at loggerheads, separate and hostile.Egyptian Intelligence Minister Khaled Fawzy, considered the godfather of the reconciliation process, was fired last week. The man chosen to replace him is Abbas Kamil, one of the great enemies of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.Or, in other words, not exactly the kind of person who sees Hamas as a strategic partner.-The heir to Mahmoud Abbas-The recent crisis between the PA and the US, between US President Donald Trump and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, again highlights the question of what will be “the day after” the Palestinian leader departs the political stage. There are more than a few sources in the Palestinian territories who claim “the day after” is already here. Senior figures in Fatah and the PLO have already opened campaigns for the succession, even though Abbas is still ruling. Meanwhile, two of the names that have been raised in recent years seem a little less relevant due to deteriorating health. One is the secretary-general of the PLO executive committee, Saeb Erekat, who recently underwent a lung transplant in the US.The other is the head of the Palestinian general intelligence service, Majed Faraj. According to Ramallah sources, Faraj has not been in the best of health and has needed intensive treatment. It is not clear if it was for those reasons or others that Faraj did not travel with Abbas to Brussels to meet with representatives of the European Union this week. He also skipped a summit in Cairo.  He was at the opening of a recent PLO central committee conference in Ramallah but didn’t attend the second day of meetings. So who then is in the running? Deputy Chairman of Fatah Mahmoud al-Aloul has ostensibly emerged as one of the dominant forces. (The Fatah leadership is the body that will apparently decide the heir.) He is responsible for Fatah’s Tanzim militias, appears often at Fatah events, and has cast himself as more extreme than Abbas — perhaps boosting his support among party members in the process. He is located in Nablus and there are those who claim al-Aloul is preparing his followers for a possible physical battle over the succession. And then there is Jibril Rajoub, who continues to intensively deal with Palestinian sport and soccer, and Tawfik Tirawi who is still depicted as the “bad boy” of the Fatah leadership. Not to be forgotten is the man in an Israeli prison, Marwan Barghouti, convicted for his part in the murder of five Israelis in terror attacks. He was and remains the most popular figure in the territories. These days, however, Barghouti doesn’t have a real grip on the Fatah leadership, since those closest to him are being kept at a distance.
